Congrats Masha, great win, I think it will be tough against Asagoe, shes playing well this week. Good Luck Masha :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Elena :fiery:  6-5 second set from 5-1, you had it right there, but hey, I guess thats the way it goes.

Congratulations Maria. Hopefully she has a good draw so that we in the Us can see a few rounds of her playing. Good Luck

Horrible result from flaky Elena! I thought/hoped her flaky days were behind her. Now I'm afraid this loss to a player ranked belwo 100 will shatter her confidence -- AGAIN. :(

Well congrats to young Maria. I hope she will be able to handle what happens next!

And I am thrilled to learn that she has stopped shrieking! Well done. :)

She should be about 90 in the world, give or take a few places, as OstravOFOSDFGOSDSKAYA or however you spell it, Asagoe, and Vento Kabichi are all outside the top 100, and have played well here.

I just did the math, and yeah, you're right. I have her at 411.25 next week, which looks like #87 right now.

Well done. Maria could very well win her first tourney right here.:)

I think she'll do it. Wouldn't that be a trip though if she won her first title? Maria at 16 years would do somthing that Elena just did and yet Anna still has not done.

I think Maria in the long run will have the better wta tour results than Anna and Elena.

Congrats to Maria! :) That was a great win! After being down 2-0 in the third set she ran off 6 games in a row against a very experienced player. That is unbelievable! :bounce:

But why are their venomous feelings toward the Darling One, Elena Dementieva, from the likes of balangurl and Dawn Marie?

I really want her to win this tournament if Eleni doesn't. Those are my top two. This girl is just mowing people down... :bounce:

I can't wait to see her play... hopefully, they'll show her if she faces an American.

So if she is in the top 100, she won't need a wildcard for singles for Wimby right? They use the rankings that come out on Monday.

Definitely wrong.

Commitments are done weeks in advance. She needs a wild card or 25 players ranked ahead of her on this week's rankings to pull out.

Congrats to M. Sharapova for her victory over Dementieva. Seems like she's picked her game up a couple of levels in the past few weeks. Will be interesting to see how she does at Wimbledon!

Personally, I'm glad to see any Russian win (and I don't know why...it's not like I'm Russian or anything. Perhaps because I love the language so much). Mind you, I'm a big fan of Dementieva - but kudos to Sharapova. I just hope this doesn't break Dementieva's confidence level.

What is Sharapova's game, exactly? Someone mentioned that she hits it at least as hard as Davenport, but I cannot fathom that from a 16 year old girl. How's her speed? Her variety? Serve? Volleys?

Well power does come from timing and technique. Think of Tracy Austin and the weight of her shots.

I only agree if Maria goes into the match tired. If she is still fresh, however, I think Asagoe will be on her toes the entire time.

I saw Masha play a year ago at Miami, and have been a fan ever since. She does hit about as hard as Lindsay:eek: ! Her serve is pretty good, her volleys are okay, but she is basically a baseline fiend with alot of speed;) .

Looks like my girl is struggling again.... Being in a position to serve out the match at 6-5 in the 2nd set and lost the match....

Congrats to Masha though!!! It's lovely to see her finally stepping out on the main tour!!! She is the only Russian left in this tourney now... I'm rooting for her to win the title!!! :D

cat you know I like Maria and I never liked Elena. Elena's game is one way and I find her boring to watch for the most part.

I want Masha to show everyone that she is really the #1 Russian out here.:)

I know how you feel about Elena, Dawn. But I thought it was because what she said about Richard Williams at Indian Wells in 2001. I like Elena and feel bad for her because she was beaten by a girl 5 and a half years younger than she is! And that really had to hurt Elena.

And Dawn, Elena is boring to watch? Have you seen the incredible legs on her? ;)

DM, we need to give Maria time to become the #1 Russian. Birmingham is proving to be her coming out party. Truthfully I am very happy she is now winning some matches and beating some good players in the process.

Dawn Marie
Jun 14th, 2003, 04:33 AM
It was never what she stated but that it was not her place to spread something that she had no factual basis on. Oh well they beat her down when it counted.;)

Anyway I think Elena is over-rated by a few. Too pale and pasty looking in her game and legs.

Venus Forever
Jun 14th, 2003, 04:35 AM
Exactly how I feel, Dawn.

I feel like Dementieva's game is just one sided. It's basically based on her forehand, and maybe speed.

I mean, the backhand is average, nothing spectacular. And the serve is atrocious.

the cat
Jun 14th, 2003, 01:12 PM
They beat her down? Well Dawn, for your information Serena has never even beaten Elena! ;)

And Elena has more color than you think! :) She's not that white!

Did you see Elena win Amelaia Island beating Henin and Davenport in the process? Her backhand was a revelation! :D She was ripping them the way Serena does! Unfortunately she suffered a foot injury soon after Amelia Island and hasn't found her top form since Amelia Island.

She's definitely comparable to Lindsay in terms of power - at Junior Wimbledon last year there wasn't much in it, though Lindsay possesses a certain clout which 15-year-old Masha lacked. Obviously I haven't seen Masha since, and this has probably changed. As someone's said, it's less to do with muscle mass - she was a tall girl, but pretty skinny - as with timing and technique.

She's a got a decent serve in terms of power, and she tended to win most of her net points (though, like the Williamses and Davenport, that was more to do with the quality of the approach than the actual volleying skill). Variety - lol, she's a power baseliner. Good tactical awareness for a 15-year-old though, and various reports seem to suggest that intelligence and tactics were how she got back into the Dementieva match.

I've been telling everyone I know since that junior match that Masha will be a future Wimbledon champion, and I'm feeling smug now :D though a little bit sad for Alyona.

Win this thing Masha! :bounce:

Maria does not have as much power as Davenport. She doesnt even have that much power compared to the big power hitters, but maybe thats because of her age. I saw her this year and she really did not hit that hard.
