View Full Version : Anyone think Petrova has a chance against Kim?

I haven't seen Petrova play at all recently, so I find it quite difficult to judge. I think it'll depend on her attitude to an extent - she might just feel happy to have got this far and therefore not put everything into her match with Kim. But, if she's motivated and serves well, I think she's in with a chance of upsetting Kim who hasn't been tested yet except for a very strange first set in the Maleeva match.

I think if she continues her form, she has a great chance to win the whole damn thing!! She will be dangerous for Kimmie. Just like Capriati, she really hasn't been tested, and then Petrova comes along with her missles..... upset in the making

most definitely. she didnt back down against monica, jennifer, or vera. what would make anyone think that kim will be any different. she may not win, but i EXPECT 3 sets...

It's very exciting to think that Nadia can make sure a great comeback and surge in rankings at such a huge event! I am very happy for her and proud of her!! It's tough to be focused and consistent for so many matches and she has shown that she's matured so much on the courts. No more injuries, I hope!

Of course she has a chance against Kim. She has been tested and beat much higher-ranked players than Kim has. But like everything else with tennis, it all depends how these two women will play that day. Odds are highly stacked in Kim's favour. We shall see.

If she can beat Jennifer by playing so good, beating Vera playing good and patient, she has a chance against Kim.

Maybe her nerves can harm her the most!

One has to think that Nadia would be tired. Having played 6 competitive sets altogether the last two matches, surely has to take a toll on her. I mean, Vera and Nadia had 49 hit rallies going on. And Nadia surely can't be fit since she basically came back from a lon g injury.
I'll be rooting for Nadia, she was, and still is one of my favoourite players behind Venus and Serena.
Go beat Kimberaly on Thursday Petrova :)

Kim=Jennifer......Nothing but defense against someone like Nadia on her game. Kim will be ran from corner to corner. The difference in this match compared to the Jennifer match will be the sheer fact that Kim will be getting more balls back then what jennifer did. Nadia has a real good chance here. She has played very well. And I smell an upset. If Nadia pressures kim to play an offensive game, it could cauz Kim to make some errors and not play as well. And if you look at the big picture, and if you have been watching Kim's matches, easy scores, but mainly decided on 1 point each game. Basically Kim has been winning the big points. In this semi there will be a lot of big points. I think Kim will win in three only b/c I don't know if Naida is ready to all of a sudded out of nowhere be a top player and play her first slam final. Nevers will be a very big factor. And I think kim will start off underestimating her and drop the first set. Some might not like this statement. But I think Nadia has this match in her hands. The way she has been playing, if she plays like she did against cappy and vera she is the sure bet winner. But I think again nerves will really call this matches winner.

I don't think so! i predicted that if Kim won the match against Maggie (after the - loss in the 1st), she would win the whole thing! And I really believe she can make my dream come true! Come on Kim, it's up to you now! But we Kim-fans believe in you! Beat Petrova and than maybe a Belgian finale! Oh wouldn't that be great! But I know that if Serena keep playing like this, it will be difficult, but it is possible! COME ON KIM, TAKE THAT FIRST GS-TITLE ! MAKE US BELGIANS PROUD AGAIN!

Anything is possible. As Pam said, Petrova is majorly "in the zone" right now. I've been a fan of hers since seeing her play in the early rounds at La Costa a few years ago. Man, what a serve she had even back then. But then she had all the injuries and was out for a long time. I'm glad she's healthy and putting together this run.

LOL. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Sparky. You do watch tennis, don't you? I said Petrova has a chance. I didn't say it was a fantastic one. BTW, Kim has more skills than "bash to this side, bash to that side".

Very tough match for Kim I think. Which she will not underestimate. Petrova has a chance but if Kim plays well, she should be able to make it to the final.

Petrova has a big chance against kim as if she plays like she did against capriati she might actually beat kim. but watching her against vera she did get a little tight in the second set and beginning of the third and this might stop nadia from getting to the final. but i think kim is favourite to take it so i predict kim in three tight sets.

If she plays the way she has all tournament, she will beat Serena, let alone Kim:eek: . The girl hits so freakin hard, and can actually volley:o . I think she is for real. Not like Bovina or the other Russian basket cases with the talent but not the brains, this girl has it all. Still, can she keep it up long term?.....

Nadia said she gave everything she had to win today...and add in the tough match against Jennifer...and then add in likely nerves at being in a SF in a major for the first time...and Petrova has an uphill battle.

Come on, Kim!

Nadia has a chance. If she will take her chance or not I don't know. She has a very full schedule. She's playing mixed right now and only gets 1 days rest. If Nadia's not too tired and plays without nerves, an upset might occur. Add to the fact I wasn't impressed with Kim today, anything is possible.

I don't know if Nadia is ready for Kim just yet. Kim has been playing very well except for that loss she dropped to maleeva( she came back to win the other two very easily so it doesn't really count.
Kim is also not jen. It was a close match between Jen and petrova and we have all seen jen struggle to close out tough matches. Kim on the other hand will not hesitate. Nerves may play a part for both of them. Kim maybe disadvantaged only because she hasn't had very tough matches but i think this will be the preparation she needs to face either Serena or henin.

At first I did not believe in Petrova, but after seeing her play Capriati like she did I was shocked. She has gotten so much better than she was before.

I think this is an upset waiting to happen, as a matter of fact I would not be suprised if she took the crown. But IMO, it will come down to her fitness. Nadia has had some tough matches, while Kim has skated through alot of opponents who did not stand a chance. Kim has the best setup to win the FO. She will only have to meet a top 10 player in the finals. Now that is a good draw. I think she will win in 3 tough sets due to a little more experience. But IMO Nadia is focused like she does not care about experience or anything. So, while I say it will be Kim winning in 3 I also think it's possible for an upset.

The way she played against Jennifer (her only match that I have seen), she has a chance against Kim, a very good chance. But will nerves and inexperience hamper her, and can she play the way against Kim like she did against Jennifer. Those are the big questions. If so, she could beat Kim.

Hawk
Jun 3rd, 2003, 04:45 PM
It will definatly be a tough match for both. My question with Nadia is will she have enough left to beat Kim? Physically she just played a 3 set match in singles and is currently playing a 3 set match in mixed doubles. However you also have to wonder if she'll have enough mentally to get thru.

Kim is playing a doubles match tomorrow, so who says she won't get tired?

I think Nadia has a very good shot here. She has already taken out two former champions, one of whom is in the top ten, so if she plays Kim like she played her first set, she cna cause the upset. Of couse, Kim is the heavy favorite, but anything can happen.

Nadia is playing mixed doubles today, I think she will run out of gas against Kim but I hope I am wrong.

Well not that it will definatly happen but..Kim/Ai's doubles matches usually consist of them not allowing their opponents more than 2 or 3 games. They are very efficent..so I doubt they'll be on court very long.

That's because they are not facing any type of competition. If the sisters (1999 champion in doubles) were playing them, I bet they would bet tired. They beat Kim and Ai in two tight sets in Australia in January.

What I was trying to say is that when you are not facing any type of competition, obviously you are not going to get tired, regardless of it is singles or doubles because you will most likely win in easy straight sets. I was also saying that if they were to meet the sisters here in doubles, they would have to work for the win, which would mean two tough sets or three hard fougt sets.

Well, not sure about any chance of Petrova, but IMO, she'd like to do better tha a semi. Actually, if she has been consistent enough to beat Monica and Jenny in a Grand Slam event, she obviously could do some damages in Kim's game. All is about her mental, because she definitely has the potential to beat Clijsters, but will she able to do it the day after tomorrow? I'd like so ;)

From Fresh2Flash in Paris
"I like Nadya`s confidence towards the match. "You are not a favourite against Kim. Does it help you?" - was the question. "Why I`m not a favourite? - she simply replied. - We played juniors together, I`ve beaten her many times. So I guess I have a very good chance not only to beat Kim but to win a tournament as well" "

I go along with it :)
go Nadya :) just go for it girl :)

The interesting thing in the Capriati match for me, was that Capriati was very near - if not at - her best. And Petrova still had enough to beat her. Different to the Seles match, where Seles played pretty well, but didn't bring her "A" game. Kim's best is better than Jen's best at the moment, and for Petrova to win she has to play like she did against Monica and Jennifer, while hoping that Kim's a little off.

For Petrova, the pressure was clearly on against Zvonareva, whereas against Kim she can just swing out.

I think Kim has the abilities to wear Petrova down to a point where she starts missing, and ultimately will win it.

Does that sound a little obvious?

jenglisbe

Goal Post - While Jennifer and Kim have similar games in that they play defensively offensive tennis, they are also very different. Jennifer hits flatter (and harder) than Kim, while Kim has more topspin on her shots (which can be an advantage on clay courts). Kim is also more scrappy than Jennifer.

Yes I think she has a good chance if Kim has her patches of making unforced errors (I guess lapses of concentration) like in her match against Conchita that I saw. It's all gonna come down to the big points cuz I know there will not be much separating the two if Nadia continues her great form.
