Samantha Soren

Samantha Soren will play this week in Palermo as she trys to play as much tennis aloud since she missed a good part of the early season. She plays in qualifying against Svetikova. "I dont really know her game but I am still confident that I can win in 2 sets against her. It would be a great disapointment if I lost this match." This tournament is played on clay. "It is of couse not one of my favorite surfaces and it is in the hard court season so I wont try to do a lot here in Palermo and just try to relax myself for future tournaments." Soren is hopeful to play doubles with Hingisafrilia.

Arantxa Danese:"I'm really happy to in Italy and play in my home Country. It's always a good feeling playing at home.Even if I live in Turin I know that here I have great fans of mine.I hope to play well.I'm a little nervous because I have to proove to my fellow country player that I'm a good player.my husband is always with me and this is a great relief for me.I would like to thanks Wong that she is a very nice person and I hope I'll play with her in the future, maybe when my doubles ranking will be a little higher.During the last couples of days I worked really hard to be ready to this tournament and I hope I'll do some damage in the draw.
Good luck to everyone who is a friend of mine!!"

Vicario Continues Good Form

Palmero AP- Sandy Vicario is in the best form of her life. Three weeks ago in Eastbourne, the Spainard showed she could play on grass by upseting then #1 Marteen Huubere, but her run ended in the semifinals with a loss to Karla Herrera. Huubere would go on to win Wimbledon two weeks later. The lady Huubere defeated in the final of Wimbledon, Larissa Ferrer, was the woman Vicario lost to in Wimbledon--in the semis, in three tight sets. Vicario blew off 3 seeds including 3rd ranked and Roland Garros champion Anjelica de la Courtiere-Ferrero. Now this week Sandy, who has one career singles title, issued a first round upset of fellow compatriot, and 5th seeded(26th ranked) Carmen Prado. Both players love the clay, but Vicario seemed more agressive from the get go, as she felt at home on the dirt. She only made 10 unforced errors as she squeaked through two tough sets, 7-6(5) 7-5. "Carmen and I were pretty even today, I just managed to win the big points, but it was a great match." Vicario will play former Roland Garros champion and one of the tour's most popular players, not to mention top seed in Palmero, Jane Wong. "Jane and I are friends from Survivor, and she is one of the nicest people you will meet. She is a great clay-courter, she's great all around on any court, acctually. But it will be very tough to pull out a win here." Sandy is playing doubles with Julia Lappentti this week.

well done Rachel-Anne!!!

Jul 10th, 2003, 11:30 AM
interview with Rachel-Anne Fleischmann after her victory against 6th seed Caroline Menard

Q: congratulation R-A, did you expect such a easy match?
R-A: it wasn´t easy at all. maybe the scoreline looks like a easy match, but you know one or two balls can chance a whole match. and so i´m very lucky about my win today.

Q: you are playing well the last few weeks, has anythink changed or how can you explain it?
R-A: yes i´m doing better the last few weeks, but i´m still not there where i want to be. there is still a lot of work. i´m focused to work on my mental game, and on my serve. i did well at wimbledon and the 7:9 in the final set vs. Huubere shows me i´m on the right way.

Q: you lost 7:9 vs. Huubere and you mean you are on the right way?
R-A: yes i think i´am, sure it is hard to loe the 3rd set 7:9, but after the lost second set i was happy to play such a good 3rd set, i´m sure without the mental work i would have lost the 3rd set badly.

Q: now we will look forward, you will face 2nd seed Ruflina Taliamanosoko now. so what do you expect?
R-A: yes, i´m very happy to play her again on clay. i played her already in Acapulco, and lost 3rd set tie-break. and so i want revanche (loud laugh)
no, i don´t want to put too much pressure on me, she is a great player and i think noone expect me to win - but i hope i can give her a great fight.

Lucia Kurkova(4) def. Juliana Lapentti 0/6 6/4 6/2

This girl has so much future, she really surprised me at the first set. She has the perfect game on clay and will be a threat in a few months. After the first set i raised my level of play, i think this was the key of the match, it helped me to win the match easily in the third set

Arantxa Danese:"I'm really happy of my win.Kourkova is really a tough player to beat.I had to play really well to beat her.But to performe well here is a dream for me.I was really tense at the beginning of the match but I was able to move the ball around the court as well.In the second set kourkova played unbelievebly well and I thought that I would have lost, because I was very tired but I hang in there and that was the key of the match.I tried to put every ball in play and maybe kourkova got a little bit frustrated.my moon ball forehand is a weapon... Sorry Kourkova with the way I played to win the match...!I'm trying to turn my game into a more aggresive one but it take time to do so.. and I don't know which my future result will be..nowI have to play Ruflina, she is a nice person and I'm looking forward to play aginst her.

Ruflina and Jane finally having success

It took them to travel to a small clay tournament on the eve of the hardcourt tournament to do it, but Jane Wong and Ruflina Taliamanosoko are finally having success in singles and doubles at the same event.

"I can't recall when Jane and I were both in the semifinals in singles and doubles, maybe at Bogota or Acapulco, but either way, it's rare for us to have success all the way around."

After seeing her ranking fall from a career high of #2 down to #9, things have not been so great for the Botswanian on the tour. "Sometimes you just get tired and your level of play goess down but you just keep slugging through and try to make the best of it."

Ruflina will now face the fiesty Italian, Arantxa Danese in the semifinals. "It will be tough facing an Italian in Italy and also Arantxa is a very nice young girl that is new to the tour. She is one of the juniors that I know better and she is extremely nice and wanted to play doubles with either me or Jane, but unfortunately she couldn't. It will be a tough match and I'm just going out there to do my best."

Ruflina and Jane tears of sadness

Just one day after the tragic pass away of Tobias Applegate, husband of Ruflina. To the shock of the centre court crowd, Ruflina plays on and eventually win with good friend Jane after Jane lost the final to up and coming star Arantxa Danese

Jane was especially gracious to her defeat to great junior Arantxa, she say in the singles ceremony that Arantxa will be a future slam champion, and that she is too good for her today. Especially her consistent groundstroke which keep wrong footing Jane in the final set.

But the emotions do not flow until the doubles final, when the pair survive a set deficit and 3-5 down to clinch the doubles title in 3 hard fought sets. After Ruflina hit a volley well outside Lucia Kukova reach. Ruflina uncharacteristically stand staionary, covering her face. Jane embrace Ruflina before having an emotion hug with Lucia and Jennifer, all of them by now are in tears. Ruflina got a standing ovation for her dedication to the sport even after the tragic news.

Here is an interview with Jane

Q: How would you describe your day?
A: Sad, very sad... (teary)

Q: When did you know Ruflina decision to play on the doubles final?
A: I told Ruflina to go to La Costa and get a good rest, Ruflina being a strong girl told me that the show must go on. I am glad I did not let her down in doubles today.

Q: Talk about your singles first, are you dissappointed?
A: Well, I woul dhave like to win the singles today as well, but Arantxa is just too good, she is a future player to look out for. I follow her result and her matches a lot, her result in junior is very good. I watch a few of her matches when Mary was a junior and I think she is one of the few players who I think will make a big noise in this year

Q: How difficult was the doubles match?
A: It was difficult, definitely the saddest doubles match I ever play even when we win. Ruflina trying to hide herself in the match being pumped up and try to make joke as usual, but it is difficult when I know that she is sad inside.

Q: Will you be playing Fed Cup?
A: I will fly to La Costa with Ruflina in the next hour, and then I will go to Bulgaria on Wednesday. Ruflina will take a rest next week, but she insist on me not to withdraw from Fed Cup coz it is a big thing for Hong Kong and she say that she will hate me if I withdraw, I will stay with her unitl Wednesday.

Arantxa Danese:"I'm so happy of having won my first single title and to do it in my home country is even sweeter. But I have to say that I'm really sorry for what happened to Ruflina. You are a great champion and person to keep it playing after what happened to her.I have no words to say.I don't want to make any comment on my win today because i'm really sad for Ruflina.I hope you'll RECOVER SOON.Thanks to all of you for the support and I'll be back next year to defend my title. Now I feel different emotions:a great joy and a great sadness for what happened.Ruflina be strong and keep it playing.." Arantxa left the interview in tears

Arantxa after a few minutes come back with her husband.
Arantxa:"I'm sorry for having run away in that way but I got emotioned and I coudn't bear the situation any more.I would like to thank everyone for the support because all of you were simply fantastic.I thought that I would have lost without the crowd cheering me so much in the third set.I would like to thank my husband too, because without the hard work with him I would not have been here.I know that I have to work hard to keep my level of play and to improve myself a little bit more but I'm happy for how things went this week.I hope I'll be able to win other tournaments on clay.Maybe Roland Garros in the future.. Thanks Jane for the kind words you always say to me. A great kiss to Ruflina. Bye"
