Serena (1)v. Amelie (5)
H2H: Serena leads 5:1
1999-02-22 Paris Indoor Hardcourt F Serena Williams (USA) 6-2 3-6 7-6(4)
2000-02-14 Hannover Indoor Hardcourt SF Serena Williams (USA) 6-2 6-7(4) 7-6(3)
2002-01-07 Sydney Hardcourt QF Serena Williams (USA) 6-4 7-6(6)
2002-06-24 Wimbledon Grass SF Serena Williams (USA) 6-2 6-1
2003-02-03 Paris Indoor Hardcourt F Serena Williams (USA) 6-3 6-2
2003-05-12 Rome Clay SF Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) 1-6 7-5 6-3

Analysis: Although Serena has historically dominated, Amelie won their only meeting on clay three weeks ago.
However, word from Mary C. is that Amelie is still very tight in the locker-room.
This could be a very good match, if Amelie keeps her nerves under control. Serena will also be reeling from the loss of her sister in the draw.
Pick: Serena in three

Justine (4) v. Chanda (8)
Justine leads 3:2
2000-01-10 Hobart Hardcourt QF Chanda Rubin (USA) 7-5 0-6 6-2
2001-01-08 Canberra Hardcourt QF Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) 6-2 6-4
2001-10-08 Filderstadt Indoor Hardcourt R16 Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) 7-5 3-6 6-3
2002-10-21 Linz Indoor Carpet SF Justine Henin-Hardenne (BEL) 7-6(1) 6-4
2003-03-17 Miami Hardcourt QF Chanda Rubin (USA) 6-3 6-2

Analysis: This is another "silent rivalry" (almost anything with Rubin is). Chanda won their lastest meeting at Miami, but these two have never played on clay. Already both had face hard 3 setters, and Justine will feel the pressure increasing as she goes through the rounds. Can Chanda pull an upset?
Pick: Justine in straights

Nadia v. Vera (22)
The Battle of the Russian Starlets
Analysis:These two have never played each other, but both posted upsets in the 4th rd., beating Jennifer and Venus. I haven't seen Nadia play, but Vera looked very convincing in her win against Venus. I think she has a date with the SFs.
Pick: Vera in three.

Conchita (24) v. Kim (2)
Kim leads 2:1
2000-07-31 San Diego Hardcourt R32 Conchita Martinez (ESP) 6-3 6-4
2000-10-02 Filderstadt Indoor Hardcourt QF Kim Clijsters (BEL) 7-5 7-5
2003-03-03 Indian Wells Hardcourt SF Kim Clijsters (BEL) 6-3 6-2
Analysis: Although they have never played on clay, Kim has won their last two meetings, including a win over Conchita on her winning run of Indian Wells.
Pick: Kim in straights.

I am pretty sure Nadia will get through Vera I think. She has romped past her first 3 rounds, and she actually beat a pretty good Jenn there today

nadia vs vera is a tossup. Nadia is looking tougher but Vera's game might bother her. Vera is clever.

but Nadia will be tough, tough opponent for Kim if both make it to the semis.

I think that Venus' loss is going to actually motivate Serena much more. Also, I think that Serena is also motivated by unfriendly crowds! It sounds strange, but that's what she said in her interview!
However, I agree...it'll probably be a 3-setter for Serena.

For some reason, I think that Chanda will have a good chance against Justine tomorrow!! It should be a very good match nonetheless.

I'm leaning towards Nadia over Vera. Vera is higher ranked and SHOULD win, but Nadia is on fire! She's doing excellent and playing like she's a top 10 player! She may well be on her way to the top (I hope so!).

I think that Kim will beat Conchita, but I think it's going to be a harder fight than most people are predicting. Conchita is good on clay. But Kim is better overall.

Good luck girls!!! :)

Okay, as I said I know nothing about Petrova. Can someone give me a scouting report and a picture? What are her weapons? Has she been truly tested in the tournament?

YES! She has been TRULY tested. She beat Monica in the 1R and then a pretty good playing Jennifer in 4R. She's got it all. She just needs to be consistent at it. If she gains consistency (and no injuries), WATCH OUT WORLD!!! :p

Agreed with your predictions except I think Nadia will beat Vera in three or two close sets. Her serve will be the deciding factor in the match.

Serena will win her match against Amelie because I think Amelie nerves and Serena's desire to win since her sister is no longer in the tournament will be the deciding factor in this match. Plus, I am not impressed with Amelie's service game this tournament.

Justine is ripe for an upset against Chanda on clay, but I don't think it is coming in this tournament, mainly because of Chanda's shaky serve.

I just finished watching the Capriati/Petrova match and considering that Vera got most of her points on Venus' erros and Petrova played a great match against Capriati and at one point was hitting winners left and right, I think Petrova will be in the semifinal.

Many people think Kim will have an easy match against Conchita, but I don't think so. A fact that has been missed when talking about the French Open is that other than Serena and Amelie, Conchita is the only other women's player to not have dropped a set in the tournament and her service games have been solid (I don' thtink she hs been broken as much). Considering that and Kim's service game is just as shaky as Amelie's (and would be out of the tournament tonight also if she were playing a better player), I think Conchita will reach the semifinal.

So I think the semifinals will be:

Serena vs. Justine
Conchita vs. Nadia

I agree! If she serves like she did today she should beat Vera. But I wouldn't count Vera out she is such a fighter.

I hope your predictions come true liz!

I hope so too. Though I am disappointed that Venus lost and will probably fall to nubmer four in the rankings, I posted yesterday that she could be upset if she played like she did in the second round and unfortunately, I was right. I also said that Jennifer and Lindsay could probably be upset today and I was right also. But I saw Kim's match today and I see AO 2003 all over again for her.

Freewoman33

I think Serena will be gunning for Amelie's blood, after Venus' loss. Also, Mauresmo has not faced a formidable opponent yet. Serena will be her first real test. Another thing is that she'll be nervous playing in front of the critical French crowd.

I think Chanda can cause an upset here. This match could go either way, but I'll give Chanda the edge.

I think that Nadia will beat Vera. I agree with the person that said Vera gained a lot of her points off Venus' errors. After seeing Nadia's match against Jennifer, I think she's more likely to go to the finals if she keeps up that level of play.

Kim will tire Conchita out very quickly. I don't care how crafty Conchita is, she will not be able to compete with Kim. After that scare today, Kim will be ready for the crafty Conchita.

I agree with the "Watch for Chanda crowd". I really think anyone in the top half could end up in the Final, or even winning it. But right now Kim is in a great spot.

Yes Nadia has the advantage on Vera with the serve, but Vera has more variety in terms of pace...and she hits more angles than Nadia...it should be an interesting match...I'm sure Nadia will be pumped to make her first semi and to win against her russian compatriot who is younger than her...

I agre with you, but I think that Nadia seems to be more consistent and hits a lot more winners. I will record this one because it should be a great match.

Nadia will get thru.... Nadia has such a HUGE serve...thats her biggest weapon and her groundies are pure power......she tossed jen around like a sack of potatoes...jen had to run and run and run and Vera doesnt have that mobility...Nadia will just outpower and i think cruise past Vera :)

After today I don't think any of us can assume the favoured player will win :)

With that said I think Amelie/Serena is a toss up. Both are playing well, Amelie had the easiet win today, she has to feel very confident. Her attitude is really different this year. As for Serena I think her match with Ai helped her, showed her what she needed to work on, and with Venus gone Serena will be more motivated. She has to ignore the almost certain boos and other crap the crowd will try to pull, and most importantly keep her errors down!

As much as I love Chanda I do not think she can trouble Justine on clay. I was a little upset to see Justine go to 3 sets, she really has to fight her nerves. Chanda should not feel any pressuer and just play!

Vera and Nadia I can't predict at all I did not get to watch either match. Well I choose not to watch either match I'm sure it's obvious why

And I think Kim will be in the semifinals, Martinze can trouble her but not for long.

LucasArg
Jun 1st, 2003, 11:32 PM
I think Serena will beat Amelie in 2 sets. She will be too focused and motivated to defend her title. Amelie's nerves will make her fall apart and Serena will dominate the entire match.

Serena 6-3 6-2

Nadia vs Vera will be a 3 setter, Nadia is probably going to win it, will depend on her serve.

Nadia 7-5 4-6 6-3

Justine is really good on clay, no doubt here for a straight sets win.

Justine 6-2 6-4

After watching Clijsters today, I can say anything can happen. Conchita is very experienced and she is surely motivated to reach a Grand Slam SM again, on the other hand Kim showed she is very consistent, exepting her match with Maggie. So, if Conchita plays well, she can win it in 3.

Conchita 6-2 4-6 6-4

(5) Mauresmo vs. (1) Williams
The hometown crowd will power Amelie to the win in three.
Prediction
(5) Mauresmo def. (1) S. Williams 6-4 3-6 6-3

(8) Rubin vs. (4) Henin-Hardenne
Chanda struggled against a lower ranked Mandula that many believed she would crush. Henin is playing ok but I still would give the advantage to her.
Prediction
(4) Henin-Hardenne def. (8) Rubin 6-2 6-4

Petrova vs. (22) Zvonerava
I really don't get why a lot of you are picking Vera over Nadia? Look at the match stats from both their matches today. Vera had 13 winners to 59 errors. Venus hit 44 winners but 86 errors. In Petrova's match she hit almost 3 times as many winners than Vera, 37, against Jen who gets many many balls back and only hit 7 more errors than Vera. To top that off Vera almost still lost to Venus who gave her 87 of the 100 points she won on unforced errors.
Prediction
Petrova def. (22) Zvonerava 6-2 6-3

(24) Martinez vs. (2) Clijsters
Didn't see Kim play today but the win leaves a slim chance (and I mean slim) for Conchita. Martinez showed variety against an injured Davenport but the shotmaking won't hurt Kim as she will make Conchita run.
Prediction
(2) Clijsters def (24) Martinez 6-3 6-3

OMG, it would so great if Conchita made the SF again of this slam! I even see her going to the final if she gets past this match with Kim! I think it's pretty amazing to see Nadia/Vera in a QF match because no matter which one wins we'll be seeing a Russian in the SF of a grand slam for the first time in a long time! Not to mention their both pretty new up and coming players.

I'm wishing luck to Justine and to Conchita!

Pick: Kim in straights.

As much as I hate to say it, I have a bad feeling that Amelie's gonna upset Serena in three - she's had a really good claycourt season so far (example: 6-1, 6-2 against Serna and bagled Kim 6-0 in the first set at IO).

And I honestly don't believe Kim will beat Conchi in straight sets. Looking back at her match against Maleeva (6-0 in the first set, OMG) and Conchi's handling of Lindsay's power in the 4th makes me think that maybe this'll be the only other 3-setter besides Williams/Maurasemo.

I think if Kim doesn't win her side of the draw, it would be a great shame. Conchita Martinez is a big threat but Kim is playing very well on clay and should make her 2nd GS final but if Venus can fall then so can Kim. I think the top half of the draw has just become very, very competitive. I'm really looking forward to a Justine-Serena showdown but I think it will be a Justine-Amelie.

Did anyone watch the Kim vs Maggie match???? Discount the first set, the second and third sets by Kim were still very disappointing. If she plays like that in the quarters she will lose. The scoreline of 6/2 6/1 is not indicative of her play. She was not in good form at all and will have to improve.

I think the Serena/Mauresmo match is really up in the air. I think a lot depends on Mauresmo's serve and her willingness to attack.

I keep recalling the 2002 Wimbledon. Mauresmo was playing SO well, attacking the net every chance she could get. The result: a semi final. That result: a very, very passive Mauresmo and a red-hot Serena. Match?: 62 61 Serena.

The length of the match is more up to Mauresmo then Serena...which is surprising, I think.

Still, I don't see Serena losing this title. Serena in 2 close sets.
