Congrats to Anna on one of the biggest upsets in grand slam history! :bounce: Well done. :D But it's too bad it had to come at the expense of her Russian compatriot Anastasia Myskina.

I only wish the USA Network in America showed some of this historic upset. But they were busy showing Nick's Pick's and Andre Agassi's 10 minute warmup. The USA Network didn't show 1 point of Anna's huge upset win and they had every chance to. Instead they waited until after the match was over and foolishly just showed match point. :(

Anna's interview is located at www.usopen.org/en_US/news/interviews/2004-09-02/200409021094162228372.html (http://www.usopen.org/en_US/news/interviews/2004-09-02/200409021094162228372.html). I am amazed to learn that she doesn't have a coach. But it's good that she could beat Myskina without a coach because that shows she's tough and can think on the tennis court. :)

I predicted this before it happened. I saw her play on tuesday and after her win I found out that she would play Myskina and I said that she would beat Myskina. I knew she could do it. She has a great game. If she keeps this play up she'll be in the quarters against Davanport. That would be on TV for sure.

A. CHAKVETADZE/A. Myskina

7-6, 6-3

An interview with:

ANNA CHAKVETADZE

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. As you were traveling around to various challengers, trying to get into the main draw of a regular tournament, did you ever think once you got here you would beat a Grand Slam champion?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No. It's like too much, you know. Actually, I playing quallies every time. And 25,000, every time quallies, and 50s. Every time I had to pass quallies, and then playing main draw. It's so difficult. I'm so exciting that I beat Myskina today, but she played not so well. But I'm happy that I won, you know.

Q. We have a saying in this country. "Pay your dues." It means in order to get to the top, you have to work from the bottom. Is that what you did with all these challenger tournaments?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Actually, I'm like 200 almost, so I don't think about it, you know. Maybe now I will be top hundred. I'm so happy that I will be.

Q. What was your emotion when you won?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I couldn't believe that I could win. I just wanted to play my game, you know. I couldn't believe. Now I still don't believe that I beat Myskina, and she's like first in Russia. She won Roland Garros. It's unbelievable.

Q. When you did win, you clapped your hand over your mouth as if, "Oh, my God, I won." Is that what you were trying to convey?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, because I couldn't believe. I tell you. Like two sets, it's unbelievable for me. That's great.

Q. I don't know many things about you, could you tell me your tennis story. You grow up in Russia.

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, I born in Russia. My dad is Georgian, my mom is from Ukraine. I have never been in Georgia. I start to play tennis when I was eight years.

Q. Some of your family teach you?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, no. My mom wants. We go to like try to play. Actually, I played piano. Then my mom said, "You want to try tennis?" I said, "Yeah, it will be great." Then like I try. I said, "Okay, let's stop with piano, I want to play just tennis."

Q. In Spartak club like many other Russian girls?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yes. It's like Myskina and Safin. Everyone is from there. But I practicing in Valeri (ph). Myskina now is practicing there also. And Bovina also. It's very good club.

Q. That's in Moscow?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: Yeah, it's in Moscow. It's like new club.

Q. What kind of a piano player were you? Were you a good piano player?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: No, very bad. I didn't like. When you are like eight years old, you want to move and playing games and everything. I didn't like. That's why I stop.

Q. What are your parents' names? What jobs do they have?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: My mom is, her name is Natalia. She's like housekeeper. She's staying with my brother right now. She watched me by TV. My dad is businessman. His name is Jonbouli (ph).

Q. Where do you train?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I train in Valeri Club in Moscow. I don't have a coach right now, so it's difficult to practicing without.

Q. Do you come from a rich family or like Sharapova, not so rich?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: It's like middle.

Q. What's your biggest win before this?

ANNA CHAKVETADZE: I think just here I play so well. It's like my first tournament that I played, first Grand Slam. Nothing before.

I was impressed by Anna's gracious behaviour after winning when she did not overreact and was quick to go and shake hands with her opponent. Having read the post-match interview I'm even more impressed at her attitude. She wasn't put under a lot of pressure by Myskina but she seemed more consistent than some of the other young Russians who made their debuts last year. I hope she continues to do well.

Anna has to learn from the two Marias, who played well against Serena in a major. And then their game fell into the toilet.

Anna has to stay hungry. Keep the same underdog mindset. Don't believe you suddenly got good.
You still have to earn every point.

If it's Anabel, Anna needs to keep the ball in play and Anabel Medina is out of the Kremlin Cup. On the faster courts Anna is the better player.

Anna vs. Anabel :o Anna just keep the ball in play avoid the UE's and you'll win. For the sake of atttractive tennis Anna deserves to win. She is such a nice girl :)

She came and sat right next to me during the 2nd set of the Kirilenko/Yakimova doubles match. I kinda debated with myself about whether or not I should say something, and then I decided to ask her in Russian if she understands English. She said "da", and then asked me in Russian if I can understand Russian. I said "nyet". Then she laughed :D

Here is some news:
- she isn't sure when she will go to Melbourne. She thinks she may stay in Sydney a bit longer to train
- after the AO, she wants to go to Pattaya City, but will need a WC. If she gets one, she will play Pattaya City, and then Antwerp. If not, she will play Open Gaz de France, and then Antwerp
- she was practising with Martina Navratilova this afternoon for quite a long time

yeah i saw the match on the tele, the backhand was going ok, the forehand was a little vulnerable, she kept doing a midcourt slice shot to try and mix things up, didnt work too well after the first couple of times.

I had a chat with Anna today.

She is such a nice girl :)

I found out some other stuff, but I'll post about it when I have more timeThis was a tough 2nd round match. You can see the other girls improving.
You will also:)

Hopefullly Anna will play Paris instead of Pattaya. Indoor carpet is better suited for her. The higher you're ranked the better it is. Though on grass/carpet it's fairer apart from the top 15 or so not to go by rankings rather prev. results on the surface. Last year on grass we've had the example C. Castano. And of course we've had the Kremlin Cup, 3 players shouldn't have been there considering prev. results there instead of being in the Main Draw.

I like Anna's style - she has a good future.
I think she will go somewhere along with many other Russians.
What is her best surface? I've seen her only on hardcourts.

Hello everyone :wavey:
I just came here to say hi! cos I hope you don't mind if I post on this thread, cuz I like Anna Tchakvetadze and I would like to cheer for her with all of u who support her also!
The first time I saw Anna play was at Juniors in Wimbledon in the final of 2003..she lost that match, and it was a shame cuz she served a df on Flipken's match point and stuff.. Anyway, then I did not hear of this player for a while but then last summer I saw her results of Surbiton, and she did very well to reach the final :) Anyway, of course the big break-through was when she beated Myskin'a in US Open, and I hope we can seeing more great matches like this from Anna! :D
Anyway, good luck to her in Paris! I think this is okay draw and she should qualify for sure, although I agree with Daniela that the "danger player" is Garbin

Anyway, I realise I didn't finish saying what Anna and I discussed. We talked about Russian music for a bit, and she said that she likes Monokini :yeah:, but doesn't really like Julia Savicheva, although she liked her last single. I think she might also like Zemfira and t.A.T.u., but don't quote me on that.

I also asked her a trivial question - which metro station in Moscow is her favourite :o, and she said that she hasn't caught the metro in 4 years because she is driven everywhere :drive:

Also, and I may have mentioned this before, she said that she trains at Valery. I asked "that's Nastya's club, right?" and she said yes, Nastya and some other players train there. She said that Elena Bovina was there last year, but she hasn't seen her for awhile (because she's in Spain).

hmm...she should be in your siggie then :)

for those who speak dutch, this is what happened in the tie-break:

All in all good tournament Anna, but the carpet of the Kremlin Cup suits her better. Pretty sure there Anna would've won in straight sets. The disappointment Anna didn't return as good as she could.

Szebotnik is a tough veteran.
Anna must have competed well. She was down a break in the third.
This was a good week for Anna.
She has to keep improving.

Vera Z. lost to Anastasia in a similar match in the San Diego semis.
Vera and Anastasia both had several mp's in a long third set tiebreak.
Vera came back in her next tournament to beat Sharapova and Golovin.
That close loss energized her.
Stay positive, and keep working. Keep improving your ranking.

Hantuchova fans are wacky. That's for sure.
Why don't you like Daniela? me think she has a lot of common points with some russians :) that's why i cheer for her+ for nearly all russians :) :D ;)

Why don't you like Daniela? Hantuchova is unimportant to me.
She's just another journeywoman player, that the Russians have to roll over on their way to the top.

Sharapova just had three matchpoints on her serve against Serena in the AO semis.
She blew it, but came right back to win Tier I Tokyo.
This is part of your learning process.
Make sure you have fun every day. Make sure tennis is fun.
You're improving, you're gaining experience.

Anna earned 65 points in Antwerp, she's #67 this week.
She has less than 60 points to defend until the US Open.
Anna should be in the top 50 by then. Maybe top 40.
