Wintermute
Mar 24th, 2006, 09:39 PM
I think they had played at least once when they were junior, I believe Peer def. Chakvetadze 76 62(or something like that) in AO junior.

Yeah, you're right! I just checked, it was the US Open Juniors 2003, second round. Anna did beat Sesil Karatantcheva 6-0 6-1 in the first round though. Two and half years is a long time so those results don't really mean too much.

Anna's biography on the ITF site says her favourite football team is (was) Milan. Not exactly the local team!

Anna Chakvetadze d. (31) Shahar Peer 6-1 6-2

 :yeah:

That's gotta be a pretty huge confidence booster. Judging by Shahar's seeding, it appears Anna now must face on of the top four seeds, most likely.

Davai Anna! :aparty:

Anna  Shame about the match against Nastya. I don't feel that Anna was really in the match. Perhaps nerves or tiredness but she threw in four double faults in the first set and was serving at about 40%. Her serve improved as the match went on. I guess Anna was having trouble putting pressure on Nastya's serve for the most part (Nastya won 70% of points on her 2nd serve) but at least she got a couple of breaks back.

:bigclap: Anna for a good tournament overall. As a mandatory tourny it's fantastic to get some good points here.

Anna plays no tournament currently - nobody talks about her :(

The problem is that because Anna is not as high profile as players in the Top 30 it is really difficult to get any info on what she's up to. When she doesn't play for the whole of April we don't know why. Maybe you're right and she's studying. It must be extremely difficult to read for a degree and play on the Tour at the same time.

I think Anna should get an official website so her fans can find out what she's doing. I know she very occasionally posts on wtatour.ru but she never says too much.

There was a thread on the GM in last couple of days asking who is the highest ranked player that WTAworld users had never seen play, either on TV or in the flesh. Anna was mentioned on a few people's lists. Even when she was doing well last summer and getting deep into tournys she was rarely on TV in the UK. I've probably only seen three or four of her matches. How about everyone else?

I asked Anna exactly this question in Luxembourg lat year.

Anna answered: It is important for her to study and she thinks, that she can manage the two jobs.

I think too, she should have a own site, cause she is a very interesting person. This is my personal point of view.

Anna was on tv in the US during RG. It was the match she lost. The way to get more publicity is to win those matches.
Linetskaya wrote poetry on her website.
Anna has sometimes made posts on Wtatour.ru. I don't think she wants to write an online diary.

You have to win matches. If Kirilenko had better results, she would be famous.
Same for Anna. You have to win matches. Especially at majors.

There seems like there used to be a bit of hype about her (I remember reading articles about her being a rising star, etc.), but that seems to have died down.

Is she still a rising star?

Of course she is! ;) Anna got a bit of hype because she beat Myskina (reigning French Open champion at the time) in 2nd round of US Open in 2004 after coming through qualifying. The media likes to latch onto the young players in the hope of discovering the next big thing and hyping them up. I think Ivanovic and Mirza have had way more hype.

I know she's still only 19, but looking at her results, they're not quite glowing. I hope she can have a great summer season and move up the rankings.

I think she's had pretty good results. In 2005 she beat a bunch of very good (and higher ranked) players including Jankovic, Golovin, Likhovtseva, Maleeva, Asagoe. She lost to Kuznetsova in a final set tie break at Eastbourne and Dementieva at the US Open ( :o ) and came close against Sharapova (they were both injured in that match). Anna hit a slump over the indoor season where she had minor injuries and split with her coach but she's coming back. Give her time, she's young. And I think she'll have an awesome summer season! :D

Why must we always only consider figures and rankings:
I guess Anna is not under the top 10, she hasn't won yet a wta tournament, she was last year number 24 in the world - currently not.
But I like that Anna is on the wta tour, she hasn't not only tennis in her brain, she is a student (ecology) in Moscow. Anna has a normal body, not distended with muscels.
I am pleased to see her at wta tournemnts and like it first of all, that she is winning matches. But consider Jelena Dokic, her fans were totally pleased to see her playing like Anna.
Does Anna continually have to prove to herself that she is one of the best tennis players?
I like her personality and not a faceless perfomance with good facts.

Thanks for the info. Wintermute!
Sometimes it seems the worst thing a young player can do is get a big win over a top player. People automatically begin to expect a lot from them when they haven't matured enough yet to play at a consistantly high level. It's a lot of pressure.

Mmm, interesting! En anglais:

Russian tennis players, Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Vesnina, 34th and 64th in the world respectively, are together in Krasnodar Krai preparing for a series of European tournaments. Chakvetadze spoke to the sports information agency All Sports.

"I've been in Sochi since Monday and Elena arrived a couple of days later," Anna said. "We have already agreed to train together whenever possible. After this I shall go home to Moscow for a few days, and then to Europe. I am entered for three successive tournaments: Warsaw, Berlin and Rome."

Anna also confirmed that she still didn't have a new coach lined up at present. "I have had a few different offers but have not decided on anything yet."

Sochi is sort of a Russian resort isn't it? Didn't Sharapova used to live there? Anyway, it's nice to get some solid information at last about Anna's plans. So she's playing three tournaments and then a week off before Roland Garros.

It's good that she and Elena can train together because I'm sure they'll have fun doing it. Anna doesn't seem to be in a hurry to get a new coach.

I have seen Anna-Lena Groenefeld last week live at Ettenheim against the USA, where she played not very good. I have thought Anna might be a good chance against her. Daniela has trouble with Nigel Sears, how did she cope with it, I don't know.
But I talk about Anna-Lena and Daniela, first there is Jelena Jankovic.
I think one day she will stop her black series, then she is so much better than she did play the last half year.
I think it will be no easy match for Anna. Anna's advantage she is intellectual more flexibel during a match than Jelena. I hope Anna knows it.

Daniela has trouble with Nigel Sears, how did she cope with it, I don't know.

All we know is that it was Daniela's decision to split with Nigel and she is giving a press conference in Warsaw to explain it. How she will play is anyone's guess. It's not her favorite surface.

But I talk about Anna-Lena and Daniela, first there is Jelena Jankovic. I think one day she will stop her black series, then she is so much better than she did play the last half year. Jelena is maybe suffering from the same problem Anna had a few months ago: a severe lack of confidence. Anna should be fresh and raring to go. If she gets an early break it could be very demoralising for Jelena.

By the way they are up second on the Centre Court tomorrow. The website has live scoring.

Lets see if practicing with Vesnina is good for their games,
or if they're just yakking with each other.

After a restrained beginning of Anna she had to come through some difficult moments.
But as Anna has managed them, Jelena was no longer a dangerous opponent for Anna.

Chakvetadze bt Jankovic 7-5 6-3

Anna was down a break in the first set but came back strongly. She broke early in the second and while there were a few break points against her she held it together to take it fairly comfortably in the end.

She served 3 aces and 4 DFs. The stats indicate that when Anna got her first serve in she really dominated the point but her second serve was getting picked off a bit too easily. She could work on that.

What do you think?
I hope Anna doesn't think a lot of Luxembourg, there she started her bad series. She should think of Gisela Dulko, who defeated Daniela Hantuchova last year in Berlin on clay. But it will be hard match, Daniela has showed today a good fight.

Well, Anya and Ula got pretty much annihilated in today's doubles but it was a hard task for them against the experienced pair. They did a very good job of qualifying for the main draw for an untested pairing. Hopefully it will be good experience for when Anya plays with Lena V in the future.

This means I might well get to watch another Anna match on TV! 'Bout time!

Let's have another image blast from the J&S Cup site. They have a really great gallery compared to most other tennis sites.

She probably was tired. That's the other part of this sport.
Quality of play, also a high level of fitness is needed.
Especially on clay.

:clap2: Just a quick message to say well done to Anna for a great tournament. I hope her clay season continues to go as well as it has this week.

From wtatour.com
Chakvetadze was contesting her second career Tour singles semifinal, having also reached the final four at another Tier II event in New Haven last summer.

"I hope to have a better result against her next time," said Chakvetadze about Kuznetsova. "I couldn't seem to do anything today, I couldn't find my rhythm. She just overpowered me."

Eurosport showed highlights of the match against Sveta. Why not live?! Anyway it was pretty clear that Svetlana Kuznetsova is the in-form player right now. I would expect her to win the final on Sunday and to be a big favourite for Roland Garros.

Anna obviously found it tough going as evidenced by the scoreline. The weight of Sveta's shots means that even if you reach the ball you need a lot of power to guide it the way you want it and Anna was outgunned. She tried a few different tactics but never looked like she was giving up. It's this determination that has got her so far.

I really think she could do with finding a new coach though. There's so many parts of her game that she could work on and improve with the right guidance. We've said on here for a while that she could work on her serve. The stats always highlight when this becomes a liability for her. It was particularly true here where she was reducing her margin of error and trying to avoid hitting to Sveta's forehand.

Sam Smith (former British #1 don't you know  ), commentating for Eurosport, said that she believed Anna had overachieved in this tournament and in her tennis career in general. She said she had seen Anna play as a junior and didn't believe she would even make it into the Top 200 on the Main Tour. Shows where a bit of determination and hard work will get you, eh Sam? On a nicer note she did say that if Anna was unseeded at a Grand Slam, none of the top players would want to be facing her in their first round.

I grouped together the last bunch of pics from the website. She looks quite bored in her press conference doesn't she?

She said she had seen Anna play as a junior and didn't believe she would even make it into the Top 200 on the Main Tour. Shows where a bit of determination and hard work will get you, eh Sam? On a nicer note she did say that if Anna was unseeded at a Grand Slam, none of the top players would want to be facing her in their first round.

I grouped together the last bunch of pics from the website. She looks quite bored in her press conference doesn't she?

I must say I find Sam Smith to be one of the more insightful commentators and she generally makes good points but obviously I have to disagree with her on this one. She was actually comparing Anna to herself at one point saying she had often been in that situation where she was taking a pummeling from the opposing player and not being able to do much about it. But Sam never made the Top 50 and her stay in the Top 100 was pretty short-lived. A hint of jealousy?... no, that's a bit far-fetched. :p

For what it's worth, Anna has already made more career earnings than Sam did and has a better career win-loss ratio. But I don't want to diss the home team too much. ;)

After her easy win Anna went to the court, where Elena Vesnina played against Kveta Peschke and unfortunately lost.
I saw sometimes Anna and Elena practising together. I think it is just the nicest double on tour.

Hmmm... where is everyone today?

Got home from work pretty late as usual and managed to catch most of Eurosport 2's edited highlights of the match. I thought Anna played very well with just a period towards the end of the first set and beginning of the second where her concentration lapsed.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/ceze/Berlin_Chakvetadzestats1.jpg

Anna broke twice in the first set but Amélie pegged her back each time. The stats show that Anna could do with getting more 1st serves in because her 2nd serves are much more vulnerable. A break is no good unless you can consolidate it.

I still stand by my comment that she could do with getting a proper coach. There are so many areas of her game where even small improvements could be the difference between winning and losing a match. Obviously her serves but also things like hitting overheads and getting more confidence at net.

The scoreline is a little deceptive. At one point when Anna was serving at 2-3 in the second set, both players had won 50 points each. Overall I think she played a very commendable match against the world no. 1. :D Even Sam Smith was being complimentary!

Rom's draw is not really ice for Anna, but with regard to Paris maybe a second round exist against Kim is not too bad, cause it is more gentle for Anna. The most important to see her with wins in Paris.

Does she play Istanbul really?

I agree with all you guys, this draw ain't too great. :p Morigami had straight sets wins over Cara Black and Meilen Tu in qualies. Anna should get past her and then there's Kim.

Pascal, I totally agree with you about an early exit possibly being a good thing. Anna is defending points from Istanbul and Roland Garros and needs to be fresh for those. Yes, Anna is on the entry list for Istanbul next week along with Davenport, Myskina and Groenefeld.

Goldenlox, do you know what the player representative actually does? Do they just take part in the draw or something?

The real goal is to win matches at majors, and get big paychecks.

Anna is defending points from a Quarter Final appearance in Istanbul and a Third Round at Roland Garros. She's had a good clay season but she needs to keep it going and equal or improve on these results.
