Nathalie Tauziat, Anke Huber, and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario could all get quite upset on court sometimes.

oh give me a BREAK will ya guys?? the last time capriati "threw a fit and cursed and screamed" more than the usual player was, what, like two YEARs ago? why is it that people just LOVE to talk about that bit about her? is she worse than the average ATP player? threads like these that talk about capriati's supposed former horrendous language junkie persona on court pop up more often than she utters a single profanity, i swear. (no pun intended)

what do you expect her to do? sit down and knit a damn sweater between changeovers? :D

Petrova. I have never seen another player who would be that much owned by her own emotions. Maybe she is learning and improving now, but when I saw her last time at USO against Schnyder, it was really something..

CoryAnnAvants#1
Jun 14th, 2003, 03:10 AM
Hey we're not saying it's a bad thing Capriati has a temper, but she's not exactly calm out there. She'll mutter out a few obscenities after a bad shot. Davenport's the same way. Even Monica blurted out a few last year.

Few more hotheads to add: Aniko Kapros and Barbara Schett

Patty has got by far the most horrific temper of any female player that i've ever watched (she's still my fave though :) ). She often flies into violent, childlike tantrums when losing, swears profusely, smacks balls into the crowd, and probably breaks at least one racket per match. I read that in a match against Dani H, the WTA supervisor came out after Patty lost a point and nailed a ball into the stands, because the umpire wanted to default her. It's funny that you mention the Petrova match from the USO, because i saw that match too and i don't remember Nadya being that upset. I do remember that Patty was unusually calm that night, though!

Second worst temper that i've seen is Poutchek. That girl has got a major league attitude out there! Cussin and bitchin after every point, it's like high school Drama 101. The quality of the tennis isn't great, but i recommend her matches for the entertainment value.

She's not on the tour anymore but one of players I remember for her temper was Irina Spirlea. I remember the first match I saw of her and she flat out started yelling at the crowd, the linespeople, herself...pretty much anyone and everyone. Then, the TV commentator mentioned an interesting tidbit that she could swear in at least 7 different languages!

Rollo
Jun 14th, 2003, 06:02 AM
Spirlea is the worst (or best if you like tempers) in recent memory. She was actually defaulted in 1996 in Palermo for her language and got fined $10,000.

The most hotheaded woman in tennis history was probably patty Hogan in the late 60s and early 70s. Patty loved to scream Mother F**ker! at the top og her lungs.

the only realll time that Capriati gets fired up is when shes losing a match to a top player...ESPEACIALLY against Serena and at one time even more against Martina Hingis...oooh those where the days!...she has broken two raquets that i know of...but capriati doesnt make a habit of it...although she will sauy stuff like "shit" and "fuck" and "damn"...but ive only heared her swear to Serena at the French open in 2002 semis...called her a bitch...i BELIEVE dont quote me though...but i believe i was not the only one who heared her mutter it under her breath!

*Rodionova - anyone seen this girl? aus open qualies one year, she swore quite loudly in english... and after being given code violation, she turned even more sour and tanked the match.

*Poutchek throws her raquet after every point and swears at herself. one of the most consistent 'bad tempers' on tour.

*Schett - gets quite fiery all round. Big Austrian lass, big Austrian temper.

***Worth a mention***

Yeah I don't know about off court but I saw her play Shadisha Robinson in Charleston and she sooo wanted to go off several times but thought better of it because it was a small court and the entire crowd was for Shadisha. She had just won the junior tournament , plus she lived down there and went to high school there so a big group were there and cheering loudly for Shadisha (no one ever booed Evie, hear that french crowd? Anyway I digress). I think Evie held back because she didn't want to turn the crowd from cheering for Shadisha to cheering against her. She still sulked, cursed, and threw her racket several times but you could just see she wanted to do so much more. LOL

Ahh, I was at New Haven watching that match between Dani and Patty and I remember it perfectly, lol. Dani had just hit a drop volley winner against Patty and Patty ran up to the ball and smacked it as hard as she can into the stands. It was like an inch from hitting a woman in the head who actually screamed in fright really loud :o. And then the tournament referee came out and there was a lot of whistleing from the crowd and it was a fiasco :D.

Yeah Janie, trying to forget that one, but thanx :p  I was taking pics during Tara's match against Aniko Kapros (I didn't even have the flash one) and at 30-30, Tara netted a forehand and turns to me and says "Can you NOT take pictures during the match?!" Aniko double faulted the next point and then she turns back to me and says "See, if you hadn't done that I would have won the game, but now it's deuce. Thanks a lot."

Poutchek is pretty bad too. She occasionally yells at her doubles partners :o

I always thought Ballie was a sweet girl (I know shes been mentioned lol), but I was in shock when she was playing Jana Kandarr and she muttered under her breath, "C'mon, f*cking twat."

lOl, Yeah I was there! I watched the whole match! Y'all were pretty loud. It was sweet they way you'll pulled for her. I don't know if you remember but I was the one with the dreds and a funky straw hat, and a camera. I don't think I had the hat on cause the stands are so small and it was standing room only for that match.

Anke Huber was the worst for questioning line calls that I've ever known.

Hingis and Sanchez-vicario second. Capriati of the present players. Navratilove, too.

But they all seemed gracious and professional as soon as the match was over.

Despicable Alexandra Stevenson and her monstrous mother think the whole world is hostile to them, without ever wondering why - because they don't own it.

Perhaps she wouldn't get a mention if she played w/the men, but becuase she's a top female player she's on a lot of peoples list.

I hate to bring up an old thread, but I'm really surprised no-one remembers "Hurricane" Helen Kelesi...

Helen is a legend, as famous for her temper as her tennis. Spirlea comes close, but Helen had a way of making "every" match an emotional rollercoaster for the umpire, the ball boys, the line judges, the opponent, the crowd, the passers-by, her father/coach. Everyone got a piece of her mind, and she didn't express herself with the sort of language reserved for children's fairytale books.

For temper and attitude, Helen Kelesi tops the charts :worship: Just ask Pam Shriver, Manuela Maleeva, Florenica Labat, Rafaella Reggi, Rachel McQuillan, Julie Halard, Jana Novotna, Helena Sukova, Sara Gomer................

For Helen tributes, please visit the Blast from the Past forum. There's a thread dedicated to her

The key question IMO might be "OK, then what"? Some players go to pieces after the adversity that had them cussin' and bitchin'. To Jen's credit she tends to dig in and turn it up a notch.

I'd say Capriati and Petrova.

Capriati once smashed a racket to pieces when she was losing to Justine at Berlin 2002. I've seen very few women do that. After that match she gave Justine a very cold handshake. And when she won in Toronto 2002, she was so kind that she wanted to give kisses to Justine. What a change around. Justine didn't know what happened when Cappy wanted to kiss her :p

Petrova often swears in Russian. In her match against Justine at Rosmalen 2003, she sweared quite a lot. Understandable when you give up a 3-0 lead in the second set after having won the first. But still ...

and oh .. Patty can be quite tempesteous too. I just loved the way that she yelled "SCHEISSE" to the Antwerp public in the semi final of the Diamond games 2003 after having lost to Justine. Wonderful moment :D

Was my pick as well....gets more moody if she is infront....if she is getting killed doesn't bother her. Has the game to get strong results..but her mind will stop her from doing anything decent...IMO

Helen Kelesi as all-time of course...couldn't wait to see her retire LOL Yelling abuse at opponents family etc in the crowd....she'd score a fine for that now...did she ever get fined? If not makes Serena's fine at the AO look like a joke LOL

´
Well, I have to confirm her style. In Berlin during her doubles match she cheered herself few times up with couple of juicy words in Russian, but she was talking to herself. So noone was offended...

I'm not Russian, but I have grown up in mainly Russian environment, so trust, me she knows how to do it with full throttle ;)
