I thought i'd give a quick review of both albums for anyone thinking of getting them.

MONICA-"Ater The Storm"

This highly anticipated 3rd album from Monica is the follow-up to her 1998 album "The Boy is Mine".Back then, Monica was the reigning teen queen of R&B with no.1 billboard smashes with "The First Night" and the duet with Brandy,"The Boy is Mine".I've been a fan of Monica for a very long time so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this album. Its taken 5 years but was it worth the wait? well...the first thing that struck me when i listened to this album is that Monica definitely sounds VERY grown up now, gone is the innocent,squeaky-clean american teen from her last 2 albums.Of course, this transformation is normal as Monica is no longer that 18 year old from her last album.Missy Elliot-produced tracks such as "Get it Off" and "So Gone" show off the new mature, grown up Monica where she even trys rapping...and pulls it off!!!Monica even duets with bad boy rapper DMX on the sizzling hot track "Don't Gotta Go Home".
Stand-Out tracks on this album are: Get it Off
So Gone
Don't Gotta Go Home
Breaks My Heart
Hurts The Most
Meanwhile the biggest and best song on this album for me is the beautiful " I Wrote This Song".This song deals with a personal tragedy in Monica's life where her boyfriend commited suicide.
Overall, this is a classy, mature, sexy album with Monica's voice as sultry and awesome as ever. This album marks the transformation from the young teen singing big ballads to the super-confident and mature young woman who has gone all "street", the "drive-by" shooting intro signals this. With this album, Monica makes a very welcome return to music and regains her crown as the original "Queen of R&B" while kicking the other pretenders Beyonce and Ashanti to the curb!!!

MYA- "Moodring"

Mya is best known in the UK for her 2001 hit "Case of the Ex" and her 1998 smash "Ghetto Supastar" with Pras and Wyclyf."Moodring" is the follow-up to her 2000 album "Fear of Flying".Well the first thing I noticed from listening to this album was the lyrical content...I couldn't believe I was listening to Mya,the girl who usually looks so reserved and shy in interviews as almost every song on this album is sex-related and the lyrics do get a little pornographic at times.I feel there is too many tracks on this album,19,and the album would be alot better if it was cut down to maybe 12 or 13 tracks. Also, there are alot of songs that just plod along and are really quite bland.Saying this, the songs that are good on this album, tend to be amazing such as "Things Come&Go" and "You".Biggest let-down on the album is what will be Mya's new single to be released, "My love is like..wo". This song is very bland and easy to forget,a shocking selection for a comeback single in my opinion.
Stand-Out tracks - "Things Come&Go
"You"
"After the Rain"
The best song is definitely "Things Come&Go", a song which features Sean Paul and has cool reggae influences.
Overall though, I have to admit that this album is a disapointment and while Mya is trying to make the move to sound more mature and grown up on this album, she fails for trying too hard as the lyrics just sound too OTT sometimes and would even make Lil Kim blush.Meanwhile Monica on her album, carrys off the transformation with complete sucess.
So if y'all are wondering what album to buy this summer, make it Monica's "After the Storm",you won't be disappointed.

I disagree. I think Monica's album is bland and boring, while Mya's is really sexy, jazzy, and grown up. All her songs sound different, have a different beat, almost fit a different genre. It isn't quite of the "must have" quality (like Christina's last album, which you absolutely must get if you don't have it as it is possibly the best album ever made), but still, it is definately a really worthwhile album IMHO. (certainly better than After the Storm:p )

As for the single, "My Love is Like...Wo", it is a really funny song. At first I didn't like it either, but after listening for a couple times, it really grew on me. I can't get it out of my head now:o . So go out and get "Moodring" and "Stripped" people:D .

Is Christina's album really very good??? I wasn't a fan of "beautiful" but i liked "dirrty" and "Fighter".might be tempted to buy it....
mBoyle, what songs on Mya's new album do you like?? coz i find it difficult, except for the good ones i mentioned in my review, to distinguish one song from the other, quite alot of them sound the same.

Mya really bothers me now... Why did she go the slutty way? I mean, to me, that just cheapens her whole appeal.

And yes, Christina's album is amazing. I don't really like her, but I just bought the CD a few days ago.... the songs she has not released are wonderul. Cruz, Soar, I'm Ok, and my favorite of all Make Over are tremendous!!!!

I've heard some of Monica's CD...and honestly I wasn't too impressed. I've only heard that My Love is Like Woooooooooooooooooo song by Mya from the new disc and I was like Woooo, this is horrible.

I was expecting much more from her.

I love the Whoa song! I'm not a big fan of Maya but have come to realize she has more talent than I originally thought. I'm starting to like her now. I like Monica too. I haven't heard either album though.

I've heard this latest release of Christina's with Lil Kim on it (I think) I really like it its "very" RnB. Maybe if I see it cheap somewhere I'll pick up Christina's album.

It's $13.88 at Best Buy ;)
And I really recommend it - and I'm unbiased and not really a true fan of X-Tina's. It's some good stuff!!

Music update: Monica

By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY
Associated Press
07/04/2003

The delays and false starts surrounding the release of Monica's third album, "After the Storm," are a minor bump in the road compared with the personal upheaval she's endured.

During the four years since the release of her two-million-plus-selling album "The Boy Is Mine," Monica witnessed her first love commit suicide, then saw an ex-boyfriend incarcerated on a murder charge.

Quite a load for a former teen R&B queen barely into adulthood. Yet the 22-year-old has emerged from personal tragedies with her serene demeanor, positive vibe and trademark sassy attitude intact.

She's also got a No. 1 album. Behind the hit single "So Gone," Monica's album debuted at the top of the charts, selling 185,506 copies its first week out, according to Nielsen Soundscan figures released by J Records.

There are no mournful songs on her disc - even the tune she penned about her ex-lover's suicide is an up-tempo groove that's both a tribute to him and an affirmation of her own life.

"The positive side is that experience in those things, and making it through, makes me feel encouraged about continuing on," she said during an interview at the J Records offices. "There's never been a time where I've said, 'I just can't make it.' "

That seems to be Monica Arnold's motto in life. The singer was just 12 when

she was discovered by fellow Atlanta resident (and big-time record producer) Dallas Austin. A year later, she had her first smash hit: "Don't Take It Per˝˝˝sonal (Just One of Dem Days)," a groove brimming with attitude that belied her young age.

"She was very mature, and even though she didn't have a record out, she already acted like a true diva," joked producer Carsten "Soulshock" Schack, who along with partner Kenneth Karlin produced some of her earliest hits as well as three tracks on her new album.

The hits continued for Monica over the years, from her Grammy-winning duet with fellow one-named teen singer Brandy, "The Boy Is Mine," to "The First Night." By the time she was 18, she was an established R&B princess with millions of album sales to her credit.

Yet despite Monica's glamorous world, the self-described homebody never went Hollywood. Keeping her connection to the streets is how she became close to Jarvis Weems, who had at one point been involved in drug trade.

The pair dated off and on for a couple of years, and were together at the time of his death. In fact, Monica was next to Weems when he shot himself to death. Weems was distraught over his brother's death; he was sitting in a car near the cemetery, where he had just visited his brother's grave.

The devastated singer spent the first few months afterward in denial and depression, later lessened by spiritual guidance from her mother and stepfather, a minister. Still, Monica doubts she'll ever recover.

"Afterward, I felt, 'What else could I have done?' You replay that situation over and over and you switch it around: 'Maybe if I had said this, or if I would have done that,' " she says.

Monica endured another crisis with an ex-boyfriend when Corey Miller - better known as rapper C-Murder, the brother of Master P - was charged with murder in the slaying of a teenager. Although Miller is in jail with no bail awaiting trial, the pair remain close

Given all the drama she had experienced, Monica wanted her upcoming album to reflect the serious tone her life had taken.

"I just wanted to give the people back something that had personal passion ..."she said.

Yet the first single released from the project was a fluffy dance track that borrowed its beat from Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T." It went nowhere on the charts. A follow-up song, "Too Hood," also got a lukewarm response. The album's tentative release was pushed back several times.

In addition, it was heavily bootlegged in Japan, according to J Records. That prompted Monica to go back into the studio and retool the album, with help from Missy Elliott, the album's executive producer

One tune from the old project that remains on the new disc is "I Wrote This Song," which speaks of her relationship with Weems.

"Sometimes the smallest things happen to an artist, and everything just crashes," Schack said. "She's found a way to deal with it."

IMO, Monica's album is the best album out of all of them(Beyonce, Mya, Ashanti). I guess you have to be a mature listener to agree with me.

It seems that alot of you have not followed Mya until MTV. Mya's first video was on the lines of my love is like whoa. When she did It's All About Me, she was bending over and all that. Mya has grown up even moreso now.lol

Of course I bought Mya's album, because I wanted her moodring calendar and she looks sooooooo fine every month. But I cannot sit here and say her album was great. It was ok. The only songs that really stood out besides her first single was He looks too good(something like that), and the second track was good also. Everything else was a brief listen to about a 1/4th of the song and then a skip. On mood ring she is honest, but some of the beats come off as forced and they really don't match up with her vocals. But the calendar is the bomb, I don't regret my purchase. LOL

Monica's album is for the serious listener. I find that her only flaw is that she never changes tempo that much on her album. Missy's production is incredible, so gone is so infectious. However, some of Monica's material is not catchy enough considering that she wrote 75% of the album. But after a couple of listens you can appreciate the effort, and become accustomed to the songs. She has a couple of upbeat tracks, but the rest is pretty much mid tempo to slow jams. I think that monica did a good job.

Christina's album is a schizophrenic arrangement of songs that mainly comes off as "trying too hard". The album has everything from R&B to Pop to Rock to Neo-Soul, which is a bit off-putting to me. When Christina gets to an emotional part of a song, she starts to oversing. I think the extra runs are not needed at certain times in the song. Of course you have your standouts, but the album is so all over the place it can become boring trying to distinguish what she is trying to accomplish.

Miss Harloo I was born in '71 does that make me "mature" enuf? I luv me some Miss Monica but I'm still waitin for that "big" song of hers but it hadn't come. Chile I mean Mary big, Toni big, Anita Baker big. So Gone is nice but it aint special. Just another good rnb/hip hop jam.

Miss Bee I just like cuz she got mad tude and she lookin good but it aint like I'm runnin out to buy her new album.

Miss Mya I heard on the radio and she was talkin like this new album was gonna be more like a female Dangelo or Maxwell album but My Love Is Like Whoa aint on that smooth vibe at all.

Miss Christina do need to fall back on the screaming but in Miss Thang opinion Miss Christina got the best voice. I heard all these girls sing live and to me Miss Christina is da one who can truly blow.

Christina's album is not that good.. Really long, and it getting really annoying until you get Dirrty which is my favorite song.. Cruz and Soar.. bleeeh.. I also hate "I'm Ok.." her voice is weird, then she stars crying aah.! I know it's touching, whatever it is.. But sincerly.. I don't like it.

Her best songs are with Lil' Kim and Dirrty. Then she's the X-Tina I was waiting for.

I love Monica's 'So Gone', and I'm gonna try my hard to get her album. I love her voice, it's so natural and so tuned up :D Love it! I also love Brandy's voice and album.

And I'm sorry, Mya's best works until now, were Ghetto Superstar (which I love) and the Case of the EX.. Which can get annoying if u listen to it many times.. Tho I hate, HATE 'My love is like Whoa!' and not like Monica and Brandy, Mya's voice is very boring... But I know she's a hard working singer, but it just doesn't pleases me.. I also loved her on Lady Marmalade, but again, she had the backups from Lil' Kim, X-Tina and Pink.. :p

That's my opinion.. I wouldn't try to get Mya's album, but if it happens someone gives me as a birthday, or christmas' present, I'll be fine with it :o

cc, I don't think It's All About Me wasn't that sexy. I kept thinking about Mya being underage, bending over for the world to see her stuff. LOL. I do think My love is like whoa is like a novelty song to get people's attention.

When Mya tried to go the dance route which she did well, noone responded. IMO, "Case of the X" was her best video and it went unnoticed. MTV did not play it, and BET did not take to it. Now, "My Love is Like Woah" gets almost as much play as Ghetto Superstar did on MTV. I think the song is a good marketing strategy.

Miss Thang, IMO Monica will never be on that mature level as a toni, or Mary. What I meant was more maturer than what the kids are use to today. Case and point: I remember when Ashanti was out, and Tweet came out at the same time. Many were saying that Tweet album was not good and boring. I got the album and while each track was a little slow, I thought her album was outstanding. Also, I could understand how they thought it was not good. They are use to fast beats, no live instrumentation, and consider alot of slow tempo albums to be boring.
But they were praising ashanti's album, which I found to be flat and uninspired.
