Former top 5 player Regla Torres announced today from her Canary Islands home that she intends to return to tennis and the FWTT Tour. The Spanish star, who won Charleston just a few months ago, left the tour a few weeks prior to the French Open with little explanation. She said, "I was stressed and I decided I didn't need any of this. I didn't like where my career was going and I thought I needed a change."
When asked why she's now decided to play again, she said, "Well I found that my love for tennis was too much, and particularly for this tour to just give it all up. I've almost played on this tour for 3 years and I want to continue. I've also found that my problems outside of tennis aren't as bad as they were, and I certainly want to compete on the tour again."
It is expected that Torres will play her first tour event in months at the San Diego tennis classic in US. Although she's back on tour, Torres said she will not be participating in any doubles tennis at least not in a permanent doubles partnership. This she explains is because she intends to avoid confusion and messes that can occur if and when she decides to take a break again. "Well when I left I felt really bad for my [the then] partner Gianna, but at that time it was a decision I had to make, and so I don't want to get myself into those situations again."
