Good luck to Anna against Masha. :) Tjis is the biggest match of Anna's career and I wonder if she'll be nervous playing Maria Sharapova on the big stage.

May 28th, 2005, 03:25 PM
Anna lost to Maria 1-6, 4-6. She had a tough draw - Suarez, then Maria in round 3.
But she got over 100 points, and a decent payday.

You have to stay positive, and enjoy your success this week.
This is a little taste of what the future is like.

Derek.

Anna put up a good fight in the 2nd set, but too many errors. :( Anna did show on several points that she can exchange groundstrokes with Masha. ;) Just maybe that Anna hasn't become as consistant yet. Still, a very good RG for Anna. :D

I am a Maria Sharapova fan, but I liked what I saw of Anna Chakvetadze on BBC television yesterday. They showed the second set, and I have written up a point-by-point match-report:

I watched the last 7 games of the Sharapova match several times.
Anna has to be steadier.
Maria serving 5-4, 0-15, second serve, then 15-15, second serve.
Put the ball in play, Anna. That was not good tennis.

the cat
Jun 1st, 2005, 05:46 PM
Hey GL since you watched Anna's match with vera several times I'm sure you noticed Anna nearly brushed off Masha at the net with a weak handshake. I bet Mahsa wasn't pleased with that.

GL, you make a pertinent point about how Anna must keep the ball in play when Masha is serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and not getting her first serve in. Anna played a poor game in the last game of the match against Maria.

goldenlox
Jun 1st, 2005, 05:49 PM
I saw that handshake. Pretty funny
Anna knew she threw that last game away. It could have been 5-5, and Maria wasn't playing well.

Anna has to learn when to hit out, and when to leave a margin for error.

I was looking at Anna's numbers, she was #192 last June.
So her forward move is as big as Zhenya's.
Maybe she'll be seeded at the majors next year.
And next year she will probably start earning real money.

Anna played well enough to win :)
didnt do too much really but just enough to win

Anna's movement on grass like on other surfaces.......... really good.

she had probs closing 1st set out........ tried to force it but made too many UE's, serve got her through it though dispite serving DF's at some of the 5 set pts she had.

she plays Zhenya today, gonna watch that for sure.

Anna didnt have a chance on any of the 5 bp's
Tatiana aced her on two, and hit 3 other big serves to win other bp's

Tatiana Df's on two of her set pts though ( why not on BP  )
Anna played ok though, Tatiana really went after Anna's FH which made errors :(

Anna should have gone 5-1 up though in 2nd but return errors cost her and the next game she DF's to give the break lead.:fiery:

In TB a missed smash at 1-2 and the next pt too which was the hangover effect. she did get both pts back on serve but more errors cost her the match.

Indeed, I think she surprised everybody  :bigclap: :clap2: Despite my disappointment after this loss,(coz she obviously should have taken this match :bigcry: ) I think that Anna must have played very well to lead 6/1 4*/3 against the defendant of the title  and I'm extremely glad to see that she can level with top players on this surface :D :rocker: :rocker2: She definitly deserves her place into the top 40 and I think this match will boost her (just like the close match against Srebotnik at Antwerp did) and that she might reach the 3rd or even the 4th round at Wimbly :D Udachi at Wimbledon Anna! :bounce: :bounce:

Yes Duiz, Anna is made for grass. It helps make her groundstrokes more effective. Plus she's reached the junior Wimbledon final. So I think all, if not most, of us agree grass is Anna's best surface. :)

I think Anna played too much grass court tennis leading up to Wimbledon. :( She needs to avoid over playing in the future so she can be rested and strong to play the big tournaments like Wimbledon. I'm sure she's very hurt by losing in the first round of Wimbledon. Jankovic played well in Birmingham so this isn't as bad a loss as it might appear to be.

London, England: Russian teenager Anna Chakvetadze, making her debut appearance at Wimbledon, arrives for the joint ATP/Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Wimbledon Player Party.

Jankovic Steps on the Juice (http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/reports/2005-06-20/200506201119282071772.html)

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia-Montenegro left Russia's Anna Chakvetadze wiping away tears with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on the opening day of The Championships.

The No.17 seed, who reached the final of the event in Birmingham a couple of weeks ago, used her powerful shots to ruin the Russian's maiden entry at Wimbledon.

If the conditions were hot Jankovic's merciless pounding only added to her opponent's misery. Chakvetadze seemed unsettled by the excessive heat from the very first game and was made to sweat as Jankovic made her run from one corner of the court to the other.

Broken consecutively to give Jankovic a 3-0 lead in first set, Chakvetadze was made to look uncomfortable on the surface she says is her favourite. But just as the 17th seed looked to run away with the match the Russian bounced back, breaking Jankovic's serve to gain her first point. She held on to her serve in the next game and seemed to surprise Jankovic with her renewed confidence and shot selection, especially the superb drop shot that foxed her more highly fancied opponent time and again.

As Chakvetadze gained in confidence and bettered her forehands and volleys, Jankovic's form slipped a bit. She misread the Russian's game and was often stranded in the wrong corner of the court. For a brief time the momentum seemed to swing in favour of Chakvetadze. From 3-0 the score progressed to 5-4, Jankovic still leading but clearly making more mistakes.

But just when the set looked poised for a tight finish, Chakvetadze lost her control and, after some close calls, her composure. She questioned the line judges and in frustration gave away easy points - double faulting on serves and putting too much power into her backhands.

Jankovic made the most of Chakvetadze's outbursts. She steadied her game, produced some cracking forehands and neatly wrapped up the first set 6-4.

In the second set, the Russian punctuated long rallies with well-placed drop shots. But Jankovic had found her form and aces, volleys and powerful forehands rained all over the court.

This was written by a photographer who met Anna in Eastbourne -

Anna Chakvetadze plays Svetlana Kuznetsova on centre court. I take about 150 photos during this thrilling match. Anna has great chances, it is a tough match and Anna is clearly dominating; I am already preparing my video equipment to tape the press conference of the winner over the defeated champion but Anna has some bad luck at the end. Kuznetsova wins to her great surprise.

When I change to court 2 for Myskina vs. Vento-Kabchi, I see Anna’s father using his mobile. Anna comes up with tears running down her face; her father hands over the phone, and Anna just cries into the phone without speaking.

Here's more -

Andre returns from Court 1 telling me he took match photos of Anna Chakvetadze RUS. He is completely enthusiastic about her. Later in the day we see her walking by and we immediately decide to approach her and present our album. She is very friendly, although she has never seen us before and checks the album from the first to the last page. When seeing the pics of Elena Vesnina, which we took in Marseille one year ago she calls out “That was you taking these pictures? Elena is my best friend, and she showed them to me but she did not say it was a professional shooting!” With these pics, the ice was broken and Anna proposed to have the shooting that same day. We agree to pick her up at her hotel at 17.00. As the hotel is located directly on the Beach Promenade, we just cross the street to the park of the Wish Tower and take some really very nice pics. Anna’s very long hair is blown by the strong wind when she sits down on a small wall; we asked her to never ever cut her hair and she promises.

Having exchanged addresses for keeping contact, a new slogan is born for us: “Anna Chakvetadze … more than just another Anna!”

I attended the Birmingham 2005 tournament from Monday to Sunday, and now that I've uploaded to my website all the photos I took, it's time to share my observations of Anna.

First round:
+ Anna Chakvetadze d. María Sánchez Lorenzo, 6-4 6-3

I am a demi-fan of Sánchez Lorenzo (my favourite Selesian player and a very attractive lady to boot), but Anna has been a revelation for me since I watched her match against Maria Sharapova at the French Open on TV, and I'm now a demi-fan of Anna too.

Anna is very cute, with unique sculptured facial features, including pretty eyes and the nicest nose I can think of. She's not a particularly great player, although she does go for her shots, is willing to come forward to hit overheads or drive-volleys, and is very reliable at holding serve - except when she has to serve for the set or the match (she needed endless deuces at 5-4 in the first set, and was broken at 5-2 in the second).

Anna did not appear to enjoy this match very much - she looked like she was chewing on wasps all the time; never did a smile cross her face while she was playing and I was watching (although she did smile once when making her way to the practice-courts). But not smiling is just the way she is; it didn't put me off loads of photos! :)

Anna does look better on TV than in person, because of the close-ups: on TV you get to see her eyes bulging as she runs for a dropshot, or the cute little blows of her lips just before she serves or receives.

PHILIP: This is a nice biro that they gave me at the Whirlpool booth.
ANDREW: Not as nice as Anna Chakvetadze though!
PHILIP: I don't think you can compare a biro with Anna Chakvetadze.
ANDREW: Well, they both bulge when you press them, don't they? And have you ever seen a biro smile?

Second round:
+ Anna Chakvetadze d. EVGENIA LINETSKAYA [12], 4-6 6-4 6-4

I didn't get to see much of this match due to other priorities, but a great win for Anna, and to tell you the truth - speaking as a fan of Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova - it was good to get Linetskaya's annoying grunt out of the tournament. I didn't get to watch much of Linetskaya, but I certainly heard plenty of her! ;)

Third round:
+ Anna Chakvetadze d. SHINOBU ASAGOE [6], 6-4 6-4

I was only able to watch the first three games of this match before I had to go and watch Maria Sharapova on Centre Court, but it was certainly a commendable victory for Anna, especially after she suffered a neck-injury in the first set so painful that she was in tears, and had to take a medical time-out to get it massaged.

Quarter-final:
+ TATIANA GOLOVIN [5] d. Anna Chakvetadze, 6-4 7-6 (7/3)

This was an entertaining match between two very attractive players. Tatiana played much better than her dire performance against Rika Fujiwara in the previous round, although still well short of the standard required for induction into my eternal fanship, or the standard she showed at Birmingham 2004 (where she was runner-up to Maria Sharapova in a mouthwatering final).

At Birmingham 2004, Tatiana was placing the ball much better than at Birmingham 2005, with immaculate length, engineering the points beautifully to create open spaces for her winners. She also had the sexiest grunt in tennis ("uy... uy... UY!"), and those microshorts! But these three ingredients were missing for much of Birmingham 2005, robbing her of her unique "Golovinesque" appeal.

So, while part of me was loyal to the memory of the Golovin I found so entertaining to watch in 2004, part of me wanted Anna to win. Anna has been a revelation to me since I first saw her play on TV at the French Open, with her cuteness and animated beauty - I actually found her more attractive than Tatiana in this match.

Anna went for her shots and was making all the nice noises in this match (apart from a couple of points early in the second set when Tati decided to grunt), but she was nervous from the start, and Tati emerged victorious with a handful of spectacular winners on the way.

At Birmingham and Eastbourne, Anna played about 9 matches in 9 days.
This was her first match since losing to Jankovic at Wimbledon.
Anna is moving in the right direction.
Next is Benesova. Another winnable match.

A nice win for Anna. I am hoping to see her make some noise at the US Open again this year (who can ever forget her upset last year?)

Hey guys & Girls.
I'm a big fan of Anna too.
I'm so convinced she will win tomorrow over Benesova i cannot wait.
(ps - i would rather see her not play doubles in this tourny.)
Does she play any doubles before her next match vs Benesova?

I look at it this way. Benesova was made to look good by Zuluagu who had not played for 2 months/ same thing when she defeated Peng (who had not played for a long time)!!! Anna demolished Golovin and we know how talented she is. I don't rate Benesova very much i watched her match against Schnyder.... pathetic!!!
And Chakvetadze >>>>>> Schnyder imo.

She won 15 or 16 points straight from 1-3 to 5-3 *30-0 in the second set.
Unbelievable!

btw- how bout we bump this fan club up to the top tier and relegate Zvonareva...
See you in the round of 16 Anna, & your opponent.. Peer or Likhovtseva (very winnable)....
I can sense a QF coming up (again winnable probably against Petrova or Morigami)
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves though focus on the next round Anna.

Yes that was important... good point.
Perhaps she could also thank Mirza who took Morigami all the way, whereas
Anna is fresh as a daisy after thrashing Elena in quick-time.
