Since the thread on match points saved went so well I've thought of another-long matches. These should be matches where there were at least 40 games OR where a match went for over 3 hours in time.

This match was a killer! I posted a report on it the Blast From the Past forum.

The longest rally in tournament play was one of 643 times over the net between Vicky Nelson and Jean Hepner at Richmond, VA in October 1984. The 6 hr 22 min match was won by Nelson 6-4 7-6. It concluded with a 1 hr 47 min tiebreak, 13-11, for which one point took 29 minutes.

1984

Nelson d. Hepner 6-4 7-6 (11) Richmond. 6 hr 22min.

And who did the counting ?? Are u sure it wasn't 644 times?

Good thread btw. Just can't think of any matches who will fullfill the criteria right now.

Once we get a good list going I'll add all the ones that fit. Here's the report from that infamous Richmond match. This is from the local Richmond paper, September 25, 1984.

BTW, Nelson-Dunbar said she was so embarrased she apologized to the linesmen after the match! The last line is funny:)

The longest match by John Packett

Tennis it wasn't.
Whatever you call the first round match between Vivki Nelson and Jean Hepner in the $50,000 Ginny of Richmond..., don't refer to it as tennis.

Nelson, the #2 seed, and Hepner may have set the women's game back 50 years with their moonball exhibition of pity-pat tennis. It took 6 hours and 31 minutes to play two-that's right two-sets.

When Hepner hit an overhead inot the net at 11:37 pm, Nelson had secured a 6-4 7-6 (13-11) passage into the second round.
But not before Hepner had 3 set points to send it into a-shudder-third set.

"If they had split sets", said Jean smith, the chair umpire, "I would have removed myself from the match. I would have gone on another 2 and a half hours. .. I felt sorry for them. They were both getting very tired."

The match began at 3:13 pm and was stopped at 7:15 because of poor lighting. After 4 hours it was 6-4 4-4. It was resumed at 9:07 after several Raintree members finished playing on one of the lower courts.

Women tennis officials have called it the longest match in women's history and it is believed to be the second longest of all time. John Mcenroe beat Mats Wilander in a 79 game, 5 set Davis Cup match in 1982 that lasted 6 hours and 39 minutes. It's for certain the longest straight sets match in history.

They had played a long match at the French Open which took 2 1/2 hours. In their match Monday there would be long periods where the two of them would do nothing more than return moonballs well over the net. Whenever one player came to the net to force the end of thepoint the handful of spectators cheered.

There was one point in th tiebreaker that lasted 29 minutes
and the ball traveled over the net 643 times. The tiebreak lasted 1 hr 47 minutes. It took 2 hrs and 29 minutes to play the last 5 games.

Spectators would leave the match to get a drink or something to eat..and the point would still be going on when they returned.

At 11-10 in the tiebreak Nelson went up for an overhead, hit the ball into the net and fell to the court in agony with cramps in both legs. But she was able to walk ir off, and play continued. Hepner sent a forehand into the net and gagged an overhead to end it.

Nelson, ranked 73, said. "There was a lot of pain. I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to finish. That's why the lst 2 points were so quick. I hit two drop shots in a row to win the match. I couldn't stay out there much longer."

Nelson had lost to Hepner in the 1983 French Open and was determined to beat her this time. "I was much more inpatient i theother match"[which took 2 1/2 hours].

The same linesmen did the match with Smith, who said whe was going to change her nickname from "3 set Smith" to "6 hour Smith".

This match was six minutes shy of 3 hours, but long and grueling nevertheless. Meilen Tu def. Bethanie Mattek in 2 hours 54 minutes in the first round of Key Biscayne this year, 6-1, 6-7, 7-6. From Tennisinfo.com -

But the score is only part of the story of this incredible match. Tu began suffering from cramps at the end of the second set after losing a tie-break. Almost from the beginning of the match, the relentless and powerful ground strokes of Mattek had kept the much smaller Tu racing around the court chasing balls from corner to corner. The 90 degree heat and the relentless sun shining from a cloudless sky inevitably took its toll. The pain that Tu was suffering became obviously worse as the match progressed. It was clearly hindering her ability to move and serve and it seemed as though she would retire at any minute. But she fought valiantly through the pain and somehow managed to keep going - even though Mattek won 5 of the first 6 games of the third set to lead 5-1. But even though the cramps became worse, Tu kept getting up from her chair for the next game. Mattek clearly expected to win and seemed surprised that Tu kept playing. This over-confidence on the part of Mattek led to a noticeable weakening of her game and a succession of errors that, remarkably, allowed Tu to fight her way back into the match. Tu won the next 2 games to make it 5-3 and, finally, Mattek realized that she had to maintain the pressure on her injured but mentally-tough opponent. The next 2 games were won by Tu after Mattek seemed to go to the other extreme and tried to hit pounding winners that consistently went wide or deep. With the score at 5 games all, and Mattek serving, Mattek did not win a point in her service game and it seemed as though a miracle was going to occur for Tu whose face now reflected her suffering after every single point. But serving for the match was a task that was altogether too much for her and, barely able to stand, she served a succession of double faults that allowed Mattek to win the game and force a tie-break at 6 all. Although each point of the tie-break was a monumental effort for Tu, she kept neck-and-neck with Mattek until, at 4 all, the unbelievable happened and Tu won the next 3 points to win the set and the match.
After the match, Tu sat for a minute or so in obvious severe pain and then collapsed. She was treated on the court to reduce her body temperature by the trainer and tournament doctor before being taken from the stadium on a stretcher for more extensive treatment. She later made a full recovery.

We have intended to take an opportunity of introducing you to the technicalities of the chair umpire's score card. This seems a good time so that you can track this remarkable match point by point. If you like this feature, let us know and we will bring you more score cards in the future for exceptional matches.

It is important here to remember:

1. the introduction of tie-breaks substantially shortened the time of matches;

2. the introduction of the 90 second changeover (for TV, not tennis) also has a direct bearing on time of match.

Long Matches

Since the start of the game long matches have captured the imagination of the tennis public. Here we will post matches that are more than 40 games OR lasted more than 3 hours in time.

Note: times are often approximate. Est=estimated time.

I've included mixed matches of more than 60 games.
*=mps saved by winner. See match points thread.

She saved a mp doing it. It was the second longest match of the year.

Some points in the Nelson match lasted nearly 20 minutes! Fans who left for a snack or the bathroom sometimes returned to find the same point being played

Nelson said she moonballed back because in an earlier match at the French she lost by being impatient. That match only took 2 1/2 hours:)

6 hr 22min.

That is still the longest match in history right? I still remember to this day reading the quote about the umpire stating she would have had to remove herself had it gone a third set.
