Some great recent pictures - thank you both! And thanks Eggy for the interview. Nicole looks lovely as always. Not a bad draw in Toronto either, although Anna C has been playing well this summer and will be tough. Nicole definitely has a good shot at winning that match and I think she should be able to handle Dechy or Zuluaga too. I would love to see her against Mary too! Good luck Nicole!!!

Toronto — If the Rogers Cup tennis tournament were a television series, there would be a choice of possible titles.

http://www.wtatour.com/global/photos_rx/vaidisova_5109_rx.jpg

M*A*S*H would probably rate as the current favourite because every match they play now needs a doctor courtside, as the players drop out, one after another, because of injury.

Survivor would be right up there too because, based on the way the high-profile names are exiting centre stage, the final will undoubtedly be played between a pair of six-foot teenagers with long blonde hair and virtually unpronounceable surnames.

Already beset by key injuries and withdrawls, the Rogers Cup lost its top seed, reigning U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, Thursday when she lost in straight sets 7-6, 7-6 to unseeded Argentinian Gisela Dulko. Kuznetsova struggled to win a three-setter in the opening round, but in the loss to Dulko, it wasn't her game that betrayed her, it was her body.

It was more of the same over the Grandstand Court moments later in a match between Russia's Nadia Petrova and China's Na Li.

Petrova was well on her way to victory when Li, her right ankle already taped, turned on her ankle as she stretched for a return. Li crumpled into a heap and no one seemed to know exactly what to do. She lay there for more than five minutes, unattended, before assistance finally arrived. Petrova won the match 6-2, 3-0 (retired).

Li didn't have much of a choice but to default - she couldn't even leave the court on her own two feet.

In hindsight, Kuznetsova thought she probably should have packed it in as well, but just couldn't bring herself to do it.

“I think I should have stopped playing,” said Kuznestova, “but when the match is so close, it's so difficult (to quit). You just go and that's it.”

The injury occurred as Kuznetsova was serving at 30-love in the first set and suddenly found she couldn't turn her body.

“I just didn't know what to do,” she said. “Sometimes, when something pulls, you wait for a couple of minutes and it goes away.”

This time, it didn't.

So Kuznetsova played two more points and decided to call for the trainer. Later, she also asked for massage and between sets, after losing the tie breaker, she changed into a long-sleeve top.

Nothing helped.

“I feel really upset about the injury,” she said, knowing perhaps that the U.S. Open is in two weeks and her chances of defending her title might have just gone down the drain.

“I feel very down because I'm not used to get injured. I had problems with my shoulder. Now, it's my back. It's really hard for me. I mean, I was there and I couldn't really believe that I'm injured - that I have pain; that I cannot go.”

If Kuznetsova was in pain, consider how tournament organizers must feel. After top-seeded Maria Sharapova and Canadian-born Mary Pierce withdrew before the tournament and Serena Williams dropped out after the first round with a knee/ankle injury, Kuznetsova became one of the tournament's marquee attractions.

Now, she is gone and later in the day, the 6-foot Serbian teenager (and 12th seed) Ana Ivanovic withdrew as well, citing a strained right pectoral muscle, giving seventh-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters a walkover.

Russia's Anastasia Myskina, the ninth-seed and 2004 French Open champion, was having all kinds of trouble finding her form in this tournament, even before she turned her left ankle, trying to run down a ball from Japan's Shinobu Asagoe in the second set of their match. Asagoe served up an ace on the next point to win the game and Myskina went back to her chair in tears.

After a trainer taped her ankle, Myskina continued and found a way to squeeze out a 7-6, 7-5 victory.

So in the top half of the draw, it's now down to Myskina and Dulko in one quarter-final, assuming Myskina's ankle doesn't balloon up overnight, forcing her to retire; and Flavia Pennetta against Clijsters in the other. That, incidentally, features a battle between two players, each of whom received a walkover in their previous round (Pennetta advancing when Williams retired).

The bottom part of the draw boasts one last remaining interesting newcomer, the Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova, a dead-ringer for Sharapova, who advanced with a straight sets win over countrywoman Hana Sromova.

Vaidisova burst on the scene about a year ago, coming through the qualifying round of the WTA stop in Vancouver and ended up winning the event by defeating Laura Granville in the final.

It made her the sixth youngest champion in tour history (aged 15 years, three months and t23 days) and the lowest-ranked player (no. 180) to win a title in 2004.

Vaidisova, who only turned 16 last April, finished last year as the No. 77 in the world and had jumped to No. 27 this year. In the match against Sromova, she displayed a solid all-around game and a big booming serve and had little trouble handling the windy conditions on the outside court.

So now she's moving into the main stadium, with a probable quarter-final meeting with Justine Henin-Hardenne - and a clearer indication of what the near future may hold for her.

But with all the names falling by the wayside, this could be the right time for someone such as Vaidisova to break through - not just here, but in less than two weeks time. Considering all the injuries bedevilling the women's tour, this is one year when the Open could truly live up to its name and be wide open.

Her temeper is one of her strenghts. It is not really her temper, but herself-building on a match. People do really undervalue the fact that she does it. But it is actually good.

i don't know if she won her first grand slam and made it to world number 1 while still in her teens i would be quite happy. :)

i don't think that she is an exact copy there games have some similarities, they are both going to be very marketable to the WTA tour and they both broke through very young. so people will make the comparisons, but nikki is very much her own player and as she develops i think we'll will see that.

Constistancy and maturity will come with age and experience, she is only 16, and already has so much in her game.

I think Nicole is ready for the US Open and if she plays well she should at least live up to her seeding (#27) and make it to the 3rd round. Then it depends who she plays in the 3rd round to see how much farther she can go. Good luck Nicole! :D

I think she'll reach the 3rd round for sure - we can then start playing guess once the draw comes out.
she'll have to be very unlucky to draw one of the other tour threats still not seeded.
but generally speaking, i think this is her time to start the shining process big-time.
think about it that she could still be in the girl's draw  she's "grown" so fast into the tour, eh?

You just have to join the group (there is no cost to join a yahoo group).

There are 28 photos of her in the Photo Section in a folder titled "13 July 2005."

These pictures are also in the File Section.

Nicole played fairly well today. She was very impressive in the first set and looked to be cruising. She got herselfinto trouble in the second set a couple of times, but the match was always on her racket.

yep, and from here on when she won't meet a top4 seed ever again in the first round she'll always reach 3rd or higher.
I give her a sharapova deal if wants - lose now in the fourth - win it next year.
i really want petrova to win you see, my faves go
Smashnova
Petrova
Bartoli
Vaidisova
i know she'll do good in all slams next year, so can she pleeeeaaaase wait till AO?

Andy.
Sep 4th, 2005, 01:29 PM
Petrova is not mentally strong and Nicole has definatly nothing to lose against the world number 9 and should go out swinging. She definatly can match and then surpass Petrova off the ground and can match her in the serving department. Nicole has every chance to win.

jmcfarla
Sep 4th, 2005, 06:01 PM
Nicole was a little unlucky today, she had her chances to win but i think the occasion got to her, it certainly seemed to mental strength rather than ability that let her down.

She had a great position in the first set and even in the second. Neither player really played well but petrova held it together better.

Still 4th round isn't a bad result for her second us open, she is continuing to improve. ;)

Derek.
Sep 4th, 2005, 06:13 PM
:( The score was 6-7(4) 5-7, btw. She blew 5-2 lead in the 1st set and like 4-1 in the TB. Also threw her racquet and a gatorade after losing the 1st set. Then she smacked a ball in the crowd after losing the match and was booed off the court.

Yeah, if I remember correctly ( Sharky surely knows better than me :p ) Masha was something like 85th so nobody excepted her to reach the 4th round wheareas Nikki is in the top 30 so a lot of persons thought she could reach the 4th round :D Btw, I agree 100% with all of you, Nikki is still very young and she has a lot to learn, this match will bring her a lot of experience IMO.I hope that she will know how to overcome the pressure and that she won't choke like this anymore  At least she proved to everybody that she can be a threat for the top 10 players :) and she can definitly be proud of herself like the MightyMashaFan said :p
Nikki reminds me a lot of a young Sharapova (that's why I wanted so muuuch to see them playing against each other) so I think that she can take a grand slam next year :) just like Masha took Wimbly :D :bounce: :bounce:

=======
US OPEN (Flushing Meadows, New York, USA, Decoturf, Grand Slam)
=======

This is Nicole Vaidišová, a member of my casual demi-fanship, and a candidate for future induction into my eternal fanship:

Nicole can hit some terrific shots (when she doesn't have to move), and has a nice grunt too! ;) Nicole is still a rough diamond, but her potential is seemingly enormous - potential world number one, even.

Nicole may not have a very pretty face, but she is very sexy, and charming in interviews.

-----------
First round
-----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [26] d. Kveta Peschke, 6-3 6-1

------------
Second round
------------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [26] d. Zheng,Jie, 6-3 6-0

Nicole was the first player into the second round, and the first player into the third round!

-----------
Third round
-----------

+ NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [26] d. Ivana Lisjak [Q], 6-1 7-6 (7/2)

Why didn't Nicole get as much hype for reaching the fourth round here as Maria Sharapova (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) did for reaching 4r Wimbledon 2003?
(a) Maria had higher-profile matches to get to the fourth round: Ashley Harkleroad, ELENA BOVINA [21] and JELENA DOKIC (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/dokic/) [11].
(b) Maria is perceived to be even more attractive than Nicole.
(c) Nicole isn't as good a player as Maria was at 16: she's not as strong mentally, and doesn't move as well.
(d) Wimbledon is the greatest tournament in the world.
(e) Nicole has had a fair amount of hype anyway; I'm sure she'll get even more when she wins higher-profile matches and more WTA titles.

------------
Fourth round
------------

- NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [26] lt. NADIA PETROVA [9], 7-6 (7/4) 7-5

First Set
---------
When I opened the scoreboard, Nicole was already *3-1 up, and that break held until she was 5-2* up.

"..." represents frozen-scoreboard misery:

Petrova serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: 15/0, 15/15, 30/30... held.
Nicole serving for the first set at 5-3: 0/15... 15/40 (2 BPs)

Oh dear! Same story as the first set against Svetlana Kuznetsova at Wimbledon - Nicole unable to serve it out.

Petrova serving to stay in the first set at 4-5: 30/0... held.
Nicole serving 5-5: 30/0... 40/40... held.
Petrova serving to stay in the first set at 5-6: 40/0, held.
6-6 tiebreak: Nicole 2/0*... *3/1... 4/2*, *4/3... 4/5*... Petrova won the first set 7-6 (7/4).

Oh no! It's like Anna Chokevetadze's third-set loss to Elena Dementieva all over again!

Second Set
----------
VAIDIŠO _*@__* * *__ 5
PETROVA *__@* * * *@ 7

Nicole serving 2-3: 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad V, held.

Nicole serving 3-4: 0/30 -> 40/30, held.

A very important hold for Nicole, otherwise Petrova would have served for the match at 5-3!

Petrova serving 4-4: 30/0, 30/15... 40/30, held.
Nicole serving to stay in the match at 4-5: 15/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Petrova serving 5-5: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, 40/30, 40/40, ad P, held.
Nicole serving to stay in the match at 5-6: ... 30/40 (MP), Petrova won 7-6 (7/4) 7-5.

Grr... Nicole was a break up in both sets!

According to CEEFAX, Nicole threw her racket across the court in frustration, and then threw a drink across the court!

Tough draw for Nikki.

She beat Peer at Charleston, saving match points in the second set tie-breaker. :hearts:

Peer will pose a problem for her i think. She is Aranxta Sanchez like and is a terrific retrever of the ball and will frustrate Nicole to no end. If she can get past Peer she has a very good chance to go on and win the whole thing.

Shinobu Asagoe withdrew, so Peer becomes the #9 seed and takes Asagoe's place in the draw.

So now Nikki faces Finnish lucky loser Emma Laine in the opening round.

I like Nicole's draw in this tournament a lot! Morigami can be very hot or cold, so that could be difficult, but I think Nicole will beat Bartoli fairly convincingly. Dulko is the next predicted opponent and that could also be tricky, but Nicole should blast by her as well. I am seeing a challenging, but accessible road to the finals!!! I really hope Nicole can win this whole thing!!!!

I think Castano put in a somewhat different tactics from the usual baselining nikki got used to from the wtatour power babes.
but she was good enough to win through the tactic problems and against JJ it will be back to power bombs that she can handle.
I really liked JJ of 04 when she was "down-the-line"ing like mad, hitting more backhand winners than any other player in the circuit (yes, more than Mauresmo and Justine, Dementieva or whomever) with a miracoulous shot that got her out of trouble on the run.
this year she's put on some muscle and got tricked into booming away.
it's too bad, and it will cost her the title tomorrow, as nikki serves better, has a better forehand and can handle tough backhands, as long as they aren't on the run and down the line, exactly what could have won JJ the title last year.

uhm,im not so sure about that..i think,it will be a very equal match between these two, because their way of playing is very similar.but of course,it would be great for nici to get her 1 title!!we will see...

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Hard-serving Nicole Vaidisova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/966/) rallied past top-seeded Jelena Jankovic (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/404/) of Serbia-Montenegro 7-5, 6-3 Sunday to win the Korea Open, beating a weakened opponent who almost quit.

Vaidisova, a 16-year-old Czech seeded second, entertained the crowd by grunting, yelling and punching the air in winning her second WTA title. She reached the fourth round of last month's U.S. Open and made the third round of Wimbledon.

``It was definitely a little shaky,'' she said. ``There were a lot of shots I could have done. ... But on the key points I played better.''

Jankovic was up 4-3 in the first set before her opponent broke serve. Jankovic lost the set by botching her serve.

``It was a big mistake. I just couldn't concentrate,'' said Jankovic, who took a break in the second set and said she almost stopped playing because of a bad cold.

Vaidisova let loose a flurry of aces to dominate in the second set as Jankovic's serve went from bad to worse. ``At one point in the match I thought I was going to throw up, I think maybe it was 6-5 (in the first set),'' Jankovic said. ``If it wasn't a final maybe I would have retired.''

Nicole is winning by very impressive scorelines recently, and her last three losses have been to top-ten players, whereas Jankovic has been struggling with a back-injury and losing to players outside the top 40.

I had hoped for a mouthwatering Nicole v Tatiana Golovin final, but Tatiana had lost a tight three-setter to Jankovic in the other semi-final.

Nicole overpowered Jankovic from the baseline, and dominated the second set with "a flurry of aces" [Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/)] while Jankovic served erratically.

Nicole: "It was definitely a little shaky. There were a lot of shots I could have done. But on the key points I played better."

Jankovic, who was suffering from a cold, lost the first set with a second serve that landed on her own side of the net!

Jankovic: "It was a big mistake. I just couldn't concentrate. At one point in the match I thought I was going to throw up, I think maybe it was 6-5 [in the first set]. If it wasn't a final, maybe I would have retired."

No, both Seoul and Tokyo are outdoor hardcourts. But Tokyo's surface is much
faster than Seoul's.

Thanks Dr. Broad... :)

I don't get why do you care so much about their accent.. but ohh well..

Their accent? Do you mean their characteristic pronunciation, or do you mean the way I like to spell their names correctly?

if you go after the seoul result, its going to be easy pickings for her vs akiko, but on the other side, akiko has now got some match-practice again, after that awful UO experience, and she has her local crowd behind her!so,nici-baby,watch out carefully..
but of course,i hope, you get off to a good start!!
ok,very easily in the end!normally, she should be able to "walk"through the next rounds with ease, but,as i always say, always be careful!any opponent can have his "big" day sometime,so she is well advised to keep straightly focused,no matter, who she is playing!!

good luck,nici-baby!!
