View Full Version : Petrova is amazing

I just got finished watching the Capriati-Petrova match and I can not believe how well she played. Her serve and volleys are so much better than the other Russians and I think that might set her apart as her career moves forward. I believe that she will beat Zvonareva tomorrow, although I think that Zvonareva might frustrate Nadia a little more tomorrow because she can throw in some junk balls. Still Nadia should win.

Regardless, I'm pulling for Nadia after that performance. (and to get revenge for Vera beating Venus ;) )

She had amazing stats as well. Clearly had more winners than Jen.

I agree ... Petrova was amazing today.
It was a great match (a prop for Jenn even though she didn't win)

Cappy summed it well after the match!

"I think she had a different strategy out there," Capriati said after the two-hour match. "She was not trying to make winners, just hitting her normal, flat shots. I think she added a lot of spin to her balls, so different than in Rome."

Wow Nadia was pretty scary out there today! Now I know why she beat Monica and all her other opponents so handedly! Now there's the matter if she can hold her nerves...

Good luck both now! :wavey:

Nadia surprised moi with her vast improvement. She has made Jenny realized that Jen is stuck to the same level of her play...no improvements whatsoevahhhh.:)

Nadia had incredible depth on her shots. She kept driving Jen back from from the baseline. She also kept finding the sideline. Just "in the zone" as Pam said.

She beat Monica becouse Monica was injured and could barely move. A healthy Monica would beat Petrova even when playing as good as she did vs Capriati.

Does anyone know where Jenns and Petrovas interviews are? They are not on the official site

wertheim and many others feel that Zvonareva is a top ten player and more talented than Petrova. But Nadia was on fire yesterday so the showdown will be interesting.

ye Nadia was amazing; but she looks like a player who can be very inconsistent with her deep groundies... but her power was amazing.

I think Petrova has a good chance of making it to the semis as well.

As long as her shots go in - she's still a bit hit and miss.

I prefer Vera but they good both and have a deiffrent tennis. If they succeed to maintain a good tennis and join the first positions in the ranking is good for tennis and we'll see more good matches.
However I feel so disapointed for Jenny, sehe was playing well but if also playing well she loses to Petrova I think the possibilities to win an other slam r few...she could join the semifinal...

Vera Z. has definitely had the better results; she may be mentally tougher or physically more fit, I can't say. Obviously Nadia doesn't play this way all the time or else she would have better results. But at one point Shriver said that Nadia was playing yesterday like a top 5 player and it was true. Vera got a million balls back yesterday, and was mentally tough enough to win the match, all of which is impressive, but she wasn't controlling the points against Venus, hardly ever, and Nadia was controlling the points against Jen.

Also re: monica. I think Monica would have lost to just about anybody the way she was playing, but obviously, given how Petrova is playing this fortnight, it was a very tough first round.

it is not who controls the point that counts; it is who wins them that does ;)

also jenn LETS her opponent control by hitting BACK to them or to the middle 80% of the time. Venus "controls" the point by mostly hitting away or overpowering the ball and making mistakes!

Vera isn't that mentally tough. Everytime she loses a point she gets so pissed and looks like she is going to cry. That kind of mental state will not get her far in the tennis world.

i saw just over a set of vera's match and i just saw the 2nd half of petrova's match. petrova had a lot of trouble getting to capriati's drop shots and vera may take advantage of this weakness. petrova can get to the ball but when she gets there she isn't balanced and she can't get down to the ball very well. this could be a frear of getting to them based on past injuries (i think she has hurt her ankle a couple of times getting to drop shots). i think petrova is reluctant to get to drop shots. she moves side to side well but vera hits more angles than capriati. if petrova can beat vera then it will show that she is a versitile player who beats more than just the hard hitters.

IMO the pressure is on Nadia to win even though Vera is the seed and the recent conqueror of Venus Williams. Nadia is older and will be looking to assert authority over her younger countrywoman. I'm going for Vera but Nadia is dangerous.

Ha, it's not as bad as this time last year when she WOULD actually cry ;) It shows she's a perfectionist, which is a good thing; it's something she's definitely improving on, too, and it doesn't affect her play as much as it used to.

Nadia is amazing, though... it was just a question of getting the confidence after a breakthrough win against a top player. If it wasn't for the injury, she'd be close to the top 10 - if not in it - right now.

Nadia ia very talented I saw her play before her injury, I was very impressed and became a fan. I was just sad to see Nadia defeat Monica a second time in a row but I'm glad she has become more mentally tougher and I'll be pulling for Nadia to get to the final- though Vera might really frustrate her .

Good luck Nadia!

From what I saw of the third set of Williams-Zvonerova, Venus would hit 5 good shots pushing Vera from side to side, then get the short ball and hit it into the net or long. I'm not trying to take credit away from Vera, I just didn't see anything that could really hurt Nadia if Nadia plays like today.

Vera doesn't have to be aggressive and go for winners to control the points, she just needs to get everything back with depth which she didn't seem to be doing in the part of the match I saw.

I agree Nadia didn't seem to like when Jen mixed it up, so maybe that could hurt her. She might also start making errors. The only time I'd seen Petrova live was in 2000 at the US Open, when she played Bedanova in the first round, and she was not so impressive. So obviously this is a great tournament for her.

better luck..I'm not sure it's a luck question...I mean...all the matches she lost this year r close matches...maybe it's her fault...she plays well but in the important points she's the first to make errors...that's it!
yesterday she she served on 2-1 in the third set and she did a double fault and a stupid error on the net...and she lost an important game...then...the te whole match...it's not luck,it's concentration!

Jeez, no need for such harshness... I was just xpressin' some support for Jen. She played well, all through out the match. Nadia was just too good today. That's it.

I didn't use harsh with you.It was just a reflection about Jen.I'm her supporter and I can't stand she loses these matches against players who plays well as Petrova but r not at her level 'cos I'm sure Jen is better than Petrova and many other players. If only she is more concentrated during her matches!!!

It is frustrating, and I do think overall Jen is a better player than Petrova. However, I think Nadia played out of her mind and was better yesterday than Jenny. Jen played really well, better than I have seen in the last 6 months. I don't think she or her fans should be too worried or disappointed. Her improvements were evident yesterday and the rewards will come soon. I first followed the match online, and was worried about why Jen lost. However, then I saw the tape of it on ESPN, and was not worried or disappointed at all. She played great!

Nadia played great. She was coming into her own before that nasty injury. If it wasn't for that, Nadia might already be in the Top 10 like someone said. Oh and Nadia's a tall girl so it wouldn't be surprising if she had trouble bending down for drop shots.
