Groenefeld/Shaughnessy [4] vs Bye
Harkleroad/King vs Kaufman/Nelson (WC)
Durkin/Fink (LL) vs Chakvetadze/Craybas
Drake/Krizan vs Huber/Mirza [8]

Anna's getting a healthy dose of Kostanic in San Diego this year. But partnering Jill they should get some home support which could maybe push them through. They are last on Court 1, Monday.

Anna's match against Nadia was on too late for me to follow so I got the result at breakfast this morning...

Way to go Anya!!! :woohoo::bounce::bounce::bounce::woohoo:

That was a very nice scoreline. And she played extremely well judging by the stats. She served 12 aces  and took 4 of 11 break points compared to Nadia's 7 aces and 0 of 2 BPs.

True Nadia is coming back from injury but this is still Anna's second best win ever. This loss doesn't mean much in the scheme of things for Nadia, but the win for Anna is vitally important given how many points she's defending this week.

Anna is very underrated and at the moment she can use the to her advantage - the element of surprise! Nicole is a tough proposition. Anna put in a better performance this week than she did here last year and being a set and a break up against Vaidisova in the quarter final is something to be proud of. :D I wonder if her exertions of the week caught up with her and she got tired but probably nerves got to her. Her serve seems to go when she gets nervous. But regardless of that Anna owned Nicole for a set and half.

Don't know about JP Morgan Chase this week because the website sucks but I can't see why she wouldn't play there unless she wanted to take a week off. She is defending some points from last year but perhaps has decided to play Montreal instead. Will have to wait for the draw to come out later.

As long as she can get past Katarina I think this is a decent draw and Anna can make the quarters. After last week I'll bet no-one in her section of the draw would relish the idea of having to play her.

Srebotnik made the final of Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago so that's not gonna be a walk in the park.

Anna is defending points from reaching the third round last year so she needs to equal that to stay on track.

This almost makes it worse but it's not unexpected. Anna and Alona's match lasted two and a half hours! Alona was bound to be tired.

There were a lot of unhappy people on the scoring thread yesterday who lost vcash on Anna. And one particularly unpleasant comment about Anna from a newbie; I've been registered on wtaworld for a year now and I never gave out a bad rep until yesterday. :fiery:

Anna has a tough draw in Montreal.
1st round is against Suarez and if she gets through that it is Sharapova.

Sharapova has officially withdrawn from Montreal. That means we'll probably see the struggling Petrova moved to Sharapova's slot in the draw.

Suarez seems to me very up and down. She's not quite regained the form she had before she was injured. She beat Safina in three sets in San Diego before clawing her way through Kateryna Bondarenko in three and finally fell to Schnyder in another three-setter. Paola's run to the LA final in doubles this week means she could be tired when she makes it to Canada. Anna has a decent opportunity. :)

Paola's run to the LA final in doubles this week means she could be tired when she makes it to Canada. Anna has a decent opportunity. :)

Anna has to get past Suarez first & to do so will need to play better than in LA. If she does face Petrova it will be tougher than last time. Petrova had a good run in doubles in LA & will want revenge. Anna needs to play better than in San Diego to have a good run in Montreal. & I hope she does.

Agreed, Anna has to play better than LA to beat Suarez. But I read a match report that Bondarenko played out of her mind to defeat Anna so maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked. Petrova will still be lacking confidence in her singles regardless of how she's done in doubles. Of course this week both players can call their coaches onto court at change-of-ends - interesting to see who takes advantage of it.

Good news. Anya and Lena have once again qualified for the doubles main draw. :D

On Sunday they crushed Canadian wildcards Sharon Fichman and Valerie Tertreault 8-1 in a superset. And this morning they had a two hour battle against Foretz/Schruff coming through 7-5 4-6 6-3. :yeah: Their main draw opponents will be Husarova/Pennetta. - no easy draws here!

Chakvetadze bt Dushevina 7-5 6-3

Anna went down a break at the beginning of both sets but fought her way back. Her first serve wasn't going in but she was really dominating when it did. She'll need to pick up the first serve percentage against Petrova.

But all points she picks up here are a bonus. :)

Well done Anna. It is hard to play a compatriot especially when you are the favoured one as Anna was against Vera.

Anna has to lift for Petrova. She will want revenge for San Diego. Her game has to be sharper as well as that was her first match in a long time in San Diego.

Good Luck Anna:)

:bounce:Great match Anna. A better scoreline than two weeks ago. :yeah:

I think Anna played this match just right - she was very solid off the ground and made some very well placed serves. Her tactics were right.

Nadia looked pretty despondent at the beginning and only her serving was really working. Anna took advantage and made particularly good use of her angled cross-court forehand to draw Nadia out of court. Anna made some accurate serves; in the first set she won 92% of points when her first serve went in. I think it's really improved from last year but her second serve is still too vulnerable.

Nadia called her coach at the end of the first set and they had a little laugh about something, obviously to get her less tense. Anna started making more errors at the beginning of the second set and it looked like Nadia would finally get into the match when she went up a break. But Anna reigned it in and hit a few more aces plus a nice drop shot off a second serve return. Nadia slumped again and Anna cruised to the finish line.

Anna did a cute little wink and victory sign to the camera as she walked back to her chair at the end. She had a nice on-court interview as well. I wish I'd videoed this.

So Anna's picked up even more ranking points (which is good because she's defending loads at New Haven) and has a good chance against Dechy next round. :D

Shahar Peer is up next. Anna beat her comfortably in Miami this year. I think Shahar is much happier on the clay and this is certainly a winnable match but still tough.

Anna's ranking next week is provisionally #26 (close to her highest ever) and that would be her seeding for the US Open (not including any withdrawals) so she's really doing the business this week. :)

[...] Chakvetadze prevailed in a battle between unseeded players, edging Shahar Peer, 76(3) 75.

"I am happy that I won in two sets because it could have been three sets and much tougher than it was," said Chakvetadze, who is through to her career-first Tier I semifinal. "It's the best result of my career, so I'm very happy, but I definitely want to be in the finals."

wtatour.com (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/newsroom/?contentid=691)

Chakvetadze barely edged Israeli Shahar Peer 7-6, 7-5 yesterday, advancing to her first Tier I semi-final. She is the eighth-highest ranked Russian woman in the world, at No. 31, and will face the toughest assignment of any player today.

"I'm never on the good side of the draw, so that's OK," she said.

"The part of our draw," said Hantuchova after falling to Hingis in the third round, "is the one that I think the winner in this tournament is going to come from."

I can't wait to see Anna on TV. I think I've only seen her on TV once before and it was a long time ago. I saw her match in person at last year's USO against Kutusova and she played well to get that win. It was a tough match, but I think she's continued to improve. No one's giving her a chance at all in this match which makes me think that she could produce the upset! She'll need to play really well and hope that Hingis shows up a little flat after her big win against Sveta. It could happen, but it will take some luck and some solid play from Anna. She's got to be excited and shouldn't be too nervous considering what a huge underdog she is in this match. Great to see her doing so well this year, although I'm still a bit mad at her for beating my Ana I twice recently! I won't hold it against her though - unless they both get to the final! ;-)

Hingis bt Chakvetadze 6-3 3-1 ret. :tears:

Poor Anya. One of the biggest matches of her career and she had the misfortune to get an injury like this. She was still very competitive on the return games and if fully fit I think this would have been a real test for Hingis.

I hear Anya may take 4-5 days to recover which puts her out of New Haven and her semi-final points are lost. :( Shame on the Montreal crowd for booing her. I know they love Martina but I thought they were a more intelligent tennis crowd than that. All the retirements suck and Anna realises that but she was in obvious discomfort.

Chakvetadze sends Hingis to the final

http://www.rogerscup.com/5/photos/341x230/chakvetadze19.jpg

August 19, 2006 - Seventh seed Martina Hingis advanced to the final of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, defeating World No.29 Anna Chakvetadze of Russia 6-3, 3-1, ret., at the Uniprix Stadium this afternoon.

The Russian started to feel the effects of a pulled right forearm muscle in the middle of the first set. After losing her serve twice and committing five double faults, she called for a trainer at 2-4. She received more treatment at the end of the first set, feeling incapable to serve with confidence or hit forehand winners.

“I felt a bit of pain last night, but it wasn’t anything serious,” said Chakvetadze. “I aggravated it in the first set.”

Chakvetadze wanted to use the trainer again at 3-1 in the second set but she quickly realized that she wouldn’t be able to continue.

To applause and some boos – the first heard at the Uniprix Stadium this week – she shook hands with her opponent to put an end to the semifinal match.

“I don’t think the crowd was booing me personally,” said Chakvetadze. “They were booing the number of retirements this week – there have been so many players other than me to retire.”

“I would have liked to win differently,” admitted Hingis. “Still, the match wasn’t as easy as it looked. Also, I didn’t know how badly she was injured because she was serving aces at the same time. On my part, I felt heavier and less agile than last night. My objective was to vary the shots. I used drop shots because those who have seen her play gave me advice. I think they worked at least one out of two times.”

Rogers Cup (http://www.rogerscup.com/3/en/news/2006/samedi1.asp)

"You don't want to win a match like this," Hingis told reporters. "I just hope she gets better before the U.S. Open (which starts on Aug. 28)."

Chakvetadze was the seventh player to withdraw or fail to complete a match here.

The boos she received while leaving the court were rude and uncalled for! This was the biggest match of her early career, and it was in her best interest to retire.

As a Canadian, I felt embarrassed by the negative reaction she received from some spectators. This was her first year participating at the Roger's Cup, and I hope she returns next year.

But it's still a Tier I semi, not a major, you have to retire

Wintermute
Aug 20th, 2006, 08:28 PM
Hingis, seeded No.7, advanced to the final when Anna Chakvetadze retired trailing 63 31 with a right forearm strain. Playing in her first Tier I semifinal, Chakvetadze looked as though she was going to give Hingis a run early on, hanging tough with the former No.1 through the first several games. But as the set went on it grew increasingly apparent that she was struggling, and shortly after calling for a medical timeout trailing 4-2 and dropping the first set, she decided to stop.

"I wanted to retire in the end of the set, but then I felt okay, so I tried to play; but if something is bothering you, you can't play," Chakvetadze said. "I felt it yesterday and I had treatment but it wasn't bad and in practice I felt okay. But in the start of the first set I felt something wrong with my hand. It was really stiff and hurting when I served and hit forehands."

Chakvetadze's fighting spirit, which has taken her to impressive wins this week against the likes of Nadia Petrova, Nathalie Dechy and Shahar Peer, came through Saturday as she continued to play despite apparent injury distress, an injury trainers told her afterwards would take less than a week to heal.

"I thought I could win; if I didn't, I'd never go to the court," Chakvetadze added. "And I told Martina that the next time I'll be ready, and it'll be a tougher match. I'm really sad because I knew that I could be in the finals."

"It's kind of disappointing to win a match like this," Hingis stated, "but she continued so you still have to keep the focus, because you don't know how much it's hurting and how much she still can play. I had never played her before. And those down-the-line backhands were really quite impressive."

wtatour.com (http://www.sonyericssonwtatour.com/newsroom/?contentid=692)

To a pointed query, the five-time Grand Slam winner [Hingis] said: “Watch out for players like (Anna) Chakvetadze (of Russia). She is the one to watch in the future. Maybe Shahar Peer (of Israel) also. These are the two players whom you will see often in the future. I feel there are a few young players who make the game exciting to watch.”

Lovely comments from Martina, who admitted afterwards that her legs were very tired from her previous match. If Anna hadn't been injured I think she had an excellent chance of winning.

Selyoink, I thought it was fairly clear Anna was struggling. I think only her backhands were not causing her pain.

At least the injury is not serious.

Anna can focus on the US Open now.

Has Anna withdrawn from New Haven? I hope she does. While it is a shame she will lose her points cause she is a young player & she wants to go up as a high as possible & rankings mean a lot to her right now unlike say Kim who can afford to lose a lot of points as she can win a tournament ranked outside top 100 & rankings don't mean much to her anymore as she has been to number 1. Health has to be Anna's priority.

I think Anna should have withdrawn from New Haven. Need to take injuries seriously.

She is losing 3-6 3-3
Been broken and broken twice in 2nd set. Having big problems on serve. IN Montreal she said the injury affected her serve.
But I guess she felt the pressure to defend points:shrug:

Players hate to get fined for withdrawing.
I hope Anna is healthy for NY, much more important than this

Anna retired down 6-3, 6-5 30-30. I wonder what happened? She never should have played this tournament. Now maybe she is hurt even more.

Anna retired 3-6 5-6*
Strange time to retire. Anna was struggling all day on serve. But why not retire earlier.
Not a good decision by Anna's team to play New Haven.
I hope this doesn't affect her US Open.

I was slightly shocked that she went ahead with this match. The physio at Montreal told her it was 4-5 days for recovery.

I don't know if it was stubbornness on Anna's part or someone in her camp talked her into playing. I know this was her biggest points haul to defend before Montreal but it can't have been worth it.

On the bright side Anna won't have to go to New Haven next year. She's played every week of the US Open Series and I think it will be good to have the week before the US Open to rest. She shouldn't worry about dropping those points. Anna can make it up in the indoor season and Australia next year.

bad decision to play esp if it seems like it has made her injury worse :( :(

instead of having about 10 days to get better, she only has about 6 or maybe 7.

suicide indeed :( :(

Yes Anna didn't do well indoors last year or in Australia this year.
Anna has committed to Beijing this year so a change in schedule. Hopefully Anna plays a couple of the lower tier Asian events as well.

I didn't like Anna's Australian schedule this year. Only played Sydney as a warm up & it always gets a very good field even though she lost to Zi. While it meant she wouldn't waste enrergy in the heat it left her with very little match play before AO. Anna should play Gold Coast next year.

Draw is out. Anna plays Martina Sucha first round. Her draw is very nice I think. But presumably it will change.

Feel free to add your thoughts on how Anna will do in Anna's US Open thread:

Don't think Anna was fully-fit. On the contrary it's unlikely Anna will be running out of steam/exhausted during this years Indoors season. The frustrating thing some players are luckier than others. Unfortunately not everybody can have the luck of Patty Schnyder.

Anna is up to #27 on Monday's world rankings with a points tally of 726. Included in this are the following five tournies from her fall schedule last year:

Tournament.......Points
Luxembourg...........25
Filderstadt...........1
Moscow................1
Zurich................1
Hasselt...............1

Anna's changed her schedule this year so she's dropped Luxembourg and is going to China. Plenty of scope to make a ranking improvement with those four 1-point first round exits being in her 17 best results. I'd estimate that Anna needs to pick up a further 200 points to make the Top 20. I reckon a very good Tier III and a couple of Tier IIs could do it this fall.

Anna Chakvetadze vs (5)Lindsay Davenport

 Anna is barely defending any points right now and this is her first draw. Just typical.

Their one previous meeting was the New Haven semi-final in 2005 where Lindsay won 6-3 6-3. But Lindsay is a year older now and Anna is better player now - I hope she can make something of this match. Anna will have to use all her skill at moving the ball to different areas of the court to get Lindsay running and she'll have to absorb the power that's coming at her. Difficult.
