View Full Version : Anyone else think that Sharapova's "I may or may not accept the WC" a publicity stunt

Here's Sharky's thread and story on it (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?threadid=74243) but I'm thinking that this is all just a publicity thing to prove once and for all that she is absolutely nothing like Anna Kournikova or whatever. It's my opinion that she fully intends to accept the Wimbledon WC and is using this "I may or may not accept" thing to try and cement her distance from the whole underperforming, yet get a free pass into tournaments Kournikova fiasco. I must say that if it is indeed a publicity stunt, it's a pretty good one that'll only make Anna look worse in tennis people's eyes because she'll be the first one they think of when they hear this.

Does anyone else think this might be a publicity stunt?

I dont know but I think she is great for tennis.

Also the story about her grunting was really funny.

A Seles-Sharapova first round at Wimbledon would be really funny...

Maria should accept the wildcard into the maindraw of Wimbledon. If she snubs The All England Club might just have her play her matches on the outer courts. Way outside.

MR, alot of people are commenting positively on Maria concerning her possibly not accepting the Wimbledon wildcard. But she should be concentrating on her matches and not the wildcard issue. What's there to say? She should say thank you for offering me a wildcard into Wimbledon. I'll take it.

Keep in mind that Sharky's played several Challengers this year, so she dosen't seem preoccupied with glamour (for now anyway). As posted in another thread, the 2 Top 40 wins so far this week earned her the WC anyway, IMO.

I would think it's MUCH more likely that this thread is a publicity stunt by the authur to make Maria look bad on the board.

The press asked her a question & she told them what she was thinking about maybe doing.

“I haven’t decided what I am going to do,” Sharapova said. “I will definitely play Wimbledon but I don’t know if it will be with the wild card or through the qualifying rounds. Of course, I could lose in the qualifying rounds but I might like the extra practice.”

I think the case is if Eastbourne gives a wildcard to Maria Sharapova per her request, she will accept the given Wimbledon wildcard. If not, she will decline and play in the Wimbledon qualies for extra practices....

We will find out the verdict tomorrow.... :) I am ok with both cases. :)

I think Sharky is right, Maria wants more play time on grass. One way or the other.

I think what she means is she knows she won't win Wimbledon this year because she is not strong enough (just 16) but playing the qualies and getting some matches in there might serve her better in future years than losing 6-2, 6-1 in the first round to a Henin or Capriati.

I read that other thread and that's what came to mind. Would have been the same if it were any other player.

It's author by the way.

Since you obviously didn't get it. My point was, it's SO unlikely a "publicity stunt" that your thread was more likely to be one. I didn't think you actually did think that, yet the way you over reacted it makes it look like what I said was right.

& yes, I know it's author, it's called typing fast. In that case anyway. I'm by no means perfect at spelling in english anyway.(Every rule is made to be broken). You're one to talk with the hundreds of spelling mistakes you've made while posting on this site.

Whether it is a stunt or not it sure won me over to her side! I have a lot of respect for players that fight in qualies to get to the main draw!

Find even 10 spelling mistakes of mine in the past 2 months and I'll congratulate you. My spelling's always spot on, mate.

It makes her look like a super cool competitor while making Anna K. look like crap. We all know those 2 don't get along, so it'd be a brilliant move if in fact it is a calculated move.

And you say I'm overreacting?

That's the best you can do, Ms. perfect? :p

Her chief aim is to get direct entry into the US Open. She is not playing before the US Open again after Wimbledon I believe since she is playing World Team Tennis, so if she loses to Dementieva she might need to play qualies at Wimbledon to get those points, rather than risk a 1R draw against Serena and just 2 points.

She has not asked for a wildcard at Eastbourne either, though it sounds like one was offered.

They should give it to Bianke Lamade, to whom I have a fond liking toward.
