Who Will win this QF battle?

Is Grass Elena's worst surface? She did get the finals of a grass event last year?

Is Sharapova ready for her first "big" win?

If Maria beat Dechy 6-3 6-2, I can't see why she can't beat Elena.

I am rooting for Elena. Maria already got her two big wins, plus her qualy wins. It's already been a fantastic tournament for her. But Elena needs to step up and re-establish herself as a true contender in any event she enters, and to do that, she's GOT to beat the rookie. Good luck, Elena!

Elena hates grass, but so did Steffi early in her career. Big flat forehands are perfect for grass. Elena will be vulnerable on backhand side though. I think it will really depend on the Elena attitude. If she will be willing to fight hard for this match, her experience should prevail at the end. I just don't see how Masha can be better than Alyona at this point.

I am really looking forward to this match! :bounce: Rooting for the Russians is very stressful! They have underachieved as a group in my eyes. But hope springs eternal in tennis.

I am very pleased my 2 favorite tennis players Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva will be facing off in the Birmingham quarterfinals tomorrow! :D Sharapova is hungrier than Dementieva, playing better than Dementieva and she doesn't carry Elena's baggage from blowing matches and double faults. I think Sharpaova will win 6-4 4-6 6-3.

One thing is for sure. Grunts will be heard! ;)

Well actually Maria had to cutt down on her grunting. ;)

Sharapova stays quiet to post second upset; now meets Dementieva

.c The Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - Russian teenager Maria Sharapova reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinal Thursday, beating 11th-seeded Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian 6-0, 7-5 at the DFS Classic.

And this time, she didn't upset anybody with her grunting.hahahhaa

The 16-year-old Sharapova followed up her straight-set win the previous day over No. 5 seed Nathalie Dechy.

She next faces top-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva, who rallied to beat Marion Bartoli of France 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Sharapova was warned Wednesday to tone down her high-pitched shrieking after complaints from Dechy and players on an adjacent court.

``I had it in my mind that this time I was going to be quiet - and my dad said I played a much better game today,'' Sharapova said.

In other third-round matches, sixth-seeded former champion Lisa Raymond lost to No. 10 seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-2, 6-2, and Japan's Shinobu Asagoe ousted Els Callens of Belgium 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Sharapova overwhelmed Mikaelian in the first set with her strong ground strokes. Sharapova saved four break points at 1-2 in the second set. She hit a backhand winner down the line to earn three break points in the 11th game, converting the second with a deep service return. She served out the match in the next game.

``It's hard to say what level I am playing at, but I can say that it is a level higher than yesterday,'' Sharapova said. ``It's good for me because it's telling me that I am getting stronger and perhaps I can raise my level to that of the top girls.''

::clears throat:: Go Maria! Beat her like she stole something!!

LOL at Mrs_Guga! :D That was a good one, Nwandova!

And that has crossed my mind too, Sharky! ;) Hey, we think alike! :) But I'm sure Elena will play because she knows she would be ridiculed if she withdrew from her match with Maria.

The cat.. Elena has nothing to be afraid of. The only time Masha has faced the player of similar power level, she was blown away. In terms of raw power Alyona is in the league with Williams, rather than with the rest of players. If she doesn't self-destruct, she'll win it handily.

Masha looks like shes in great form, having beaten two seeded players very easily. Elena has struggled more, and has been struggling a lot lately. I think Masha will win in straight sets.

I think that will be a fantastic match . I'm sad that I won't see this battle :( only on scoreboard(lepsze to niż nic :P). I think it will be better if they will meet each other in final but maybe this girl which will go to the semifinal will win tournament . :worship: 4 winner of these match!!

This match should be Elena's to win. Obviously, the pressure is on Elena but I hope she can easily overcome those early jitters and play the kind of game she needs to beat the girl.

But then, I wouldn't be too suprised if Maria takes this. She's playing confident and plays well on grass.

Jun 13th, 2003, 11:39 AM
ys, you think Elena is in the same power league as the Williams sisters? Nyet! ;) She's not even in the same power league as Davenport, Seles and Capriati. And Elena's serves and groundies aren't as heavy as the afmorentioned players. But Elena does have good power there's no question about that. I think Elena's power is similar to Clijsters power.

And ys, you think Elena will win handily. Hmmmm. It's too bad we can't have a wager on that. ;)

I am happy because my 2 favorite players are playing each other for the first time. :) But I will feel sad for the loser of this match. I hope they both play well. But I want Maria to win and continue her winning ways in Birmingham. :D

I was right! Sharapova defeated Dementieva in 3 sets. And she was down 0-2 in the third set and then ran off 6 straight games to win the match. Well done Maria! :bounce:

Elena just didn't want it. Served for it at 6:5, but suddenly decided to leave these little tourney to a youngster. Good decision, Elena. No need to overplay before a Grand Slam.

Well done Masha!!!!!!!!!

TheBoiledEgg
Jun 13th, 2003, 11:01 PM
Masha certainly wanted it more, she ripped into every point from middlfe of 2nd set on, got edgy at 5-3 serving for 1st set.

Masha then lost her next service game too, 1st pt at 5-5 she tried a drive volley from baseline ???? (she could have taken a step or two up and hit it above net but tried a stupid shot which nearly cost her it)
Masha got stronger as match went on as well.
