View Full Version : Russian teenager warned for grunting

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) -- Russian teenager Maria Sharapova was ordered to tone down her grunting during her 6-3, 6-2 victory Wednesday over Nathalie Dechy in the second round of the DFS Classic.

Sharapova, who at 16 is one of the game's most promising young players, was warned by tournament officials after Dechy and players on an adjacent court complained about her high-pitched shrieks.

WTA Tour supervisor Donna Kelso and tournament referee Denise Parnell came on the court to ask Sharapova to lower the volume.

Under the sport's ``hindrance'' rule, a player can be penalized a point for excessive grunting.

Sharapova was quieter for a while, but after three points she went back to loud grunting. Dechy then complained to chair umpire Kim Craven.

``It was one of the loudest (grunts) I have heard,'' the French player said. ``But I just played my match and tried not to care about it.''

In other matches, seventh-seeded Alexandra Stevenson of the United States lost 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to Virginie Razzano of France.

Second-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece defeated Meilen Tu of the United States 7-5, 6-1, and No. 3 Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria beat Jane O'Donoghue of Britain 6-2, 6-4.

Sharapova is louder than Monica Seles, who was warned about her grunting at Wimbledon a decade ago.

``It's difficult for me because I have been doing this since I was four,'' the Russian said. ``But I have to think about how I can control it. If you get a complaint you just have to try to make people happy.

``I don't necessarily like it when I watch it on TV, but it is just automatic for me. But it's not going to be a major concern.''

LOL OMG, does she really grunt THAT hard?
Geez, I've heard so many things about her grunts, but I tought it was just like Seles or something, but when adjacent courts start complaining, it's got to be bad... lol

It must be a lot worse than Monica's. After all, Dechy has played Monica 3 times already and you didn't hear anything about complaints, so it's not that Nathalie is over-sensitive.
Yeah, she should lower the volume, but please only after I have seen/heard 'it' on TV. ;)

Yeah, I can't wait to hear it too. :D High-pitched shriek, that does not sound like Monica's grunt! Maybe it sounds more like BRUCE LEE killing someone with kung fu! :D

Funny, I just posted a prediction on Russian Roulette that Wimbledon will have their Grunt-o-meter out again for Maria, and that was before I read this. She's getting pretty famous for this screaming now, and I doubt the top players are going to accept it silently. :D

Her screams sound like someone being tortured, and at Birmingham, you can even her her screaming on centre court, whilst she's playing on an outside court.
In fact, my friend and I were only remarking the other day, (whilst watching a match on another court in Birmingham, and listening to Maria's screams), that it must be annoying not just her opponent, but *all* 7 other players on the 4 outside courts. It really was only a matter of time before complaints started coming.

Funny how everyone thought Jennifer was the reincarnation of The Exorcist for complaining about Monica's grunting at Acura a few years ago, but no one has questioned Dechy and the others complaining. I've heard Sharapova and she's loud, but Monica is equally as loud at times. She is louder when she's more aggressive and that day she was very loud. A lot of people were commenting on it, that she seemed to be almost growling. Why is it natural and okay for Monica, but then people complain about Maria?

Serena screams when she hits the ball! Does that produce more energy?

According to Einstein's famous theory, E=ms², yes.

This theory can be explained as follows:

E: The resulting energy.

m: The muscular mass which the female tennis player thinks she has, rather than what she actually has (although the two might be the same), usually given in pounds.

s: The scream of the female tennis player, usually given in decimals.

So when you take the muscular mass which Serena believes she has, and multiply that by the sound of her screech², you come up with the amount of energy she expends on any given shot.

This formula usually baffles the layman, but as you can see, it really is quite simple.

Well said Willow! :)

This is ridiculous! Maria is finally starting to play some good tennis and now her concentration will be messed up trying to tone down her grunting. I say let the WTA Tour try to default her from matches. It won't happen. As I said this is ridiculous! I don't remember anyone in the juniors complaining about her grunting. Maria needs to concentrate on tennis and not grunting during matches.

the tabloids are brilliant during slams

where else than England would u get the most popular paper saying "nice ace serena!" when showing Serenas backside in the catsuit, or "seen ya Serena!" when showing a shot of down the front of her dress when serving

the headlines are quite witty, and the tongue in cheek humour is totally like me

im sorry, but the fact we dont have a top female player makes us less biased, less arrogant, less ignorant, more appreciative of the talent on offer and more sensitive than countries WITH top players (Belgium, USA and France namely)

grunting helps with power

or so i find....

Not only with power, but also with reach. Big exhale helps to produce a maximum effort, and that's what grunt really is. I was not once surprised that I could return the balls that I thought were completely out of my reach when I tried to reach them with a grunt.

Reports of freak glass shattering is spread world wide

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, Calafornian police were called to investigate a series of mysterious glass shattering throghout stores and malls which in-turn caused a free-for-all looting session.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/1720000/images/_1723711_window300afp.jpg

Officer Mario Estefan was one of the first called to the scene. "This is a huge mystery - the phenominun seems to have spread state-wide".

Over the Atlantic ocean, late afternoon on Wednesday, in the UK midlands, reports broke out of more glass shattering. At the DFS Classic Tennis event in Birmingham, UK which is part of the WTA Tour, every car window screen was shattered.

http://www.adeptsoftware.com/adam/album/FWB%20-%20Earlier/TN_1997-12%20FWB%20Christmas%20-%20Smashed%20window.JPG

One dissapointed fan, who's shattered car wind screen is pictured above said; "I called AutoGlass in the hope that I would have been one of the first to get in touch inorder to get new windscreen, but by time I called I was told I was the 100, 001 st person to call in with this complaint!"

Some stunned drivers in the Birmingham area, were tourtured by an incesant high-pitched screech prior to the car wind screens smashing. Tournament officials believe that the glass-smashing phenominun was caused by the "grunt" of one of the contenders, Maria Sharapova of Russia during her match against French player, Natalie Dechy. WTA Tour supervisor Donna Kelso and tournament referee Denise Parnell had to intervien during the match to politly ask Sharapova to tone it down. "Our very important hospitality attendants, complained of pricey wines ruining their designer outfits when wine glasses shattered into pieces - and we couldn't tolerate that any longer!" said Denise Parnell.

Sharapova's French opponant comented ``It was one of the loudest (grunts) I have heard, but I just played my match and tried not to care about it - although it was hard to ignor the shattering of the glass hospitality louge behind the umpires chair - that did put me off a little!"

However, Sharapova had very little to say on this world wide spread phenominun; ``It's difficult for me because I have been doing this since I was four,'' the Russian said. ``But I have to think about how I can control it. If you get a complaint you just have to try to make people happy."

Sharapova triumped, 6-3, 6-2.

i was on centre court watching Maleeva, but suddenly heard grunting in the distance, that had to be coming from one of the outside courts (at least 200m away and with lots of activity in between  )

So I rush down to see what's going on.

I got there too late - the intervention had already occurred - but I can definitely say that yes, in fairness, Dechy had legitimate reasons to be annoyed. Maria's grunting was exessive and unacceptable. She played well too, and Dechy never really got into her stride, although she played well in the doubles later.

I think it's perfectly legitimate to complain about grunting. If a player is taking too long between points, that's a legitimate reason to complain. If they grunt so loud that the entire tournament site can hear it, the a complaint is okay.

But GO grunters! I love the controversy and needle you put into matchups

Sharapova's shrieks are VERY loud and VERY high pitched. Grunting is one thing, but shrieking and screaming when striking the ball annoys me quite a bit. Sometimes a player will forget to scream and the lull is so very nice.

The funny thing is that sometimes the Serena's scream is the loudest when her shot isn't very hard at all. During the semi at RG she screamed extradorninarly hard when hitting a 78 mph second serve.

The men grunt and moan-groan, but none of them scream when hitting the ball.

The kid was screeching like this since she was 12. When I saw her down in Florida she was loud as well. She doesn't actually grunt though but shrieks.

Anyway, if she was as loud as people claim then maybe she should be told.. but they also can;t expect her to change her oncourt scream either.

Tatree, this is different than the Jennifer scenario. Jen has been playing against Seles for centuries and to suddenly start to complain because she was losing was imho inconsiderate of her.

Janie it sounds imho kinda like Dementieva's but louder and screechier.

Dechy hasn't complained about Monica's grunting because she probably respects her too much. Maria, on the other hand, is a rookie and Nathalie probably feels that she doesn't have to respect her.

But Maria must have one hell of a sore throat if she's grunting as loudly as people say she is. A definite candidate for a Strepsils endorsement contract, I think. ;)

Another really really silly umpire to add to the list. Sure it might be annoying but how does anyone propose to determine what is an allowable grunt. Monica, Elena D, Francesca OK - Maria not OK? We can now wait for someone to challenge Serena's grunt/shrieking just as she looks like getting a winning position or Monica's first round opponent to try and get her defaulted. We could even get a combination with the FO let debate. Serena serves, Serena shrieks, hand goes up, ace passes net, opponent asks for let, opponent claims she was hindered by shriek, Serena serves again, Serena serves into net......could go on all day....
Motto: don't make a ruling you can't enforce fairly.
