This thread has certainly been posted before...

Still it would be interesting to post in all interesting quotes related to tennis...( some of you have already funny ones in your signatures...)

from players, commentators, coaches, umpires,...

past or present...

kind, bitchy, clumsy, politically correct or not, cruel, nice, right, wrong...

only making sure they have really been said...

without criticizing...

Only for fun... :bounce:

I start:

"We are so much prettier than the WNBA" - Martina Hingis

"It's only a game and the game isn't me" - Monica Seles

"It was like playing a guy" - Lindsay Davenport about Mauresmo

I'm paraphrasing:

"I knew it was going to be a tough match as soon as I saw the look on Steffi's face when she came out of the locker room. She'd been the French Open champion twice and wanted her title back - but I was determined not to let her."

I love the quote in From Fear To Victory as it illustrates the determination and steely nerves with which Monica fought that '92 Roland Garros epic.

What a champion.

Lindsay on the Williams family at the 2000 Australian Open:"Who knows what's going on with that fanily.Serena's more friendly. At least she can bring herself to say hi. Venus can't-or won't-even speak. Venus likes to give the impression that she's so great, that she's 'Da Bomb,' or whatever. She can say it all she wants but that just means she doesn't have it. She gets psyched out in big matches. She's not happy with her sister winning and the pressure is falling on her."

Lindsay on Serena withdrawing from a Wimbledon match in 1998,"She was getting her ass kicked and she acted like a total wimp."(I'm paraphrasing here!-not the exact quote)

Justine Henin after beating Kournikova at the 2000 US Open,"She likes her look and everybody likes her look. But I am here to play tennis and I think that's most important. I am not here to do cinema."

"The only broad who walks off the court a winner after a Justine Henin-Hardenne match is Justine Henin-Hardenne, and that's me, baby, remember?"

She stole that one from me, but I am glad I could provide her with a good quote.

Some other good ones:

"It's a marriage bed, Lyon. Were you thinking of marriage?" Anne Welles laying on the guilt when Lyon wanted to screw her in her dead mother's house in Lawrenceville after they had been shacking up in New York City for several months.

"To hell with 'em, let 'em droop." Jennifer North, when deciding to go to bed early instead of doing her breast exercises.

"With dignity!" Neely O'Hara after my agent conned her into walking off of one of my shows and breaking her run of the play contract, when it was ME who wanted her fired.

Best Newcomer, Male: Russian teenager Marat Safin is a good bet to overcome the ghosts of Volkov/Medvedev/Kafelnikov and actually live up to his potential.

Thanks for that link Spirit. It's fun to go back and read stuff from a few years ago. Safin hasn't lived up to his potential in tennis but he sure knows a good party when he sees one!!

Irma, why are you upset about that Hingis quote about Federov? He is 10 years older than Anna and started dating her when she was only 15 or so. In America, that's statutory rape!!

Unless I'm reading the quote wrong, Martina meant that Anna looks even younger without makeup.

I think the Sabatini/Graf quote was more along the lines of Sabatini just defeated Graf (I believe in Florida) and Sabatini was at that time on a roll against Steffi having defeated her quite a few times and Sabatini said Steffi wasnt playing like a # 1 player anymore and Steffi replied with "how would she know how a # 1 player plays? Q. Obviously you would prefer to be in the final, but can you look at it and say, "Might be neat to see the Williams sisters" now that you're not there?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No.

(that is a direct quote cause i saved the whole interview for this one line...so blunt...lindsay does give good one liners)

also Tracy Austin and her classic "theres nothing special about her...theres 100 just like her in the states" after playing Steffi Graf in Steffis very first tournament in October 1982... Tracy won 64 60...I dont think Steffi ever forgot that Tracy said that and that line used to come up quite a bit when Tracy was calling Steffis matches and i know she was soooooooo embarrased. I have a picture of Tracy and Steffi shaking hands after that match...its so cute...

"Stern"
28 June 1990
"I won't be able to stand it it anymore, soon"

Steffi Graf, who is just now defending her Wimbledon title, spoke with STERN
writer Harald Wieser about her problems, her predilections, her rage. For
the first time, she confessed how much the campaign by "Bild" against her
father hurt her.

STERN: Stefanie, you have been number one in the world in women's tennis for
three years and were surrounded by the aura of invincibility. Now you have
lost two times in a row to Monica Seles of Yugoslavia at the WTA tournament
in Berlin and at the French Open in Paris. How did these two loses happen?

GRAF: I was so "down" at the time.

STERN: What does "down at the time" mean?

GRAF: I was just distracted and sad.

STERN: Why were you distracted and sad?

GRAF: I really try to always put the blame for losses on myself. But in
Paris and Berlin, I surely didn't lose only against Monica Seles. An
opponent who wasn't on the court at all was wearing me down.

STERN: Does this opponent have a name?

GRAF: The author Heinrich Böll always just called it "the Newspaper." Yeah,
I also lost against the German press in those two finals.

STERN: Do you mean the newspaper "Bild," which devotes its attention to your
father's private life in a kind of division of labor agreement with the
magazines "Quick" and "Bunte"?

GRAF: During the middle of the Berlin tournament, that's when it started. On
the day before, everything was still going so well with me. But then, when I
heard and read that, then I cried. I had one of the tournament's drivers
bring me to a forest, walked around alone for a long time, sat myself down
somewhere, and thought, So now you must rise above it. But when I returned
to the hotel again, I was still so deeply hurt and offended, that I asked
myself, How am I supposed to continue to play in the tournament?

STERN: But you did continue to play in the tournament, and were the winner
again on the court the next few days.

GRAF: Yes, I'm just someone who doesn't throw in the towel so quickly, and
drew on the reserves of my strength of will.

STERN: Were the reserves exhausted in the Berlin final?

GRAF: Monica Seles is a tremendous player, and I would need my best
psychological outlook to fight against her. But that was just it: I couldn't
fight at all like I usually do. Tennis is won with one's head, but my head
was often not at the match at all. After I had still won the first two games
against her, I knocked my shots into the back fence in the next three games.
I just couldn't play anymore. Some spectators tried to cheer me up. But I
didn't dare look at them at all, because I always had to think: They've read
those voyeur-stories in the newspaper, too.

STERN: In the final of Paris, at the end of the first set, something
mysterious happened in view of the usual strengths of your game. In the
tie-break, you lead 5-0 and 6-2 and then still lost it at 6-8.

GRAF: I've been in the tennis circus for seven years now, and something like
that has never before happened to me. Just two minutes before losing that
first set, and the score was 6-2 in the tie-break, I was totally sure I
would pick up the one point more I needed. But then such a paralyzing
uncertainty suddenly came over me as I never before experienced in a match.

STERN: Anxiety is a pain that is triggered by picturing images in one's
head. How should the layman imagine your uncertainty in the final in Paris?
You toss the ball high for the serve, but then you don't see it, instead you
see a huge headline from "Bild"?

GRAF: I haven't experienced that so literally. The uncertainty was there
already before the final, it was gripping me for weeks, however I had tried
to drive it away for the sake of my game. But apparently driving it away
from me was only temporarily successful and it didn't last over the course
of the match. So the uncertainty suddenly came back, and I was incapable of
hitting the ball properly. I did nothing at all to these press people. They
are so very hypocritical when they portray only my father in an unfavorable
light. Only, who can put up with this mean-spiritedness better than I? So in
reality, they get me down, and it annoys me that they can see the
corresponding results of their campaign and yet they still rub their hands
with glee.

I never hated a person before in my life. That's why it hurts me so much to
have to say this: I hate these people. I will never stop hating these people
who want to destroy my family just for the circulation of their newspaper. I
won't be able to stand it anymore, soon. If one only knew how one could
defend oneself against it.

STERN: You are defending yourself right now.

GRAF: Boris Becker told his opinion to these people, too, and in spite of
that, they still always take action against him. So I'm not very optimistic
at all that my sadness interests them. Because if they understood anything
about me, they would have stopped already a long time ago. I fear they are
now doing to me as they did to Boris. But I did speak up once at least.

Incidentally, after the loss in Berlin, I knocked a real hole in the wall of
the changing room for the first time. OK, it wasn't exactly the most sturdy
wall, but just imagine: Bam, a hole in the wall.

It was a total disaster. Remember the Sports Illustrated cover story in 1994? "Is Tennis Dying?" Seles was stabbed, Capriati was getting stoned and shoplifting, Gaby was on the downside. It was like the late '80s again, where tennis became boring without a glamorous star like Monica. Goran Ivanisevic

"When I came in 2001 as a wild card and won [Wimbledon] I said to God, 'Just let me win this and I don't care if I never play tennis again.' I kept asking God to give me one more chance. Probably he heard me and he is thinking, 'What are you doing here? Go home.' It is not so easy to negotiate with the guy upstairs, he is non-negotiable."

Ok here are some cool quotes from Martina Hingis :bounce: :worship:

"What rivalry? I win every time”
A pretty young Martina, asked about the competition between her and other young tennis girls.

Asked about her cooking skills on the long gone Athletes Direct site she said:' I know how to boil an egg'

'When I throw my raquet it helps me concentrate. It's just the way I am. It's better than to keep it inside.'

"I've never had big problems about being long on the court. During the U.S. Open I played three events (singles, doubles, mixed doubles) and some people asked me if I want to stay overnight on the court."

"I wish he had broken both hands" - after Marc Rosset lost the Swiss team the Hopman Cup when he punched an advertising board."

"It`s hard to find a horse " Martina commenting on the down side of indoor tournaments.

After playing the pregnant Tami Jones at the 1997 U.S Open: " I'm going to face two opponents in one time "

" Sometimes when you face Steffi, especially like two years ago, I didn't even want to go to Wimbledon because I saw the draw, first round Steffi. That wasn't very lucky for me. I was like 19 in the world and I had to play her first round, especially you know that on Thursday already. It's like, "Why do I have to practice? I don't even want to go there."

" I'm not a machine " After loosing only her 3rd match of 1997

"Playing one of the Williamses is like playing the three of them at the same time."

"I'm here, I'm ready, and I'm back."

She can be #1 someday, maybe when I'm not playing anymore.
She was referring to Venus Williams here.

Lol i've got the last one from a poster from Hingis.org :

I don't remember which year or which category, but I do remember the quote. It was at the WTA awards, the year Martina won almost every category. She was on stage to present 'newcomer of the year', opened the envelope, and exclaimed in mock horror 'and it's not me'

I miss you Marti
