View Full Version : Evanescence "Bring Me To Life" = Natalie Imbruglia "Torn"

Has anyone else noticed? Bring Me To Life is, like, a note-for-note minor key version of Torn, plus shouty nu-metal bits. What I want to know though is, if Evanescence are so damn evanescent, why the hell haven't they vanished yet?

it also depends on each person's taste? i don't feel that singers like Ashanti has much talent, but there are so many out there idolizing her - which doesn't mean that they have bad taste, just that they're into her music and loves it... or could be half deaf.....

Anyone who's idolising Ashanti has really fucking awful taste. As bad as Evanescence and Imbroolyooly are, they're both ten times better than Ashitti.

Her? No way! Mary J is defintely the Queen of RB Hip Hop and there is no princess, unless we consider the departed alliyah.

That Ashanti must be stopped. Maybe the Divas can gang up on her and take her out at the next Diva's Live concert.

And speaking of Diva's Live is it just me or Does Celine Dion just suck ass?

I wish I could pick the Diva's for the next Concert, my show would rock the house all night long. Oh this should be a new thread.

It has nothing to do with record sales (especially not singles - nobody over sixteen takes singles sales that seriously), it's about musical integrity, ie; not 'selling out' to commercial interests.

In Natalie Imbruglia and Evanescence, you are not really comparing like with like. Compare Natalie to Britney, yes but Evanescence is more like Polly Jean Harvey.

I actually like Evanescence's first two songs, they have another one out now, its pretty good..

And Im not a big Natalie fan, Im sure she does have talent, that song was alright, but the only place i see her now is on TV doing make up commercials... From my understanding Evanescence is 'crossing over,' they've been a Christian band for a while, correct me if Im wrong someone ;)

lol it's the Murder inc morons who call ashanti the princess of RnB and Hip Hop!! not me! it's in most of her annoying music videos.... they got big banners saying that she's the princess of blah blah.
i agree with you, Mary J is definetly the queen. and aaliyah can be the princess hehe.
btw, you like Mary J's Love @ 1st Sight?

and it's not just you... Celine definetly sucks ass... (lol @ this expression :D) i used to like her in the mid/late 90's, but she shouldn't have made a comeback.

OMG! I think I'm witnessing Evanescence's greatest moment - being mentioned in the same breath as Polly Harvey. If any of the artists being discussed in this thread had an ounce of Polly's talent, I'd listen to them...as it is, I'll just ignore them and keep listening to the Deity that is PJ Harvey

Hello gorgeous

I know, I know. I've been a bit of a recluse as of late..I only appear when my radar senses some sort of injustice (such as Polly's name being tainted) or if I smell some chance to ridicule one of the Spice Girls..or if opportunity rises to worship Tori openly..

ok ok ... out of the Neighbours actresses turning singers (Kylie, Nat + Delta) who's the best??

Quality of voice: Delta is #1 though she's still very young. #2 and 3, hm hard to decide.

Most energetic: Definetly Kylie as #1

Will you all stop shitting on Natalie? She is just a pop singer singing uncomplicated and cheesy pop ditties, but she is doing it pretty well compared to some people (*cough*), even if it is actually *unknown* whether she even writes any of the sticky stuff herself (a co-writing credit doesn't mean a thing, if you wanna get really nitpicky). Her songs are well crafted on her second album : yes, overproduced maybe, but still very tastefully done. And might I also add, I like the "Torn" produced by Phil Thornalley a helluavalot better than that Ednaswap crap. No, she probably doesn't write any of her music, but I am not really expecting that much. The lyrics are crap anyway, even if Anne Previn (spelling?) wrote them. Britney, yeah, right... Maybe T.a.t.U. even? Evanescence is cheese, cheese, cheese compared to the Natalie "cheese". :fiery: Note : I'm not a rabid Natalie fan; I listened only to her second album; and it relaxed me basically. And I dare you : tell me how "That day" is similar to Britney... :fiery:

Ya know, I think I migh have gone off to the deep end with Imbruglia yesterday. A bit crazy, really, considering that I *do* think she is crap. :o In the right frame of mind though, I did enjoy her album: as I said, her ballads can be soothing and are very well crafted as "pop songs". So, kudos to the producers. I still think that "Bring me to life" is way cheesier though than "Torn", although Natalie can compete with that song on something like "Satellite". ;)

The comparison between Evanescence and Imbroolyooly was obviously not in terms of musical style - waily goth-rock vs anaemic pop-folk, no similarity there - but in terms of melody. Ignore the backing; the melody of Bring Me To Life IS Torn transposed to a minor key.

I did mean that about tATu. I don't buy this good-artists-must-write-their-own-music shit; it sure hasn't helped the Stereophonics. tATu are as manufactured and poppy as you get; so what? They're doing something interesting within those parameters, and are pretty much the pinnacle of manufactured pop right now.

More than anything else, though, :worship: Polly Jean Harvey :worship:

LOL, I don't give a crap about t.A.T.u actually (whether they are manufactured and poppy or not and whether they write their music or not doesn't really matter to me, as long as they are good); they are not even on my radar. But the thing is, I think that even their music - apart from other things - is shit anyway, not because it is manufactured, but because it is, well, shit, IMO. I'll admit I haven't heard anything by Ashanti, but I'm pretty certain I'll find her or almost everything else better than t.a.T.u. Just my opinion on the matter...

Ashanti should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as.(end of sentence ;) ) /.\Aliyah
Aaliyah will always be the princess of Rn&B, as her music will forever live on, as well her legacy.
Talk about different people
Aaliyah - Classy, 'highest most exhaulted one'
Ashitty - Shitty, trashy.

You're absolutely right...I've been singing them in my head for ages:

Oh, and I have to disagree with everyone else in the thread: both 'artists' are shite.

Maybe this is a leeeetle :topic: (just a leeetle bit!! ;) ) but I think that "Torn" sounds so much like the song "Caught in the Middle" by A1... I heard "CITM" on a local radio station yesterday (or was it the day before?) and I had "Torn" in my head instead... :o I quite like "CITM"!! But I will never, ever, EVER forgive A1 for covering the classic song that is "Take on Me" by A-Ha... *growl* ;)

I'd like the Evanescence song more without the rapping bits... (I know, maybe I am a little 'conservative' with these things? *cough* ;) ) I like some Natalie Imbruglia songs - she's very pretty... (*NOT jealous* ;) )

That gothic screamer shit that is Evanescence has one hit wonder, written all over 'em.

Why don't you follow your own advice and then come back...LISTEN to Evanescence's CD.

As for the one hit wonder thing, Evanescence's new single 'Going Under' is taking a while to break through, but I'm sure it will become just a big a hit as BMTL. And it doesn't have the whole "rap-rock" thing going on.

Bradshaw is so right - Amy Lee has an amazing voice - it's incredibly powerful and clear, and she doesn't overuse it by fucking screaming like Christina or Kelly Clarkson. And her band is great; even if they are buying into all these nu-metal cliches, they are incredibly musicians.

Sartrista - I think it's time to stop thinking that the music world revolves around your opinions

I don't know about any stealing/plagiarising (is that a word? ) from a Russian group - wasn't "Torn" originally done by a Norwegian singer? Aaargh... ;) I don't know - I'll have to investigate here!! I will have to hit Google very soon... ;)
