I miss Chrissie! After many years Chris Evert has retired from her tennis analyst position with NBC. It feels strange not hearing her voice this time of year. :( Mary Carillo has taken her place at NBC. But I get enough of Mary at ESPN/ESPN2. I'd rather hear more from Bud Collins, Mr. tennis knowledge. Atleast John McEnroe is still a tennis analyst. He was a great player, and he is a great analyst! :)

Of course Chrissie is arguably the greatest female tennis player ever. And she's certainly one of the most important tennis players ever. :worship: Man or woman. I hope she's happy raising her family and running the Evert Tennis Academy! :D

And no, Mary is not 10 times better.

Mary is 50 times better. :p

That's just not true, VF. And Mary speaks too much! :p And unlike John McEnroe, Mary could never work for the BBC! ;)

Prissy Chrissy sucks butt. Give me Mary Carillo anyday, and she is funny at times also. I love her joke about Schett beating Venus at the 2001 French. She said," I guess Schett Happens". ROTF..... that's some funny stuff. :)

IMO, Chrissy was a hater. Especially when Johnny Mac was teamed with her ass. I mean Chrissy was just outright negative.

Now, only if ESPN could get rid of Mary Ho and Scram I would be totally satisfied. :lick:

Of course, you people realize that the cat also thinks Patrick McEnroe is a wonderful commentator :)

Well, I think Patrick is alright. I mean he is not the best, but he is good.

I do think John McEnroe has a lot of knowledge about the game, but IMO his nasty attitude and bias overshadows those qualities. I don't like him at all because he likes to make attention seeking comments like Henman will never win Wimbledon, or Goran is a one slam wonder which may be true but just downright rude to say on air.

Also the whole he can beat any women, he calls players fat, he is just a hater who is very unprofessional at times.

I miss Chrissy, kinda. I miss having people bashing her and her asking stupid comments and all like that. Chrissy wasn't a good analyst but she was OK.

Mary is great, though. She has good thoughts but lacks some knowledge of the Tour that one would think she would know off-hand (like the fact that Capriati hasn't won a tournament since the '02 Aussie). People always accused Chrissy of not doing her homework (and rightly so) but Mary was stumped when asked by Johnny Mac if Anna was playing the French this year. Ted had to chime in. Ted sure does his homework and plays well off of Mac.

I think Patrick McEnroe is good, too. :) Today he helped me grasp what Tommy Robredo was doing to foil the evil Chip! :D

But, cat, I have to disagree with you 100% about Chris. She is a wonderful person, but as a commentator she was downright awful. I could not take that lecturing schoolmarm tone another moment! "should, should should!"

Plus, she was completely unable to comment on a match from the perspective of both players. I will never forget her barely mentioning Kim Clijsters' presence in the match when she faced Jennifer in the RG final in 2001. It sounded like she was commentating on a match with one player only on court, or one player and one vague shadow who had no part whatsoever on the proceedings. :p Can you imagine if an NBA announcer only discussed one of the teams on the court? They would not last a day in that job. And neither should Chris have.

That in a nutshell is why I couldn't stand Chris. I mean all the American commentators are bias to a certain degree, which I understand, but Chris was by far the worst.

Oh Janie! Certainly you jest about Chrissy barely mentioning Kim Clijsters in the 2001 French Open final. :p There is no doubt she was rooting for Capriati on the inside. But I find it hard to believe she hardly mentioned Clijsters in that match. Maybe I'll go and watch the tape of that match and pay attention to your Chrissy criticisms and see if they are true.

But I will agree that Chris Evert did sometimes have a lecturing tone when it came to her tennis analysis.

I third that ;) I loved Chris as a player but her commentating was horrible. I love Mary C. :)

the cat,
I actually had dinner with Chris and Andy once as a prize that I won. She was fabulous!!!!!

On the matter of her commentating, you're a little off, though. She referred to Clijsters as "the other player" once during the FO(=) final against JenCap. . . . LOL!!!!!

And Mary speaks too much!

Well she hardly said anything during her NBC debut. But I guess with those two ladie's matches, there wasn't much to say.

She knew Capriati hadn't won a tournament. She just wasn't interested in talking about the two boring women's matches, plus she was just getting settled in her new NBC position.

Thanks for the info Pureracquet! :D I'm not surprised they were good to you.

And you're right, TF. Mary didn't have alot to say about the women's matches today. They have for the most part been awful! But the quality of play should pick up significantly starting tomorrow.

I don't miss chrissie. She had favorites. At least with Mary Carillo, you can never really tell that she is biased to one player or the other

I moved from the USA in Dec. 2000, and
I don't miss Chrissie's "all hingis, all day, unless
she loses; but damn it's all Williams now all
day " tv commentary. It was kind of funny how
she sort had to take back every lousy comment
she made about Venus, and Serena once they
started beating her darling Pet's Martina Hingis's
butt in every major event. No disrepect to
the great talented all around player Ms. Hingis;
but if I recall correctly she didn't think any player
had a real chance at Roland Garros because
Martina's so called hunger to win a RG title
was so much greater than ASV, Monica,Steffi,
or even Mary! lol.
