Tennis Star Nicole Vaidisova Serves Up Clean Drinking Water for Kids

MIAMI, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As a top 10 tennis star on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, 17 year-old Nicole Vaidisova understands the importance of drinking water to maintain her health and energy. She also knows that many children around the world do not have access to water. That's why she has joined on as an ambassador for PlayPumps International, a nonprofit that is bringing water to millions of African children and families, as World Water Day approaches on March 22.

"When I heard that more than a billion people around the world lack access to clean drinking water, and every 15 seconds a kid dies from diseases related to unsafe water, I wanted to get involved," Vaidisova said. "The idea behind the PlayPump is simple: Kids play, and water pumps. These special pumps provide clean water for people who need it, and also give kids a chance to play."

A PlayPump(TM) water system is a child's merry-go-round attached to a water pump and storage tank that provides clean drinking water and powerful educational messages to schools and communities in Africa. By 2010, 4,000 PlayPump systems will be installed in 10 Sub-Saharan African countries.

Vaidisova learned about the PlayPump system from music artist Jay-Z, whose MTV documentary, "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life," showcased the PlayPump system as a creative solution to the world water crisis. As a PlayPump International ambassador, Nicole will serve as a spokesperson during outreach campaigns; write a regular web-site column; participate in events; and meet with students from around the world to discuss the water crisis. In addition, Nicole has donated money to install a PlayPump system at a school in a rural African village.

"We are proud to have Nicole playing on our court," says Jill Rademacher, President of PlayPumps International. "We know that with her energy and passion, we can inspire thousands of others to be a part of this campaign."

"It is exciting to think that I can help kids be healthy and have fun," said Nicole. "I encourage everyone to visit PlayPumps.org to learn how they can help kids get clean water. Imagine $6 can help provide one person with water for a decade; and $14,000 can give a new PlayPump system to an entire village of 2,500 people."

The World Water Crisis: Fast Facts -- March 22 is World Water Day. -- More than one billion people worldwide do not have access to clean water. -- Water-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, taking the lives of 6,000 people a day. -- Every 15 seconds a child dies from a preventable, water-related disease. -- 40 billion hours are lost annually to hauling water, a chore primarily undertaken by women and girls. About PlayPumps International

PlayPumps International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to help improve the lives of children and their families by providing easy access to clean drinking water, enhancing public health, and offering play equipment to millions across Africa. To date, PlayPumps International has donated more than 800 PlayPump(TM) water systems in South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zambia. In 2007 and beyond, PlayPumps International will help bring the systems to Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Tanzania, and Uganda. The organization's goal is to provide the benefits of clean drinking water to up to 10 million people by 2010. For more information, visit http://www.playpumps.org.

"100 Pumps in 100 Days" Campaign to Launch on World Water Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 21, 2007

CONTACT:
Nancy Murphy, (202) 292-1775

Tennis star Nicole Vaidisova helps launch campaign to bring clean water to African communities through PlayPump water systems

Approaching World Water Day as a call to action, PlayPumps International, together with Save the Children USA, is launching a campaign to bring clean water to 100 schools and communities in Africa. Supported by tennis star Nicole Vaidisova, the "100 Pumps in 100 Days" campaign aims to raise $1.4 million to fund PlayPump water systems—an innovative pump powered by a merry-go-round.

"I am proud to be a part of the ‘100 Pumps in 100 Days’ campaign to bring clean drinking water to children and families in rural Africa," Vaidisova said. "Playing tennis has allowed me to travel the world, and I’ve become aware of how closely connected we all are. It is important for us to work together to make sure that no one lacks something as basic as clean water to drink. The ‘100 Days’ campaign offers everyone simple ways to make a big difference."

The campaign, which will begin March 22 and end June 29, will engage students, clubs, faith-based organizations, and others in raising money and awareness. The campaign’s Action Kit, available at www.playpumps.org, contains 100 ideas for fundraising and outreach.

PlayPumps International, which raises money to donate PlayPump™ water systems to schools and communities in sub-Saharan Africa, is known for its collaborative approach. PlayPumps International has enjoyed the support of foundations, corporations, governments and celebrities, including music artist Jay-Z, whose MTV documentary "Diary of Jay-Z: Water for Life" raised awareness of the water crisis.

A PlayPump water system is a child’s merry-go-round attached to a water pump and storage tank that provides clean drinking water and powerful educational messages to schools and communities in Africa. By 2010, 4,000 PlayPump systems will be installed in 10 sub-Saharan African countries.

"Save the Children is proud to be working with PlayPumps International to provide hygiene education, nutrition programming, and other vital services in communities where we both work," said Charles MacCormack, President and CEO, of Save the Children USA. "We are thrilled to be part of a campaign to make sure more children and families benefit from clean drinking water." Additional campaign supporters include the Case Foundation, National Geographic Kids, Flashbags, Hard Rock International, Allido Records, Anheuser-Busch, the Film Connection, the Center for International Education, the National Youth Leadership Council and APCO Worldwide.

Why Hit the Wall? It Hurts. Reebok Encourages Consumers to Join the Global ''Run Easy'' Movement and Simply Enjoy the Ride...

Wednesday April 4, 9:25 am ET

Groundbreaking Campaign Debuts in April Featuring Celebrities around the World Demonstrating the Ease of "Running at the Speed of Chat"

CANTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Running... what's gone wrong? Over the years, running has been associated with a "no pain, no gain" theory. According to a recent survey orchestrated by GfK Custom Research, a staggering 87% of Americans have been put off the sport of running for a variety of reasons including the fear that they need to be competitive in order to participate*. In opposition to this philosophy, Reebok asks consumers, "What are you just doing?" in its innovative global movement "Run Easy."

The multi-faceted movement kicks off this week. Featuring celebrities from around the world showing how they "Run Easy," including basketball legend Allen Iverson, soccer standout Thierry Henry, track and field stars Carolina Kluft and Aries Merritt, football icons Vince Young, Chad Johnson and DeAngelo Hall, tennis phenom Nicole Vaidisova, acclaimed actress Emmanuelle Chriqui, cricket stars Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni and street skateboarder Stevie Williams, the campaign drives home the message that running should be about enjoying the ride.

"It's about time to make a bold stance and bring the fun back into running and invite consumers of all levels of athletic ability to participate," said Uli Becker, Reebok chief marketing officer. "Through our 'Run Easy' movement, Reebok is defying the way competitor brands position running as a 'push-the-limits' ideal."

Running is a sport with the greatest opportunity for growth, as the largest global category in the footwear industry at roughly nine billion dollars. The concept of "Run Easy" was created to provide today's consumers with a much-needed alternative to hitting the proverbial wall while running. According to the GfK Custom Research study, 75% of Americans polled associate feeling some form of pain, discomfort or injury with running.

"Meeting up with friends to run easy and chat together the whole way makes running something I look forward to doing," said Nicole Vaidisova, the youngest tennis player currently ranked in the top ten. "When you run easy, running becomes a more relaxing and enjoyable activity," echoed Carolina Kluft, the number one ranked female heptathlete in the world.

"Why hit that wall if it hurts? Just run easy," said basketball legend Allen Iverson. "When I run easy it gives me a chance to take in the sights around me, which makes running a lot more fun," noted football icon DeAngelo Hall.

Reebok's "Run Easy" movement kicks off with an aggressive media campaign on April 2nd featuring advertising created by New York agency, mcgarry bowen. Television spots, directed by acclaimed award-winning director, Frank Budgen, will begin airing on TV on April 30th.

The first phase of the "Run Easy" movement will feature several attention grabbing Out of Home executions including edgy messages such as "Run + Puke + Run = Crazy" and "Why Hit the Wall? It Hurts" as well as digital advertising on high profile websites worldwide. The Out of Home executions will be located in high-traffic areas in key global cities. Simultaneously, eye level media will also be used to spread the Run Easy philosophy and encourage consumers to use text messaging or SMS to join the movement. Following the Out of Home executions will be the first "Run Easy" television spot starring Reebok's talented roster of global athletes.

Reebok's Run Easy television spot celebrates the joy of social running "at the speed of chat." Each celebrity depicted in the campaign participates in a non-linear conversation seamlessly intertwined to create one fun story. Demonstrating that consumers can "Run Easy" anywhere around the world, the campaign was shot on beaches, city streets and parks in some of the world's top cities including London and Los Angeles.

Bringing the "Run Easy" movement to the masses in a meaningful way that especially resonates with young consumers, Reebok created the website GoRunEasy.com. Co-developed by Watertown agency Molecular and Carat Fusion in Boston, GoRunEasy.com launches on April 2nd and is the most comprehensive website Reebok has ever created. Featuring a first-of-its-kind "mashup" between Reebok, Google maps and Flickr, GoRunEasy.com allows the consumer to map out and share their favorite running routes and also post scenery snapshots of the coolest sights to take in while on the run. In addition, GoRunEasy.com features a community where consumers can upload music playlists, join discussion groups with other runners and watch some of today's hottest celebrities demonstrating the art of "running at the speed of chat."

To further bring the "Run Easy" movement to life, Reebok will sponsor new running events that celebrate the joy and fun of running such as "Bay to Breakers 12K" in San Francisco, CA on May 20th, and the "Peachtree 10K Road Race" in Atlanta, GA on July 4th.

Reebok International Ltd., headquartered in Canton, Massachusetts, is a leading worldwide designer, marketer and distributor of sports, fitness and casual footwear, apparel and equipment. A subsidiary of the adidas Group, the company operates under the multiple divisions of the Reebok brand, Reebok-CCM Hockey and the Sports Licensed Division. On Tuesday night during the first week of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, I was eating in an Italian restaurant when I glanced at a table near me and thought, "That girl sure looks like Nicole Vaidisova." When she rose to go to the lady's room, all six feet of her, and walked past me I knew it was her. She was dining with her parents and her youngest brother, doting over the child much of the time. Out of consideration to her and her family, I left her alone and refrained from saying anything to her, but I can assure you it was a great thrill for me! She is quite stunning casually dressed and in person.

There is an element to the story I failed to mention. Nicole and her family were already seated and had presumably ordered when we entered the restaurant and were shown to our table. We ordered, and our food arrived shortly thereafter. As I was eating, I noticed Nicole occasionally looking over her shoulder at the area where the food was being prepared and placed for the wait staff to pick up. She was growing increasingly impatient, understandably so. We had finished our meal and were in the process of paying the waiter when Nicole's and her family's food finally arrived. Apparently, I was the only one in the restaurant who recognized Ms. Vaidisova, because she certainly wasn't receiving VIP treatment. I was quite anxious to at least wish her good luck in Miami, but I thought the most considerate thing I could do was to leave her alone and let her enjoy a quiet evening with her family prior to the tournament where she would undoubtedly be subjected to "adoring fans" wherever she went.

Charleston was a really good chance to give Nicole points to help her when Roland Garros comes around.

She really needs to step it up in Rome and Berlin.

Vaidisova
Apr 12th, 2007, 04:06 AM
yeah.

Nicole really can't afford to lose early in Berlin or Rome because it would be three Tier I tournaments where she gained nothing/much at all. This before 400+ pts come off from Strasbourg and Roland Garros. And then with grass following, can't say we have huge expectations really for her to do well then, so need to step up next month. Also for YEC since Nicole usually does not play as much as others - if she doesn't do well in these big tournaments then it will be tough...

It would be great if she can end up being a top 8 seed at RG, but I'm not sure how likely it is now... Have to see how she does at Berlin and Rome I guess.

Nicole needs to do well on clay and particulary at Rome and Berlin. She could have a good run at Rg but only if she comes here in top form.Las year, she was at the peak of her form and she won't do great if she doesn't go far at this two tournaments. But red clay is better for her game as on green clay she's really bad-I wonder how she was in Qf in 2005?.:o

Derek.
Apr 12th, 2007, 11:37 AM
Green clay is a faster than red clay so I didn't expect her to play her best, but I didn't expect a 2R exit either.

IMO Nicole will play well when she is the underdog. sometimes i think she feels a lot of pressure coming into the match as a favourtie to win, let alone being a top seed.

so Berlin & Rome might be a good tournament. like RG last year, who would have thought Nicole reaching the semis even she won Strasbourg the week before?

Australian Open - Serena won
Paris - Lucie lost in final
Indian Wells - Sveta lost in final

IMO Nicole will play well when she is the underdog. sometimes i think she feels a lot of pressure coming into the match as a favourtie to win, let alone being a top seed.

Well she wasn't the favorite in Miami and I she played bad. :o

Green clay is a faster than red clay so I didn't expect her to play her best,
but I didn't expect a 2R exit either.
Nicole d. Krajicek 4-6 7-5 6-2 at Miami, so I think it isn't that bad that Nicole lost to her 6-4 4-6 3-6 at Charleston.

Both matches were close.

The only reason Nicole struggled so much in Miami was because of her unforced errors and I suppose it was the same in Charleston as well.

if i see vaidisova when im eating maybe i can die hahahaha

I ate my lunch whilst casually watching Nicole lose to Eleni Daniilidou at Birmingham 2005 (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/vaidi/2005.html#Birmingham). Had I known that I would be inducting Nicole into my Eternal Fanship in 51 weeks' time, I would have refrained from eating and given the match my full attention!

That was the last time I have seen Nicole in the flesh (and what flesh!), and I long to do so again, now that she means so much more to me.

CANTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--To celebrate tennis' new "It Girl" Nicole Vaidisova's 18th birthday in style, Reebok hosts a star-studded event tonight, Thursday, April 26, 2007 at top NYC club Stereo. Reebok Throws Vaidisova 18th Birthday Bash

NEW YORK CITY, NY, USA - One of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's brightest young stars, Nicole Vaidisova, was the center of attention on Thursday night, but not on the tennis court. The Czech was honored by her sponsor, Reebok, with a special "A Day in the Life of Nicole Vaidisova" 18th birthday bash, held at New York City hotspot Stereo.

The event was a complete success. Editors from over 30 key media outlets including Seventeen, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Tennis, Men's Fitness, Glamour, Rolling Stone, Tennis Week, the Associated Press, US Weekly, Allure and In Touch attended the big event, as did celebrities such as golfer Paula Creamer and pop group Gym Class Heroes, who performed live before DJ Kiss spun tracks throughout the night.

Vaidisova also previewed her first ever signature tennis shoe, the Reebok KFS Pump Advantage (pictured), at the birthday extravaganza.

The youngest player in the Top 50, Vaidisova turned 18 years old Monday. With Maria Sharapova hitting 20 years old just a few weeks earlier, the Czech phenom is now the lone teenager in the world's Top 10. There are currently seven teenagers in the Top 50, but only three are more than a year from their 20th birthdays, namely No.8-ranked Vaidisova, No.40-ranked Michaella Krajicek and No.42-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska.

Vaidisova is enjoying an excellent beginning to 2007, winning 17 of 23 matches, an Australian Open semifinal showing then back-to-back quarterfinal runs at Tier I tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami highlighting that record. She made an opening round exit in her clay court season debut at Charleston - to Krajicek - but rebounded at Fed Cup last week with two wins for her country on the dirt. Her next scheduled events are the back-to-back clay court Tier Is in Berlin and Rome.

Courier and Stubbs defeated Sampras and Nicole Vaidisova 6-3 in the mixed doubles match. In the men's singles finale, Sampras beat Tampa's Mardy Fish 7-6, 6-4, ending on an ace (Fish was a late replacement for Courier, who didn't want to take any chances while still recuperating from a back injury).

The evening began with a celebrity doubles match as Chris Evert and actor Jon Lovitz beat actor Donal Logue and Vaidisova 6-4.

On Strasbourg's blog, the director told he phoned Nicole's father to know if she's interested to defend her title since she's not playing in Berlin this week. He'll tell us more later.

It would be a good idea I think. If Nicole does play Rome we don't know how far she would go since coming off from injury and not having played in several weeks. So if she lost early it would be good to have Strasbourg available to get more matches in before RG.

If Nicole doesn't do well at RG, these may be her last few weeks in the top 10 for awhile. :tape:

Vaidisova
May 11th, 2007, 01:14 AM
She needs to do well in Rome for the ranking points and match play with Roland Garros just a little over 2 weeks away.

An early loss in Rome would be bad since it would be the third Tier I tournament this year gone by without anything gained point wise (Charleston, Berlin withdrawal).

The rankings right now are pretty close between several players. Nicole has a lot coming off but so do others ranked above/below her.

At RG - even if Nicole doesn't repeat her SF performance of last year it won't be horrible since ranking points are higher this year, unless she crashes out in the first round or something. :tape: For example, if Nicole makes the QF at RG this year she would get 250 pts. She got 314 for her SF last year. So it wouldn't be a huge loss at all.

Nicole will be behind Martina by 47 points when Rome points come off I think. She can gain a lot with a good result next week but so can several others currently ranked below her. So she will have to stay ahead of them too (which she already is slightly).

Next week at Rome will be a fight for RG seeding also.

The director told about that many times (he's very insistent, of course he wants to promote his tournament).Mauresmo was injured and she lost early at Berlin this week.If she doesn't do great at Rome, there is a possibility she may come to be 100% ready for Rg.It still rumours, to be honest. The press doesn't suggest anything because they're still choked about her loss yesterday.

It says that Nicole (Czech, ranked 8th in the world) is back in Strasbourg to defend her title. She has been given a place in the main draw as a "Gold exempt player". Nicole says she's excited to be back in Strasbourg, and that playing there will make a perfect preparation for the French Open.

I remember her saying in another recent interview (or press conference) that she wanted to keek playing for 5 or 6 more years, or something like that. I didn't think too much of it, but now she brings that up again. Odd indeed to be thinking about retirement so far ahead, and at such a young age. Hmmm... wonder what she means by "so much to do". Going to college, maybe? She does seem to have a more intellectual side.

Vaidisova pulls out of Strasbourg

STRASBOURG, France (AP) -- Defending champion Nicole Vaidisova pulled out of next week's French Open tuneup tournament in Strasbourg because of a nagging right wrist injury.

"Unfortunately I am not able to defend my title in Strasbourg," the seventh-ranked Vaidisova said in a statement released by her agent. "My wrist is still bothering me and it is not enabling me to compete at 100 percent. I will continue my daily rehab with my medical team in an effort to get ready for the French Open."

Vaidisova already had withdrawn from the German Open and Italian Open because of the wrist problem.

She reached her first career Grand Slam semifinal at last year's French Open, then again reached the final four at this year's Australian Open.

We should hopefully know more about her condition and plans in the coming week (when/if she announces her withdrawal from RG).

If she doesn't come back until summer hardcourts then this wrist injury was way worse than anyone thought.

She should be fine for at least Wimbledon. Why would she skip a grand slam when she doesn't have to?

I agree, it's been reported that it's a tendonitis flare up. If she cannot play Roland Garros, she should be okay for Wimbledon if not a grass court warm up. Especially if this has been bothering her since Charleston/Fed Cup (if that's why she was struggling then).

I just hope she returns healthy and ready to go, whenever that is.

at least what i've hoped for b/c even she plays, i don't see her goes far (with injury and had only few matches under her belt.) hence clay takes too much pressure on the wrist and she probably reinjures. IMO she should rest up until Wimbledon then she can have a better preparation.

She should play Wimbledon but as she hasn't played no warmup on this surface since a long time ago (and it'll be the same case this year too), I can't see her doing good here.

So, we may wait until the hardcourt season to see Nicole having good results again.

Oh I understand. ;)

The reason Daniela can win a Tier I title and Nikki can't, I believe, is because Daniela has more self-belief.

When Nikki is in the QF/SF vs. Serena or Kuznetsova, does she believe she can win? She plays well for awhile, but when it's time to close out a set or a match she's gone. :o

That's a fair point.

It's like when everyone compares Maria and Nikki - the biggest different is their mental games.

But I guess everyone is different, and it's only a matter of time before Nikki puts it all together and starts winning these tight SF's that she's losing right now.

I am curious in what form Nicole is. I doubt she will defend semifinal, especially after such a long time break without any match play. A lot depends on draw.
As for the selfbelief, I have no doubt Nicole believes she can beat anyone. Her attitude is like that. She really believes she will be the best, you can see it in many of her interviews. I am not sure why she cannot win matches against the best players, maybe she needs a plan B when some of her main weapons like serve or forehand isn't working. Also her temper does her no good in tight situations.

VAIDISOVA: TENNIS IS SHOW, TENNIS'S MORE ABOUT FASHION

Nicole Vaidisova lolls out with respite. Nicole Vaidisova edits her hair during waiting for opponent's serve. Nicole Vaidisova smiles. Also the director of French TV offers Czech tennis beauty in slow-motions. He knows what he does. Casual Vaidisova's win over Gagliardi of Switzerland is more atractive for viewers.

"Beauty, glory, talent. She has everything to be a tennis superstar," written Tennis Magazine she always talks about training toil after it.

Magazine Vogue took a picture of 18-yrs-old Vaidisova Nicole is also leading figure of Reebok campaing "I am what I am". And photos from her birthday party spread through the world.

Nicole do you think that women's tennis is changing? Are manager focusing on your image now?
Of course, I think times when it was only about tennis is away. Tennis is above all show for fun now. It's more about clothing, about fashion.

So do you have advisers who determine how to pursue your own image?
You think as they say me if I can cut my hair or go for cosmetics? No. I want to look well herself. I think it pertains to women's tennis.

So that's why you said that women should get bigger Prize Money for as they look on court?
They distorted my words a little and read it out of context. But I said it helps to tennis, that's truth.

Did your statement have response from women's tennis players?
Rather between men's players. "Štěpec" (Radek Stepanek) at once sent me SMS that he will just to be sure go to hairdresser. Girls don't react but boys sometimes laugh at me. Lukas Dlouhy has some allusions too.

You came on court with headphones you listened to music to the last. Which music?
Something quicklier. I always listen to music about 15 mins before my match.

You introduce your new color of your tennis clothing line. When you proposed it did you expect cooling which meteorologists predict?
Yes, I have t-shirt with long sleeves. But it has to freeze I will wear it. I will play in my dress as I can.

But there should be about 10 degrees less in the end of week...
So I have to run faster to warm up.

Derek.

So it's true. Jürgen, like Igor Andreev, is one lucky bastard. But I'd rather see her dating a tennis player than some B-list actor or musician (like that guy she was photographed with at the Reebok birthday party :tape:)

Thanks for the translations, Corpuscle. I'd like to learn Czech one day, but right now I already have my hands full with other foreign languages, so it will probably take a while before I get to it. ;)
