Justine is making her debut at the Acura in Carlsbad :)

FRENCH OPEN CHAMPION JUSTINE HENIN-HARDENNE AND RUNNER-UP KIM CLIJSTERS
ENTER 2003 ACURA CLASSIC

SAN DIEGO, CA, June 12, 2003 – Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim Clijsters, the two young stars in the first-ever all-Belgian Grand Slam Final at this year’s French Open, have both announced plans to compete at the upcoming Acura Classic, to be held July 26th - August 3rd at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA. At the French Open, Henin-Hardenne became her nation's first-ever Grand Slam champion when she defeated Clijsters in straight sets.

Clijsters and Henin-Hardenne, currently ranked #2 and #3 on the WTA TOUR, have been friends since childhood and have literally taken women’s professional tennis by storm this year. With a combination of aggressive play and skillful strategy, the two Belgians broke the streak of 4 straight Grand Slam all-Williams finals. Over the past year, in fact, they have provided Venus and Serena Williams with their strongest competition on the court.

Henin-Hardenne will be making her San Diego debut at this year’s Acura Classic. Clijsters is returning to La Costa for her third consecutive year. She thrilled fans last year in her three-set quarterfinal loss to eventual Acura Classic Champion Venus Williams in a match considered by many to be the tournament’s most exciting.

Noted Promotion Sports’ Raquel Giscafré: “Immediately after the French Open, our phones began ringing off the hook with fans inquiring if Justine and Kim would be playing in San Diego this year. We’re thrilled to announce that they have both entered the tournament, and we’re looking forward to some very exciting matches.”

For more information and to purchase tickets for the Acura Classic, fans can call the Tournament Box Office at 760/ 438-5683, or visit www.acuraclassic.com.

I hope ESPN sees this press release! They need to be shown that Americans DO want to see the current #2 and #3 players.

I have no doubt that the phones were ringing off the hook, but I don't think Americans were calling in considering the ratings for the women's final were apparently so bad that the Belmont Stakes horse race had better ratings.

So you think people outside of the United States were flooding the Acura phonelines to see if Kim and Justine will play in San Diego??

btw...although I haven't seen the ratings, I don't doubt the Belmont ratings were higher as Funny Cide was going for the Triple Crown.

Yes, because they show tennis on TV more in Europe then they do in the US becasue it is more popular over there. If I am not mistaken, the final is in the morning LA time, so the match will be on in the early evening in Europe.

:fiery: Now that Kim and Justine are nos. 2 & 3, they are "skillful strategists"...??? I guess Venus and Serena are still just all "power". I really find the journalists to be a bunch of asses when it comes to reporting on the Sisters and their accomplishments. :fiery: :fiery:

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm crying "racism"...!!!

You know most in the media try to diminish the accomplishements of V&S. It's just typical.

It's not from the media....it's a press release from the tournament. Always with the victim thing....it gets old.

I don't know about Justine, but this isn't exactly new news for Kim, she has been committed to the tournament for months and plays it every year. BTW- does anyone know what Henin's lead in tournies to the US Open are??

Also thanks for posting the article :)
