View Full Version : Wildcards should be scrapped

There is no reason for wildcards in this game. I agree we should make it more realistic, but not to the point of insanity. Players in this game don't really represent a country... it's only what they say they want to do. For instance, a player like Bryanne Applegate says she wants to play for the "United States." This player is now lowly ranked, but gets wildcards into all the American events. Other players that do better than her, but are still ranked too lowly to get into main draws have to play qualifying because they represent a country like South Africa, where there aren't any events.

Then players like Sabine, who is in the top 20, can't even gain entry into some tier 2 main draws because wildcards are given to American nobodies.

I think we should consider getting rid of wildcards.

Wild cards will stay, but still there will be a different process of giving them so it can be a fair process, everybody has the same chances, and there is not an excessive quantity of them to only one player.

Why not do wildcards like the pro tour does? Its up to the tournament organizer (alx) who gets them. He can set his own guidelines as to how he gives them out. Any junior or could ask for one at any time, and its up to alx if they get them or not.

Someone like Bryanne, Sabine, or Jennifer who have been around for a long time might get one to a tourney over a junior (say Daniilidou) who hardly participates even if it is in Daniilidou's country. That seems more fair to me than just handing out WC cuz its someones country.

I only give WC if someone is entered in the event and can't make it to main draw or a junior asks for it because it is her own country.

But honestly, I'd like for them to be scrapped too. Less work and less arguing. I agree it's not 100% fair, so I think we should just go by rankings.

I have no problem with wildcards, I think that the process just needs to be altered a bit in the selection.

I dont think that the nationality factor should represent the decision so much, but I like that winners of challengers can earn play-in wildcards, and I also think that players who have played well trying to work their way up should deserve a few wildcards here and there if they are needed, or even for players who are trying to get their ranking back up, perhaps if they did well at a certain tournament before (like winner or maybe finalist if it's a big event).

As for the ones who are just missing out on the maindraw spots...I am not going to necessarily argue the point as I am not in the position to say that I can understand truly where you are coming from as I was fortunate to start this game from the very beginning so I have never had to play qualifying because of that. *But*, I know that if I were in that position, I would be checking the entry lists before the final lists are made so that if I didn't want to play qualifying and thought this was a possiblity, I would switch over to the weaker event. There are two tournaments most weeks, this is the point of them. Maybe you should try and find a compromise between playing a few qualifying events for higher tiers, and playing a couple lower tier events to get maindraw so that you aren't putting yourself in the spot to qualify week after week if your ranking isn't good enough to make the maindraws for the time being.

That is excellent:

I agree 100%
