Nine-times Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova will play singles at the Hastings Direct International in Eastbourne next week.
The 46-year-old has requested a singles wild card in order to gain extra practice on grass ahead of playing doubles at Wimbledon.

Navratilova made a singles comeback at the same event last year, eight years after retiring following defeat to Conchita Martinez in the Wimbledon final.

The American defeated Russian Tatiana Panova in the first round before bowing out to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

Navratilova and Alicia Molik reached the second round of the doubles in the DFS Classic in Birmingham on Wednedsaday with victory over Nathalie Dechy and Emilie Loit of France.

"I would have played singles here if I could have got here sooner," she said.

"But I had a broken tooth to get fixed in Paris and I couldn't leave until Saturday.

"I'm trying to get in (to Eastbourne) because it makes me play better for the doubles but it would be too much to play singles at Wimbledon.

"I feel I am hitting the ball as well as I was in the 1980s. I've been playing well. I played really well in Berlin and Rome.

"I should not be playing at 46. I'm not playing as well as I was when I was 26 but I'm playing better than I was at 36."

She wont win the title, but even if she does as well as last year, it'd be an incredible performance.

Everything depends on her draw.
It would be nice to see her win a round.
It would be equally nice to watch her play on of the top players.

The ultimate compromis = Dokic

This is great news! Pity that Eurosport will broadcast only the final rounds of the tournament and I'm not so convinced that Martina can make it through to semis... But I'd love her to smack some of the youngsters out there :hearts:

Conchi vs Martina

As long as it was a repeat of the victor as well that is :p

Martina,
You are a great champion and I respect you immensely. However, I feel that you should leave that wild card for a youngster who really deserves it. You don't need to prove anything to anyone, you are a champion. I admire the fact that, at your age, you still have that competing spirit. No disrespect Martina, but leave that wild card for a promising youngster. Good luck in doubles!

What she can still do at her age is incredible. Defies adjectives, actually.

But still, did anybody think it made women's tennis look kinda bad last year when Navratilova beat Panova, a player half her age and ranked in the top 25? And then almost beat Daniela?

Why did Martina bother to retire?

I guess I just don't understand the "it makes women's tennis look bad" argument. Isn't Martina a woman also?

Is the idea that women's tennis can't be that athletic if 46 year olds can play at a top level?
and yet it used to be in the era of "classic" tennis that great players like Tilden and Segura would play into their 40s.
When Jimmy Connors reached the semis of the US Open at age 39, was that bad for men's tennis?
Obviously Martina trains hard, she's in fantastic shape, and she's still got all her natural talent.

Martina is much older than 39, for one.

All the players you mentioned were still active.

It looks bad for women's tennis when a semi-retired near-menopausal legend can enter a tournament on a flyer and defeat a top 25 singles player and take a set from a top ten player. Kinda blows the lid off anybody saying the game has improved since Martina's time, doesn't it?

JonBcn
Jun 12th, 2003, 12:42 PM
I see what you're saying, and to some extend I'm inclined to agree, but you have to look at it a little more objectively. Martina knows grass better than any player out there. She certainly wouldnt win a round of a clay tournament. Add her style of play, which is also alien to the majority of her opponents, and also the fear factor "Shit, I cant lose to a 46 year old" and I think its not too surprising she can hang with them. Trouble is your average layman/sports critic doesnt think of it like that...

I agree!I like the way MN plays as well but I do wish she would find other things to do with her time....she had her time in the spotlight now its' time to grow-up and get a real job.I also feel she is putting the WTA in an awkward position....alot of these players today are stratejetly challenged and don't have a clue as to how to play on grass.

Jun 12th, 2003, 01:30 PM
Oh, well, these youngsters should be happy to play against the grass queen because WIN or LOSE, they'll sure learn from this encounter.;)

Giving others a chance is pure bullshit because if this player you're talking about really has the potential to make it big, then sooner or later she will realize this with or without Martina.:o

Let Martina have her fun in the sun. Navratilova puts fannies in seats-what's bad about that? I don't get all this "Martina is embarrassing the tour tour" talk. For one thing if she's still good enough to win it's hardly her fault. And she won over Panova on GRASS-we all know hard courts or clay would have been different.

Speaking of grass-Martina must have been smoking something when she said she was hitting the ball as well as she was in the 80s. LOL-for her two decades is like Capraiti saying "I'm hitting the ball as well as I was in 2001".

Now lets pray the draw gods put Martina in Dokic's path so we can have tabloid heaven!

Hi Rollo - I agree. It's great to have Martina playing some singles. If the young ones are good enough they will have plenty of opportunities in their career. And there is SO MUCH money in the sport that they are not being deprived by one legend still playing (and winning). I actually think Martina playing is a TREMENDOUS BOOST for the game. There are so many people keen to watch her live or on TV it's not funny.

So what if the game hasn't improved since Martina's time?
(And of course it has, especially in the depth on the women's side. Also as others have pointed out grass is a special case.)
But even if it hasn't, who cares? There's no objective standard against which the game is being measured. If the matches are competitive and entertaining, that's all the crowd cares about.

I liked Martina when she was a tennis player. And I don't mind seeing her play doubles or mixed doubles. But her novelty act is getting a little old. This is not good news for women's tennis. TC correctly pointed out if Martina Navratilova wins a singles match she will make the present day WTA Tour look bad. And men's tennis would love that.

The assholes who bash the WTA are going to do so regardless of anything that happens. Hell those dickheads bash the top women players on general principles. Who gives a fat rat's ass about them?

People have to get over this notion that you can change a bigot's mind by reasoning with them. It never works. :(

I think it's great that Martina is playing! If I was as good as her, I would want to kick some kids young enough to be my grandchildren's asses too! I don't see why its a big deal that she's playing singles.... If she wants to play, and she's good enough, why not???

Jun 12th, 2003, 05:57 PM
The news report said that she is asking for a wildcard.
There are only two -and four players that want them.

Even Martina said that she is not sure they will give her one.

CoryAnnAvants#1
Jun 12th, 2003, 06:16 PM
Martina even said herself that grass is the only surface in which she has a chance to compete against the top players and that she wouldn't have a chance on hard or clay/

And she's not making the tour look bad! She's not taking away the spotlight from any of the players (most of her RG matches were on the outer courts, albeit the bigger ones), and it's not like she is mentioned in the papers after every doubles win.

If anything this is good for womens tennis. Many bash womens tennis for being filled w/brain dead baseline bashers. With the art of serve and volley back in action thanks to Ms. Navratilova, we'll get to see that fun contrast in styles again. If she wins a few matches at her age, she'll be an inspiration and not a detriment to the tour.

God I have mixed feelings about this...

Dont get me wrong, everyone knows I love Martina and I personally would love to see her matches, but I just think it gives ammunition for the haters to come and and have a go at her..

Im not talking about people who worry about how it makes the tour look if she wins, Im talking about the dickheads that accuse her of not having a life etc.

I guess Id be more upset if Martina let those people influence what she does, so good on her for not doing that...

She has nothing to prove, so she loses her first match, so what??

Not that I know of. Two WCs went to British players, and the third went to Lindsay Davenport, who is the top seed. It is a bit odd though.., I thought that Martina would probably be more loved by a tournaments organisers here than anywhere else.

GermanBoy

I think it`s right to deny Martina the WC. She is a great champion and I like her. She`s done so much for this sport but when a career is over it`s over. I mean, other players like BJK could come back then after these many years off just to ask for a WC and to play that one tournament. It`s a bit ridiculous. I can`t remember who said that the tournaments are there to play Tennis and not to be a circus. I can`t remember the exact word but it was asimilar sentence. He/she is right!

British players? Pffft. This 46 year old could have stomped either of them, but I guess when a country is that desperate for homegrown talent, you have to just keep pumping out the wildcards and hope for the best. Or maybe offer to build Dokic a tennis complex.
