Lindsay Sarile of the Philippines is seen practicing for the 2003 FWTT Hastings Direct International Championships in Eastbourne. Sarile, seeded 6th, recently celebrated her 18th birthday on the 8th of June and received a bye into the 2nd round.

"Well, things have been doing okay. Roland Garros was a bit of a disaster yes but I did come off a win during the clay season. I'm playing with the same mindset with clay, going only here and Wimbledon for grass. This is certainly not my best surface but I don't want to roll over."

"The draw is exceptionally tough. We got the top two players in here. We go a slew of top players, grass specialists and dangerous floaters. I think I play either Tiff (Eggert) or Candela (Sanchez-Connelly), two determined and experienced players. I just hope that I don't embarass myself."

"Wow, turning 18 is something else. I'm just thankful that I am given 18 years in my life. To think, there have been several instances in my life that would have prevented me from becoming an adult and a citizen. That would have been a shame and I would never take that for granted again."

wow what an amazing match with sarile. i really can't believe i pulled through.

now i play ferrer. i think i have the best record against ferrer. the last time we played was last year Eastbourne quarterfinals. it is almost poetic to play again. hopefully, i can pull through again, but it will be very very very difficult.

grr Sabine you're infuriating with that

you do not know this situation, Sabine lost nearly every second match in this year. She did not achieve anything! You won again, so play your game and do not give your statements!!! :fiery:

Sabine is one of the FWTT greats, she is one of the few grand slam champions. Tiffani hasn't and will never win a grand slam. It would be a real tragedy to see Sabine leave the tour. And I may have reached my 4th quarterfinal of the year, but I lost first round in my other 10 or however many tournaments I played this year. Dropped from 3 in the world to 14 and after I lose in Eastbourne will drop even more!! But I am still fighting and you should too.

Jun 21st, 2003, 09:30 PM
Don't retire Kris, I remember when Jane Wong went on a losing streak from mid clay season all the way until the last 3 weeks of the season, and everything come together when I won a tier 4 reach the final of a tier 3 and almost beat Huubere in chase, you need to believe trying some new strategy until you are comfortable, then youi will be back :)

Yak
Jun 21st, 2003, 09:32 PM
I agree with Tiffani! All the players that are slumping are thinking of retiring  I call that quitters! Last year, I won maybe 4 singles match and no quarterfinals all year and this year, I've won 24 singles match and I have reached quarterfinals(or third round) or better in 11 of 16 tournaments I've played.... You don't know when you'll get out of that slump...

Yak
Jun 21st, 2003, 09:33 PM
And it's all about strategy and by looking at our match score, you didn't have that great of a strategy...

wongqks
Jun 21st, 2003, 09:43 PM
yes and also opponenet points change so much over the past 2 years, it no longer works if you send 60 0 40 or something everytime (something which got me an rg title in 2001 ;) )

Tennis124
Jun 21st, 2003, 10:03 PM
and just for the record, in real life, lilia osterloh got her ranking up to 45 in the world last spring, then she lost fist round of every tournament except 1 for the rest of the year and lost early in all her challenger events this year, but she didn't give up. and now she qualified for wimbledon and hopefully its a new start for her.

Congrats to the winners so far this week!

And Sabine definitely should NOT retire!!!!!....tiffani is right!....FIGHT!...marteena loses practically every 1st Round match right now (and for the past 4 months!!!), and with all my points to defend will probably fall outta top 10 soon...so i know how u feel though! ;)

Paula :D at beating Eva - about bloody time.

 at losing to Tiff, pretty much same score as at Surbiton!!

It was very hard to decide who i wanted to win in teh final, as both Karla and Tiff are my old doubles partner, and I ahve had such fun wiht them over my career. I'm glad it was a good, exciting final with lots fo high quality tennis from both girls :)
