View Full Version : Will the media turn their back on AnnaK if MariaS continues to rise ?

Germany´s BILD newspaper, famous for promoting Anna even in difficult times, sort of changed their headlines this week promoting the "new" Anna with daily stories though a British grass court event with no German player in it is a "no story"

It´s interesting to guess what this might mean for Anna´s wildcard-future and her support from tournament directors if Maria climbs the rankings. There are only 3 wildcards in the bigger events and ONE THING is for sure: The AnnaK-"beauty"-wildcard is just for ONE player as the other WC are always given for achievements in sports rather than in promotion. I wonder if there are difficult times to come for Anna apart from her injuries. Are there more beauty players that now even show success in sports ? What if she wins Birmingham ? Is she the first Russian "Anna" then WITH a title and puts AnnaK to 2nd page ?

Anna K. is the original tennis sexpot. I can't speak for the Bild, but the British tabloids never gave a damn about her tennis; she is one of their favorite pin-up girls no matter if or how she plays. They featured photos her even when she was out injured for 8 months.

True, on general Sports sites on the internet, I notice that many of the "Anna Photo Galleries" that used to be a prominet feature of the Tennis page are now gone. So in some sense her star is on the wane. But I will be shocked if "Maria Photo Galleries" suddenly take their place, UNLESS she markets herself as a sex kitten, with Bikini calendars, suggestive poses in magazines, etc.

As for the tourament directors, believe me, as long as Anna keeps selling tickets, they will eagerly offer WCs to her.

I don't think she will, the same was said about Hantuchova who was supposedly prettier than Anna, but most people still prefer Anna, I've never heard one person call Daniela the tennis babe.
Oh and Maria ain't even that pretty, in my opinion.

I think it' s impossible to compare the 16 year old Maria with Anna who is a mature 22 year old...
She may not be as pretty as the anna we know now, but I think she is as pretty as the Anna from 6 years ago. Give her some years, she 's still such a young girl

Anna at 16 years old was still prettier than Maria now, at least in my opinion...

I don't know about the media losing interest in Anna, co I don't think you have to actually do anything to be a celebrity (which is all Anna is these days). But I have been surprised by the amount of coverage the DFS and Maria have been getting this week from the tabloids.

Well, I agree. But that's just a matter of taste huh... Hear me out: the specialist in beautiful women  :)
It's ok if you compare her with Anna back then, and you find Anna prettier, that's fair ;)

But I don't think the topic of the thread is "which girl is prettier", but rather, what will the media do, and the tournament directors.

I think that no matter how popular Maria, Daniela, Ashley Harkleroad, or any other "New Anna" become, or how well they play, Anna will continue to be a big tabloid favorite.

for example, last year, Anna lost in the first round at Wimbledon, and the Brit tabloids supposedly turned their attention to Daniela. BUT, every article I saw about Daniela ALSO contained pictures of Anna and constant references to her! Like it or not, there is only ONE Anna Kournikova, and she will always sell papers -- and tickets.

the media can drop people like a hot potato though and that can go really quick :o

But irma, Anna can always stay in the news. With her celebrity boyfriend, she can stay in the limelight as long as she wishes to, even if she never hits another tennis ball.

Let me try a little CKB style "market analysis". In the late 90's when her image was developed:
Anna was seen as a surefire winner, inc. probably Slams, hence the, er, "fig leaf" of "this chick's got game"!
This was B4 there was a whole squadron of Russian contenders.
The dominant singles player was her dubs partner. (The "rivalry within" was legendary, as Marti wanted the recognition as a beauty Anna had, and Anna the titles Marti had).
Then the W/S supplanted Marti as dominant on-court, but were mainly marketed in an off-court sense to a black audience. (Still are, one thing I'm sure Venus will seek to change as a fashion exec). Now as Anna for whatever combination of mental and physical reasons fades as an athlete, there's huge diversity in on-court success from the W/S to the Belgians, Jen's 3 Slams in '01 and '02, the Dani craze that 10 kg could revive, the "New Russians", etc., etc. So the game may be ready to "ova-come" Anna leaving if she has to. For Sharky's sake, I hope she chooses another "business model" re. glamour work, ala Babsi (or "Marie" Pierce).

they've been playing this new anna game for a while. this isnt the first time the press has referred to maria as the new anna.

this IS about looks. maria doesnt have the lil girl face that anna has, nor does she have the nice thighs and round ass. give it two months top and maria will be retired as the new anna and some other blonde will get the title.

...and as soon as anna is playing again, shell get the attention shes received for years.

I dont think Maria is very pretty and has nothing in common with Anna, but if people are going to make the association then i think she will become the new Anna. If Anna keeps playing like she has been and continues to slide in the rankings the tournaments will not be justified if they keep giving her WC's and she continues to lose in the first round. They'll be looking for someone as marketable who will stay in the tournament longer, so they'd go for Maria or someone else like that.

I don't say anything for the topic question but I really hope that media won't ruin Masha was they did with Dani.

i dont blame the media for danis problems... they're just doing their job. its the players job whether she wants to accept the title of tennis sex goddess or focus completely on tennis. dani seemed to have no problem doing the former. im sure its hard to deny the former... but if one is to accept it, they should be able to handle the pressure.

Really the tournaments will not be justified?? Just how many WC's has she recieved since October last year? It wouldn't be one would it  But of course her slide down the ranking is due to all the first rd defeats?, not the fact that she has hardly played at all, that wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it???

They'll be looking for someone as marketable who will stay in the tournament longer, so they'd go for Maria or someone else like that.

Of course Sharapova has been sticking around past the 1st rd's in all the events she has played on the WTA tour, yeah, what before this event it was 6 1st rd defeats in row, you obviously just forgot about it, else you would have mentioned it in your post

The press is pathetic, why can't they write there articles about the sharaopva's, harkleroads etc etc without comparing them to Anna?, and there Bull Shit about the so called "new Anna" There is only ever going to be one Anna and the sooner they realise that, the better off it will be.

But, DL, isn't Dani far LESS sexy after this excessive weight loss?

The media publicity machine is never going to get suckered again the way they got suckered for Anna K's "beauty image" sales pitch in the mid and late 90s.

There are lots of tennis girls these days prettier than Anna K but they aren't going to make 80 million $$ off their looks. Anna came at exactly the right time (after the end of the iron curtain, but before all the other Russians), with exactly the right marketing strategy.

It's over for Anna now, but she's already got her 80 million and megastar status. Nobody can ever take that away from her.

Sharapova, Harkleroad, Dani H, whatever. It's not just about looks, it's about timing. There won't be another Kournikova-level star in women's tennis for 50 years.

(Dear Dani: Please gain 20 pounds immediately)

i think sharapova will not need the WC´s
i´m sure she is soon high enough to enter without Wc
and then Anna K. can earn the pin-up WC

They're both hot but Anna is going to make 100+ million off her looks and Sharapova will be lucky to make 3 milllion from hers.

It's all in the Timing.
