Of course i am disappointed in the result, but i have to take my hat off to Morigami... you were very good today and when the match was there to be won you were by far the better player.

Anna needs to take this as a big lesson, she also needs to work on her first serve. So learn from your loss, get out on the practise court and practise serving girl, because the rest of your game is going along very nicely.

Well done Morigami...

Although Anna lost, she has the right mentality.
You have to compete for the whole match, even if you're not healthy.

She's getting there. She's got a good future.

Kirilenko plays more like Hingis. Chakvetadze has good groundstrokes and a good serve, but her 2nd serve can is a weakness. She's a baseliner and she can come in if she wants. She fights until the last point. Very emotional player.

That is a very respectable scoreline against a player of Sharapova's stature. Anna has really made a name for herself during this US season.

I notice in the post-match reports I've read that a lot is being made of Sharapova's injury as a reason why she under-performed but no mention is made of Anna's injury during the match.

Does anyone know exactly at what point Anna got injured? Although I wasn't able to follow the match, the WTA site says Anna was a break up in the third so possibly after this?

Hopefully it's not serious and won't hamper her in the next few weeks.

goldenlox
Aug 12th, 2005, 05:39 PM
Chakvetadze, a fast-improving 18-year-old with a solid all-around game, was hurt much worse by a pulled left groin that she suffered in the second set and then had tightly wrapped halfway through the third set.

She led the third set, 2-0, before her injury grew worse and she had to call timeout for a trainer to wrap her leg with a 3-2 lead. From there, Sharapova took the lead, 4-3 and Chakvetadze burst into tears out of frustration.

Unable to move well, she nevertheless went for broke on her shots and stayed in the match. Sharapova held serve to take a 6-5 lead and then she broke Chakvetadze at 30-40 to take the match. Chakvetadze walked off the court in tears at the end of the match, which lasted 2 hours, 18 minutes.

"I was really upset because I felt I could have won the match,'' Chakvetadze said. "It was tough for me to push off the leg and run, but I stayed in there because I thought maybe Maria would make mistakes.

"She didn't.''

Sharapova didn't seem to adjust her go-for-broke style after Chakvetadze was slowed by injury.

"Maria's a fighter,'' Chakvetadze said. "She doesn't give up. She goes for it. That is why she won.''

Wintermute
Aug 12th, 2005, 06:02 PM
Thanks for that, Goldenlox.

It's a real shame for Anna that her injury worsened at the crucial moment. And we see from her reaction how much she invests emotionally in the match.

goldenlox
Aug 12th, 2005, 06:05 PM
If Anna won, she probably would have withdrawn from the QF with Dani.
That's what Sharapova did.
These injuries need time, to rest and recover.
But Anna showed she's a fighter. That's how you win on this tour.
You compete for every point.

Third round (Thursday)
-----------

+ MARIA SHARAPOVA [1] d. ANNA CHAKVETADZE [16], 4-6 6-4 7-5

Maria overcame a recurrence of the pectoral muscle strain (which she first suffered at Zurich last October), a bad cold and a sore throat, to survive a gruelling 2h 18m marathon against Anna, who "played smart and efficiently with her steady ground-game and created a rash of unforced errors by Sharapova."

Maria's inflamed right pectoral muscle meant that she couldn't serve or hit her forehand properly, and it's a testimony to her tremendous fighting spirit and indomitable will to win that she emerged with a 4-6 6-4 7-5 victory.

I extracted the information in this report from the following sources:

Articles:
http://www.wtatour.com/newsroom/stories/NewsArticle_7768_rx.asp
http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/

Scores-thread:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=184280&page=8

First Set
---------
The match started at 15:02 PDT, with Maria serving first. Anna led 3-2 with a break, and won the first set 6-4 at 15:39.

Second Set
----------
SHARAPOVA 2 4 *@ 6
CHAKVETAD 1 3*__ 4

The second set appears to have gone with serve until Maria broke Anna's serve at 4-5 after Anna had led 40/30, to take the second set 6-4 when Anna hit a backhand wide at 16:21.

Third Set
---------
SHARAPOVA __*@ @* * *@ 7
CHAKVETAD @*__@__* *__ 5

The third set was a battle of the walking wounded, with Anna taking a medical time-out for a left-groin strain (while changing ends after breaking for 3-2); three games later, she slipped and fell "while chasing one of Maria's stinging replies", and started crying.

Anna broke for 1-0, then held for 2-0 after saving two break-points at 15/40. But Maria fought off that break, and the one at 2-3, and won 4-6 6-4 7-5 at 17:20 with a swinging crosscourt forehand volley-winner on her second match-point. Anna was in tears as she shook hands, and left the court sobbing.

Anna quotes
-----------

"Maria was a fighter and she fought all the way. That's why she won.

"I pulled my muscle in my leg, so I didn't feel so well. I was really upset because I felt I could win the match. I had a little bit bad luck."

Maria quotes
------------

"It wasn't me out there today. I'm not playing 100% physically. I'm serving 92 miles per hour and I'm not hitting my forehand. With that, it's tough to come out against a player that has nothing to lose, to play a girl who is swinging out there and seems to be playing unbelievable.

"It's been an on-and-off problem for me [since Zurich 2004]. I don't think the pain is going to go away with me trying to play and hit as hard as I can.

"There's nothing torn, thank God, but it keeps coming back. It's the whole muscle and hurts on the moment of impact. The more you play and the bigger you hit, the more painful it is.

"The good thing is that I know that at the end of the day without playing great, without having a forehand or a serve, you tough it out and you win. The bad thing is I can't really hit a big serve, and you feel like crap.

"There's no pressure at all. It's not important for me to play. I always feel terrible pulling out. It's not me. But if it comes to a point where I can't serve without pain and it could hurt me for the Open, there's no reason to think about No. 1 or anything else.

"As much as I want to play, it's more important to take care of your body and be ready for the US Open. I'm just going to wait and see if I can take care of it tonight. Playing with pain like today's match for a top athlete isn't right and it's more important to be ready for the big ones.

"If I go out on the practice-court and I can't serve without pain, there's no reason for me to play because it's more important for me to be ready for the US Open."

Maria then pulled out of her quarter-final against Daniela Hantuchová with her right pectoral muscle strain. In a way, it would have been better if Anna had actually beaten Maria, then we could have had a mouthwatering Anna v Daniela match instead of a walkover.

Anna is now up to 28 in the entry rankings! :D

This means she has leap-frogged her Toronto first round opponent, Nicole Vaidisova, who is down to 32.

The draw looks a little tough but you can view the first match in a couple of ways:

Am I right in thinking Vaidisova hasn't played since Fed Cup in July (not counting World Team Tennis)? She could be rusty in her first competitive match back while Anna has good momentum coming into this.

On the other hand, Nicole might be fresher from her time out while Anna is trying to shake off that injury.

Either way should be an intriguing match. Hope I'll get to see it on TV.

Yea she hasn't played in a month, only 2 matches since Wimbledon, i am worried about this match though, Nicole is so good off both sides... however i think Anna has great momentum and that month off for Vaidisova will be costly.

Here is the full Pilot Pen draw:

Davenport(1) v. bye
Golovin v. q
Llagostera Vives v. Hantuchova
Raymond v. Schnyder(6)

Kuznetsova(3) v. bye
Maleeva v. q
Dechy v. Farina Elia
Chakvetadze v. Myskina(8)

Molik(7) v. Dulko
Medina Garrigues v. Razzano
Douchevina v. q
bye v. Dementieva(4)

Petrova(5) v. Jankovic
q v. Groenefeld
Bartoli v. Likhovtseva
bye v. Mauresmo(2)

Total deja vu! I have a feeling Myskina will pull out though - hey everyone's doing it! ;) There's more points on offer at the US Open and Nastya may want to rest up to make a better stab at it than she did last year.

However, it remains to be seen whether Anna will be fully recovered for Monday/Tuesday.

Revenge for Wimbledon!

But seriously it was an excellent win over another higher ranked player. The stats aren't that impressive:

1st Serve %
Anna: 49%
Jelena: 54%

Double Faults
Anna: 7
Jelena: 9

Break Point Conversions
Anna: 8 of 14 = 57%
Jelena: 6 of 8 = 75%

Total Points Won
Anna: 82
Jelena: 74

Anna got a lot of points on Jelena's second serve but look at how many breaks there were.

Anna's next opponent is Maria Kirilenko who won her first round in straight sets against Silvia Farina Elia.

The stats seem to indicate that Anna wasn't serving too well against Jankovic on Monday (but Jelena was serving worse!).

Anna has a lot more experience now than she did in Miami; she was ranked lower than Maria at the time. Result is below. Their rankings at the time are in brackets:

2005 - MIAMI - HARD (O) - R128 - M. KIRILENKO (48) def. A. CHAKVETADZE (65) 7-5 6-3

That's a good article. Anna is very emotional.

Chakvetadze is on the other end of the spectrum. She started with a new coach, Rikard Allgurin of Sweden, a month ago and has had outstanding results.

She reached the quarterfinals in San Diego and then the third round in Los Angeles before her win over Jankovic.

"I’m trying to improve my serve and fitness with my new coach," said Chakvetadzke, 18, a Russian. "It’s been going real well."

She’s played so well that Chakvetadze rose to a career-high No. 28 last week before dropping two spots to 30th Monday.

The win over Jankovic wasn’t easy, however. It lasted 1 hour, 39 minutes and was 2-2 in the third set when controversy struck.

Jankovic was serving to Chakvetadze, who had the advantage in the game.

Chakvetadze appeared to have won the game to break serve, but Roger Pennington, the chair umpire, overruled the point because a ball had fallen out of Jankovic’s shorts during the rally, disrupting the Serbian’s concentration.

The announcement by Pennington was met with dismay by Chakvetadze. Making matters worse was Pennington announced it was deuce, not advantage Chakvetadze.

"I didn’t realize what was going on and then when (the umpire) said ‘Replay the point.’ I was like ‘Hold on a second’. First, he said it’s deuce, and now he’s saying replay the point," Chakvetadze said. "I was a little bit upset, but then she helped me when she double-faulted."

Had to take sneaky peaks of the live scoreboard while I was at work but it seems that Anna played a much better match than she did against Jankovic - her serving in particular was improved.

Had to take sneaky peaks of the live scoreboard while I was at work but it seems that Anna played a much better match than she did against Jankovic - her serving in particular was improved.

Straight sets is a good result and to be into the semi-finals is really awesome.

Agreed that Anna made this a tougher result than it could have been. She had early chances that she missed. Her serve was back down to the levels it was against Jankovic; she needs to be more consistent here as most Top 20 players will punish this. But it's all very encouraging.

And she gets to play Davenport (who just knocked out my favourite player) in the semi. It will be a good experience for Anna to play someone of Davenport's quality (although if Lindsay serves like she did in the second set against Daniela today who knows what might happen).

British Eurosport are showing one of the semi-finals live so, depending on scheduling, I might get to watch Anna on TV for once!

yeah,IMO its definitely possible for her to beat linny!because,if you draw similarities through dani hantuchova, she is on the same level as dani.and that means,in the background of that great match from dani, anna has kind of the same chances to defeat her!!and, another important fact:anna is one of the few players, who are virtually trouble-free since the start of the season(which can sadly not be said for too many others at the moment..),and i think, this could be a valuable advantage for her.so,anni-baby,i wish you all the best for tonight!!your are a lovely girl!!!

Good luck against Lindsay!

NEW HAVEN — Djambuli Chakvetadze sat in the corner of the Court 2 bleachers and showed the nerves of an anxious father.

He sat next to his daughter’s coach, Karl Alljuarin, and took long, deliberate drags off a cigarette.

Anna Chakvetadze was serving for her quarterfinal match against Jie Zheng and started to repeat some faulty steps that almost cost her the first set.

The daughter inherited her father’s nerves. She looked up at him, then the sky, took a deep breath and proceeded to hold serve to solidify her first WTA semifinal appearance with a 6-4, 6-4 Pilot Pen Tennis tournament victory over Zheng on Thursday at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.

She advances to face Lindsay Davenport today on Stadium Court.

"I was nervous. I know it showed," Chakvetadze said. "I’ve never been in this position before. When you play tennis in Russia, there is this certain intensity. There is emotion. And then there are nerves."

The nerves weren’t just a product of Chakvetadze’s match with Zheng. It has been that type of season for the 18-year-old Moscow product. Chakvetadze started the year without a coach, and then she found Alljuarin, who has been working with her for the past five months.

But the nerves stem from youth, and ambition from her heritage. Chakvetadze said she understands the pressure of being a female Russian tennis player. Everyone expects to become the top player. Few achieve that lofty distinction.

"It’s very much like America," Chakvetadze said. "That’s why tournaments are never easy. That’s why tennis is not easy."

Chakvetadze coasted through the first set and broke Zheng’s serve three times to take a 5-1 lead. Zheng then ripped off three straight games. Chakvetadze had trouble with her serve, double-faulting twice on set point at 5-3 to force deuce. Zheng held serve, then pushed Chakvetadze again before the Russian laced a baseline forehand for the first set.

As Chakvetadze finally settled down, Zheng unraveled late in the second set. Down 4-3, a series of unforced errors allowed Chakvetadze to run away with the final three games to secure a semifinal appearance.

She said she doesn’t want to think about the success of other Russian tennis players. Chakvetadze only cares about her performance, her possible jump up the rankings and, with stoic sincerity, added, "you never know what will happen. You only have to concern yourself with you."

After the win, Chakvetadze didn’t smile. She walked off the court and kissed her father on each cheek.

Then they exhaled.

Was an interesting match. I taped it. Had Anna gotten her first serve going it would have been a lot closer... Her serve is definitely a weapon, reminds me of Justine`s, just too low a percentage, too many double faults. Lindsey was much more on her game tonight than against Hantuchova. But Anna was able to put Lindsey on the defensive on some occasions, and did break her serve once. Anna had the crowd roaring with one shot she chased down, followed by a winner. She is quite fast. In the end though, and as happens almost every time with any player, Lindsey`s zingers won the day. Great tournament for Anna. Good luck at the U.S. Open! :D

I'm impressed with Anna after seeing her play Lindsay Davenport. :) :tennis: She wasn't over matched at all in playing Davenport for the first time. Anna lost 3 and 3 but she played better than that. I think Anna will be a top 20 player at the very least. She is quick and has good power and a pretty good first serve. It pains me to say this because I like Maria Kirilenko so much. But I think Anna has a bigger upside than Little Masha does mainly because Kirilenko's serve is a major weakness to her game while Chakvedatze's serve is already pretty good and should get a lot better in time and become Anna's biggest weapon.

Davenport's 18-year-old opponent Friday, Chakvetadze, had some energy at the start, but she was a bundle of nerves as well. "I was playing Lindsay. She's an American. We're playing on center court," said Chakvetadze, who made her deepest run into a WTA tournament. "I was a little bit nervous. I didn't start so well."

Chakvetadze had never played Davenport. In fact, the youngster had never met any of the other three semifinalists. "It's a good experience for me. She's No. 1 in the world, I guess," Chakvetadze said. "It's always good to play players like her, you know?"

PILOT PEN TENNIS (New Haven, Connecticut, USA, hard, WTA Tier II)
================

All in all, a great tournament for Anna as she upset 10th seed Jelena Jankovic, won a mouthwatering match with Maria Kirilenko (an equally cute 18-year-old Russian), and beat Zheng,Jie to reach her first-ever semi-final on the WTA Tour - and in a Tier II!

It is my opinion that Anna won not only the tennis-match but the beauty-contest over Maria Kirilenko! ;)

-----------
First round
-----------

+ Anna Chakvetadze d. JELENA JANKOVIC [10], 6-3 3-6 6-2

I was delighted that Maria Kirilenko and Anna both won - neither of which I expected - and that they would play each other in a mouthwatering second-round match! :hearts: :hearts:

Anna's result is a fantastic one after she withdrew from Toronto last week, and avenges a heartbreaking 6-4 6-2 loss to Jankovic in the first round of Wimbledon - a match which, if Anna had won it, might well have led her to the quarter-finals, given the weakness of that section of the Wimbledon draw.

From Yahoo! Sports:
>>>
Jankovic led the third set 2-1, then lost the remaining five games. She dropped the fourth game without getting a point, and the long fifth game reached deuce seven times before Chakvetadze broke her serve.

Jankovic then managed just three points in the last three games and was hurt by three double faults on her last 13 service points.
<<<
[Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer]

Jankovic: "I don't have confidence so I'm not playing my best. I have a new coach now [Roman Savochkin] and he's changing little things in my game. So all the shots feel so insecure at the moment."

------------
Second round
------------

+ Anna Chakvetadze d. Maria Kirilenko [LL], 6-3 6-3

These two 18-year-old Russians are arguably the two cutest girls on the WTA Tour! ;) I expected an easy win for Anna because Maria has been struggling recently with loss of form and pain in her left knee.

Little Maria is the one I have considered inducting into my eternal fanship (still just a demi-fan), but I think it's correct that Anna won because she is making increasingly exciting progress in recent months - and more particularly, recent weeks.

Maria has more innate talent than I've seen from Anna (at the French Open and Birmingham), but Anna is the more accomplished of the two 18-year-olds to date (Anna's highest ranking is #28 - last week - and Maria's highest is #45).

The match started at approximately 10:15 EDT.

First Set
---------
CHAKVETAD * *@__*@* 6
KIRILENKO _*__@*___ 3

An interesting pattern of holds and breaks. At Birmingham I got the impression that Anna was reliable at holding serve except when she has to serve for the set. But Maria's best shots are probably her returns of serve.

Anna won the first set 6-3 at 10:55.

Second Set
----------
CHAKVETAD _*@*@*__@ 6
KIRILENKO *_____*@_ 3

Anna serving 0-1: saved "a few" break-points before holding.

Anna won 6-3 6-3 at 11:39.

-------------
Quarter-final
-------------

+ Anna Chakvetadze d. Zheng,Jie [LL], 6-4 6-4

----------
Semi-final
----------

- Anna Chakvetadze lt. LINDSAY DAVENPORT [1], 6-3 6-3

I was hoping beyond hope that Anna would stop Davenport getting to the final and regaining the #1 ranking from Maria Sharapova (http://www.geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) next week! :(

Anna: "I never played against her so I think it's a good experience for me. She's No. 1 in the world, and it's always good to play against players like her."

Been busy the last couple of days so just catching up on everything here. Anna had an awesome tournament and it's very encouraging for the next two weeks. :bigclap:

If there's anything I'd worry about it's the inconsistency on her serve which was highlighted in the matches against Jankovic and Zheng - matches she should have won more quickly than she eventually did.

Didn't have the opportunity to follow the match against Lindsay - or indeed watch it. The scheduling of this as the night match meant that it wasn't shown on British Eurosport - they showed the Mauresmo/Medina Garrigues match instead. Considering how high Anna's ranking now is it's surprising how little she's been on TV here; it's a conspiracy I tells ya. ;)

In the US Open first round, Anna plays Viktoriya Kutuzova of Ukraine who came through all of her qualifying matches in straight sets include a defeat of the ninth seed Emmanuelle Gagliargi. It's sometimes difficult playing a qualifier when they have already had matches to get accustomed to the courts and surroundings but Anna's preparation has been excellent so hopefully she should get through this without too much trouble.

As of Monday Anna is up 6 places to 24 in the rankings. :bounce:

She is defending 234 at the US Open so were she to lose first round she'd drop down to around number 40. :scared:

As an American I have to apologize for that. Drunk jerks. Unfortunately is part of the ambience of the U.S. Open and players have to learn to deal with it.

Don't apologize. ;) Duiz is American also. He just posts things to make it look like he isn't and that America is bad.

(Btw, I'm American also.)

It is fine. Just personally have lost all of my patriotism for reasons not worth going into here. Am moving to New Zealand as soon as the funds allow it. :D

Anna Chakvetadze def. Viktoriya Kutuzova 6-3 3-6 7-5 :bounce:

That was a really tough match. Anna was behind for almost the entire third set. Multiple breaks of serve were traded and Kutuzova was two points away from winning at one stage.

That was a bit scary. Hopefully some match reports will appear soon.

Well done Anna for getting through it. :yeah: She showed that she's a real fighter.

Just recovering from my near heart attack following that singles match to say the doubles draw is out.

Anna is teaming up with Tatiana Golovin and they play tomorrow against Elena Dementieva and Flavia Pennetta, the 14th seeds. Good luck to Anna and Tati for that one.

I caught some, but not all, of the match. At times, both players were very sloppy. Both had lots of trouble with their 1st serves, especially Kutuzova. Plenty of unforced errors. I had never seen Vika before, but she can smack the ball. In a sense, this match was a good sign for Anna. She was not playing her best tennis and could have packed it in. But she didn't. She's got heart.

I was trying to think why both players seemed to have problems with focus. Some of this may have been due to the location of the Court [#9]. It is a small court located between Court 7 and Court 10, both of which have a fair number of seats and can get loud. #7 had Schnyder/Martinez with a loud contingent of Schnyder fans. #10 had Gonzalez/Moodie with a raucous group of Chileans. So here were were these two teenagers trying to concentrate with loud cheers erupting regularly. That was a challenge for them but they will both learn from it.

Good win Anna. A first round loss would have been a setback for her.

As I suspected Anna's first serve wasn't working too well. Same problem she was having in New Haven. Hopefully, she can get a few more first serves in during her next match against Jill Craybas.

I wasn't following Craybas's match against Jamea Jackson too closely but I'm pretty sure she also came from breaks down in the third set to pull out a win. Since Craybas is American there's a sliver of a chance Anna's match will be on one of the televised courts.

A report on the match -

Anna Chakvetadze and Vikotoriya Kutuzova! Unfortunately, the match was played pretty late which made it nearly impossible to have good quality action shots from my camera, so I took a few stills... It was a very entertaining match, the best ladies singles match I saw at this year's Open so far, they just had so many high quality rallies and the intensity was pretty high. When the match started out, I think Anna was playing her game, just solid tennis while Viktoriya was playing pretty safe, trying to see what could work... Without too many problems, Anna was able to roll on and win that set thanks mostly to a good command of the rallies and just making few errors.

But then, in the second set, Kutuzova started playing very agressive tennis, playing with power, angles, and just taking a lot more chances than in the first set... It paid off too since she was able to really take command of the whole match tempo.

http://www.tennisrulz.com/articles/200508/IMG_5559.JPGThe third set gave us the highest quality of the three, both players were trying to impose their rythm, trying to take commands of points, it was just a great battle. I was very impressed by how Anna was able to follow up more and more points to the net, she just clearly had so many more places to go in her game to try to win the match. It's normal of course, she has the more experience out of the two, but she is still young and it was very impressive to see! And it was interesting because although I know many posters on the board talked about Kutuzova choking, I really don't think it happened tonight. Both players were playing very high quality tennis in the third set and Kutuzova certainly did not slow down... I just think she lacked experience and did not know what exactly to do to counter a few of the things Anna was doing. Being a night match, and having lots of supporters for both players, it really was a high quality match... I'm glad I saw it:)

I agree with Goldenlox. I do not think that Kutuzova choked. She played hard and in the end came up a little short against a seeded player. Nothing to be ashamed of there.
