Watching it on TV, I thought the big turning point was in the 7th game of the Last set.

Venus was up 40-0 and Vera ripped of 3 of the biggest winners you are ever likely to see. The 3rd winner especially as it came after a very tough rally. Even though Venus went on to hold, she was clearly shaken and Vera went on to win the next 3 games and the match. :)

They showed it on BBC, it was so exciting :D The Commentators said of one the points, that was the best point of the tournament so far, if not the best we'll see!!! :D and Vera won that point. Well Done Vera, now make sure that you can do well in the next round against Capriati or Petrova :D :D I'm so happy, I could burst like a blister when you pop it with a pin! well i figured there would be an upset here. Venus should've lost in her last match. Her opponent didn't play that well. You can just tell venus is not venus. again like i said before, she should've skipped the French. Now that she has put even a lil pressure on her stomach strain, her wimbledon hopes (as in going there and actually playing) are up in the air. And if she does go and play, her stomach could very well act up again b/c she played here for no reason. 12 doubles and no aces, that tells me her stomach was definetly hurting, reminds me of the match against Mauresmo. A hell a lot of upsets. Jennifer's ranking is now going to drop. She will now be a solid stuck number 8. And Venus is going to be number 4  But Vera must've played well. It used to be venus could win injured and not able to play well, but these players now come out firing like a muthafucka.

great win again Vera, venus you need to train and heal. You should've again I say skip this damn tournie, and get ready to sweep wimbledon.

That point was unbelivable :D! I thought at least 3 times during that point: she can't get to this, Venus has won; but she not only got to the ball, but hit a fantastic shot of of it - I have never seen something like that; and on top of everything she finished it with a fantastic down-the-line winner!

Vera played amazing, Venus was tentative, but should have won that match, she blew a 0-40 lead, in the third, at 4-3 and that would have been the match!

Im so pleased for Vera, I dont care how hatefull people are going to be about her because she played better on the day regardless of what Venus did. It does not matter if Venus hit 100 winners or 100 Uf if the player beats her the players beats her.

Venus clearly GAVE THIS MATCH AWAY. 82 UEs and 12 DFs!!!! Are you kidding me? The figures are (unfortunately) correct: She gave away 87 points total for the match! Anyone who plays or seriously follows tennis KNOWS that she gave away far too many points to win. Besides Venus had 44 winners and Vera had only 13. C'mon! Congratulations to Vera, she deserves the credit for hanging in there and taking full advantage of the many opportunities she had in order to win but even she knows this was not a true indicator of Venus's capabilities. Which is why Vera wasn't smiling or jumping for joy (as she had every right to) after the match. As for Venus: Please go home, rest, shake off this disappointment, and prepare to win the title at Wimbledon. Since your combined lifetime record against Serena, Kim, Justine, Amelie, Daniela and Jennifer is an outstanding 30-10 and you've already won 4 GS titles, you still have a very strong foundation to continue to build upon. So don't get down on yourself. On to Wimby!

No wait, she tore a muscle, or was it a twisted ankle? hehe! Maybe she just had something stuck in her throat *ahem* :p Can't wait to hear the post-mortem on this one. The excuses from the Williams fans after this total humiliation will be hilarious. I notice one of them (think it was Venus Forever) has already changed her avatar and deserted to the Serena camp. I hope Venus can be fully healed in time for Wimby or her ranking will take a huge hit...

Like I said in another thread..she was giving it away today...and Vera worked hard to take it...she played ball after ball to Vee's FH and waited for the errors...

No matter what, u have to give Vera credit for taking advantage of the huge gifts of errors that Vee was giving her...

Oh please GrahamD, don't flatter yourself. The "Williams Fans" are not a monolith and are not joined at the hip. So calm down, take a valium, and stop deluding yourself with these brazen overgeneralizations and stupid assumptions about people you don't even know. Venus's loss was not anywhere near a "total humiliation" so stop hyperventilating. All she lost was a tennis match. Life will surely go on for her and even the "rest of us" (whoever we may be). In the future please don't try to pretend that everyone who may disagree with you or your point of view are the same or that they are all suffering from what you may ignorantly accuse them of suffering from, LOL...

Before you construct these theories, maybe you should take a look at the facts you are basing it on. Venus did not commit 87 unforced errors. (actually I think the site has it at 86 errors) The Roland Garros site statistics lump forced and unforced errors together. You can easily verify this by doing a little bit of adding/subtracting.

Venus won more points than Vera in this match, but Vera still won the match. Venus had 103 total points with 44 winners. Vera's total errors (forced and unforced) were 59. Add it up. The same goes for Vera's scoreline. She had 13 winners and 99 total points. So you see...

This isn't the first time this tournament that someone has pointed out that the "unforced error" stat is simply WRONG at this tournament. It's been like that for all the matches. The first one I heard laughing at the stat was James Blake in one of his on camera interviews after his match with Taylor Dent.

Vera :bounce: Nice work!

How many of you actually watched this match? Vera played a very mature match. She recognized that Venus's forehand was deserting her and she started directed her serve, her groundstrokes to the devestated wing. That's what you do if you want to win a match. And when she won, there was no huge rush of excitement and display -- I think she had the belief from the start that she could win it, and she did.

Venus is not playing at her 2000/2001 level, but don't take anything away from Vera's performance. She worked for it and earned her berth in the quarterfinals. It wasn't given to her.

Jun 2nd, 2003, 03:32 AM
I watched it live from the ending of the
second set to the very last ball int he third
set.

What I found so satisfying about the win was
the look of absolute fright in the Williams camp.
Let me explain during the Serena vs Ai match when
Ai started to double fault and blow leads the Williams
camped were laughing their heads of. I found that so
rude, and just mean spirited. Anyway seeing those
very same people look on in horror was a sort of
karmic moment.

Thank you Vera.

P.S You outplayed Venus!!! :)

It's just smart tennis to attack the Venus forehand. I'm happy Vera won, but I think she is still far from top 8 material. I think she needs to develop her game a little bit more. I would love to see her in the top 10, though, by the end of the year.

Venus on the otherhand really needs to continue to improve on her forehand. She's got the worse forehand in the top 15. I'm sorry to say it.
