Wow!! I can't believe it, Paris has finished and Eastbourne is only eight days away  Eight days to go until I get to see Dani for the third time :bounce: Just so that you guys know, I will be there from Monday 16th through to Saturday 21st June and I will be staying in a hotel down there so I won't be on line at all that week (you know what to do if there's any trouble while I'm away).

Anyway, if you have any special requests, please let me know. I've already been asked to give Daniela 100  , and that was just from Moogie alone ;) :D !! But if you have any realistic requests, such as photos of anyone specific, then please let me know. And no Pinky, JCF isn't playing there

OK - so this is a Thank You for being Daniela card, yeh? OK - I can do that. If you want to post any messages for me to add in, I need to have them by Thursday at the latest as I'm going to Hamburg and then Denmark on Friday, back late Sunday and then off to EB Monday morning, so I haven't got much spare time this week.

Have a nice time in Eastbourne Graham. I've been there 3 times. Friends of mine do live there. The park is beautiful. The only problem is that the court is too close to the sea, it can be very windy. But again have a nice time.

Thanks Gert - more likely to be a nice cup of tea :lick: on the seafront for me as I'm not really a drinker! :p

I've also got a card for Daniela. It is all silver and has a lovely b&w pic of two leaping dolphins on the front (I think that's her fave animal) but I just liked the words - it said To love you and be loved by you is like having the sun shine on both sides. Ahh, that was so nice I thought. I'll add in all your messages and good wishes.

I wouldn't worry too much about the loss to Martinez. Don't forget, she's a former Wimbledon champ; the last few years she's been injured quite a bit. While the score was a bit disappointing, there's nothing wrong with DH losing to Martinez. She had a good win over Stevenson-- a good grass-courter-- and, hopefully, she knows this is only a warm-up for the Big Show.

What IS worrisome for DH is her draw at Wimbledon; it's not very kind. Bartoli is no slouch, having had a big win over a top seed at Birmingham the week before Eastbourne. Asagoe, the likely second-round opponent, was runner-up in Birmingham. And Coetzer, the potential third-round match, is dangerous no matter the situation or surface. Should DH reach the QF, she should be very pleased with herself.

I agree. Besides, Daniela always has problems against Martinez. The only time I saw her win against her is at Fed Cup 2002. This is a learning experience. To be honest... I was expecting this.

What IS worrisome for DH is her draw at Wimbledon; it's not very kind. Bartoli is no slouch, having had a big win over a top seed at Birmingham the week before Eastbourne. She is again faced with a pretty tough draw. But IMO I think her chances of getting to at least the 4th round aren't that bad. Bartoli isn't really up there as she is still so young but she did push Mauresmo to three sets at Ordina. Asagoe on the other hand, I dont really see as a threat. For some reason, I feel if Hantuchova can get past Bartoli, she wont be a problem. Coetzer has been sliding, but then she last lost to Martinez, so that makes her and Hantuchova both victims of the same killer. Anyway, should Daniela steady herself and get her shots going 4th Round isn't going to be that hard.

A really nice report of the Stevenson match, among other issues, from Wendy Grossman, who is one of the few on rec.sport.tennis whose opinion and knowledge are above reproach. I don't know how she got to be part of the "press" at Eastbourne, but she's been sitting in with the media. Wendy, if this is copyrighted, I apologize for posting it here. Sorry about the formatting, guys:

"On to the subject of Hantuchova's thinness. I saw her playing here last
year, and thought she had the tiniest ass I'd ever seen. This year, it
actually looks a little curvier to me. But her arms and legs are
genuinely stick-thin. Here's how thin she is. On the first practice
court, I saw a woman in red who was so impossibly thin I thought she was
Hantuchova. She wasn't. I kept going and found an even thinner woman -
and that was Hantuchova. I would have no trouble, I think, closing my
hand around her biceps, which would make her biceps about the size of my
wrist. She looked somewhat discouraged in practice - she was hitting
serves when I saw her, and Sears was I think trying to help her feel
better about them.

"The guy I saw interviewing Bovina yesterday was Brad Faulkner, who travels
about 20 events a year for Tennis Week. He didn't mind my eavesdropping
at all. I filled him in on the game he missed where Stevenson was 40-0 up
on her serve to go up 6-5 in the first set and lost it: Hantuchova
stepped up her game, and if AS choked, it was very subtle. I asked him if
he thought Hantuchova was “scarily thin”. Well, he said, she's definitely
thinner now than when she won Indian Wells last year - he was there. On
the other hand, he believes she's gotten taller since then (which will
thin you out), had very low body fat to begin with, has a very thin body
type, and is an optimist. Otherwise...”it could be the other thing.” A
journalist behind me says into her phone, “She looked bone thin. Like she
could use a good meal.” This journalist sounds like one of those English
females who doesn't mince words; in fact her accent and voice sound
exactly like the team captain at one of my tennis clubs, who is a kindly
but no-nonsense type).

"Still don't know who the thin player in red was, but it could have been
Samantha Reeves, who's quite thin and began the day playing Koulikovskaya.
Three games of that match was enough: I'd have predicted Reeves in
straights.

"Stevenson versus Hantuchova is an interesting match-up on grass. Neither
is having a great year, and although Hantuchova is the higher-ranked (and
more varied) player, Stevenson has a good record on grass, given her
(somewhat lucky) Wimbledon semi in 1999. The match began with the two
trading breaks of serve. Understandably, perhaps: the wind on Centre
Court isn't as bad as the wind on Court 1 (at least for the spectators,
since on Court 1 the wind sweeps through the shaded stands and with
everyone on the opposite turning brilliant red in the sun, the folks on
the shaded stand huddle inside their Polartec fleeces and shiver) but it's
still pretty noticeable, and Hantuchova, who has a very high ball toss,
took a lot of time over her serves, catching the ball, pausing in hopes
the gusts would die down. But Hantuchova is a twitchy player anyway. A
mobile phone rings quietly, and she pauses without looking up, tapping
lightly on the top of her racquet strings until it stops. Stevenson seems
to handle it better, but...seems may be the operative word.

"At 2-3, Hantuchova serving, Stevenson outhits, puts away a tentative
Hantuchova volley, gets a lucky net corde, and benefits from a wide
Hantuchova shot to go up 4-2. Stevenson serving at 4-2 got three easy
points in a row, with a big serve at 30-0 to set up game points. At which
moment, Hantuchova stepped it up, first forcing an error, then passing at
the net, and then outrallying Stevenson, for deuce. A perfect lob set up
a break point, and a double-fault gave the game to Hantuchova. Back at
the chairs, Stevenson dropped her racquet in disgusted - grass is not a
satisfying surface to do this on. At this point, they're fairly evenly
matched - the rallies are more or less evenly paced in that although
Hantuchova's balls seem fizzier Stevenson's seem heavier and more solid.
You have to like Stevenson's one-handed backhand, too. Still, Hantuchova
wins her serve to 15, though someone pushed the pause button her serve
when a mobile phone rings. Stevenson hits shots long at 0-15 and 30-15,
and nets at 40-15. 4-4.

"For the first few points of the next game, Stevenson didn't really need
Hantuchova on court at all. Double-fault, ace, double-fault to 15-30. A
big serve followed by a good putaway for 30-30, then a missed return and a
successful pass give Stevenson 5-4. Stevenson is, of course, not thin,
but she looks in better shape than last year; Hantuchova, waiting to
return serve, looks scarily stick-like, and you don't quite understand why
she doesn't break getting back some of these serves. Serving to save the
set, Hantuchova's first serve bounces in the service box. Her own service
box, well away from the net. Probably the worst serve I've seen from a
pro. Nerves? The second service is OK, but Hantuchova follows it up with
a very long shot. There is a lot of wind now, and Hantuchova catches the
ball before she starts the next serve, but brings Stevenson in, and
Stevenson hits it long. A wide return, a netted volley, and a long return
give Hantuchova the game for 5-5.

"At this point, the line calls go screwy. Hantuchova hits a passing shot
that's called out on the sideline, which DH protests (it's not the first
time she's disagreed with the calls on this particular line), and asks the
umpire, “Are you ever, ever, going to...?” Then on the next point her shot
is called out on the other line. Then she pokes a reply out, and it's
40-0. And then Stevenson hits one long, Hantuchova nails a sideline with
a backhand, and although Stevenson pulls Hantuchova in with a drop shot,
she makes it and passes successfully. Deuce. Hantuchova attacks, forcing
AS further and further back, and then hits a drop shot followed up by a
good volley passer. Game, DH, and AS even more disgusted. Serving for
the set, however, Hantuchova hits one out (just, another of those long
look I can't believe the call points), double-faulted, for 0-30. Then
forced an error from AS, but double-faulted against for 15-40. Stevenson
ought to be a press darling because her mother's “one of us” but in fact
you sense everyone rooting for Hantuchova. A long rally ends with
Hantuchova's pushing up a defensive lob that's too short and that
Stevenson correctly kills. Stevenson really didn't have to do much to
“force” the tiebreaker.

"But at this point she gets wiped out 7-2 in the tiebreak, with Hantuchova
hitting the sidelines and generally playing well.
Hantuchova served to open the second set. Stevenson, serving at 1-0, was
hit with two beautiful lobs. However, the second, played at 15-30, was
clearly - CLEARLY - out. Called good. Passing shot, 1-1. The set,
predictably, went Hantuchova's way in the end.

"Watching them, you'd have to say that Stevenson has more power on the
serve and on groundstrokes - but Hantuchova has more variety and perhaps
more ability to move the ball around and force different angles.

"Virginia Wade was answering questions while everyone waited for
Hantuchova, who likes to take more than half an hour to shower, change,
and apply makeup, and a lot of the questions were inevitably about DH and
some of the other players. Topics included DH's weight, whether modeling
and other off-court distractions ruined Kournikova's career (which she
agrees was largely derailed by injuries), the future of British tennis and
so on.

"A lot of what Wade says about current top players she tempers with noting
that she doesn't really know and she's speculating. At this point we
segue into talking about Hantuchova - a sort of bad move, since she's due
in a few mninutes, and she might be a bit dismayed if she comes in and
finds a clutch of people discussing her body in detail. Wade notes that
there have been plenty of players who really have had eating disorders -
Carling Bassett, for example - but also lots of players who have been
extremely thin. So no one really knows whether DH is anorexic, but
everyone agrees she's underweight. Hantuchova herself says she eats, and
it's a nice problem to have that she can eat whatever she wants. Male
journalist asks, “So you can eat a whole plate of chips [British for
French fries] and nothing happens?” “Yes.” “Would you eat chips?” “No.”
Under pressure, she suggested comparing her heart rate to that of the
other players: “I feel I am fit and strong.” And she thinks she proved
it today in the match against Stevenson, beating a power player "two sizes
bigger than me" (what clothing store does *she* go to?). She seems very
nice and friendly, and smiles a lot; but it's not clear how much she
resents these questions. (Calista Flockhart became very, very hostile
under similar lines of questioning, but to be fair, that was after a lot
more of it and a lot more speculation in the media. For Hantuchova, “the
thin thing” has only just begun.

"The British tennis press seems to be under the impression that Hantuchova
wants to be a model; they've clearly been reading too much of their own
Hantuchova = Kournikova copy (and Wade agrees that the problem with
Kournikova's career was injuries, and talks about what a fantastic player
she was before she broke her thumb here in Eastbourne. “She was never the
same again,” she said.). But Hantuchova makes it clear she wants to be a
tennis player, and says her agent is helping her keep a balance. “Some
things I have to do.” It's interesting: Hantuchova in a press
conference, even with lip gloss, nail polish, and the visor that shields
her eyes, comes across as nice and sweet, but hardly glamorous. On court,
where the average player comes undone with sweat and the dishevelment
that's inevitably when you play an athletic sport, she looks definitely
glamorous - the height, the necklace that sometimes looks like pearls
(it's just white beads), the memory of the little black cocktail dress at
the Australian in 2002, the way she swishes back to the baseline with
those supermodel-broad shoulders dominating proceedings, and little in the
way of grunting to disturb the mystery of what she's thinking."

As to the Hossa rumors, I suspect that they're a figment of someone's imagination (as in someone who wants to pair up Slovakia's most eligible athletes). The British tabs may be next-to-worthless, but they're excellent at scoping out celebrity dish (remember how they were all over the Kournikova-Federov stuff a few years back?) So far they've said nothing about Hossa, and seeing that DH has been the major tennis topic in England this last week, it could hardly be a secret.... ;)

Don't exactly quote me on this-- I could be wrong! :) But I doubt that a top tennis player could date ANYBODY without it being in the British press.

It's kind of sad, actually-- only in pro tennis could a gorgeous 20-year-old woman have spent her life dateless. Maybe a boyfriend would be the best thing for her.

WELCOME to the CP, Paycheck.

As our Asian Rep....we ask that you occasionally scan sites of Asian Newspapers, sports sites, etc for photos of DH that we may not otherwise find....it's always fun when someone posts a recent pic no-one has seen before.

I suspect that there are some Chinese-language sites that may have some tennis coverage (especially next week during Wimbledon) that we may not be able to navigate or find.

SweFan is our resident picture finding expert....he's AMAZING...and we can't figure out how he does it, but he does and we appreciate it...

I try too, and occasionally find 1 or 2 that SweFan hasn't come upon yet.

A few things for me to add here. Firstly, as you all know, I was here all week from Monday morning thru to the final today. I only saw five games in total - both of Dani's singles and doubles and the final. I also saw most of Samantha Reeves :hearts: against Stephanie Foretz on an outside court. The rest of the time I spent with Daniela at the practice courts where she either sparred with Nigel or Chanda. Most sessions were about two hours long and if I remember rightly, she had two sessions on Monday.

Aside from that, I preferred to watch everybody else on the practice courts - access and views were so much better than the main courts and as I was taking lots of photos, this was what was most important to me - you cant beat standing side by side, face to face on a practice court.

To see Daniela on court with Anastasia was also a bonus for me too! :hearts: :hearts:

If I've come away with one slight concern it's this - we've been saying for a long time that clay isn't Dani's best surface and that as soon as she gets on grass we'll see the real Dani. Unfortunately, I don't think that was the case. I know this is only used as a warm up for Wimbledon, but I cant help feeling that Dani should have been in the final today, not Conchita. She had a great chance after Elia beat Davenport, and I think that if Dani had beaten Martinez, she would have beaten Elia too, but that wasn't to be.

But there were some good points too - there should be no concerns whatsoever about Daniela's strength. She had the crowds gasping at times with some of her raking shots to the corners so that part of her game is still there. The serve could do with a bit more ooomph! Even though it was very windy and difficult to serve most of the time, she seemed to lack power in that at times and it was something that always seemed to take a back seat during training. It was like as if it was an after thought to practice some serves while the rest of the two hours were spent on everything else.

Overall, it was a fantastic week for me despite a really dreadful performance against Martinez which was somewhat eradicated by Chandas great performances in the final today and beating Capriati yesterday. I'm looking forward to next year already.

You should all come next year - believe me - it is paradise on earth.

Where else in the world can you sit around on the lawn by the main stand where all the players come and go, take close up pictures of them as they mingle in amongst the crowds, walk beside them, get autographs, stand next to them by the practice courts, see lots of other famous people wandering by, eat strawberries and cream in the champagne garden which was right on the side of the practice court Dani used the most, talk to the players and coaches, watch their TV interviews, :bounce:  :bounce:  :bounce:

When you are with someone you care for so much but have only been able to share time with her through TV, the internet and other tournaments with no access to players to suddenly being so close to her for so long every day, it is very hard to describe that feeling. It really is a dream world and I couldn't have dreamt a better dream if I had tried.

Because I had such a brilliant week here, it is unlikely I will go to Wimbledon now, I will just watch it on TV. On digital TV here, you can choose from dozens of games to watch, so I think that will be my best bet. I don't need any more autographs, I won't get any better photos that those I have just taken, the security is much tighter at W, there is no access to the players (so I've heard) and there is no way I am going to be able to have a better week than this.

See you all at Paradise next year. :wavey:

Sure Graham you'll buy the plane tickets, let me just remind you that I live in Taiwan and I don't accept anything less than first class seats.
I think you'd better start saving money! Man! I'm a spoiled brat!:wavey:
