Interview with Anjelica de la Courtiere

Q. Are you still on a high from your Roland Garros win?
DLC: Definitely. I don't think that will ever go away.

Q. Anjelica, many people wonder why you have taken the trip here just days after winning Roland Garros. Do you feel fit enough that you won't need a break before Wimbledon?
DLC: This is the last clay court event open to me before next year. So, of course I want to play it since it's on my favorite surface. I do want to do well at Wimbledon, but I do feel that I'm in great shape and I think I can handle playing through that tournament and taking a long rest afterwards.

Q. Most players and critics feel you will win here easily, what do you think about that?
DLC: I think that every event is a fight, and you shouldn't think of anything as a sure thing. Of course I am the favorite here having just won Roland Garros, but there are a lot of potentially tough matches... like Jane Wong in the quarterfinals. I really would love to win here and get another tournament under my belt before we go on to surfaces less favorable to me, but it's not going to be a cakewalk.

Q. Doubles here with Majlana?
DLC: Yes, I approached Mazuelena before the event and asked if she would like to play with me and she agreed. It should be fun to play with someone new.

Q. Thanks Anjelica!
DLC: Thank you.

"I think i have played a very good match. These are my 6th semifinals in my last 8 tournaments, and i am so proud of it. My semifinals at the French Open gave me a lot of confidence and i think i will have a chance against Wong, but it will be tough of course, she just defeated the French champion. Im also glad Anabel and me are in the doubles final" said Carmen Prado.

Taliamanosoko Talks

After not granting any press requests during Roland Garros, the former US Open Winner finally sat down with reporters after her three set win over Caroline Menard.

Q: Ruflina, why did you not talk to us at Roland Garros.

A: Well, I usually don't like to do early round interviews, because we are so busy. But I lost early in all three events and went into a mild depression. I mean, I knew I wasn't going to win the Singles Championships, but I truly wanted the Doubles title. It was what I was aspiring for. Then to lose that - it was just devestating for me.

Q: Are you upset at Jane?

A: Absolutely not! She is the reason why we are so successful and we have won so many titles this year. Without her, we would be nowhere.

Q: It probably upset you that Jane lost realitvely early in all events as well.

A: It did. I mean, her losses affect me just as much as my losses affect her. We depend on each other out there to keep us pumped up.

Q: Losing to Madonika after the Fed Cup controversy must have been saddening to?

A: Yes, I mean, I don't know. I don't really wanna talk about it.

Q: What about de la Courtiere's win?

A: It's good for her. She said she would retire if she didn't win. I guess God wanted her to continue playing.

Q: What about here, so beat Prado and now face Mazuelena Majlana.

A: Well, I don't really focus on the draws like I used to. I'm just out there to play right now. My level is so low, I don't really care actually, so we will just see how it goes.

Q: Why come here and not go straight to Wimbledon like last year?

A: Clay is my best surface and I didn't come to Austria last year, so I wanted to be here again. Simple as that.

Q: Expectations for Wimbledon?

A: Hopefully at least a win in each event. That would be nice.

Q: How's the family coming?

A: Husband, children, and Jane are my rock. They are the ones that keep me stable, otherwise I probably wouldn't be playing.

Q: Retirement talk?

A: (laughter) That's so cliche on the tour now, so I'm not even gonna comment on that. You never know what tomorrow is going to bring, so who knows. I might be playing just one more tournament or I might be playing for 20 more years.

Q: Thanks Ruflina.

A: Thank you.

Interview with Jane Wong

Q: Jane congratulations
A: Yeah it is a great way to finish my clay season, I am pretty thrilled to have won this title with so many great player, including Angelica.

Q: Angelica seems to be pretty bitter at her loss.
A: Well I think she always have high expectations of herself, but I think it doesnot hurt to give her opponent credit sometimes, true she is a great player and she may not ahve played her best but at least she can say a congratulations or something. I mean no one can play perfect everyday right?

Q: You won thefinal two rounds pretrty handily.
A: I think people do not expect me to do well here, becuase of my disappointment in Paris, but I am in good form. Majlana and Carmen are great player, they did not play their best against me, so I am lucky in that sense, but I am happy with my performance

Q: How about doubles?
A: We are dissappointed, but we will bounce back and ready for Wimbledon.

Q: Will you go to London straight away?
A:Yes absolutely, I do not have any tune ups, but I will practice a lot on grass and see it goes from there

Jun 15th, 2003, 06:08 PM
Sabine congrats her friend Jane for winning this tournament!! "I trust in you, Jane. Everybody said Anjelica will win this tournament, but I said you will win, a great vicotry for you!"

Jun 15th, 2003, 06:13 PM
Yes Sabine, I am surprised when you predict me. But thanks for your support, you are great :D

Interview with Mazuelena Majlana

Q. You played so well making it through to the final, but then when there you did not perform why was that??

A. Well you know I have played a lot this week, was on the court longer than anyone else, I played 7 tie-break set and all the others were close like 7-5 or something. I was basically very tired going into the match with Jane. She is a great player and I don't take anything away from her win, but physically I was not there today.

Q. This is the best result of the year so far in singles, does this give u confidence going into the rest of the year.

A. Well you know it would do if we had just started the clay court season, but it is right at the end, now we go onto cow grazing land. So no not really, saying that it was my best result of the year, my first final which was good.

Q So u don't like grass then??

A. Haha what gave u that idea?? no it is not my favorite serface and prefer not to play on it, but with Wimbledon being on that surface I will play.

Q. If you hate the surface why are did you play Surbition??

A. Well did you see my results at Roland Garros?? I was crap and needed match!!

Q thanks for speaking to us today

A. As always the pleasure is mine ;)

Jun 15th, 2003, 09:21 PM
