PARIS (AP) -- Martina Navratilova agrees with French Open fans: It's too bad Steffi Graf's pregnancy prevented her from playing mixed doubles with Andre Agassi.

Otherwise, Roland Garros might have had three former No. 1 players on center court at the same time.

Navratilova and Leander Paes, who won the mixed doubles title in the Australian Open, also are playing at the French. She relished the prospect of facing Graf, who retired in 1999, and Agassi.

``That would have been the match of the tournament, I think,'' Navratilova said. ``Neither one was really much of a specialist in doubles. So the two of them together, I would have liked our chances. No matter how great Andre and Steffi are, it would have been more difficult for them in the mixed, but it would have been fun.''

Instead, doubles buffs at Roland Garros settled Friday for watching Navratilova, who teamed with Paes to beat Patricia Wartusch and Joshua Eagle in the first round, 6-1, 6-3. Navratilova and Svetlana Kuznetsova have advanced to the second round in women's doubles.

Even if Graf hadn't become pregnant with her second child, Navratilova's not sure Mr. and Mrs. Agassi would have taken the court together.

``I think she really didn't want to play,'' Navratilova said. ``It's funny, once you get into that comfort zone not having to get up emotionally for a match, it's like being on perpetual vacation.''

Agassi's not ready for perpetual vacation yet. The 1999 French singles champion improved to 10-0 in major events this year by beating No. 26 Xavier Malisse 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.

No. 29 Vince Spadea lost to Martin Verkerk 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5. That left Agassi as the only American remaining among 13 who entered the men's draw.

``It doesn't say great things for American clay-court tennis if I'm one of the leading players in the clay-court events and my results show up like they do,'' Spadea said.

No. 4 Carlos Moya, the 1998 champion, needed three hours to beat Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3.

The warmest day yet at Roland Garros -- muggy and in the mid-80s -- provided motivation to work quickly, and defending champion Serena Williams beat Barbara Schett 6-0, 6-0 in 40 minutes.

No. 4 Justine Henin-Hardenne and No. 5 Amelie Mauresmo also won in straight sets. Henin-Hardenne defeated Dally Randriantefy 6-1, 6-1, and Mauresmo eliminated Fabiola Zuluaga 6-3, 6-4.

No. 8 Chanda Rubin rallied to beat fellow American Laura Granville 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Compatriot Ashley Harkleroad lost to Magui Serna 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Navratilova, 46, became the oldest Grand Slam champion ever when she and Paes won in Melbourne in January.

``Playing with him is like slipping on an old pair of shoes that fit just right, because we both hit the ball in the right place,'' she said. ``Doubles really is about location more than anything -- where you hit the ball, and where you are.''

Navratilova knows a thing or two about singles too. She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, including two at the French Open.

Given her achievements, the reception she received Friday playing on court 2 was predictable.

``The ovation I got was the biggest ovation I think I ever got here,'' she said. ``My knees were knocking.''
