Out of the Women's Doubles already.

Dementieva/Pennetta (14) def. Chakvetadze/Golovin 6-3 6-2

They were always going to be a tough team to beat. But hey, they each get $5,000 for turning up so it's not all bad.

Schedule for tomorrow:

Court 7 11.00 AM Start

1. Women's Singles - 2nd Rnd.
Jelena Jankovic (SCG)[17] vs. Alexa Glatch (USA)

followed by
2. Women's Singles - 2nd Rnd.
Jill Craybas (USA) vs. Anna Chakvetadze (RUS)[29]

3. Men's Singles - 2nd Rnd.
Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) vs. Mariano Puerta (ARG)[10]

4. Men's Doubles - 1st Rnd.
Brian Baker (USA)/Rajeev Ram (USA) vs. Scoville Jenkins (USA)/Bobby Reynolds (USA)

I saw Craybas at Wimbledon beat Serena in that bizarre match and then get pummelled by Venus. If Anna plays to her ability then she should win, but the crowd will probably be on Craybas's side. (Once again not televised in UK. )

Anna d. Jill Craybas 6-0 6-2

Very impressive :D

Anna crushed Jill. There was only the possible concentration lapse by Anna serving at 4-1 in the second where Craybas broke. Anna broke straight back and served it out. :woohoo:

So if Lena D wins today there is a tantalizing third round encounter in prospect. :D

Well done Anna. She's really coming into her own. I think she has a realistic chance to upset Dementieva in the third round. Especially if she serves well. But Elena is the better tennis player at this point in their respective careers and should be the favorite.

She looks very young...She shouldn't be too upset about this loss, she nearly had it,with a little more experience she will be winning them...I really can see a bright future for her.

Anna is 18 :D (she was born in March 1987 :) )
This match showed how much she improved this year:bounce: :bounce: : at the Oz open Elena beat her in 2 easy sets and now, Anna almost defeated her :D She just needed a lil bit more experience to defeat a very motivated Dementieva.(I agree 100% with Safin, Elena is one of the best fighter of the tour if not the best , plus she had to defend her points so it's not shameful AT ALL to lose to her.) Next time, I 'm sure Anya will beat her ;) Anna is becoming a very dangerous player and a real threat for the top 20 :D :bounce: :bounce: and I think that although she lost, she can be proud of her match :D I can see easily Chaky in QF of a grand slam tournament next year :bounce: :bounce:

Tell me if I've got this wrong but...

Anna had 1101 ranking points and was defending 234. For reaching the 3rd round she gets 56 + 16 + 4 = 76 points (for defeating Kutuzova and Craybas).

That means her new points total is 943 which, if everyone else stayed the same, would put her in 33rd place in the rankings. That's not too big a drop. (Actually, I think Sugiyama and Asagoe may fall below Anna so she could be a couple of places higher than that.)

Anna's done well on the summer hardcourts to consolidate her position. :D

Thanks, I didn't see that thread. Hey, that means I was right. (I did say a couple of places higher than 33.) :)

Not seen any interview with Anna after the match but have the following from the San Diego Union Tribune:

No woman had a more challenging experience than No. 6 seed Elena Dementieva. Her opponent, her 18-year-old Russian countrywoman Anna Chakvetadze, began to weep in the final stages of a match that went to Dementieva 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

When Chakvetadze was questioned later concerning her tears, she again began to break up. She said she was nervous beginning the match because she was considering all the ranking points she had to defend.

And this is what Elena said in her post-match interview (full transcript here (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/interviews/2005-09-03/200509031125774788586.html)):

Q. Near the end of that match, Anna appeared to be near tears. She seemed to be very emotional. When you become aware that one of your opponents is experiencing that kind of feelings, how do you react? Do you take encouragement from that, or do you have sympathy for her? How do you react when you see that tennis is causing her to almost break down on the court?

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: You know, I think it was pretty close match and it was very emotional for both of us. Uhm, you know, I think she's just, you know, little bit younger than me. Maybe she doesn't have so much experience as I do. I mean, I have so many ‑‑ had so many matches, you know, by winning 7‑6 in the third, so I know how it feels to be, you know, that close and, you know, when one point can decide, you know, the whole match that we play for almost three hours.

I think, yeah, I think it was very emotional for both of us. I think she's a very good player, and maybe she needs a little bit more experience.

This is what Myskina said after her loss to Likhovtseva -

"I played aggressive but then I started missing the balls I need to win," said Myskina who led 5-2 in the third, her eyes red from crying after the match. "But no one died, it is OK."

Everyone loses close matches. You have to move on, and keep improving.

Lena has an amazing mental resolve that can get her through tough situations such as third set tie-breakers. I think they said on TV yesterday that she's won her last six of these.

Anna needs more big match experience to get her through a situation like that.

However, I watched Elena's match against Schnyder and Patty was making so many errors I'm sure Anna could have beaten her. Davenport, hmmm... don't know about that one.

Q. She served for the match at 6‑5 in the third set. When you were able to take the match into a tiebreaker, do you feel then that your experience would be important in the tiebreaker?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, I think we both, you know ‑‑ it's not our favorite shot, you know, to serve. So we didn't have any problems to break each other during the match. It was more about, you know, the rally on the court, baseline ground strokes. Yeah, I mean, I think it was very, very important moment, you know, when I could, you know, win this game, make it 6‑All. I felt little bit, you know, more calm on the tiebreak.

US OPEN (Flushing Meadows, New York, USA, Decoturf, Grand Slam)
=======

This is Anna Chakvetadze, member of my casual demi-fanship, possibly even a candidate for future induction into my eternal fanship:

The cutest player along with Maria Kirilenko, I have a huge soft spot for Anna, which has been growing like topsy in recent weeks. I can't say I admire her tennis, except insofar as she looks so cute when she's serving, with that little blow she does, and the way her eyes bulge when she's running for a dropshot. But she has evidently improved since I saw her play at the French Open and Birmingham.

-----------
First round
-----------

+ ANNA CHAKVETADZE [29] d. Viktoriya Kutuzova [Q], 6-3 3-6 7-5

No sooner had Tatiana Golovin sealed her victory on a third-set tiebreak, than I had to transfer my worries to Anna, who was following in Tatiana's footsteps by dropping the second set and going a break down (0-1) in the third!

I didn't expect Anna to be in trouble against Viktoriya Kutuzova, who turned 17 on 19th August. Anna has had a terrific US hardcourt summer (qf San Diego; a near miss against Maria Sharapova (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) in 3r Los Angeles; sf New Haven).

But when a sequence of breaks left Anna 3-5 down in the third, she seemed to be heading for the most disappointing loss of her career so far - given her recent form, and a draw which could well see her reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final if she can get past Dementieva in 3r and Schnyder in 4r.

Anna serving to stay in the match at 3-5: 40/0, 40/15, held.
Kutuzova serving for the match at 5-4: 0/30 -> 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad A (BP #2), broken.
Anna serving 5-5: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad A, held.
Kutuzova serving to stay in the match at 5-6: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 MPs), 30/40, Anna won 6-3 3-6 7-5.

I was so happy when Anna won - that both she and Tatiana won after both had stared defeat in the face. It shows that I have a passion for Anna and Tatiana not normally associated with players outside my eternal fanship.

Second round

Third round

Second Set
----------
CHAKVETADZ __*@*__@*@ 6
DEMENTIEVA @*___*@___ 4

"Chakvetadze seemed to take control of the errors that plagued her in the first set, hitting winners down the lines that she could not do in the first. The match became more of a contest, though, as the two traded powerful groundstrokes in several long rallies, grunting and shrieking on every shot." [www.usopen.org (http://www.usopen.org)]

Dementieva serving 4-3: 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Anna serving 4-4: held to love.
Dementieva serving to stay in the second set at 4-5: 0/40 (3 SPs), 15/40, Anna won the second set 6-4.

Third Set
---------
CHAKVETADZ *@*___* * *_ 6(5)
DEMENTIEVA ___*@* * * * 7(7)

Dementieva serving 0-1: 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

Anna serving 3-1: 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.

Anna serving 3-3: 30/15 -> 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad A, held.
Dementieva serving 3-4: 15/0, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad D, Deuce #2, ad D, Deuce #3, ad D, held.

If Anna goes on to lose this match, I think that's the game she will look back on.

Anna serving 4-4: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad A, held.
Dementieva serving to stay in the match at 4-5: 40/0, 40/15, held.
Anna serving 5-5: held to love.
Dementieva serving to stay in the match at 5-6: 0/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
6-6 tiebreak: Anna 1/0*, 1/1*, *3/1, 3/2*, 4/2* -> 4/5*, 5/5*, *5/6 (MP), Dementieva won 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7/5).

3-0 in the third set, Dementieva serving 3-4 15/40, a 4/2 lead in the tiebreak... I hope this isn't going to earn Anna the nickname Chokevetadze! ;)

I saw Anna on the IBM NetCam apparently crying, and according to those who saw the match, she was in tears (or at least close to tears) during the tiebreak! But - like Vera Zvonarëva (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/zvona/) - Anna fights to the bitter end.

Anna was cruelly denied victory, and even Dementieva - who served 19 double faults - admitted: "I think she really play very good match and she deserved to win this one. I was a little bit lucky in the tiebreak."

We're going to see a lot more of Anna in the future, I think.

Anna was, unfortunately, very close to tears during that tiebreak against Elena and was crying by the time she shook hands.

She said the reason she fell apart was that she was nervous about defending all those points. If it weren't for that, she may well have won. I hope to see her get a few decent wins under her belt in the indoor season and ensure she doesn't pick up that nickname you mention. :tape:

Saw the following snippet in an interview Anna gave to Russian newspaper Izvestia (http://www.izvestia.ru/sport/article2559958) 23 August 2005.

(Sincere apologies if my translation is poor but I don't speak Russian.)

Izvestia: Many of those around you call you "Chucky" [Chaky]. But in fact "Chucky" is the name of the monster doll from the well-known American film series. This comparison doesn't bother you?

Chakvetadze: It has nothing to do with the doll. It's simply a shortening of my surname. The nickname has stuck with me since school.

What a bizarre question to ask someone! :silly: At least they come up with an original question. I can't quite tell from Anna's response whether she was taking this seriously or not. :)

In the interview she is also asked about her goals in tennis and for her thoughts on Maria Sharapova.

известия:Грядет US Open.

for those who speak dutch, this is what happened in the tie-break:

There's a really interesting interview with Anna Chakvetadze (and a nice photo that I've seen before on the Internet) on p.82 of the October 2005 issue of ACE Tennis Magazine.

It tells me a number of things I didn't already know about Anna: notably that she's studying for a degree in ecology from Moscow University! "Because of my special situation I am allowed to take six years to do my degree instead of five."

Nice one, Andrew. I'll have to pick that one up.

It does say on her profile on the WTA website that she's at Moscow University but it doesn't say what she is studying. If she manages to work towards an ecology degree and play professional tennis at the same time, count me very impressed! Perhaps when she retires from tennis she can go and save the world from environmental disaster. :D

Here's that interview from ACE Tennis magazine October issue:

Student of the game

Young Russian player Anna Chakvetadze tells Dominic Bliss how she juggles the demands of the WTA Tour with studying for a degree and playing the odd game of soccer.

There are so many successful Russian female players. Do you ever wish you were from another country so you could earn more money and achieve greater fame?
I couldn’t ever imagine playing for another country. I love playing for Russia. Yes, there are many good Russian girls but that makes me want to be the best in my country. It increases the competition among us.

Where do you train in Moscow?
At the Valere club. Elena Bovina, Anastasia Myskina, Mikhail Youzhny and occasionally Marat Safin train there too. I normally hit with my sparring partner – a boy who trains there.

You are currently a student at Moscow University. How is that going?
Whenever I’m in Moscow I go into the university. I’m studying ecology. But it’s very difficult to study when I travel so much. I always take lots of books with me when I’m on the Tour. Because of my special situation I am allowed to take six years to do my degree instead of five.

You travel with your father Djambuli. Is it difficult being with him all the time?
No, he helps me very much. Anyway, I have to travel with him because he is my coach. I understand that I have to train hard if I want to win. I can’t imagine not travelling with him.

Does he let you go out when you want to?
Only if I have already lost in the tournament. I go out a lot with Sania Mirza from India. She is my friend and doubles partner.

If you hadn’t been a professional tennis player what would you have done?
I had different dream jobs at different ages. When I was seven I wanted to be a pop singer. Then tennis took over.

If there was one thing in tennis you could change, what would it be?
I’d like to see more prize money. It’s OK at the moment but if it was increased I wouldn’t complain.

What irritates you the most about your job?
You never get the chance to spend a lot of time at home. Every week you take a flight and you change hotels. I think some players wake up in the morning and they don’t know which city they are in.

What car do you drive?
I don’t drive yet. In Russia you have to be 18 before you can drive. I was 18 earlier this year and I wanted to start learning a few weeks ago when I was in Moscow. But I had no time. My mum was going to teach me. Maybe when I go back after the US Open I will try.

Favourite music, films and books?
Music: I like a little bit of everything. I travel with my iPod and it has a whole mixture of stuff on it. With films it all depends on the actors. I like Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt. For books, I love Russian detective stories.

What other sports are you into?
I like to play soccer with my dad and my brother. My dad was a professional soccer player for a Georgian team when Georgia was part of the USSR. My dad is Georgian and my mother is Ukrainian. I love playing and watching soccer. We have a tennis court at home and sometimes we take the net down and play five-a-side soccer. I just do it for fun so I don’t risk getting injured.

Anya should go to Japan :awww:

It looked like Anna was a last-minute entry to Filderstadt. This is the strongest field outside of a Grand Slam this year and Anna is the lowest ranked direct entrant in the Main Draw (although she was ranked 24 a month ago).

She was probably holding out before confirming to Filderstadt to see how she did in Luxembourg. And as has been pointed out, geographically it's a lot easier.

Also her prize money for a first round appearance is better than Japan.

Anna is a much better player than her recent results show. And it has to hurt her so much to lose a tough match to Schnyder in her hometown. :( I am most concerned about her emotional state as she seems to crumble in matches and loses matches she shouldn't. I hope she doesn't turn into another Vera Zvonareva mentally.

Wintermute

Poor Anna.

Her indoor season has been disappointing. Again she was very close, racing away with the first set. You just knew Patty wouldn't take that lying down and was able to come back in the second. They swapped breaks in the middle of the third and were level pegging until the end. Unfortunately, Anna was serving second in the final set and she has seemed susceptible at crunch times so it was going to be tricky always playing catch-up.

She went down 0-40 in her final service game, possibly thinking of the prospect of another final set tie-breaker against a top ten player, and that sealed the deal.

The draws haven't been especially kind to Anna so far in these European events. Maria Kirilenko and Nicole Vaidisova chose to go on the lower tier Asian swing and each picked up tournament wins; Anna went for the more dangerous ploy of putting herself up against the big guns in these higher tiers, presumably for the more useful match experience and hoping to get some decent wins. She needs another big win against a top player to restore her confidence and send her up the rankings again and she was agonisingly close here.

But hey, there will always be another tournament and there are far worse things in the world right now than the loss of one tennis match.

Yes! Exactly the point I was trying to make yesterday but put more succintly! (I was on a bit of a downer yesterday so that probably explains it.)

Anna will have had great match experience playing these top players rather than wasting her time playing people she should be beating anyway. Taking Schnyder to three tight sets is a good achievement. Match stats are here (http://www.kremlincup.ru/on-court/draws/match_statistics_eng_15_20_1_8.shtml). It looks like they may have been a little harsh judging the unforced errors. 63 for Anna! Can that be right?

Also the doubles was today...

Raymond/Stosur bt. Chakvetadze/Vesnina 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2

I wasn't expecting much from this match so I was really pleased to see Anna and Elena take the number 2 seeds to three sets. They made a great comeback in the second set. Lots of breaks against server. Match stats are here (http://www.kremlincup.ru/on-court/draws/match_statistics_eng_15_21_1_8.shtml). Good effort girls! :D

Oh my god! How does Anna keep coming up against the same players. Is this Maggie's last ever tournament? It'll take on extra importance for her not to go out in round one if it is, and considering she went to three sets against Anna at Luxembourg she'll fancy her chances. But she's not the player she once was and Anna should get the job done again.

In second round a potential match against Schnyder who beat her in three this week. Hopefully some revenge!

Ditto what everyone else said. Bad scoreline. Don't look at the stats - not good. :o

Maggie had extra reason to get somewhere in this tournament. You don't want to lose in the first round of your last ever event to a teenager. I'm sure she was trying her hardest to win this time after two three set losses this year.

Or maybe Anna felt sorry for her and let her win. ;) OK, that was a joke. But it might be right that Anna is tired now at the end of the season. However, her indoor season has been a real non-starter; it's a shame she couldn't carry on the momentum from the summer hardcourts. On the bright side she won't be defending too many points at this time next year. :p

I think Anna will do better at Belgium next week (providing she doesn't suffer some extremely poor luck and draw Kim Clijsters in the first round :scared: ).

I hope she doesn't turn into another Vera Zvonareva mentally.

Anna could do a lot worse than to emulate Bepa. I believe Bepa's emotions are a positive force for her. Bepa always fights to the bitter end. Anna is a great fighter too.

She was only just 15! Teenage girls will grow pretty quickly in a short space of time. Just ask Sharapova - she gained another inch or two this year, didn't she?

Anna was just a skinny kid in 2002. She's obviously grown and worked on getting a more athletic body since then so she can get stuck into those hard rallies with the big guns on tour.

Thanks Goldy. This photo is actually on Gettyimages as well but slightly larger and with fewer logos. Go to the editorial section and search for the following code: 52037602

Do you think Anna will have a mental block to overcome the next time she plays Dementieva? I really hope she makes a good start to the new season. She's currently ranked 33. I guess she might move one or two places if bonus points come straight off but she needs some early success to ensure seeding at the Aussie Open.
