View Full Version : Evie Disses Venus In Post Match Press Conference

I know this was posted in a similar post, but I want to go further into what Evie said about Venus in her post match conference and this is what she said:

``I was happy I was playing Venus and not Serena,'' she said. ``Serena's a lot better and doesn't miss as much. Venus is more erratic.''

I might remind Evie that it is Venus who has the "W" next to her name after today's match and not her. Just because Venus played worse today than she played on Monday, Evie shouldn't make Venus out to be like she isn't a top ten player because Lord knows she isn't.

Oh please. Where did she say that Venus does not belong in the top ten? She just said that Venus is more erratic when compared to Serena and I don't even think that is a question, it is a fact IMO. Yeah, big diss there. Damn we all must cuss Evie out the next time we see her.

In what way exactly is the truth a "dis"? Serena has been better and less erratic than Venus over the last year.

She didn't bash or dis Venus at all. What she said is unfortunately the truth.

Last year, Venus lost nine times, the second lowest loss total of any other female player. Other than her sister, she lost to Monica Seles, Kim Clijsters (twice), Maggie Maleeva and the now retired Sandrine Testud. I'll add she won seven titles, allbeit 6 Tier II titles and a Tier III title (only Serena won more titles). This year, she already has one title and reached the final of a Grand Slam. Even though she is not doing as good in 2003 as she did in 2002, she is still in the top five, which she has not left since 1998. For someone who is erractic, that is pretty consistent to me. No other player in the current top five can boast that.

Either way Evie lost, so this is a mute topic..

all she said is true regardless of the outcome of the match...

what if she lost to Capriati and said:``I was happy I was playing Jennifer and not Serena,'' she said. ``Serena's a lot better and doesn't miss as much. Jennifer is more erratic.''

WOULD THERE BE THE SAME WILLIAMS FANS OUTCRY???

so leave Evie alone.

So?

Notice Evie said, COMPARED TO SERENA, Venus is more erractic.

Yes, I am a big Venus fan.

What she said was in fact true......

But I just don't see the point in bringing it up, I agree with the starter of this thread that maybe Evie's comment was meant to insult Venus.

I mean duh Serena has won the last 4 grand slams and she's number 1 in the world....why bring it up???

You know damn well that if she played Capriati, Seran's name would not have come up, so the analogy is a very poor one. We know Jennifer has been erratic since winning the AO in 2002; she went from number one to number seven.

Go back and reread what I wrote. I didn't say Venus was playing more consistently than Serena right now; I was saing over a period of five] years (1998-2003), Venus has consistently been inthe top five and that includes four months off in 2000 with wrist tendenitus. Prior to the Scottsdale tournament of 2002, Serena was in danger of falling out of the top ten. Her excellent play from that point has prevented that from happening.

Seriously what can a player say these days? can't they have an opinion? A preference, a reason why they prefer?

If I think a player is shit, I'll say so, who cares if I can't play myself. I still have an opinion.

What? Now if she'd said "I'm glad I had to play Venus and not [insert name of any player ranked outside the top 3, or 10, or whatever] then we might have an argument for dissing. I'm sure even Venus would prefer to play anyone other than the current holder of all four slams. No wonder press conferences get boring, people are sledged into being too afraid to say anything at all.

Yeah.

Why has Evie's comment sparked so much hatred? It was an observation, not a diss. She is obviously very respectful towards both Williams sisters to say that Venus is more erratic after LOSING to her.

May 30th, 2003, 03:14 AM
The comment on Venus is completely true. It doesn't mean she is a bad player or not a respected No2 or No3 in the rankings. It just means Serena is better - which is pretty obvious from 4 GS finals. I wouldn't quote how few times Venus loses compared to other players in the top 5 though - if you don't play much so you won't have so many losses. The measure of venus's ability is her wins - thats what made her number two and the declining number of them is what now makes her number 3.

Alright! Let's see. If I got beaten by someone and then said: " hey! Ok, you beat me but don't think you're that good; I would have had less of a chance with your kid sister." Well, even though it could be true, this retort would smack of sour grapes. End of story.

Oh well! People react differently to losses. Leave Evie alone. Carry on, Vee.

I just can't imagine the Irakis in Southern Irak telling the British: "hey, Brits! Ok, you won but don't think you're that good; we would have had less of a chance if we were facing the Americans." :o

I do enjoy however that so many people hate other players interviews being disected, but love to jump all over Serena the second she opens her mouth. LMAOF

You know what te hypocrisy of this board is????? Ill break it down...... Everyone wants players to be 'REAL' in thier interviews, and say how they really feel, and then when they DO they're called bitches, etc.... Its like they're damned if they do, damned if the dont. The bottom line is right NOW she is playing at a lower level than Serena... Its an undisputible fact, so why try to dispute it?? I thik if Venus was asked, she would say YES, I'm not playing as well as my sister. Its not about the last 5 years, its about right now.

Bottom line is she still had the goods to pull it out, props on that. But RIGHT NOW she's no Serena.

Last time I checked Venus and Serena are two completely different people. When has anyone said, "Well I was glad I was playing Agassi and not Sampras. Agassi is way more erratic"? It's apples and oranges. Basically an assinine comment. In fact it makes Evie look worse. Your game still couldn't beat a so called erratic player. Venus's game was erratic when compared to the way she usually plays, why even throw another players name into the mix at all.

It's sort of sad that people will always see Venus and Serena as two sides of the same coin.

Niether is your favorite, Jennifer, who, if my calcualtions are correct, will have to either beat Venus or if Venus is out by the quarterfinals, will have to get to the final just to stay at number seven because Chanda Rubin isn't defending any points and if she makes a decent showing here, can rise to number seven.

Kid to me, the whole Jen/ranking thing dosnt matter...... The point I was making is that people say they want players to be real, and then when they are, they're chastised. Its got nothing to do with Jen, her ranking, etc. Thats not relevant, so there's no need to bring that up... If you can honestly tell me that Venus and Serena are playing at the same level, I want to know what tennis your watching. Does that mean Venus sucks? BY NO MEANS. But they are just in 2 different places right now, again thats undisputible.

Actually I've seen a lot of Venus fans saying that Evie's observation was correct. Personally it's barely an insult considering some of the things other players have said about them. I don't find it offensive.

This is silly, people say things we don't like or agree with everyday in life. What Evie said was trivial. I think some people are thinking Venus is like crying over this, come on.

Okay, here's my 2 cents. Evie is right. Venus is erratic, but saying it after loosing sounds like sour grapes. She ought to have just shut her trap and many people here will diss Venus or Serena had any of them said the same thing. Some things are better left unsaid...

Yea! I get her, Venus sucks and yet she managed to beat me. That in my opinion is why she' d never make it big as a player. She ought to have been angry with herself for missing this once-in-a-life opportunity of beating Venus, instead of the subtle dig.

How dare Evie make an observation that was perfectly true! How DARE she?

Because Venus fans can't come to terms that Serena is the far better player, and now Venus isn't even the number two:rolleyes: . They still think of her as the best, and when a player or poster points out that Serena is number one and Kim number two, Venus fans get up in arms.
