I was impressed with how Anna played in England.
I thought she was behind Kirilenko and Linetskaya.
But I now think Anna can be a regular member of the top 20, and maybe a YEC player now and then.

She is very close now. She made a huge forward move this year to get to #33.
She just has to keep working, keep her focus.

This article is good. I wanted to post it again -

Chakvetadze gains semis despite jitters
NEW HAVEN — Djambuli Chakvetadze sat in the corner of the Court 2 bleachers and showed the nerves of an anxious father.

He sat next to his daughter’s coach, Karl Alljuarin, and took long, deliberate drags off a cigarette.

Anna Chakvetadze was serving for her quarterfinal match against Jie Zheng and started to repeat some faulty steps that almost cost her the first set.

The daughter inherited her father’s nerves. She looked up at him, then the sky, took a deep breath and proceeded to hold serve to solidify her first WTA semifinal appearance with a 6-4, 6-4 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament victory over Zheng on Thursday at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

She advances to face Lindsay Davenport today on Stadium Court.

"I was nervous. I know it showed," Chakvetadze said. "I’ve never been in this position before. When you play tennis in Russia, there is this certain intensity. There is emotion. And then there are nerves."

The nerves weren’t just a product of Chakvetadze’s match with Zheng. It has been that type of season for the 18-year-old Moscow product. Chakvetadze started the year without a coach, and then she found Alljuarin, who has been working with her for the past five months.

But the nerves stem from youth, and ambition from her heritage. Chakvetadze said she understands the pressure of being a female Russian tennis player. Everyone expects to become the top player. Few achieve that lofty distinction.

"It’s very much like America," Chakvetadze said. "That’s why tournaments are never easy. That’s why tennis is not easy."

Chakvetadze coasted through the first set and broke Zheng’s serve three times to take a 5-1 lead. Zheng then ripped off three straight games. Chakvetadze had trouble with her serve, double-faulting twice on set point at 5-3 to force deuce. Zheng held serve, then pushed Chakvetadze again before the Russian laced a baseline forehand for the first set.

As Chakvetadze finally settled down, Zheng unraveled late in the second set. Down 4-3, a series of unforced errors allowed Chakvetadze to run away with the final three games to secure a semifinal appearance.

She said she doesn’t want to think about the success of other Russian tennis players. Chakvetadze only cares about her performance, her possible jump up the rankings and, with stoic sincerity, added, "you never know what will happen. You only have to concern yourself with you."

After the win, Chakvetadze didn’t smile. She walked off the court and kissed her father on each cheek.

Then they exhaled.

Anna has very little to defend before the French Open.
In 2005, she lost in the Sydney qualies and round 2 of the AO.
No reason why Anna can't get her ranking into the 20's in Australia.

I agree,Anna is 32th this week (since Mirza lost 2 places coz she didn't defend the points she gained last year in a challenger) so she should be seeded at the OZ Open.I definitly think she can do something nice there and reach the top 20:yeah: :bigclap:
Sydney will be her 1st tournament in 2006.Good luck Anna!

That's cool, didn't notice that. :D Molik will fall below her pretty soon as well so Anna's kinda in 31st already. Not adjusted for bonus point removal of course.

Yes, Anna is on the confirmation list for Sydney in a very strong field:

Player list (https://www.clubsonline.com.au/club/customcategory/attachments/Official%20WTA%20Womens%20List%20-%20Sydney%202006.pdf)

She doesn't seem to be down for Gold Coast or Auckland so I guess her year starts in Sydney, week of January 8th.

Kuznetsova - Asagoe
Groenefeld - Safina
Peng - Ivanovic

A tough field. I don't necessarily think that playing a qualifier in the first round is the best introduction to a new season. They will already have had three matches played before this first round. But we'll have to wait and see who it is.

Also, in the new rankings which exclude bonus points I believe Chaky will drop a few places. This puts her outside the Top 32 and since the Aussie Open seedings are taken from Monday's rankings this means she won't be seeded. Anna will already know about this because the WTA have been providing the new-style rankings to the players for a while now.

goldenlox

There is no easy section in this draw.
Schiavone can be excellent at times.
But it's good to have Anna back on the court.

goldenlox

Anna could have played some ITF events last November or December to add points.
Not being seeded could be a big deal. We have to wait for the AO main draw.

Wintermute
Jan 7th, 2006, 09:59 PM
I'm sure Anya must have considered the situation regarding seeding as she would have known that she would drop ranking places without the bonus points. She could have played an event this last week but didn't. Perhaps she felt there was too much ground to make up in a short space of time and it was better to make a later start.

On another note, I see Anya posted a message on her Russian messageboard on New Year's Day.

Spasibo vsem bolshoe.
S novim godom! :)
Udachi i ispolneniya vseh jelaniy!

I don't speak Russian so I only get the first two lines: "Thanks to everyone. Happy New Year!" The last line I'm not sure on.

Zi Yan won her three qualifying matches in straight sets. First match back and I'm nervous. You never know what will happen with a qualifier and this being Anna's season opener. Best of luck Anna!

As expected Anna's new ranking is 36. With Molik out (and is Conchita out too?), Anna needs two or three more people to pull out to grab a seeded position at the Aussie Open.

I told you I had a bad feeling about playing a qualifier. :o In fact, just checking the draw now it looks like all four qualifiers won their first round matches - so definitely not an advantage to play one.

Well, it's not exactly the best preparation for the Aussie Open. Perhaps she should have played Auckland last week? On the positive side she only did as well as Martina Hingis which is not a bad player to be compared to!

Pascal - thanks for your many photos over the break. The coach you mention is Rikard Allgurin. I hadn't heard anything about her firing him. She only started working with him in July last year and he got her up to her highest ranking. Why would she stop a good thing?

You make a good point. Anna's recent poor run of form and the fact she hasn't actually played that much in the last few months means she's kinda fallen under the radar. There's no weight of expectation on her apart from what she puts on herself. I hope this will give her the freedom to go out there and give it her best without the nerves that did her in against Elena D at Flushing.

Anna's first set against Jie Zheng
Good start from Anna - my interpretation is based on the livescore
first game Anna leads 30-0 and has a break-ball, but Zheng 1-0
1-1 Anna to 0
1-2 Anna breaks Zheng and you think, now she gets self-confident and woould mange the match
but what happens with her advantage, Anna starts dreaming? and lost her service to 0
2-2
3-2
4-2 Zheng
now Anna comes back with no luck in the end
she dence four 4 set-balls - strong and gets her first game ball, can't use and three points in row for Zheng
7-5 Zheng wins the first - I think absolutely not necessary

:bounce: :woohoo: Yeah! Anna finally won a match! It seems like such a long time but it came at the right time. She has successfully defended her points from last year.

I was pretty much expected her to lose the first set. She's had such little competitive match practice in recent weeks/months and Zheng is a tough player that this was almost inevitable. But once she got into her stride the second and third sets seem to have been quite comfortable.

The stats don't look too bad. Anya hit twice as many winners as Zheng and the same number of errors (she could do with reducing those a bit). Net play seems a bit hit and miss but at least she was using that part of her game.

She'll need to step it up another level against Nicole. I would LOVE to see Anna win that match but it's going to be really tough based on current form and ranking. As long as it's a decent contest then I'll be pleased.

It wasn't all good for Nicole though as Dani and Ai dumped her and Strycova out of the women's doubles in the first round. (...sort of revenge from my perspective. )

Oh well, Aussie Open 2006 has been fairly forgettable for Chaky fans. In fact it's pretty tough being an Anna fan right now. There is the small consolation that she defended her singles points from last year but again her draw was not too kind.

Can you believe her best buddy and doubles partner, Elena Vesnina, is into the Round of 16? It's fair to say she had a kinder draw than Anna but obviously she's been playing well too.

Here's a match report -

Chakvetadze def Zheng

This match was very high quality, with both players playing quite well. Anna was hitting hard, accurate groundstrokes, moving Jie around from side to side, and Jie did some brilliant counterpunching, hitting hard on her backhand. I saw the 3rd set and Anna was up 3-1, then Jie fought back to go ahead 4-3, then Anna won the next 3 games to win 6-4. Anna was hitting a lot of winners at the end, and bending over and clenching her fist like Serena does. This match reminded me of the one Jie lost at the AO last year, finishing late, at about 8.30pm, and a high quality close match which Jie lost.

It's indeed a very difficult draw for Anna because Dinara is the defending champion and she must be very motivated :scared: Nevertheless,Dinara can be unconsistent and Anna has nothing to lose so she may surprise her as Ardvisson did in Australia. 3rd tourny of the year: Open Gaz de France - Paris, France
Week of 6th Feb 2006
Surface: Hard, Greenset
Tier II $600,000

Here's the full draw:

MAURESMO, Amelie (1) - BYE
Q / LL - DUSHEVINA, Vera
RAZZANO, Virginie - PESCHKE, Kveta
CHAKVETADZE, Anna - SAFINA, Dinara (7)

PETROVA, Nadia (3) - BYE
SMASHNOVA, Anna - Q / LL
GOLOVIN, Tatiana - DOMACHOWSKA, Marta
MIRZA, Sania - PENNETTA, Flavia (6)

DEMENTIEVA, Elena (5) - Q / LL
BARTOLI, Marion - DECHY, Nathalie
SAFAROVA, Lucie - Q / LL
BYE - SCHNYDER, Patty (4)

GROENEFELD, Anna-Lena (8) - FORETZ, Stephanie
VINCI, Roberta - LOIT, Emilie
MEDINA GARRIGUES, Anabel - Q / LL
BYE - PIERCE, Mary (2)

Hmmm, Anna really needs to get her ranking up so she's seeded again. Her draws have sucked so badly recently I'm starting to think she's really unlucky! She opens against the defending champion and shares her quarter with the top seed, last year's runner up and newly crowned Aussie Open champ.

If she can get through the first round the second seems a lot easier. At least she's not opening against a qualifier because for someone with as little competitive play as Anna has had so far this year I don't see that as an advantage.

Last year Anna lost to Cara Black in the second round of qualifying so she's barely defending any points. The important thing I think is more match play to build confidence.

No Vesnina here, so no doubles. Anna's not entered with Mirza either. Sania is playing with Liezel Huber.

There is no easy section here. Anna has to come out focused.
These tournaments are where you get battle tested.
Then you need to win at the majors when you get a decent draw.

Here's Monday's order of play from the scoring thread:

Court Central

Start 12h00

Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) vs Pauline Parmentier (FRA)
Camille Pin (FRA) vs Ivana Lisjak (CRO)
Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) vs Severine Bremond (FRA)

Not before 17h00

Anna Lena-Groenefeld (GER) vs Stephanie Foretz (FRA)
Roberta Vinci (ITA) vs Emilie Loit (FRA)
Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) vs Dinara Safina (RUS)

Last match means I can hopefully follow some live scores in the scoring thread. The website doesn't appear to have a scoreboard. And to all the conflicted Russian supporters, get behind Chaky on this one - she needs a good result more than Dinara. :)

The stats make sobering reading. This was pretty atrocious.

http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/3628/chakydinaogfparis06stats8hu.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Look at the difference in total points won; points won on 1st serve less than 50%; second serve - both were bad, Anna's was worse.

TBE may be right. Anna should have probably played Pattaya this week and got some competitive match practice against lower ranked opponents. She wasn't defending many points here and yet now she's managed to lose some.

It makes you wonder what's going on behind the scenes. Anna had a major breakthrough onto the Tour last year and she's now well into her sophomore slump with no sign of a recovery.

These indoor Tier II's are tough. But if Anna wants to make a living at this sport, she has be able to compete at the level Dinara plays at.

They played a close match in Moscow.
There are better players out there than Dinara.
Anna should not be getting blown out.

Good question. I've had a look around entry lists at a few tournament sites and can't find any mention of Anna until Indian Wells starting March 6th.

She seems to have a very bare schedule right now, which may be a good thing or a bad thing given recent form. She's not defending her points at Antwerp for example.

Hmmm. :( That was the only tourny I was unsure of when I was checking around as the website doesn't have a detailed entry list. I assumed that as Anna wasn't playing Doha then Dubai would be out also. Indian Wells is the next confirmed tourny as far as I can work out.

Bit concerned about Anna's poor results recently plus the fact she is barely playing any tournaments. What's going on?

On the positive side, Anna has moved up a place to #33 this week. It's possible she'll drop next week when Antwerp points have come off.

Hi,wintermute and TheBoiledEgg!
It's too bad.
What's happening with Anya?
Yeah she had suffered with latest tournaments with lost to strong opponents,
but it's just because of bad luck with draw...
So,what a hell she doing???
I hope it was not serious problem kinda injury or illness.
If she's good with her health, she can get back soon to her place,
where she was before.
Masha Kirilenko was in a similar(maybe even worse) position just a year ago,
in this time of the year, and then she couldn't get through to up her ranking,
but she's now going into top 20.
So, let's hope for good return of Anya!

Anna is at a point of her career where she can't show up at a Tier II and beat a player like Dinara.
Anna has the game to make a great living, but this tour is very competitive.
She has to show up willing to focus and compete for 2 hours.
If she doesn't, she has no chance against the top 20 players.

So, let's hope for good return of Anya!

Look at what Kirilenko did at the end of 2005 compared to Anna. She chose to go on the Asian circuit of lower tier tournys (along with Vaidisova) and managed to pick up a title. Anna chose to play the higher tier European tournaments and barely won a match. At this point in time it looks like a mistake but Anna was so competitive with the top players during the summer (and reached her highest ranking) that it seemed reasonable to continue to test herself against the best.

I don't think her current problems are injury related. Seems more psychological and I wonder what is going on behind the scenes that may be distracting her so much.

I think Anna is a player, who plays very intelligent. She knows exactly, what she does on court. She thinks about her next stroke, but for this way of playing you need much self-confidence. The pleasure of celebrating her thought-out playing has gone for the moment.

This is a good quarter of the draw to be in, I think. However I am worried by the prospect of Anna's first match.

Vesnina has really come on in the last couple of months and is one of Anya's best friends on the Tour. That will add an extra dimension if they play. On the other hand, Kutuzova caused so many problems for her in the first round at the US Open last year. Anna scraped through that one winning 7-5 in the third.

I'm just praying that she wins a round or three. That'll get the confidence back. She's had a good bit of time off and now needs to put all her willpower and determination into getting some good results.

I hope Anna shows them all, that she has not forget how to play tennis.

It is very fine to see Anna win again.
She starts very well - 5-1 and then she takes a break, she was probably a bit scared of her good perfomance - 5-2 5-3 5-4 0-40, but it was great, how she managed this situation.
Maria Kirilenko is currently a very strong opponent for Anna, but Anna won her last match. Maria is the favorite and Anna has nothing to lose and she knwos, that she can beat Maria Kirilenko. First of all a match with two pretty players like Anna vs Vika too

Good result and was really needed. A few lapses of concentration perhaps. She let a big lead in the first set slip but came back from 0-40 down on her serve to take the set. Anna broke at just the right time in the second to take the match.

Is Anna back on track? Only time will tell. But it had to be very sweet for her to whip her Moscow friend and rival Maria Kirilenko in straight sets. Maybe Anna is sending a message to Adidas with this easy win over Masha that Anna should be promoted more by Adidas in the future. ;) Masha is getting alot of push from Adidas this year and I doubt that please Anna who also wears Adidas and who is also an attractive girl.

Great to see Anna getting results. :D Think her slump was the result of playing alot in her first full season. Played with injuries still managed to win matches. Went pretty far in the US-Summer Circuit. Unfortunately during the indoor she ran out of steam or played with an injury. Let's hope Anna can avoid the Qual for the rest of the season. Good luck vs. Ana, she can cope with hardhitting. Her footwork and retrieving's excellent. No way she's chanceless vs. Ana.

Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) vs. Virginie Razzano (FRA)
Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) vs. Karolina Sprem (CRO)
Bye vs. Shahar Peer (ISR) [31]

Jelena Jankovic (SCG) [25] vs. Bye
Qualifier vs. Emma Laine (FIN)
Akiko Morigami (JPN) vs. Na Li (CHN)

I'll be interested to see how Anna does against Sprem. She is a player who runs hot and cold and it's hard to know which Karolina will turn up. Anna beat her in Antwerp in straight sets at the start of last year so she has something positive to bring to the match.

When Anna plays Karolina, a 0-5 seems to be standard, compare with Antwerp Anna led 5-0 in the first set. In the first set Anna was maybe still fascinated from her colourful clothes (does nowhere exist a photo to see the whole Anna with her dress?) then on the court she wasn't. Anna had like the match against Ana Ivanovic many problems, when she served. She played better, when Karolina had service. She fights, that's really good. Even if Karolina probably contributed a bit to Anna's win - the result is good. And Anna might be keen of playing on higher level soon.

A few too many breaks of serve for comfort. The stats suggest Anna served a bit better than Karolina and she had more break point opportunities. Lots of BPs against her though. Anna still needs to serve a bit better in the next round, be a bit more dominant on her own service games.

So she plays Shahar Peer next. Don't think they've played before so who knows how it'll go?

I have spoken in Luxemburg a while with her coach Rick, a very kind person from Sweden, after Anna had defeated Magdalena Maleeva. She worked together well with him the summer 2005. He said to me: See you in Filderstadt, but he wasn't there with Anna.
It seems that Anna has him fired. Did somebody know more. Why?
Since this date she is out of order on court.

I just noticed on Anna's profile on wtatour.com that it now says she is currently without a coach. I remember when Pascal posted this a couple of months ago saying that I hadn't heard anything about her parting with Rikard Algurin but I guess it's true. Her father is probably coaching her.

I wonder what happened - I thought Algurin was good, he was coaching Anna through her great summer season. I can only imagine the split affected her confidence on court and she's only just regaining that now.

Anyway, didn't want to look too far ahead but I noticed Anna's draw has really opened up now Venus has withdrawn. Let's see if she can take advantage.
