View Full Version : Tell ESPN you appreciate their coverage

I don't care whether you like their commentators or not. That's not the issue, here.

All day Sunday the 22nd and throughout the morning of Monday the 23rd -- in the hours leading up to Wimbledon -- ESPN Classic is showing 22 hours of classic Wimbledon footage and other tennis-related programs.

After that, ESPN is devoting over 100 hours of coverage to this year's Wimbledon. In the early rounds, they are broadcasting about 12 hours per day.

Networks respond to positive mail as well as negative, perhaps more so. If you want ESPN to continue showing truckloads of tennis coverage during slams, send them a thank-you note (http://espn.go.com/sitetools/s/contact/espntv.html) and tell them you're watching their network because of their tennis coverage.

Nothing means more to a business than hearing its customers say things which target its pocketbook, and networks need viewers to make money. If they hear that people are watching because they're showing tennis, you have a chance of making it happen more often in the future.

u have a point, but they do get paid... and after wimby it will be poor again, so 2 weeks to get us tennis fans rid off for the year. Yes, it is very cool they show that much, but will it ACTUALLY BE LIVE? ESPN to show live tennis matches?! yeah right! plus, they are going to show ander and andy a lot, and not a lot of women till the later stages, the querters and on. but they do show the likes of spadea todd, mardy, dent, but not the other women, who happen to maybe be ranked higher. They suck anyways.
I won't be able to watch wimby anyways, so no matter to me, but happy for the rest of the wta to view lots of crap ESPN ;)

Perhaps. But my point simply is that if ESPN only gets negative feedback, or no feedback at all, they may shrug their shoulders and say, "Well, we won't bother doing that again," and go back to six-hour-a-day coverage (or less) in the future. And then everyone will start 30 threads about how little ESPN shows, forgetting that they had the chance to show some support when the coverage was better but missed it.

Ah, but it's quality that counts, not quantity. If ESPN's coverage includes plenty of live matches featuring (gasp!) some non-American players on either the women's or men's side, then you can feel entitled to acclaim their coverage.

The point is, people are selling themselves short with this whole "it's better than nothing" attitude. True, it may be better than nothing, but it's also worse than most. Letting them know that you enjoy their coverage will just give them the green light to continue in exactly the same mediocre vein, whereas letting them know what their faults are BUT also suggesting improvements that could be made will at least point them in the right direction. The key is not to emphasise what's being done badly, but to emphasise what could be done better.

"It's the Agassi/Andy show! With your hosts, Patrick McEnroe and Jim Courier. Sit back, relax, and enjoy these taped matches of our top American players as we show them over, and over and over."

No way will I acclaim ESPN for their Wimbly coverage. I plan to do a day-by-day critique of their coverage. If any of it is live (before the semis), I think I'd have a heart attack :)

I love how ppl complain so much about non-amercians getting shown so much on ESPN but hello its an american cable company who has to cartier to its audience who also happens to be american. I wish ESPN would show more live matches and perhaps some of the lesser known players but they have bills to pay and they know that the viewing audience will only watch players they know something about ...

Maybe, just maybe, the viewing audience would know something about these foreign players if ESPN deigned to show them once in a while. The bottom line is, this is a Grand Slam event - it deserves coverage of the best tennis being played, no matter what the nationality of the participants.
