DFS Classic: Theft angers Stevenson
By Mark Hodgkinson (Filed: 13/06/2003)

Alexandra Stevenson, whose entire career has been low-rent soap-opera, yesterday announced from a Birmingham car park that, in a bizarre twist of logic, she would never return to the DFS Classic because she had valuables stolen from her hotel room.

The 22-year-old American, who in 1999 became the first woman to go from the Wimbledon qualifying draw through to the semi-finals, said she had been robbed on Wednesday at her Birmingham hotel while she ate dinner in the adjoining room.

"Normally after the French Open we come straight over to England for the grasscourt season, but this is a little too upsetting," said the world No 26, who alleged that passports, £400 in cash, credit cards and insurance documents were missing.

Samantha Stevenson suggested that the thief had targeted her daughter. "They also took our security badges. She was the only tennis player in the hotel. We weren't informed by the tournament that Birmingham is such a dangerous place," she said.

Alexandra, studying philosophy at the University of Colorado, was especially irritated about the loss of her laptop, which contains an essay on Descartes due in on Sunday. "That stuff is hard," she said. Stevenson, who lost in the second round on Wednesday, drove to Eastbourne yesterday.

West Midlands police confirmed last night that they had been called to the hotel and that a woman had been arrested for burglary.

So Birmingham is such a dangerous place because she was robbed there  And the girl is studying philosophy at university.

she didn't make that statement her mother did and her mother's not studying philosophy at the University.

Rocketta, you are crazy! ROFL! Alex, girl, you should always EMAIL yourself a copy of your assignment in case shit happens...

Do they not put shit in the hotel safe? I would never leave my laptop out like that. While she didn't deserve to have her stuff stolen, that was kind of dumb not to take safety precautions, especially when you're away from home. I hope she'll have better luck in Eastbourne, both on and off the court.

I feel genuinely sorry that she lost her stuff ... but if it wasn't even the official hotel, why take it out on the tournament? And didn't she grow up in New York? Isn't that more dangerous than Birmingham (eg the robber have guns!)?

I feel sorry for Alex a lot actually. Its a shame she's too old to be removed from her insane mother and placed with 1. a normal family and 2. a real coach.

Alright, when I saw this article in the Daily Telegraph, I have to
admit I was amused. However, the comments by Alex and her
mom Samantha did much to enforce that feeling. While I would
never wish robbery on anyone, if it had to happen,to whom better?
;) The title WAS a tad ironic. :D ( What's that German expression
that means being happy at another's misfortune--scheudenfruede?
Something like that.) I'm a bitch---I admit it!!

judging by the statement about decartes "that stuff is hard" i would say that she probably didn't know how to do the essay so samantha faked the robbery to get an extension (j/k). i'm surprised they didn't bring up the race card for them being targeted.

It was only some money and a computer. Alex should learn not to cry over spilled milk. Someone obviously needed these things more than she did and stole them.

that's too bad for the Stevensons, and the crime shouldn't be trivialised.

But there's definitely a taste of "bad day at the office, let's lash out" in their comments. Alex lost her opening singles and doubles matches, so I guess she and mother found it one step too far when they discovered the theft.

But no need to blame the DFS Classic, the WTA or the City of Birmingham

Edgbaston is one of the most affluent parts of Birmingham, so this was unfortunate, unless they checked into some dive in Balsall Heath ;)

She'll be back! She cannot afford not to play on grass whenever there's an opportunity, especially because she never wins between March and June

the article on cnnsi is a little different...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/news/2003/06/12/stevenson_robbed_ap/

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) -- Former Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson and her mother say they lost more than US$500 and other valuables in a hotel robbery.

The 22-year-old American was beaten Wednesday in the DFS Classic, a grass-court warmup for Wimbledon.

She and her mother, Samantha, said they believe the robbery took place after they returned to the hotel early Wednesday evening.

"It happened after we got back to the hotel at 7:30 p.m. and found that the room had not been made up," Samantha Stevenson said Thursday.

"The maid then knocked on the door and I could hear the bed being made up as we ate our dinner in the next room. When I walked in later, I was amazed to see the computer gone.

"I think Alexandra was targeted, as she was the only tennis player in the hotel."

They said wallets and credit cards were also taken from their hotel in Birmingham.

The younger Stevenson was upset about not being scheduled on center court at the tournament and complained about playing on the softer outside courts.

"It's a real slap in the face after what has happened here on court," Alexandra Stevenson said. "Next year after the French Open, I think we will go back to San Diego. I don't think we will come here again."

Birmingham is a scrotty place. But the area where the tournament is held - phew! posh! If she'd have stuck with the hotel where the other players were  Bet she only went there cos she's tight with her money.

Anyway, as a near resident of Birmingham, I can vouch that they like to put effort into welcoming their rich international visitors ;)

I'm sorry they were robbed, but neither the theft or her 2nd round loss are the tournament's fault (no matter what court she had to play on).

The "well, some of us were" part explains it all. There is no doubt in my mind that if there is anything concerning Alexandra, the  's will be out making fun of her at all costs, no matter what happened, and it's quite sad.

I am not at all surprised to learn that Alex was upset about what court she was put on. All this girl does is whine.

Of course she does not deserve in any way to be robbed; I am sure that was very upsetting, and it is natural to be angry about that.

But the 2nd article mentions her beef about her court assignment, and it is the constant flow of whines of that nature that turn people against her.

I am so sick of her constant whining -- nothing is EVER right for poor beleagered Alex and her ever-looming Mother. :p
