a very good win, she has now beaten 2 very good quality players in this tournament and will next go up against dementieva or bartoli so she has a chance in that match.

the best thing is she has won all her matches in this event (including qualifying matches) in straight sets.

But she needed to be close to 100, 4 weeks ago, to get Direct entry into Wimbledon, it is to late now for her to get DE, unless she is given a WC, wasn't there talk about her getting one? Don't think they have been released yet though?

I am pleasantly surprised that Maria is playing so well. It's as if something has clicked in her head. After not winning a WTA Tour match all year she has now won 3 in a row! :) Perhaps the good memories from playing well on the grass courts last year in the juniors has given Maria the confidence to play well on grass courts this year.

I was worried that the grunting controversy would hurt her in this match. But it didn't shake her up at all.

I hope she plays Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals. That would be a very interesting match. And Elena would be under alot of pressure in that match to not lose to a 16 year old compatriot.

Udachi Maria! :bounce:

I read the same thing in an article, but fact is she shouldn't get one, she has done Jac shit in all the Main Draw events she has played on the WTA tour. In fact her 1st rd win here was her first MD win since Indian Wells 2002. Plus she isn't british either, that's got to count for alot, well in England it does.
Oh well I really don't care if she does or doesn't, I don't have an issue with any player getting a WC to play an event, unlike others who kick up a stink when one other Blonde player gets a WC.

i think being runner up in junior wimbledon last year will play a big part in her getting a WC if she does. i mean if she didn't do so well in the junior event last year but she had this great run then i don't think she would get a WC but doing well in the junior event last year might be a big factor when they decide who to give the WC to.

But isnít it ironic that Vera D., who defeated Maria in the junior final, gets a wc into qualies and Maria gets (if she does) to the main draw??? :p

Great point Gowza about Maria being in the Wimbledon Girls final last year. That will play a role in the decision. As for Vera Douchevina, her ranking isn't nearly as high as Maria's, so she will have to settle for a qualifying wold card. It's obvious the way Sharapova has dominated her opponents in Birmingham that she deserves a maindraw wildcard.

Sharapova run goes on

The Maria Sharapova roadshow continued at the DFS Classic with a 6-0 7-5 win over number 11 seed Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian.

The 16-year-old Russian qualifier made the most of her first appearance on centre court, racing through the first set in just 30 minutes.

Her Swiss opponent, ranked 34th in the world, rallied after a five-minute toilet break  and had three break points at 2-2 in the second set before dropping her serve in the 11th game.

Sharapova produced some stunning forehand winners from the baseline to stay on course for a potential quarter-final showdown with compatriot Elena Dementieva, the top seed.

That's interesting, Just how does a player get 3 bp's when they would have actually been serving when the score was 2-2, if she lost her serve in the 11th game..
Obviously just a typo by the journalist

Sharky, I gather form the roll eyes  that you think the toilet break was strategy on Mikaelian's part. Unfortunately I think Maria is going to have to put up with alot of gamesmanship from her opponents. Especially where her grunting is concerned.

The DFS website is terrible! They don't even let you know who is serving when viewing the scoreboard.

MGM always takes a toilet break when she loses the first set 0-6. ;) And it has been working before. :o

lol so what? If she needs a toilet break to regroup herself and whatnot, there's nothing wrong with that....

Jun 12th, 2003, 04:39 PM
It's called gamemanship, Rtael. I just hope Mikaelian didn't complain about Maria's grunting.

And Rtael, I bet you're much more impressed with Sharapova than you were a couple of days ago!

nothing wrong with taken a bathroom break... especially if it's allowed by the rules.

and you don't know, maybe she has a weak bladder... maybe she really needed to use a bathroom? where is a presumption of innocence? :o

Jun 12th, 2003, 08:21 PM
I saw 2nd set and she was really impressive,
MGM sort of let 1st go after she was 0-3* down, 2nd set was alot tougher and MGM was playing really well, Maria hardly got a point on return until she was at 5-5.
only faced 1 BP in 2nd and held that with a service winner.
She's really going places.
looking ahead to watching tomorrow's match, gonna be 100% behind Alyona though, but if Maria wins gonna be pretty happy for her also.

MGM has a habit of having a toilet break after "tanking" 1st set in 20 mins
