Congrats to Angela Haynes for qualifying for the main draw. Angela (#308) defeated Julia Vakulenko (#100), the #4 seed in her final qualifying match. It's probably the biggest win of Angela's career. Angela is an 18 year old from Compton, California.
Yeah, I didn't know Angela was African American, nor that she was from Compton. :)

I only got to see the last set and few games of Ashley def. Jidkova and the whole of Frazier vs. Black.
Both matches featured players with strappings. Alina's right thigh and Cara's left thigh just above the knee.
I had never seen Alina play before so I don't know if it hindered her at all. She resided at the baseline mostly.
Ashley was\pretty aggressive. Not serving and volleying but just would follow in on a groundie and would force Alina to pass her...which Alina seemed incapable of doing (hitting the ball wide mostly).
Towards the end we were treated with Alina throwing her racquet to the ground in disgust and muttering to herself. First it was in Russian. Then it was Russian followed by "Come on!" Then, when the end was near, it was "Hit the ball, Alina!"
She was disgusted with herself in the end...tossing her racquet at her bench.

Thanks for the pic Shooter. Go Angela! Go Maria Vento!
BTW, Amy Frazier def. Cara Black, something like 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 I think. Best of luck against an off Dani!

Cara could've won the first set. She had poor body language and was hardly getting her serve in. Despite all this, she had lots of game/break points.
Then again, maybe I'm biased. Nothing personal against Frazier but her game bores me. She played as you'd expect her to - big groundies, relatively poor serve.
During 3 sets there were only about 3-5 "wow" points. You'd expect Cara not to reach the screamers on the lines but there were some clearly in shots that she made no effort for.

Yeah, Marion played extremely well. She's got a lot of power in her legs and just really just drives off of them. Laura played great too. That was an excellent match. In fact, this is the most competitive tournament I've been to. Not a lot of blow-outs.
Alina should have beat Ashley, but as she did before against Lastra, Ashley likes playing a lot of psychological games. It worked as Alina just got too frustrated, much like Laura against Bartoli. You can't win like that.
The Frazier/Black match was a marathon match. The first game alone went nearly a half hour. The match went for close to 2 and a half hours. It was incredible.
Here come some pics....

I'm short on time otherwise I'd rename each pic so you know who you're looking at instead of having to open each one. Sorry bout that. I have a bunch more so if any of you wanna see them, I'll post more. Otherwise, maybe I'll just create a new thread every day so I don't crowd the results threads. And I haven't forgot about the qualifying pics, I just don't have the time to post right now.

oh yeah, about Bartoli, cool little tidbit here. After the match was over and she set down her raquet, she turned right around and took off two of her wristbands and tossed one like right towards where I was sitting, but those stupid things can't travel very far so the guy right in front of me caught it, the a-hole. :)

It's always fun to see pics, not just of the players, but of the venue too - particularly if you've never been there. Thanks for posting your pics. Look forward to seeing the ones from the qualies too.
