Dementieva Too Strong for Roesch

Tuesday, June 24, 2003

Elena Dementieva, the 15th seed, proved too strong for Germany's Angelika Roesch, winning 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Ladies' Singles.

Ranked 88 places above her opponent, the 22-year-old Russian commanded No.2 Court with a relaxed and confident performance. The first set went with serve until Dementieva broke in the fourth game and subsequently held her third service game, to take a commanding 4-1 lead.

A cut to the first finger of her right hand looked to threaten the Russian's progress but after treatment from the trainer she was back on court. Roesch held serve to close the gap 4-2 before Dementieva took control again to win the set 6-2.

The second set began with a marathon game. The German was unable to convert five break points and the powerful Russian held serve. Clearly frustrated, Roesch's play become more erratic and Dementieva breezed through in less than an hour.

Dementieva win her first tour title in April, beating second seed Lindsay Davenport in the final of the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Florida.
Well done Elena! :bounce: :D :D
