Vaidisova Dazzles In Debut
Nicole Vaidisova By Tennis Week

Nicole Vaidisova is looking forward to her first main-draw appearance at the 2005 Australian Open, while looking back on a historic break-through season on the WTA Tour.

In a year in which teen queens ranging from Maria Sharapova to Svetlana Kuznetsova to Tatiana Golovin scored significant victories, the 15-year-old Vaidisova made a dazzling debut on the WTA Tour. The Czech-born Vaidisova became the first WTA Tour rookie (at least dating back to 1975, according to WTA records) to capture two tournament titles in her debut season. She beat Golovin in three sets in Tokyo and scored a World TeamTennis victory over Sharapova in what may well have served as a preview of a promising professional rivalry.

Due to the WTA Tour’s age-eligibility rule, Vaidisova played a limited tournament schedule this year, but still managed to make remarkable progress. Unranked a year ago, Vaidisova started the season by advancing to the Australian Open junior final and has shot up the WTA Tour rankings to her current spot of No. 77 in the rankings.

She’s barely old enough for a learner’s permit, but Vaidisova continuously drives opponents nuts. Vaidisova claimed her second career WTA Tour title last month with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Virginie Razzano in the Tashkent Open final. Vaidisova upset second-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy in the semifinal en route to the title.

Playing a power-based baseline game that effectively employs the serve-forehand combination once displayed by another hard-hitting Czech — former No. 1 Ivan Lendl — Vaidisova collected her first title of the year with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Laura Granville in the Vancouver final.

Opponents are well aware of Vaidisova’s prodigious potential and sponsors are already tapping into the marketing appeal of the six-foot-Vaidisova who possesses the good looks of a model and the poise to match. Vaidisova, whose IMG agent Olivier Van Lindonk also represents Taylor Dent and Wimbledon semifinalist Mario Ancic, has already signed endorsement deals with Reebok and Yonex and will undoubtedly attract even more offers from sponsors as her career continues.

Failing to survive the competitive qualifying rounds of Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Vaidisova arrived in Flushing Meadows ranked No. 126 with just seven career victories to her credit and proceeded to storm through the qualifying draw, winning three matches without dropping a set. She took a competitive quantum leap forward when she drew defending U.S. Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in the opening round of the Open and came up small on the world’s largest court as she won just nine points in surrendering the first set in 17 minutes. Regaining her composure, Vaidisova showcased her court sense and sheer power in striking eight winners (compared to four for Henin-Hardenne) in the second set as she broke twice to surge to a 4-1 lead before finally succumbing to the Olympic gold medallist, 6-1, 6-4.

The match showed Vaidisova has the weapons to hang with the world’s best players, but also revealed her slightly erratic backhand and the youthful tendency toward impatience as she sometimes tried to strike winners from defensive positions against one of the game’s best movers rather than play the percentages, hit a deep recovery shot and restart the point.

Despite the defeat, Vaidisova made significant strides in the space of a single season. Last December, Vaidisova won the Orange Bowl at the age of 14 to become become the youngest Orange Bowl Girls' 18s champion since Anna Kournikova won the 1995 title at the age of 14 years, 6 months. Spectators who witnessed her 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory over another promising player, American wild card Neha Uberoi, were struck by Vaidisova’s competitive composure after she clanked a consecutive double faults to hand Uberoi the first set. The mental meltdown was merely a brain drain for Vaidisova, who regained her focus in the second set.

"I was still confused and still think about the lead which I lost with two unforced errors," said Vaidisova, who celebrated her 15th birthday in April. "I kept thinking about that and it cost me the first set. I stayed focus and avoided brain damage except for a few moments."

The Orange Bowl has often been a barometer for player potential. Past winners of the Orange Bowl 18-and-under title have gone on to successful pro careers including John McEnroe (1976), Ivan Lendl (1977), Gabriela Sabatini (1984), Mary Joe Fernandez (1986), Jim Courier (1987), Anna Kournikova (1995), Elena Dementieva (1998), Roger Federer (1998) and Andy Roddick (1999).

Vaidisova blossomed during the World TeamTennis summer season. The Prague native swept both the WTT Pro League Female MVP and Female Rookie of the Year for her outstanding play with the Sacramento Capitals. Vaidisova, in her first year with WTT, finished the season with a 66-36 record and a No. 1 ranking in women’s singles (.647 pct.) and a win-loss record of 59-41 in women’s doubles teaming up with Anastassia Rodionova to have a final ranking of No. 3 (.590 pct.).

While she is sure to experience some growing pains in the coming years, barring injury Vaidisova is completely capable of eventually residing in the top 20 for years to come. Currently training with her father and coach Ales Kodat at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton, Florida, Vaidisova has committed to playing the Hong Kong exhibition, Hobart and the Australian Open at the start of the 2005 season.

For the girl who made history on court this year, the best is yet to come.

"Hurricane Tennis Slam" To Raise Money for Florida Hurricane Relief Fund

The Addition of Future Champion, Angela Haynes, Who Replaces Injured Jennifer Capriati, Creates a Showcase of the Rising Stars of Women’s Professional Tennis; All Part of a Charity Event To Raise Money for Florida Hurricane Relief Fund

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – Rising young American star Angela Haynes will take on Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova at the WTA Tour’s Hurricane Tennis Slam on December 18, 2004 at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Haynes, who replaces the injured Jennifer Capriati, joins fellow future champions Nicole Vaidisova and Maria Kirilenko in an event that will showcase many of the future personalities, star power and rivalries in women’s professional tennis. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

World No.4 Maria Sharapova will meet American Angela Haynes in the featured singles match. The doubles match will follow, with Maria Sharapova teaming with Maria Kirilenko against Rennae Stubbs and Nicole Vaidisova. Former ATP world No.1 Jim Courier will offer commentary and entertainment during the star studded doubles match.

Capriati will be unable to compete in the singles match due to a continuing right shoulder injury. She is extremely disappointed to not play in the event she passionately supports. Capriati will be at the St. Pete Times Forum on Saturday and will be involved in the various activities throughout the day, all helping to raise funds for the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

Haynes, 20, hails from California and is an exciting young player to watch. She enjoyed a great run at the US Open, reaching the third round as a wildcard and defeating former Top 10 player Magdalena Maleeva in the second round. Haynes is being acclaimed as one of the future American stars in women’s tennis.

“I am so excited to play in the Hurricane Tennis Slam and be involved in such a fun and exciting event,” Haynes said. “I am proud to be a part of this event and assist with the rebuilding efforts in Florida.”

Seven-time WTA Tour champion Maria Sharapova leads the field, currently holding a career high of No.4 in the world. In 2004 and at age 17, Sharapova won Wimbledon in her first Grand Slam final. With this victory, she became the second youngest Wimbledon ladies champion in the Open era, after Martina Hingis, who was 16. Sharapova finished 2004 winning the WTA Tour’s prestigious season-ending Championships, defeating Serena Williams in a thrilling three-set final.

Following the singles match, the Russian duo of Maria Sharapova and Maria Kirilenko will take on 15-year-old Nicole Vaidisova and Tampa resident, Rennae Stubbs.

Vaidisova is only the second player in Tour history to win two WTA Tour singles titles as a 15-year-old (the other being Jennifer Capriati). Stubbs is a former world No.1 in doubles and holds 50 doubles titles, including four Grand Slam doubles titles.

The Hurricane Tennis Slam will begin at 3:00pm at the St. Pete Times Forum, kicking off with a celebrity showdown. Renowned tennis coach Nick Bollettieri will demonstrate some of the expertise he has exhibited in coaching players such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Jim Courier. In addition, recent ABC “Bachelor” Byron Velvick and NBC sportscasters JP Peterson and Dave Reynolds will also be participating in the on court activities.

Prior to the exhibition, a free Kids Tennis Clinic at the St. Petersburg Tennis Center will take place on December 18 at 10:00 a.m. The clinic will feature Nick Bollettieri and several of his up-and-coming tennis student stars.

The WTA Tour’s “Hurricane Tennis Slam” will begin at 3 p.m. Ticket prices range from $16.75 to $76.75 (plus service charge). All proceeds will benefit the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund.

Tickets are available at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, online at Ticketmaster.com or charge-by-phone at the following numbers:

Orlando 407-839-3900
Lakeland 863-682-5300
Ft. Myers 239-334-3309

The St. Pete Times Forum will also be the site of the Mercedes Benz Classic on March 21, 2005, featuring Jim Courier, Andre Agassi, Mardy Fish and others. Proceeds will benefit the Raymond James Courier’s Kids Club with tickets going on sale at the Hurricane Tennis Slam.

Good luck to Nicole in her big match against Davenport. :) I have only seen Nicole play a 2004 WTT match against Maria Sharapova and a first round 2004 U.S. Open match against Justine Henin. I hope to see some improvement in Nicole's game tonight. But Nicole is only 15 nad has never played against as big and strong a woman as Davenport. I hope she can handle Davenport's power. If she isn't overwhelmed by Davenport then she might be able to move Lindsay around and frustrate her by playing good defense mixed in with her power game.

Jan 22nd, 2005, 04:28 AM
A good match from Nicole even though she lost. Its just another step on the way up the lader to greatness.

Jan 22nd, 2005, 08:23 AM
Nicole  :(
played pretty good in patches but inexperience cost her :(

I think it's a good sign that Nicolen who is only 15 gave Lindsay Davenport who is arguably the hardest hiiter in women's tennis history a competitive match. Davenport has a history of crushing the youngsters when she plays them for the first time. But it seems like Nicole played Lindsay tough for the most part and that's a good sign.

Jan 22nd, 2005, 03:40 PM
Its great to see Nicole put up a good fight against Lindsay, by the next AO Nicole is really going to be putting pressure on the top players.

tough draw imo, well potentially tough. sprem playing well will be trouble as will pierce, petrova will be tough as well but can also be inconsistent as can daniilidou. so 'potentially' tough, but she could have a nice run with this draw. would be interesting to see her against a top 15er like petrova.

Mar 8th, 2005, 02:33 AM

Mar 21st, 2005, 10:04 PM
nicole is in a tough section of the draw, plays srebotnik 1st round then jankovic then petrova or possibley ivanovic (would be a very interesting match).

Mar 21st, 2005, 10:06 PM
Good luck Nicole :D (Except if you play Ivanovic ;) )

Mar 22nd, 2005, 12:08 AM
Nicole was dealt a very tough draw here, but it will give us all a good guage for where her game is at. Srebotnik is so streaky and that match could be very tough or very easy. We all know that Jelena J can also be very up and down, but when she's playing well, she's getting everything back with depth. She could definitely be a very difficult player for Nicole to handle. Then possibly Ivanovic or Petrova. I would love to see Nicole get through and play Ana!!! That would be just too perfect!!! I wouldn't know who to pull for, but I'd be happy (and sad) either way. Good luck Nicole!!! One round at a time babe!!!

Mar 22nd, 2005, 05:01 AM
C'mon! Nicloe... yo ucan go far on this one... ;) Beat momotorized Amezon!

I saw Nicole when I was in Miami Tues-Fri. She's so tall and very nice too. :) I got her autograph. :D I saw her the most of any player. She stayed down the street from my hotel. Then I'd walk down the street to the hotel where she'd stay at so I could catch a shuttle to the tournament. ;) I'd see her every morning getting into a car going to the tournament. :) Her and Viktoriya Kutuzova were practicing a lot together, even after Kutuzova had lost. They were very entertaining to watch. :) :woohoo:

Tears & tantrums from teenage brigade

By Jonathan Overend
BBC Five Live tennis correspondent in Miami

It was a case of tears and tantrums on court number six at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Sunday.

Teenage prospect Nicole Vaidisova had her every move scrutinised by a gaggle of coaches and agents as she took another step towards inevitable superstardom.

This tall 15-year old from Prague fits the part perfectly.

It won't be difficult for the salivating IMG reps, who lined the back row of the small stand, to sell their product to the sponsors or the glossies.

She's already a tournament champion - she was just 15 years, 3 months, and 23 days when she won the Vancouver title last year - and a follow-up success in Tashkent confirmed her potential.

Although she's a fine player in her own right, a closer clone of Maria Sharapova you couldn't wish to find.

From the blonde pony tail and silver earrings to the pained shrugging of the shoulders and constant mumbling, the similarities are quite scary.

Her match with Ana Ivanovic, another of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's hugely promising teenage brigade, was high-quality stuff.

Ivanovic, the 17 year old from Serbia, played the more consistent tennis - her forehand is exceedingly flat and piercing - and she deserved her straight-sets win.

But enough of the quality - feel the emotion.

Watching Vaidisova is a draining experience, with enough highs and lows to last an entire night in Miami's exuberant South Beach region.

She was ranting, shrieking (but not grunting) and then, after being broken for 6-5 in the second, came the sudden tears.

Her body was shaking and her face was buried in the towel.

Vaidisova was posing on Miami beach hours after her defeat
When she rose from her chair, her face was cherry red, and the ballboy at the net - the only person face-to-face with her during the changeover - looked visibly shocked.

Tears in tennis have flown for years but to see them during a third-round match, in such an innocuous setting as Miami's Court Six, was quite perturbing.

The motto 'winning is all that matters' is drummed into most champions but, on this occasion, Vaidisova appeared petrified of losing.

After the match, she refused to shake the umpire's hand, annoyed at an incorrect line-call in the second set tie-break, and stomped off the court.

Three hours later she was off to the beach for a photo-shoot in advance of her 16th birthday in three weeks' time.

A fine player with an enormous future but, over a few hours, this was a vivid example of how modern day sport has become business, not pleasure.

I saw Nicole at Miami on Wednesday. I had seen her play at the US Open against Justine live and it looks like she has really improved. She changed her backhand take back to a strait back movement instead of having it cocked. It seems she is more fluid this way. She was practicing with Maria Kirilenko and just hitting the ball so hard. Nicole is one of my favorite favorite players and she had a good tournament, so just keep it up Nicole!

Myskina has not been in the best form lately so Nicole if she plays her is in with every chance to cause an upset.

Apr 9th, 2005, 09:55 PM
Yeah Nicole can upset Myskina :)

Apr 10th, 2005, 02:14 PM
Nastya's serving is extremely dodgey at the moment (even more than usually) and she seems to be relying on her ability to break. If Nicole can make it to the second round, then the key is her serve, if she can hold it together then she will almost certainly get chances to break Nastya.

To be honest this is a really good draw for Nicole :)
A really tough one for Nastya.

I hope they do get to play as it should be a good match. :bounce:

Myskina is slumping so this is a great opportunity for Nicole.

Nicole might not get a better chance to knock off a top 6 player this year. Which would be another huge step forward in her career.

With the way Nastya has played in the past 4 months she probably wouldn't even need to do anything spectacular.

But Nastya is a top player and Nicole has to go into the match expecting the real Myskina to turn up.

Hopefully it is a good match. :)
