'Nothing is working'

Dokic looks for answers after second-round loss

Posted: Thursday May 29, 2003 4:20 PM
********
PARIS (Reuters) -- Jelena Dokic looked a lost soul in Roland Garros on Thursday after another defeat in a season blighted by a family feud and uncertainty about her nationality.

Four years after bursting on to the scene as a qualifier at Wimbledon, where she sensationally beat top seed Martina Hingis in the first round, Dokic has been unhappily stomping around the circuit this season without any success.

"I take losses very difficultly but when you have more losses than wins then you have to start reassessing things," Dokic told reporters after her 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 second-round defeat to Slovenia's Tina Pisnik.

"I'm so low on confidence that I need to get it up. Maybe I will have a bad year and learn from it and then get back."

Struggling to cope without the influence of her father Damir, who cut off ties with his daughter because of her relationship with Brazilian racing driver Enrique Bernoldi, Dokic's form has nose-dived in 2003.

Known to be a tennis workaholic, the 20-year-old has played 13 tournaments this season and has each time left empty handed, failing even to progress beyond the second round in nine events.

"My life on the court is different from the one I have off the court and I try to keep that separate," said Dokic. "I'm struggling with my form and nothing seems to be working.

"My head just went a little bit and when things go wrong it's hard to get back.

"I'm struggling with myself and it's difficult when you have to deal with that."

Her nationality is also posing problems for Dokic as she is currently ineligible to take part in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

The Yugoslav-born athlete first competed as an Australian after her family moved there in 1994, but she took Yugoslav citizenship in 2001 in protest against what she considered a lack of support from her adopted country.

She is now considering playing under the Australian flag again -- as she did at the 2000 Games in Sydney -- so that she can have a crack at Olympic gold.

"I need to get my game back on track before deciding about the Olympics or the Fed Cup," she said. "I'll make the decision when I'm ready."

"I haven't had slumps like this before and I'll just have to work at it and hopefully things will turn around.

"I can't get any further back then I am so I can only get better."

To me, Jelena Dokic is a strong girl who is undeserving of the level of criticism afforded to her.

gawd, I'm tired of her pity parties. She's unwilling to change her plight. Just STFU and retire or change how you approach the game. I don't want to hear about 'your personal problems...' etc. Other players are getting divorces, dealing with racism, playing through injuries, etc. etc. If they can win matches, you can too.

don't read threads about her then. I'm sure dokic would prefer to not talk to the media about her problems, but they are forced to do media conferences. and forgive me if i am wrong, but where did dokic even talk about the 'personal problems' you speak of? wasn't she talking about her tennis and the journalist talking about her personal problems?

Sorry, but she may be really hot (she is hot), but she sucks as a tennis player. I have seen her in person, well, probably, 4 times, she hits the shit out of the ball, and that's it, no variety, no spins, no strategy, no nothing. Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and most of the Top 20 are Conchita Martinez mixed with Martina Hingis next to her. The woman has nothing but hard shots, and they aren't even that hard. The Williams girls are like 1000 times better than she is on technique, but they have better power. She had no strategy at all, she just hits the shit out of balls. All the terrible things people accuse the Williamses of, Jelena is the real offender. She is boring as shit to watch, I go to the crapper and get a drink when she is playing. She is a diva in the making, but she needs to develop a better game.

I only read this one to relay my feelings. Last time I checked, you didn't have to be a fan of someone to talk about them. Then again, lemme check the FAQ to make sure. Don't wanna break any rules.

And it's simple to get the journalists to stop digging in her personal life, say at the beginning of the press conference that you're not going to discuss it. Kinda like how the WTA tour rep told the press that Serena will not be answering questions regarding her stalker at last year's Wimbledon and US Open.

Unless journalists have a hidden camera in her house, they have to be finding these things about her life from her own mouth. I'm sick of all the excuses people make for her. I kinda feel sorry for her but then I'd have to care. *asking self do I care* hmm... not really.

Jelena is battling growing pains and a mostly one dimensional game. In the last year or so she has made 2 major changes in her personal life. First and foremost, she doesn't have her domineering father running her career. And secondly she has a boyfriend. Those changes cannot be over looked. And she has changed countries from Australia to Yugoslavia. But now she wants to be an Australian citizen again. Jelena needs to settle down and play a lighter schedule, too. She just might be a little burned out.

I hope she turns it around.

Cariosity, what does STFU mean? I hope the F doesn't mean what I think it does!

you are more than welcome in any dokic thread (i am not a dokic fan), it was just a piece of advice to stop you getting pissed of about reading about her problems. the thing is that if you actually read some dokic interviews you will see that she does not talk about her personal problems in any significant way. the media does not need hidden cameras in her house because all their information is not coming from dokic, it comes from her father, who is more than willing to contact and be contacted by journalist to tell them that he has cut all ties with dokic, that her boyfriend is her biggest mistake etc. you don't have to feel sorry for dokic, but the fact is that you are wrong in thinking that she sits around and tells the whole world all her problems, as it is her father that does that for, and it is her father who keeps all this crap about her in the public eye.

now we wait for one of j_bones' damir-loving posts.

lol, yeah sorry it was soo vulgar. Switz I really dont know much about Damir, other than that hes had some terrible outburst at tennis tournaments and in the vicinity. There are some redeeming things about him though, after he sacrificed about everything for Jelena and the advance of her tennis game. I just want them to reunite and forget about it all for the sake of jelenas game. GEEZ

and do you actually think they he didn't expect something in return for developing her tennis game? i think the fact that he cut all ties with her as soon as she expressed the desire to have some independence and llive her own life is a pretty clear sign that his motives were not quite so altruistic.

Somewhat true, but i mean your talking about breaking all connections with your family. Thats not cool, its not like he was physically abusing her. Yeah he expected her to play and win to bring in money for the family. But shes too busy giving it to the ex F1 racer Enrique

well i think that damir did a lot of cutting of ties family wise, jelena cut ties in with damir in terms of tennis only. seriously if a father does not love his daughter enough to just be satisfied that she is happy, then they don't deserve to be parents. i do enter this debate with some first hand knowledge of damir dokic's personality, as when jelena was australian she played at my club and i hit up with her a fews times. damir was constantly yelling abuse at her for no apparent reason, and this was to a 16 year old girl. i just can't can't support him in anyway.

also bernoldi is a test driver for formula 1, that is why you never see him him racing. he has a long-term contract with his racing team worth millions of dollars, so damir's claims that he is dependant on jelena are complete BS.

Well look what the oral abuse Damir gave to her, it got her to a semifinals of a grandslam at 16. Look at her now

I'm glad to see Jelena is realizing that her game is getting way out of hand. Hopefully she takes some time off to rest and reasses her game.

I've always felt she had a lot of talent. She may not have a slam in her, but she certainly could be a player to trouble other players.

Some people just dont get it. Jelena Dokic is a human being! Y'know, the type that gets hurt when you keep "abusing".

I'm guessing that some people here actually think that getting cussed at and taking it in like a robot who lives, eats, sleeps and shits tennis can actually be considered normal.

i think you need to get some perspective on life. there is a lot more in this world than tennis. a more sensible person would say look at where his oral abuse has got damir dokic, a situation were he effectively does not have a daughter and where he is public laughing-stock.

her game is one-dimensional and predictable

when it's on it is effective and hard to deal with but she does not seem to realize that when it is not on she should use other game plans instead of executing her off game until she LOSES!

she is getting tiresome with her lack of recognition of her opponents.

don't hate her at all but she is rude often and her game is one I always root against because it epitomizes brainless power tennis which is what I hate.

Fantastic

Jelena should go back to her old game. She had great angles, excellently disguised and deft drop shots, she mixed up the play well and ran for miles to get the next ball back in play. For the best example of this type of game, watch the match where she demolished Martina Hingis in the 1999 first round Wimbledon match.

I don't know how Heinz Gundthardt plans to change her game, but he did nothing for Steffi Graf. She did all the hard work on her own. He was there to keep her game under control. He never attempted to change it. What he's doing with Jelena's game is all new territory for him. He has never worked with any other player apart from Steffi. I hope he knows what he's doing because Jelena seems to have complete faith in him. I hope Heinz isn't trying to turn Jelena into Steffi, because Jelena has more shots in her repetoire at her disposal than Steffi did and it would be a shame to waste that talent.

she made the biggest mistake a tennis player can make - she got herself a man.

Its all downhill from here folks ;)

So many players loose the plot (men and women) when they get a boy/girl friend.

Its even worse when they split up.

If a player is loosing tons, but with seeingly no injuries or anything. its usually lover trouble.

She'll get it together though, she's a tough girl.

And you cant win on grass simply hitting shit out the ball.
