Hmmm... and I thought Serena was an arrogant bitch. ;)

S. Williams 'sorry' for 6-0, 6-0 victory

PARIS (AP) -- Serena Williams figured an apology was in order.

She had just overpowered Barbara Schett 6-0, 6-0 Friday at the French Open in what amounted to a 40-minute practice session.

So when they met at the net after the third-round match, Williams patted Schett on the back and offered these kind words: ``I'm sorry.''

It was a dose of compassion, something not seen much amid all the showboating in sports today.

``That was strange,'' Schett said. ``I've never heard that from an opponent.''

No. 4 Justine Henin-Hardenne and No. 5 Amelie Mauresmo, the only players to beat Williams this year, also had straight-set wins. But Williams' victory stood out.

``It wasn't as easy as it looked,'' the defending champion insisted.

Hmmmm.

Williams compiled a 23-2 edge in winners, drawing a collective ``Ooooh!'' from fans by stepping up to drive one forehand to a corner. She dropped a total of six points in the second set and generally looked far better than sister Venus did in winning a three-set ordeal Thursday against 110th-ranked Evie Dominikovic.

Don't forget, Schett used to be in the top 10 and she upset Venus at Roland Garros in 2001.

But she hasn't been past the quarterfinals at a major. Serena Williams is trying to become the first player with five straight major titles since Steffi Graf in 1988-89.

Conditioning is a strength for Serena Williams, who next plays No. 16 Ai Sugiyama and announced: ``I came in here really, really fit.''

Of all her wonderful shots against Schett, the most impressive display came on the first set's final point.

Williams raced to retrieve a drop shot that she scooped over the net while sliding into the doubles alley. Reversing direction, she hit a lunging backhand that carried her across the other sideline as the ball plopped in.

Williams' superior court coverage lets her turn an opponent's potential point-ender into just another stroke during an exchange. Schett's only backhand winner came on match point, and she raised her arms in mock triumph while the crowd roared support.

It was just the fourth 6-0, 6-0 on the women's tour this year, and the second of Williams' career. She beat Larisa Neiland by that score in 1998.

Schett's succinct scouting report: ``She runs well, she serves well, she hits hard."

That's nice.

Not sure I agree that most WTA players lack compassion but still a nice gesture from Serena.

#1 Kim fan: I don't think the author was implying that WTA tour players are inconsiderate but sports as a whole tend to be an extension of machismo which leaves no room for compassion. I've heard of fans actually applauding and cheering when someone on the opposing team gets injured. I think the author was referring to incidents like that and not a particular sport and/or persons. :)

You're right, but my brain doesn't work too well on Saturdays! One thing I like about tennis is that generally the players, especially the ladies, are quite nice. Can't always say the same for the crowds.

I agree, when the williams do something nice, it does not generate response. But let them say something misconstrued as negative and you will wake up these posters.

Oh well, serena is very gracious.

When you're the world's No. 1 athlete and the holder of four Grand Slam singles championships, you can afford to throw the other players a bone every now and then. ;)

Does it look on that picture that serena extended her whole hand for shaking, but Barbara was not doing the same (I could see her little finger sticking out). Arrogant bi*ch? :p

Where are all you haters at? I can't believe you losers go run and hide when serena proves you are all just a bunch of ignorant haters ready to pounce on anything serena says or does.

First of all, i want to make clear i'm not a williams fan, but definitely not a hater too... so, i think i can speak as a neutral person.

well, i think it's a nice thing of serena to appologise, but i also think that you guys are exaggerating. i think every single player, who ends in this conditions , would do the same thing...
This appoligising thing is not a serena case, but it's a case about sportsmanship, and any top player who proved that she's ready (playing good tennis, winning, and have a good form, no injuries ....) will do this...
that's my opinion

lol, and kudo to Barbara Schett for being able to laugh and say "it's alright".

I don't think this is worth that big a deal, no player enjoys double bageling an opponent, (although they wont give a game, duh) coz its not a very nice feeling ebing thrashed, espeically on a big stage.

no not every player would do this. Did capriati apologize to mary for double bageling her? no she didn't. In fact I dont think its necessary to apologize. Its only a nice gesture to comfort the loser which is not the job of any athlete.

Apologizing in my opinion is ridiculous. Did lennox lewis apologize to mike tyson? Serena did it but she was not required to do it. IMO apologies are for when you do something wrong to the other person.

1. Sports like boxing have nothing to do with this, ...
2. You could compare this with Brazil playing soccer against let's say Trinidad and Tobago or something, and brazil winning 19-0. After the match, i can assure you, every single player of brazil would feel a bit ashamed, and would appologise.
3. If Brazil wins with 2-1, they would never appologise, or never being too friendly. If we look to the serena match, if she had won 6-3 6-3, she would never appologise,

I say, it's the situation, after a demonstration, every single sporter would do the same thing, but i also say, it stays a nice thing to do (but if you are a logic person, then you must see that there aren't much alternatives to do

I don't understand WHY someone MUST apologize FOR BEATING a player 6-0 6-0 !

If i ever lost to a person 6-0 6-0 and he/she came up to me and said "Sorry"(with a grin like that) i'd smack the ball on his/her arrogant face.

A happy, positive thread about Serena-baby. :hearts: :hearts: I'm watching Venus's match through Eric Robert Rudolph updates (I do live in Atlanta, yanno) and Serena looks so cute in the stands cheering her sister on. Awwwwwwww....

I think Serena and Babsi must get on, they kept smiling at each other throughout the match. Babsi was not bitter at all which Im happy about. Serena is a good sport, a bad loser but a good sport (which is something I relate to), and I think people should stop knocking them for saying stuff that all other players say, when they loose to lower ranked players.

If Serena was SOOOOO SORRY then WHY didn't she let Schett win a game ? .....and if she didn't want to GIVE her a game then WHY is she SORRY ? She played great tennis and beat her opponent FAIR and SQUARE . Whats the apology for ?

I don't see what a great gesture this is. "I'm sorry" after embarassing an opponent 6-0 6-0? I definitely would not want an "I'm sorry" after being beaten that badly and I would not feel better because of it.

That is definitely not a sincere gesture. And I don't understand why everyone is saying "Oh Serena is so sweet" because of it! Please explain!

Diya

Exactly my point SerenasMelons

Some fans here seem just a bit desperate to make Serena seem like an angel she really isn't !
