  Poor Anya. I don't know how the match went or at what point she got hurt but it's a real shame. I hear she strained her right thigh. It's possible her retirement is precautionary and she may still be fit for Istanbul.

I'm sure her primary concern is playing Roland Garros as she has big points to defend. Skipping Istanbul may be a good idea as she'll be much fresher for Paris but I guess this kinda screws up her plans. Here's to a speedy recovery! :)

And also, how cool is it that Anya finally got her own forum? About time too! :yeah:

:awww: It sounds like she really didn't want to have to give up. She's a real fighter. If it is just a thigh strain then presumably it's not too serious and a bit of rest and treatment will sort it out.

small interview giving by Anna to Eurosport Russia

She said that recovering after injury is going quite well and fast. She WILL absolutely take part in RG

she want to take part in Olimpics But she knew it's too dificult cos need to be in top 4 russians

If Anna is healthy this is a good occasion to win a Tournament, because Myskina is not in best form, then the 2nd ranked player is Groenefeld and I think that Anna can win with Groenefeld.

I don't think this draw is too bad. Anya has what it takes to get to another match-up with Sveta.

I always say this but I don't believe drawing a qualifier in the first round is always great news, especially since Anna had been slightly injured. Coming into a tournament against someone who's already won three matches can be tricky.

I'm hoping for some comprehensive TV coverage this year. Anna's seeded so there's a better chance her match will be shown. Still probably won't be though. I'll be on the live scoreboard in that case.

Anna Opens Roland Garros Account

Anna Chakvetadze won her opening match against Czech qualifier Eva Birnerova 7-5, 6-4 at Roland Garros yesterday.

Chakvetadze had lost her last three matches and was under an injury cloud coming into this years event. :scared: But is seems the 19 year old Russian, who attends Moscow University, has recovered fully after a relatively impressive victory. :bounce: Anna is currently without a coach, (travels with her dad on tour) is yet to win her first WTA Tour title, but is certain to be a force if she plays to her true potential at this years French Open having made the 3rd round last year in her debut here. :sport:

Anna’s opponent will be Na Li of China. Li has a 23-11 record this season, has won 12 of her past 15 matches and has made a quartefinal, semifinal and final all in the past month, boosting her ranking to world number 38. :scared: These two have met once. That being in Los Angeles last year which Chakvetadze won 6-4, 7-5. :rocker: :singer: A repeat of that performance would be wonderful for the 27th seed. :aparty:

Anna will also take to the court today to play doubles with fellow Russian Elena Vesnina. They will play against France’s Stephanie Foretz and Italian Antonella Serra-Zanetti. :bounce:  :bounce:

With the rain delay, Anna's match is currently stuck at

Anna vs Na *5-6

Anna had a break point in Na's last service game which would have set her up nicely before the rain started. Unfortunately she couldn't convert so now has to come straight back out and serve to stay in the set. :scared: It's been a very close match so far, as expected...

A tough match for Anna. Na is a very dangerous opponent who should be ranked higher. It would be great if Anna can pick up the win but no big deal if she doesn't because she is playing a very solid player.

Wintermute

Well Anna came out for the second session and was serving to reach a tiebreak. She got to 30-0 and then lost the next 9 points. :fiery:

Luckily she's managed to stay in touch in the second set, current score:

Anna vs Na 5-7 2-2* 15-40

Now :rain:

Anna has not been playing as well in the second session as she was in the first so rain is probably a good thing. She has time to regroup and hopefully come out a bit better.

Li bt Chakvetadze 7-5 6-3

It was a pretty close match overall but Anna made too many unforced errors at crucial points. She converted 2 of 6 break points compared to Na's 4 of 5. Anna just didn't win the vital points. I think Na also coped with the rain delays better.

Excerpt from the LA Times and reprinted in full on the GM:

http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=239606

This week's incident involving Aravane Rezai occurred Monday during a morning training session on Court 8 and was apparently triggered by a misunderstanding over practice times between her and Russian teenage players Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Vesnina. Rezai's father and coach, Arsalan, refused to comment on the matter to L'Equipe, according to a reporter from the newspaper.

There was no official complaint or report made to the WTA by the Rezais or by either Chakvetadze or Vesnina. But French Open officials are investigating, according to the tournament's sports director Stephane Simian.

"We listened to both sides and we're investigating right now," he said on Wednesday. "So at this point, I can't give you much more information. We're still looking at it. Obviously, it's word against word. There's not a whole lot of evidence. It's difficult to make a judgment. We'll continue to investigate."

Aravane Rezai, who defeated Ai Sugiyama, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round Wednesday, said she would "rather not discuss" the incident.

Later, Chakvetadze held no such reservations after her second-round loss to Na Li. She was animated and replaying the incident through gestures with two Russian reporters in a small interview room and went through the story again with The Times. She said that when the matter escalated, Arsalan Rezai got physical with Sergey Vesnina, the father of Elena.

"He hit him with his head to the nose," Chakvetadze said, adding that that the elder Rezai inadvertently hit his daughter with a racket.

"He make a backswing to hit someone, like my dad, and he hit his daughter with a racket to the face," she said. " … She started to cry and her mother, I think she thought somebody [one] of our dads hit her, and she started to scream."

Chakvetadze said Rezai's father left and returned with two policemen and accused the Russians of starting the incident. The L'Equipe story noted that side of the story, "Arsalan Rezai said he had been hit in the forehead with a racket and that his daughter had also been hit."

"He's crazy, actually," Chakvetadze said, laughing. "…Yesterday, he said to Vesnina's dad, 'OK, peace.' We have nothing [against] his daughter. She's OK."

Said the French Open's Simian: "There was no report filed. We talked to all the parties involved, and decided there was no clear evidence what happened. It was one of those cases where obviously with the weather being cold and uncertain and some rain around, everyone is a bit more nervous." A reporter suggested ... edgy?

"That's the word," he said.

Yes Anna is certainly around the same standard as Safina if not better.

I don't think Anna is quite at Dinara's level yet. Dinara made the quarters of Roland Garros and she only lost because she mentally froze. However, that was clay and this is grass so we shall see...

Qualies are over so Anna's R2 opponent will either be Aiko Nakamura or Emmanuelle Gagliardi who had a couple of fairly easy matches in qualifying.

Some of the others from this shoot are awful (Nadia :tape: ). I wonder if the players would be offended by the title of the article: "The Court-esans". A courtesan is basically a high class prostitute! :o

Good scoreline. :D As long as Anna plays on grass can't be said Anna is lucky.
In 2004 closest of running out of Wimbly, cause Surbiton didn't count and Patty got last minute WC (previous results don't matter :o )
Last year played Qual so increasing chance of getting injuries, nevertheless managed to win matches with injuries. Had a very good grass season but with a little more luck could have gone fuhrter (MP vs. Sveta).
This year unlucky to draw Vera Z. who plays her best ever tennis on grass.
Grass is Anna's surface let's hope in the future she'll be a little luckier on her fav. surface.

2005 WARSAW CLAY (O) Qual-2 A. CHAKVETADZE 7-6(4) 6-4

I can understand where you're coming from. You like to shoot in a very naturalistic way which is very far away from these highly stylised shots. I do find it quite fascinating when a famous subject such as an athlete or movie star does a photoshoot in which they subvert their publicly recognised persona. I quite like this shot of Anna because it's so different but I do have a problem with the title of the article which seems to be comparing the top Russian women with prostitutes. Maybe they are going for a David LaChappelle vibe but that part leaves a nasty taste.

Vesnina will be tough, but Anya seems to usually outperform her when they meet. It may go 3, considering Anna's rusty and has been struggling with ehr health, but I believe that the chance for an upset is slim.

I'm a fan of both players too but I want Anna to win. This is going to be extremely difficult for her though - Justine is pretty much the favourite for the title here and has been imperious in her first two rounds. I don't think they've ever played each other so will be interesting to see how Anna handles it.

Ideally I'd like Anna and Daniela to win their third rounds so they meet fourth round. Probably not too likely. :p

 Not an unexpected result, even though I was hoping for a different outcome. Too bad Anna wasn't able to hold serve after breaking JHH late in the second set. So Anna's out of Wimbledon. Did anyone else see her match against Juju? I managed to catch some of it on video and the end from Nigel in the Cocktail Party (:yeah:).

Anna didn't play badly but Justine was playing a near impeccable match. Anna was a break down receiving serve at 2-3 in the first set and had a clear winner down the line overturned by the umpire, Roland Herfel. That was a bit of a shame because Anna won the next two points and could have perceivably broken back without the umpires intervention.

In the next game Anna went break point down when she approached the net and Justine hit a great passing shot. Anna took a big divet out of the service box with her racquet! She got broken on the next point and looked like she was about to do a Marat Safin and destroy the racquet. She has very high expectations of herself and seems to get very annoyed when it's not going her way. Lena Vesnina was watching and seemed to be finding something funny at this point - perhaps something Pierre-Yves, who was sat behind her, was saying?

A ball girl fainted in the next game. It was a bit of a scorcher for England on Friday.

At 5-2 in the second, Justine had a shaky game and Anna took advantage to break. :yeah: Unfortunately, that was the last game Anna won. In the next game Justine hit a backhand down the line that was going wide when it clipped the top of the tape and fell in. Anna had a good laugh about it so at least she was in good humour despite the scoreline.

This was Anna's best ever Wimbledon performance and she has lots to be positive about. :D She's got a fair number of points to defend coming up in the US and I'll be interested to see how she copes this year compared to last when she still had a coach.

Chakvetadze def. Lisjak 7-6(2) 7-6(3)

I'm sure Anna will be thrilled to have won a point for Russia on her Fed Cup debut but not very pleased with how she did it.

She served 10 double faults and for most of the first set her first serve percentage was hovering around 33%. She also let 4 match points slip away when serving at 6-5.

However, she did manage to come back from 2-5 down when Lisjak was serving for the second set. And she played very well in the tiebreaks.

I'll be interested to hear what Tarpishev thinks of her performance.

I read an interview with Shamil Tarpishev recently where he said that Anna was a good player but she couldn't sustain a high level over a number of matches. If she plays both singles I don't see her playing doubles regardless of the prior results.

Actually I think Tarpishev was being quite critical of her coaching situation. He was saying she'd get a lot of expert advice by training with the Fed Cup team.

According to the WTA she currently has no coach but "travels with her father". Tarpishev was indicating that the situation with Rikard Allgurin last year was not good for Anna because she didn't stay with him for very long. Coaches need some reassurance of stability if they are considering working with a player.

Nigel Sears obviously helped Daniela and Amanda Coetzer so he wouldn't be a bad choice. But it doesn't look like Anna is in a hurry to get a coach (although I think she should).

OK, here's an interview Anna did with Izvestia just before the Fed Cup tie against Croatia.
(Disclaimer: This is my own translation so if I've misinterpreted anything then I guess I suck. :p)

http://images.izvestia.ru/77990.jpg
Tennis player Anna Chakvetadze: “Coach must be easy-going, but also not dull”

Tomorrow in Umag, Croatia, the Russian women’s team will begin their Fed Cup tie against the Croatians. The outcome is highly important: in the case of failure our team, which won the tournament the last two years, will be forced out of the elite World Group. Personnel problems within the team has led to the unexpected call-up of 19 year old Anna Chakvetadze who has never before played for her country. On the eve of the encounter, Izvestia correspondent Vladimir Rausch met the Russian wildcard.

Question: In Croatia now there is an awful heat. How are you coping?
Anna: Here it is at least 40 degrees. Though I heard that in Moscow it’s also not very cold… We try to avoid the most intense heat. Our first training session is early, at 9.00, and the second is from 4.00. We could of course start later but the match will be played at that time. It’s necessary to get accustomed to it.

Is everyone training hard?
Sparingly, everyone trains no more than one and a half hours. There is no sense over-exerting ourselves now, we need to conserve our efforts for the matches.

In Umag is there much talk about the contest?
So far I only saw posters in our hotel. Not in the city although we’ve not had chance to go into the centre yet. There are a lot of Russian tourists here. We hope they’ll come and support us, even without any posters up.

Has Team Captain Shamil Tarpischev discussed how he plans to use you?
We’ve not spoken about that yet. There’s still plenty of time, all Friday. Nothing in training…

The Captain said before departing Russia that he would play you in Singles and Doubles. Do you feel capable of playing both?
Yes. Personally I really hope that the team will have already won the tie before the Doubles, which is always the last match. It means we can relax a bit more for that one.

Do you know the Croatian players well?
Their top player, Karolina Sprem, I played twice before and won both times. But our last match in Miami was a real struggle and it took three sets. Lisjak I’ve never played, but Vera Dushevina has a good record against her. She’s played and beaten the Croatian No. 2 twice.

Next match – your debut for the national side. Nervous?
It’s still early for that. I’m just concentrating on training now… The excitement comes an hour or two before the start of the match. The atmosphere of a big match, the responsibility of representing my country, will certainly add a little pressure. But this usually passes once you are into the match.

You’re friends with Lena Vesnina, you are doubles partners. Do close friendships help with your tennis?
I’ve known Lena since childhood. She’s from Sochi where I frequently trained. Then she began coming to Moscow. We’ve got similar personalities – both very combative. Clearly this helps our mutual understanding on court. Obviously there’s also a downside. Recently at Wimbledon we had to play against each other in Singles – it was difficult. We train together and we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses very well.

At the beginning of the year you searched for a new coach. Who did you select?
I’m still looking. The main requirement – they must offer me something new. In addition, they must match my personality: be easy-going, not hot-tempered, but also not dull. And to travel with me to tournaments, but the majority of coaches – they’ve got family and don’t want to travel. The salary? If there’s a worthy candidate we’ll agree something.

Are you making the decision on a coach alone, or are your parents involved?
We’re dealing with it together.

In the past year you worked with Dutch coach Eric van Harpen. Why did you split?
He is a quality coach but off the court… he’s a very particular person. Distant, hard-edged… How did Martinez and Schnyder, who he also trained, get along with him? However I’ve maintained good relations with Eric. He has a base in Germany; could be, I’ll go there in a couple of weeks.

Previously van Harpen has also worked with Anna Kournikova. Did he ever speak about it?
A few anecdotes, pretty funny too. What exactly? You know, I can’t really remember. But they made me laugh a lot…

In your childhood you seriously studied piano. Can you play anything now?
The piano is still in my room but it’s a long time since I went near it. I’ve already forgotten all the notes and anything I used to play. On the whole I wasn’t that drawn to music from the start. Because of that I really fell into tennis. My mom told me: choose- either piano or tennis. To me playing scales seemed very boring, so I chose to pick up the racquet.

During the recent Roland Garros you gained publicity for almost getting into a fight with French tennis player Rezai and her father. What happened?
Oh! I’d rather not remember… The guilty party in all this is the father, this crazy Iranian. I simply caught him at a bad moment. When we asked them to leave the practice court because their time was up, he began swinging his racquet about and clipped his own daughter with it. Then he accused me of attacking her. Well, there were also witnesses. Now, as far as I know, he is banned from going on the practice courts. I expect before long he will be banned from coming to tournaments.

I guess a good coach who is affordable and willing to travel is hard to come by.

There are several good ones out there; she shouldn't have too much trouble finding one. Just off the top of my head, I can think of Nigel Sears, Olga Morozova, Elena Brioukhovets, Dennis Ralston, Juan Avendano, and Carlos Kirmayr, although some of them may already be employed and I don't know about it.

Finding one who fits all three criteria (good, affordable, willing to travel) is a bit trickier. Some of these guys (and ladies) get $2000-$3000 a week.
