PARIS (Reuters) - Jennifer Capriati breezed into the second round of the French Open (news - web sites) Thursday but put her victory in perspective after sharing a tournament car with fellow American Corina Morariu.

Morariu returned to tennis last season after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2001.

"It just sort of seems to make it (tennis) very minute, what she's been through, close to death really," said Capriati, who was forced out of tennis for two years as a teen-ager, after a 6-3, 6-0 win over France's Marion Bartoli.

"In a way, I've sort of been there, had a death of my own really, but not in that sense of actually dying," she said.

A tennis child prodigy, Capriati, now 27, gave up the sport for two entire years in 1994 and 1995 before making her return to the very top in 2001 by winning the Australian Open (news - web sites) and Roland Garros.

"You don't want to have to go through that to get that perspective. I wish you could just realize it on your own," she said.

During her barren years, Capriati had problems with drugs and the law and she repeatedly said her biggest victory was to have bounced back from the ordeal.

"There were certain moments that I sort of had to let part of myself go and die, just to come back.

"You know sometimes it just has to take that extreme to be able to come back totally the other way."

"Yes. I'll never forget where I had to come from," she added.

But Capriati felt she had now with Morariu someone else she could share her experience with.

"What's been meaningful to me is that Corina has been able to come back and do what she wants to do.

"She's living her life to the max now. She's got this perspective. You know, really, she'd be someone good to talk to kind of keep you grounded," she said.
