What's the name of the player who was down I think it was 0-5 in the second set (after losing the first set) to Sabatini, YEARS AGO... She faced 2 match points against her, and then an hour later she won the match in the 3rd set (after facing another match point against her). I cannot remember her name, but she was this thin blonde girl who used to wear her hair in a long thin poney tail with white sweat bands in the poney tail. Please help

How exactly did the match go? I just remember watching it, and turning the TV off when it was double match point in the second set... When I turned the TV back on an hour later, it was back and forth match points.

Mary Joe Fernandez.... that match was a turning point in Gaby's career
She ended up loosing in the third set 10-8, after 8 match points I think...
Fernandez really fought back..

and 2 years later she lost to an injured kimiko date at the semis in miami after leading 6-1 5-1 too

DJ Jayito - Looks like you're new here - welcome to wtaworld.

You may be interested in the Blast From The Past forum (down near the bottom of the home page/forum jump); there's a thread devoted to Gabi with photos and stuff, lots of other retired players too.

Wow I dont know if I would ever survive after holding a lead like that! I think that would have definitely been the turning point of anyone's career! AMAZING fight back from Mary Joe but Gaby..

Similar situation with Jana and Chanda in 1995..

Except for the fact that Jana still won a Grand Slam after that Roland Garros....

Gaby was killing Mary Joe on court and it read 6-1, 5-1 after just under an hour. Mary Jo (who was my favourite of the time) was so disgusted with herself that she was determined to win a game or two to make it past the hour mark.

A game or two, became 3, 4, etc etc - she saved a bunch of matchpoints and won the set 7-6.

Gaby led again in the third set 5-3 and served for it at 7-6, but Mary Jo just never gave up.. she won in the end 1-6,7-6,10-8. It was amazing!

She was so pumped up for her semi against 2nd seed Aranxta (a player she never did well against) that she killed her on court 6-2, 6-2. Huge first serves and a whole flurry of second shot winners. Arantxa was flattenned.

Mary Joe should have won the final that year against Graf (1993). She won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-2 but led 4-0 with a double break in the final set before choming and winning only won more game... 4-6,6-2,6-4....

Still in my mind the greatest comeback as there was so many twists and turns to the match and she was so out of it at 6-1,5-1...

I know some people rate Rubin's comeback against Novotna at Rold Garros as big - she was 0-5, 0-40 down, but Novotna choked and missed everything after that....

Sabatini still kept hitting winners, but Mary Jo loosened up as she had nothing to lose and attacked everything....
