Venus to skip doubles
By Chris Jones, Evening Standard
16 June 2003
Former champion Venus Williams could struggle to make an impact at this year's Wimbledon because of a chest-muscle injury, writes Chris Jones.

Younger sister Serena, the defending champion, has revealed that the problem that ruined Venus's bid for glory at the French Open earlier this month means they cannot team up and defend their Wimbledon doubles title.

She said: "I don't think Venus should have played at Roland Garros. I will miss the doubles very much but it's not fair to put stress on her injury.

"I am sure I will get chill-bumps walking back into Wimbledon and not holding on to the French title was a disappointment but it only took me 20 minutes to get over that hurt.

"I am tough on myself when I lose and I am extremely determined coming into Wimbledon."

Well, when I read about Serena playing mixed doubles and then the reports on the Women's doubles as well, I wondered if both stories were correct, as I could hardly see Serena competing in all three events.

Now it makes more sense why she would be playing mixed doubles.

Yeah, right, we believe that !

We will see if this is correct, if she meets Justine at Wimbledon. It was clear that the loss at Charleston spooked Serena when she met Justine at RG. Her confidence has been affected. She was very nervous playing Justine.

It's very much possible that Serena thinks she doesn't have herpes simplex. The reality is that 90 % of the human race has this virus.

Every time Justine gets nervous her herpes breaks out.

So we have to see that at every slam for how many more years? Can't she put a band-aid on? Maybe a hat, ro some sunglasses. Get a tattoo? Something!

my ass she was spooked. you fucks kill me when you come in and try and tell how serena felt and you ain't even seen her 500 feet away. you don't know how serena felt, and let me say this. justine did something no-one has done in 3 years, beat serena twice in a row. now look at this picture. how about the Serena vs. Amelie rolland garros? why wouldn't serena be considered spooked going into that match knowing Amelie had beat her the last time. This is just prooving you have no clue what the hell you runnin your mouth about.

Justine beat Serena twice in a row

therefore she is the legitimate #1 player in the world

and she has 1 slam so she should be #1 while Serena holds 3 slams so SHE should be the #3

and u are soooooooooooo d-u-m-m if you cant see that

If Venus is injured, I just wish she would pull out. Why risk further injury. Rest yourself and come back strong next year.

I hope not, but I think she will withdraw becuase it seems like this injury is more serious than she is letting on.

Is this still the same injury as at RG? Cause at RG it was an abdominal strain and here they just said chest injury  It's making it's way north :p

It seems like the same thing, but I don't know. I am hoping against hope that her withdrawing from doubles is precautionary.

Yes. And you're MISTER PERFECT I suppose?

Justine is human and Serena should start to show her human side more than she does now. Otherwise she will never be in people hearts as a real champion when she retires within a couple of years.

I prefer the human above the ....

I wonder if they are really out of doubles because I just got a list of the seedings for mens' and ladies' singles and doubles and the sisters are on it. They are seeded three.

I'm not Mr. Perfect, you can only reign for a year, and I gave up my title in 2001.

Serena will be just fine, it's justine who has some fences to mend, what with her unsportsmanlike conduct, and accusing others of faking injury.

http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/articles/2003-06-16/200306161055786047309.html

The women's singles have been seeded directly from the world rankings. Defending champion Serena Williams is number one, followed by the Belgian pair, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne, who contested the Roland Garros final two weeks ago.

Fourth seeding goes to Venus Williams, winner at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001 and defeated by her sister in last year's final. The women's 32 contains nine Americans (though Monica Seles is absent because of a foot injury) and six Russians.

The Williams sisters, holders of the doubles title, are seeded third, with top place going to the number one ranked team of Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascal and Argentina's Paola Suarez.

The top men's doubles seeds are Mahesh Bhupathi of India and Max Mirnyi of Belarus.

This means that Venus actually is ranked correctly and Kim is ranked one place above no.1

I'm very smart you know
