View Full Version : Does Vera have any chance against Venus?

These two have never played before, and Venus's fitness coming into the tournament has been suspect. However, she plowed through Silvia pretty convincingly.

What are your takes on the match?

the way they played today (vs. Farina and Sanchez-Lorenzo), no...

Vera has committed lots of ue, more than Venus, which means there is no way she can win (Venus will hit more winners, I'm sure). Besides, Vera's 1st serve average speed was 134kmh, 2nd - 114kmh.... Venus will kill that serve. (compare with Farina's 144 and 124).

if VERA can beat Venus, then that would mean Karolina could too! But Vera can't, so that point is really null and void ;)

umm...ok. Vera has a chance to win points but not this match and I love the girl!

i really dont wanna jinx venus, but unless vera develops some sort of weapon that is better than venus by tomorrow has then venus will win...

Vera is one of the most improved players right now, Venus needs to be careful 'coz I really wanted a Venus-Jen quarterfinal.

i think vera definitely has a chance because she's beaten top players before and the fact that she hasn't played against venus will make the game even more interesting as both players would try every tactic or stroke that's around to outplay each other...... she can pull off an upset but it will mostly depend on how fit or well venus is playing today..

It's interesting; but I don't think it's actually
about the weapons of Venus, or the lack of
so called weapons of Vera. I see it as more of a mental
battle.

Vera is obviously a solid baseliner, with a very
consistent game, and improving. Venus wouldn't
be impressed nor worried if she see's Vera fold
like a futon within the first 3 games. It's a mental
battle and alot of it depends on how much Vera
can hold up under the spotlight and against the
charisma of Venus. She will have to really give
Venus something to think about other than how
much of a pushover these Eastern European girls
are. Venus's game isn't perfect this week; it's just
been enough to beat the others unlike say Kim or
Serena or even Amelie.

Answer to the question is yes if she isn't timid.
Don't use the Farina match as a barometer of
Vera. Farina doesn't have a big serve, Vera
hits harder ground strokes than she does..
Vera reminds me alot of Kim. I think Vera will get more
games out of it than Farina whatever the final
result.

I think she has chance to win seeing from Vera's results this season she has absolutely imrprove in every way.. Let's just pray that venus won't play like against Evie Amen

I really think Vera has a chance at beating Venus. I would not be suprised if they go on to three sets at the least. But Venus seems to be getting more comfortable playing and she looks to be raising her game level after the Evie match so Vera will need to play cleanly and aggressively and keep a positive attitude against Venus.

Vera's fastest serv is 100 mph and her 2nd serves are Hingis clones. I think Venus at 50% will be able to win this match.

Vera is tougher then she may appear, and has given in form players a run for there money. She has a chance for definate, but I doubt she will win, unless Venus struggles with her abdom problems.

Utadchi Vera!

Does she has a chance?? Well on Any Given Sunday, anything could happen.

But not this Sunday!

Venus has those eyes again.

I think if Venus played like she did in the 2nd round, Vera has a good chance to beat her, she will fight until the last point. I hope Venus is ready to play today.

Wow. Aren't you the No. 1 Venus fan on the board, and yet you had doubts???

Well, truth be told based on the last set shown on NBC, Williams' FH failed her, but Vera showed she is coming into the top 10 and will prove to be a nemesis to the top players.

lol... I predict that YES, Vera CAN and WILL beat Venus. Oh wait, the match is already over. But even if it wasn't, I would still say that Vera would have a vera good chance to beat Venus, especially considering how well she has been playing lately, and how not-so-well Venus has been playing. Great match Vera, keep it up against Nadia!

the arrogance level is getting down and down as Venus keeps loosing... I like A LOT MORE Venus fans right now. They're much more humble... I never would have expected Dawn Marie to say that.
Hope Venus can start winning again and keep the level of humbleness

poor Venus, but really Vera and Nadia has been very impressive recently, and it really isn't like a out of the blue shock.

oh la la! I really thought Vera could trouble Venus but I figured Venus would escape (with bad tennis) like she did against Rubin and Mauresmo at the US open and Hantuchova at Oz 2002. but it does not always work and Vera played her just perfectly.

you could not ask for more HARD WORK and GRIT from VERA. The balls that she ran down! She is VERY DECEPTIVELY fast!

just glad that cappy and venus did not get away this time from losing considering they are not improving their tennis (yes cappy has amazing groundstrokes and fitness but she does too much retrieving whereas Venus is just the opposite with her shoddy Forehand and shady second serve and lack of patience)

Hey- wow. We were correct in saying that
Vera had a good chance to beat Venus. I like
the fact that in her interview to the press she
mentioned that it was a personal mental challenge
to believe she could win. Just as I forecasted. :)
