Anna doesn't volley like Hingis. I think she does hit with some power.
Her game is still developing. This sport is mostly mental. Everyone in the top 100 can play. It's really how often you play well, especially key points in close matches.

Very true. I've noticed that Anna attempts the volleys and they sometimes don't work, but you can tell she's working on her game. She's really young. I have high hopes for her because she's achieved so much. I just love the fact that she outsmarts her opponents as opposed to just smacking the ball.

haha Yeah I notice some power in her game which is noticeable since I hear occasional grunts from her. It's good that she has some power in to her shots, because that's what people have always said that Hingis lacked. Even Hingis hits with more power and grunts these days. It just goes to show you how tennis is such a big-hitting sport.

That is a big difference I didn't consider. That's why more of Anna's shots go out because she doesn't have a lot of top spin. Hingis however does. Do you think that Anna could benefit from adding more top spin to her shots, or do you think she should just keep on doing what works for her? Also, would you agree that Anna is closer to Daniela Hantuchova as far as the flat shots go. I kind of think Anna is mix of both Daniela and Hingis.

She really improved in the fall. What Anna started dong well is close people out. She beat Nadia 3 straight times.

Matthew Cronin -

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR (WOMEN): Russia's Anna Chakvetadze, a gritty, emotional 19-year-old with sweet strokes and killer instinct sometimes lacking in her countrywomen. If this Moscow titlist does enough off-court training and adds a little more variety to her already intelligent game, she'll easily crack the top 10.

I have to say Anna plays nothing like Dani. Dani has a big serve and hits powerful very flat shots off both wings leaving little margin for error. She is good at net but a relatively poor mover.

Anna is speedy on the court and has superb intuition which allows her to get in the right place at the right time. She has developed a deep accurate first serve which causes opponents more trouble than they would think from someone of her height. She makes good use of angles and her crosscourt forehand is pretty amazing. Anna is not that accomplished at net yet but she does make a go of it and occasionally makes a poor shot choice from that position. Her second serve is also a lot more attackable than the first and she can get nervous on it in tight situations. Anna plays a counter-punching style which relies on her accuracy to draw errors out of her opponents.

I always thought a better comparison is to Myskina than Hingis.

Could Anna's facial expression be a secret weapon?

As we all know, Anna's facial expression during the match is often sad, sometimes looking close to tears...and her opponents see that and think its their play that made that happen. They may let their guard down and become over confident.

But this past fall season has shown that "Sad Anna" is only a mask, and Anna's fighting spirit and mental toughness is quite high!

Anna ended last year on a roll. It's important that she starts 2007 strong.
She should win Hobart, or at least get to Serena and play her well.
At the AO, she should at least play to her seeding.

NICE INTERVIEW with Anyuta (in russian)

Thanks for posting that.

This interviewer (and Anna) agrees with me - her great asset is her on-court intuition.

Interesting to read that her racquet sponsorship has finished. I assume Fischer will renew it - they'd be pretty stupid not to considering Anna's profile is rising.

She says she's studying psychology, so that Ace Tennis interview from last year was wrong (they said she was studying ecology) unless she switched her major. Maybe it is helping her stay calm in her matches. Her emotions have been more under control this year and she's closing out matches better.

I think her comment about not expecting too much of herself in Australia may also be a psychological trick if any of her potential opponents hear of it! I hope she has given herself enough time when she gets to Oz to properly prepare.

I don't know much about Georgian cuisine so:

Khinkali (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khinkali) (Georgian:ხინკალი) are Georgian dumplings filled with various fillings, but usually spiced meat. They are eaten plain, or with coarse black pepper. The top, where the pleats meet, is tough and sometimes not eaten, but discarded to the plate so that those eating can count how many they have consumed. This top is called the "kudi" or hat.

goldenlox
Dec 19th, 2006, 01:09 PM
I can understand why Anna wants to focus on singles.
Her ranking is money, big money.
She's going to be seeded where she avoids top players in early rounds.
That's a very big deal. Vera Z faced Hingis, Dinara and Kim in round 1 of the first 3 majors this year.
Anna will have a top 16 seed, where she can do damage.

What was the other one she said? Khachapuri?

Khachapuri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khachapuri) (Georgian ხაჭაპური xač’ap’uri) is a filled bread dish from Georgia. The bread is leavened and allowed to rise, and is shaped in various ways. The filling contains cheese (fresh or aged), eggs and other ingredients. Khachapuri is similar to the Italian calzone.

I see there is a variation of this where they crack a raw egg into the middle of the bread which is in a boat shape. Not so sure that sounds nice. Do you like this GeorgianFan?

I don't know if it's good or bad, but most of the top 10 is big girls who bash the ball.
Anna will continue the smaller girl near the top. Like Hingis against Williams and Davenport.

Wintermute
Dec 24th, 2006, 01:02 PM
It works OK for JHH. She's powerfully built in a small frame and I think a year or two ago she overtrained but now she's got the right balance. She's not a bad role model for someone like Anna who wants to break Top Ten and stay there.

The problem with trying to compete consistently with those girls is that it does put extra strain on your body. I'm worried that this year Anna might be thrown off course by an injury. She was lucky this year that her arm and shoulder didn't put her out for a long time.

Anna was a shadow of herself in that match against Golovin. It was obvious that effects of her forearm injury had caught up with her. Golovin served very well and Anna didn't make the sort of returns that she's capable of. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on this result.

What will be interesting is whether Anna can keep getting wins over higher ranked players. I think someone in the GM worked out that Anna was joint-second with Bepa Z (behind Hingis) in number of upsets amongst players who finished in the Top 50 this year. In 2007 she can only really upset Top 10 players and everyone else will be gunning for her. If she shows she can handle that then it will be a step in the right direction.

You've got a better chance now I guess, since she's improved so much. I saw her beat Emmanuelle Gagliardi in straight sets. She lost next round to Zvonareva.

There's going to be 20 players coming into the AO who are better than the Hobart field Anna will face, unless Serena's in form.

Yeah she only needs another four higher seeds to drop out and she'll be in business. :p To be honest I don't think this makes a great deal of difference to her chances apart from the fact she won't have to face Justine at any point.

This has been a sucky week for my faves (apart from Vera) so I hope Chaky can rectify that next week.

Anna plays a flat, power baseline game. But she's learning to play a smart game.
I think she'll be good on any surface.
Her volleying and serve need work, if she's ever going to be a true top 5 player, but she's already getting top 10 results, so her mind is top 5.

I wonder how old that quote is; it's from her WTA profile right? I think she said that when she came on the main tour after her success in the Wimbledon girls singles.

But surely she'd have to answer differently now. American hard courts are her best or perhaps fast indoor carpet like Moscow. The faster the better I think. She still has to prove herself on grass at the top level. Clay's got to be her worst but she did have some good wins at Warsaw last year.

But I agree with Goldenlox - Anna is developing well as a player and could be good on any surface.

For the first Time Anna reach the Top 10 of WTA ranking.

Before the Title in Guangzhou she is 26th, then:

Guangzhou - Tier III (Hard) --> WINNER, 120 Pts
Moscow ---- Tier I (Carpet) --> WINNER, 300 Pts
Linz -------- Tier I (Hard) --> Round 2, 25 Pts

Hobart ----- Tier IV (Hard) --> WINNER, 115 Pts
Australian Open - GS (Hard) --> QF, 250 Pts
Paris ------- Tier II (Carpet) --> QF, 70 Pts
Antwerp ---- Tier II (Carpet) --> SF, 125 Pts

So, from October 2006 a wonderful run for Anna, now we see what happens in the future, I think that Anna can consolidate the ranking and also try to go up.

That's an understatement isn't it? I think she's done fantastic so far.

She lost in round 4 of Indian Wells to Ivanovic last year and is defending 45 points. This year that's equivalent to round 3. Given that the seeds get byes to the second round Anna only really needs to win one match to defend her points. Plenty of scope to pick up more from then on.

Well! Anna likes Belgian chocolate:cool:

Belgian chocolate is considered to be the gourmet standard by which all other chocolate confections are measured. Even the Swiss, known for their own high quality chocolate, imported the basic recipe from French and Belgian chocolatiers.

What makes Belgian chocolate unique is the quality of ingredients and an almost fanatical adherence to Old World manufacturing techniques. Even in today's world of automation and mass production, most Belgian chocolate is still made by hand in small shops using original equipment. In fact, these small chocolate outlets are a popular draw for tourists visiting Belgium today. Much like wineries, tours of Belgian chocolate shops include tastings and exclusive souvenirs.

I still like Russian "Mishka"

The WTA's website has Anna at #8 in 2007 prizemoney with $222,000. But they mix Aussie and US dollars.
I think Anna has made about US$180,000 in Jan and Feb, which is still very good.

I think a realistic goal for Anna is to make the YEC. That event pays at least $100,000, even if you go 0-3.
And that would guarantee Anna finishes 2007 in the top 10 and gets a big Gold Exempt rating for 2008.

Well that surprises me. A year ago you were one of the few who thought Anna could make Top 10. ;)

But seriously I think she is in with a good shot. She's been so consistent these past few months.

Anna's improvement last fall surprised me. But it can happen suddenly. That's why players have to stay positive. You never know when good things will start to happen.

I want Anna to talk to Dinara about living tax free. Tennis players only make good money for 5 or so years. You want to keep as much of it as you can. Because after tennis, you want to have the money you earned. Then money isn't an issue any more.
Of course, Nastya and Lena still live in Moscow, and they have plenty of money. This is still something Anna should consider, and discuss with Dinara, Lena, and Nastya-when she gets back on tour.
Nadia is moving this year from Moscow to Monaco, so you can discuss it with her also.

Feb 28th, 2007, 07:09 AM
Well, I think it's a good idea for Anna to move to Monaco... but you can tell very obviously from her diary that she's VERY close to her parents and brother, and so if she moves to Monaco, and i believe that she very much wants to live with her family, that means her entire family will move to Monaco with her? which I don't think is too practical though......

She's not like Nadia, who doesn't seem to be as close to her family as Anna? like she rarely mentions them in interviews or website.. i think.. and her coach/someone who travels with her is not her dad either.. So I think the situation is very different for Anna than other players.

but that's just my opinion hehe.

What would it mean to "move" to Monaco? Would she have to spend a certain amount of time per year there or just own a flat there? I don't think most people actually "live" there.

I don't know. Sharapova lives in California and Florida, but claims to live in Florida for tax purposes.
That is what Anna should ask Dinara about.
She can still spend time with her family, and have an apartment in a tax free place.

It's something I would think about, if I were in Anna's situation.
But like I said, she should talk to Moscow residents Lena and Nastya also.

Daniela Hantuchova "lives" there. You have to apply for a residence permit which presumably gives you tax residence in Monaco. I think the fact that a tennis player spends so much of the year travelling that they are never in one country for a very long time is beneficial in this situation. But a lot also depends on the country where you are a citizen. For example if you are a US citizen then you will continue to be taxed by the States regardless of where you live. I don't know what the situation is with Russia.

Anyway Anna loves Moscow too much and I assume she has an accountant who can advise her on this stuff.

goldenlox
Feb 28th, 2007, 07:41 PM
I'd like Anna to stay in Moscow. Just like Lena and Nastya. It's good to have top Russian players who really represent. And are a part of the community.
Vera Z. has a Moscow apartment too. Vera D. is there. Several others.

But when you are capable of earning the money that Anna will earn over the next few years, you have to look at different possibilities.

Matt Cronin -

Chakvetadze has started to work with Robert Lansdorp, Sharapova's former coach. He's not going to travel with her much, but she worked with him in LA before the tournament began and is planning to returning at some point. He loves her variety and touch but says the first thing he noticed was that she doesn't know how to hit any two balls the same way. She's always trying different speeds and spins, which is fine, but with Lansdorp students like Sharapova and Davenport, you can see just how cleanly they hit and how they are bio-mechanically programmed to smoothly strike the lines.

Myskina also trained with him for a while.

It's nothing to tell yet. Anna came to me before IW. First impressions weren't bad:tape: I decided not to give her too much information before the tournament, otherwise it may have caused problems. She will think of new technics and may lose old.
I told her to come again after 5 days, for example after Miami. Here then we shall work as follows.

"I told Anna to take her emotions under control, No Tears":tape:

Did you know that, Djamal is looking for you?

Oh really? That's nice. In this case I'll go to see her doubles match and see
her father too. I thought that he didn't like me.

Anna's father and Robert decided to continue working:cool:

Is she going to visit Lansdorp in April?

Djamal: "No, after Miami Anna will depart to Moscow for preparations to Fed Cup. We have different schedules. Maybe before Stenford or after San Diego".

Whats your impression about Robert?

Strict, but he knows his bussines.

He is famous for it - for the severity, Aren't you afraid?

Patty Schnyder's husband Rainer Hofmann is coaching Anna Chakvetadze. "It was a long time ago. We did it just behind the scenes," said Schnyder. "And she was always wanting him to do it, but he never wanted to do it officially. We'll see what's going to work out. And she's always together with her dad. So we have to see how things work out, but I don't want to be too much involved in it. And I like Anna, and maybe we do some workouts together and hit sometimes, very few." Hofmann met Schnyder when he was hired by Schynder's parents to break up her relationship with a previous coach that had resulted in damage to Schnyder's health and tennis results. The private investigator has previously been convicted of fraud over a business deal and had no tennis background before taking a role as Schnyder's coach."

No way. Anna's got her schedule right. She needs the week off before NY. Sure it would be great if she won the USO Series but I think she is more concerned with getting as far as possible in Flushing. If Anna reaches the second week we don't want another situation where she goes into a match against someone like Sharapova exhausted and unable to fully compete. She's got a lot of expectation behind her now and needs to deliver on the big stage.

It's a great Year for Anna, she reach the peak of the Season between Roland Garros (a QF on clay is good) and US Open, 4 Titles with this 100% record of wins in finals.

The worst moments are the lost in first Match in Moscow and the match in Wimbledon, because I think that Anna can go very deep in this GS, maybe a SF or Final in 2008 (I hope).

Anna has still some work to do in different parts of her game (and also mentally), but she is already 6th in the ranking and shows nice skills during this Season!

I'm positive on what Anna can do in 2008, Australian Open are not so distant, only 2 Months, I hope she confirms at least the result of 2007.

Thanks for the summary of her year....looking for her to have similar results and keep defending her points and build up on points in some clay tourneys she did poorly in this year and Toronto and the Fall.
