I heard this over the wire yesterday and I heard that the Latinos are very offended in the casting. I am too, cos Whoopi is not latin and shouldn't be taking on such a role. As a black man I feel that she is not the one for the role cos she doesn't look like her and to the best of my knowledge, she doesn't speak spanish.....how will she pull this off?

Did she speak to her agents before she decided to do this role?

No, only cause I think Whoopi would want to do the singing in real life. :o

Umm, please name the current "black" spanish speakers in hollywood today? I seriously doubt if its an american project that the person will be a natural born spanish speaker.

Maybe she will put on a rubber mask to become hispanic, and they will record her dialogue afterwards using a Spanish actress. Now that I would pay to see...

Why would she need a mask to become hispanic?

celia was dark-skinned. exactly how much dark-skinned cubans with african roots are in the business today? not too many, i cant even think of one right now.

her and whoopi kinda look the same. i think whoopi can do the singing, if not, they can fake it. did she actually do the singing in sister act or no?

There are alot of spanish actresses out there who can play Celia. Whoopi is not spanish and cannot play Celia at all.........she is in way over her head.....maybe she can play herself in the Celia movie, but playing Celia is a no go.......she needs to call her pr people and have them call the press to let them know that "as of today Ms. Goldberg has decided not to play Celia Cruz in the upcoming movie due to a fall in the tub" or something but she just can't do it........no way.

when i said in the business, i was referring to the american market/mainstream, not foreign actresses. name some of the dark-skinned spanish actresses in our mainstream. maybe they are totally slipping my mind??

I think Miss Patti Labelle would be a better choice but I aint sure if she can do spanish. :o

celia cruz was not spainish she was cuban there is a difference. She was hispanic which is also not a race just an all encompassing designation for mexicans, cubans, puerto ricans or other latin american peoples. Hispanic people can be white (spainish extract) black(african extract) yellow(asian extract) or red(native extract) ooo all this extracts makes me feel like baking.

hispanic basically means you hail from a latin american region. thats all it means. if whoopi can do the accent and they get someone else for the singing then why shouldn't she play celia cruz? Its not like foreigners haven't come to america and played americans: Nicole kidman is not american yet she plays them all the time. Mel gibson, same thing. I can go on and on and on and on.

Celia was cuban, so what? Thats why its called acting. If whoopi is good enough she can play a cuban singer without having to be cuban herself.

I agree with you but Whoopi is not the best fit cos there are several latin actresses who can play Celia......In a role like this you sometimes need to go with the lesser known actor.........I have seen Whoopi at her best and it is not a good fit for this role.......I prefer to see Iris Chacon or some other latina for that matter.....I am West Indian and when they do a Sidney Poitier movie, I damn sure want to see a West Indian play the role and not someone with a fake accent and who don't know the culture to be representing. When you are playing real life characters, u need to have a little tact in portraying them.....I mean you can get away with it sometimes but 99% of the time it is not reccomended.......

ms. cruz was an interesting woman and i think to make a biopic that does her exuberant personality justice you need to cast an unknown. whoopi goldberg as the salsa queen would be detrimental to the impact of the film because many viewers would still remember they're watching whoopi goldberg. not to say that ms. goldberg doesn't have the talent to pull it off but she's so recognizable that one cannot help but think of her as the comedienne.

a black hispanic actress would be ideal but the casting should be open to african-americans as well as non-black latinas as well.

Why not, she has this same kind of "cool and smily" presence as Celia, and she is a good actress...

Being about Celia's life I just can't imagine it on English, but as it's all about money......
BTW Hispanic for me that's related with culture and language more than to geography or so :)

that's an excellent point! ms. cruz i believe did not speak english, or if she did, it was minimal at best. having it filmed in spanish would be the greatest homage to the salsa queen. it would do her (and her fans) a major disservice to "anglicize" the story.

you make a good argument. my problem with whoopi is that rarely has she been able to lose herself in a role. i'm all too familiar with her facial expressions and cadence and would find it difficult to see her as celia cruz. if she's going to undertake the role, then i think she'd drop everything she's doing for a year and get every nuance about ms. cruz down to perfection. anything less would be disappointing hence the fact that i prefer they cast an unknown.

Celia Cruz kinda looked like Bobbie Givens maybe even Halle. They would be much better suited for this role. Besides it'll probably be english spoken since it's a north american poduction and the songs can be playbacked.

celia lived a long life they can use several actresses. However since this is a bio I would think they would use a BLACK actress since race seems to supercedes everything else in hollywood.

you don't see an american like sam jackson playing The Patriot like mel gibson did. Excuse me but weren't there free blacks during that time? yes there were. didn't crispus attuckus die first in the revolutionary war?

agreed...that is why it was best that an unknown J-lo play Selena than a well known J-lo....I can't see her getting the role now cos she is so much of herself and the separation would be hard.....everything would be analyzed.

True but thats primarily because j lo sucks as an actress. a well bred actress thoroughly trained would be able to submerge herself into the character. j lo cannot do this because her acting skills are limited much like her singing voice.

we all know this cos she is not my idea of an actress. She is more like minor league material.......hence her role selections. "made in Manhattan" looked like it was made at home .......and lets not even talk about the gigli or whatever she is doing with her man of the moment.......another movie another man.....it pays to be a celebrity...

I didn't know alot about her, but I know I grew up watching her on sesame street, and whenever I would see her anywhere on TV I had to stop and listen to her sing and her band play for awhile.
