PARIS (Reuters) - Serena Williams (news - web sites) believes only one person can stop her retaining the French Open (news - web sites) title -- Serena Williams.

The all-conquering American set up a quarter-final clash with home favorite Amelie Mauresmo by beating Japan's Ai Sugiyama in straight sets Sunday.

It is now 20 months since she has lost a match at a grand slam event, her defeat by sister Venus in the final of the 2001 U.S. Open (news - web sites).

"All the matches I have lost I've pretty much beaten myself," said the top seed at Roland Garros, who missed the 2002 Australian Open (news - web sites) through injury but won the French Open, Wimbledon (news - web sites) and U.S. Open that year before taking this year's Australian Open.

"It's been that way for a couple of years now. Whenever I lose it's not because the girl I lost to just played an outstanding match. It's normally because I'm making 80 errors, just not doing the things I need to do."

Top seed Williams was far from at her best in her 7-5 6-3 win over Sugiyama and accepted she would need to improve against Mauresmo.

"I made a lot of errors. I was slightly off today," said Williams, who swept aside Austrian Barbara Schett, 6-0, 6-0, in the previous round.

"I just wasn't hitting the shots the way I was the other day. I was just a little off. But there's no need to worry.

"I'm a little upset with myself and I'm definitely going to try to be more focused in my next round, try some different things and just be more positive as well. But it helps me. It's nice to have a tougher match under your belt."

Williams knows her French opponent will have the backing of a passionate Roland Garros crowd in the last eight, but she is not concerned.

"I'm going to have to play a little bit better than today," the 21-year-old said. "She's playing really well and she's riding on confidence as well.

"She's definitely going to have the crowd on her side and all those factors. But in the end I'm just going to go out there and do my best and really enjoy myself.

"I've played in the most hostile arenas so it definitely won't bother me at all. I played her at home in the indoors earlier this year. I was pumped up then. It definitely gets me motivated, gets me going."

You have to love these "TWEE" little news reports written primarily for American news outlets to pick up on. I do not even visit the WTA site anymore, it has become so pro-American it is sickening. It is getting harder and harder to find balanced reporting on Tennis anymore.

I agree, the WTA site has caught the general American disease I,m afraid - collectively they think the whole world is against them these days. They seem to be a horrible mix of aggression and defence all at the same time. You can see it in a lot of the US posters on these pages and also on the BBC Sport site (the have your say section).

They'll get over it eventually I hope, cos quite frankly their attitude is starting to bore the arse off me.

You were able to find it in the first place?

I hope that Amelie will beat her too, but that has nothing to do with Serena or anything she's said.

Best of luck to both, but
roll mauresmo!

The only problem with Rena's comment was that it was expressed in public. All dominant champions believed that winning or losing was a matter settled on their side of the court. Sure, they recognise that some players have game and can be difficult. But they need to be thoroughly convinced that their best is better.

Rena's sin was a disregard for some bit of unspoken etiquette. If that's what gets you guys going, then fine. But I want Serena's place in history to be closer to those of Navratilova and Graf, than of Sabatini or Davenport.

Good post azinna!

Serena keep speaking your mind. You are not only the world's number one, but also the best player on the tour. Of course your level of play dictates the outcome of your matches. Serena can make twice the number of ue's and still win against all other players, she's that good.

If she can handle the I.W. crowd...the worst in the history of tennis, she can certainly handle this French crowd.

Again Its Only The Fans Of The Other Players That Don't Appreciate Serena's Comments.

Players Agree With Serena
And The Commentators Agree With Serena

Its Only The Fans That Are Having The Problems The Comments Serena Are Saying

I admire the confidence serena has in her game, but there is confidence and arrogance- i am sure if either of us 'normal' people entered a tournament with someone who was contantly saying how he or she was gonna win and it all depended on how they played, and we were just there to make up the numbers, we would get pissed aswell and want to beat them just to shut them up- In my experience Serena is just a typical american- if she thinks she is the best then everyone has to know about it- it can get peoples back's up. However is she keeps up this 'its all me thing', and does keep losing matches people will start asking whats going wrong with her game if "it all depends on how she plays". If she doesnt win the french or wimby, then serena has no one else to blame but herself- in some ways that worse than saying i was beaten fiar and square-- cos then it becomes mental- and mental things are much harder to overcome than say a forehand or serve.

:wavey: Well I'm going to fence-sit on this one. I don't want to get into all the agro that happens in every Williams post (is why I generally avoid them). I guess at the end of the day you can't blame Serena for what anyone else writes about her.

To be honest I do go for the under-dog....but have been that way before the Williams sisters even hit the tour.

At the end of the day...the media have a job to do...I still don't know how half of them sleep at night though IMO. If Serena plays better than the last 7 left she will win....it's as simple as that. If she loses, then physically and mentally she was not as good as her opponent on the day. That is what GS Tennis is...a long haul.

You're right there's confidence and there's arrogance, and you need both if you wanna stay at the top. Remember when Lindsay first got to number one? She was always talking like she didn't earn her spot.."I'm just happy to be here" like she got a last min. invite.

Cappy, got all funky, and couldn't take the heat, started getting all stank on the court and quickly sank.

Venus, thought all she had to do was show up at %70 percent.

Serena relishes her top ranking, and seems happier than a pig in shiznit to be there, and will probably fight like a cornered Lion to stay there.

seems to me like arrogance. Part of being a good tennis player is consistency and not making errors and if she says its only her fault cos shes making errors why doesnt she just get ball back in play. Im sick of her comments its disrespectful to Henin and Mauresmo who respect her very much. Alez Amelie!

I have no problem with Serena speaking her mind. If the other players continue to beat her, then she will have to change her tune in public. If the other players cannot beat her at a Grand Slam, then she is only stating the obvious.

Let the other players use her comments for motivation, if needed. However, I find no problem with her comments.

Her confidence has allowed her to achieve the #1 ranking and win the last 4 Grand Slams. Most champions believe that they control their own destinies on the tennis court.

With that said, I hope the match will be great tomorrow! Go Serena! Go Amelie!

Please stop right there, take a deep breath and realize that when you say "us," you mean WTAworlders in general. "Normal" and "WTAworlders" should NEVER be in the same sentence. NEVER.

Mauresmo says...

"If she plays her best tennis ever with no mistakes, I can't win," Mauresmo said. "But obviously she cannot do that every day all year long, even if she does it very often. I just have to take my chances."

Well according to serena she has never played her best tennis ever, so unless she does for the match tomorrow and never misses then she has a chance to lose.

you see eshell, when we have the proof of players and commentators making comments to back up even what serena is saying about she only beats herself, they avoid the posts and act like they never even happend.

but im going to start a thread of player comments about serena's play.

IMO Tomorrow match will be the key.
Amèlie will be nervous as is her first time she has a real chance for her GS and the public counts with her victory.
Serena has seen last weeks how some players have beaten her so her confidence won't be 100%
The winner will be that who handles better the preasure, but yes itmay be sad to admit it, but if she plays 100% Serena will win the whole thing

Bezza you must be drunk. Because Hingis fans... WELL JUST READ THIS:

All Hingis fans and Anna fans just get the hell out of here. Hypocrites. Funny thing is Serena is only telling the truth about HER game and is not taking cheap shots at her opponents.

You know it is just that Serena is misunderstood.;)
